A new paleomagnetic study is carried out on the ca. 1150 Ma mafic dykes from the North China Craton (NCC). After stepwise thermal demagnetization, most samples yielded two components. The low-temperature component directs north and down with intermediate inclination, which is interpreted as a viscous remanent magnetization of the present magnetic field. The high-temperature component (HC) directs east and down with steep inclination. Positive baked-contact tests and a reversal test suggest the HC is primary. Combined with the relevant paleomagnetic data previously published (Hou et al., 2009; Wang et al., 2020), a new pole is calculated from more than thirty high-quality virtual geomagnetic poles. The pole has averaged out the paleo-secular variation and is different from any younger paleomagnetic poles of the NCC. The pole places the NCC in a mid-latitude region. Combined with the reported 1230-780 Ma paleomagnetic poles from NCC and Laurentia, the new results suggest the two continents assembled during ca. 1150–1110 Ma at high-latitude region. They then together moved to low-latitude region and merged with Amazonia, Baltica, Kalahari to become a part of Rodinia.

We present new rock magnetic and paleomagnetic results from late Mesoproterozoic carbonate successions of the Jingeryu Formation (Fm) in the northern North China craton (NCC). Rock magnetic experiments, including thermomagnetic susceptibility curves, isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) and thermal demagnetization of three-axis IRM, carried out for representative samples from the Jingeryu Fm indicate that both hematite and magnetite are abundant in the purplish-red limestone in the lower part of strata and the magnetic carriers of the pale blue limestone in the upper part are magnetite grains. For most samples subjected to stepwise thermal demagnetization, a high-temperature component (HTC) was isolated after removing a low-temperature component of viscous magnetic remanence acquired in recent geomagnetic fields. The HTC is characterized by steep inclinations, whose primary nature is supported by the presence of geomagnetic reversals. The similarities in paleomagnetic results and the correlatable lithologic sequence support that the Jingeryu Fm, the Nanfen Fm in the eastern Liaoning region in northeastern NCC and the Xinxing Fm in the Xuzhou region in southeastern NCC are correlative strata deposited in the polar region. Recently published radiogenic isotopic results constrain the depositional age of the Nanfen and Xinxing formations around ca. 1.1 Ga. Those high-latitude carbonate rocks widely distributed in the NCC predict an extraordinary climate condition around ca. 1.1 Ga.

The Earth’s geologic record of Milankovitch cycles closely tracks Solar System solutions for the past 50 million years. Prior to 50 million years ago (Ma), however, the solutions lose accuracy rapidly due to chaotic behavior of the Solar System. Here we reconstruct a 10.173 million year-long record from 82.358 Ma to 92.531 Ma of Earth’s orbital parameters from a continental lacustrine sequence in the Songliao Basin, China, constrained by four in situ high-resolution radioisotopic U-Pb ages and magnetic reversal stratigraphy. Analysis of thorium and ostracode shell abundance records from the Songliao Basin reveal evidence for two chaotic secular resonance transitions in the orbital motions of Earth and Mars from 85.2 Ma to 91.55 Ma. The evidence validates similar observations in western North American marine stratigraphy. A unique phasing between the observed orbital eccentricity and obliquity modulations may explain the anoxic events that occurred in both marine and continental environments during this time. Taken together, the continental and marine stratigraphic evidence demonstrates a strong global reach of Late Cretaceous Milankovitch cycles, and provides an important constraint on Solar System chaoticity and the calculation of accurate orbital solutions prior to 50 Ma.

The precollisional location and shape of the Lhasa terrane are crucial for constraining the closure of the Neo-Tethys Ocean and the ensuing India-Asia collision; however, estimation of these features of the Lhasa terrane remains highly controversial. Here, we carried out a new paleomagnetic investigation on the Lower Cretaceous Duoni Formation red beds in the central-eastern Lhasa terrane. The tilt-corrected site-mean direction is declination (Ds) = 339.0°, inclination (Is) = 26.8°, ks = 78.4, and α95 = 2.3° (k—precision parameter; α95—the radius that the mean direction lies within 95% confidence; s—stratigraphic coordinates) (N = 50), corresponding to a paleopole at 64.2°N, 324.2°E, with A95 = 1.9° (A95—the radius that the mean pole lies within 95% confidence). These new paleomagnetic data pass a positive fold test and indicate that the studied area was located at 14.3 ± 1.9°N during the Early Cretaceous. No significant inclination shallowing is present in the Lower Cretaceous Duoni Formation red beds. Our new results, combined with previously published reliable Cretaceous paleomagnetic results, show that the Lhasa terrane was located at a paleolatitude of ∼22.9°N to 10.1°N from west to east and was oriented at ∼298°−296° prior to India-Asia collision.

The drift history of the Lhasa terrane from Gondwana to Asia plays a crucial role in understanding the Tethys evolution and true polar wander (TPW). However, few reliable paleomagnetic results from Jurassic strata are currently available for reconstructing its northward journey. We performed a combined paleomagnetic and geochronological study on Bima Formation strata in the Xigaze area. Combined with previous results from the Sangri area, our results reveal a paleolatitude of 8 ± 4°S at ∼180 Ma for the reference point (29.3°N, 90.3°E). Along with other paleomagnetic results from the Triassic to Cretaceous, our new results suggest that the Lhasa terrane motion accelerated from ∼2 cm/yr during ∼220–180 Ma to ∼17 cm/yr during ∼180–170 Ma. Paleolatitude information of the North Qiangtang terrane and Tethyan Himalaya is calculated from paleopoles that meet five criteria, which include (a) structural control, (b) well-determined rock age, (c) stepwise demagnetizations, (d) a minimum of 25 specimens or 8 sites are contained, and (e) robust field or reversal tests are provided. Both terranes also show significant acceleration during their northward motion, which may be related to oceanic slab subduction. Thus, all Gondwana-derived microcontinents seem to share a significant acceleration during their northward motion. In addition, recent paleomagnetic results from volcanic rocks dated at ∼155 Ma subdivide the overall northward motion during ∼170–130 Ma into two stages, which include a southward drift during ∼170–155 Ma followed by northward motion during ∼155–130 Ma. These results support the fast Late Jurassic TPW during a ∼10 Myr time span.

Length of day (LOD) varies throughout Earth history, dictated in the long term by the retreat of the Moon and growth of Earth's core. Reconstruction of LOD in deep time has greatly benefited from analyses of the orbital cycle from geological records. The Precambrian database, however, is very limited. Here we present a cyclostratigraphic study on c. 1.1 Ga laminated argillaceous limestones of the Nanfen Formation from the North China craton. Milankovitch cycles are successfully recognized from the consistent cyclical variations of the high-resolution magnetic susceptibility data measured on drillcores from the Nanfen Formation. Sedimentary cycles with wavelengths of 12.45, 10.72 and 9.96 m in three drillcores are interpreted as 405 kyr eccentricity cycles. An obliquity period of 20.9–21.4 kyr and a precession period of 12.7–16.0 kyr are also identified. The Earth–Moon distance and LOD are thus estimated at 3.43 ± 0.04 × 10 8 m and 18.94 ± 0.39 h, respectively. Our new results together with the data previously published reveal an important discontinuity between 1.9 and 1.4 Ga in the evolutionary trend of the LOD. We suggest that Earth's core grew rapidly during the interval, which significantly changed the moment of inertia of the Earth–Moon system, and tidal dissipation again ruled the LOD variations after that stage. In the Rodinia supercontinent, Laurentia is placed at the center because it was flanked by late Neoproterozoic rifted margins; however, the conjugate margin for western Laurentia is still enigmatic. In this study, new paleomagnetic results have been obtained from 15 ca. 775 Ma mafic dikes in eastern Hebei Province, North China craton (NCC). Stepwise thermal demagnetization revealed a high-temperature component, directed northeast or southwest with shallow inclinations, with unblocking temperatures of as high as 580 °C. Rock magnetism suggests the component is carried by single-domain and pseudo-single-domain magnetite grains. Its primary origin is supported by a positive reversal test and regional remanence direction correlation test, and the paleomagnetic pole (29.0°S, 64.7°E, A95 = 5.4°) is not similar to any published younger poles of the NCC. Matching the late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic (ca. 1110–775 Ma) apparent polar wander paths of the NCC and Laurentia suggests that the NCC could have been the conjugate margin for northwestern Laurentia in Rodinia, rather than sitting off the northeast coast of the main Rodinian landmass. Geological data indicate that breakup of the NCC and Laurentia occurred between ca. 775 and 720 Ma.

Redlichiid trilobite and small shelly fossils indicate strong ties of the North China craton (NCC) to Gondwana during the early Cambrian, while recent discoveries of the characteristic fossils of Laurentia in Wuliuan shales in the eastern NCC imply its possible connection with Laurentia during the middle Cambrian. Here we report a new paleomagnetic pole at 31.8°S, 140.4°E (radius of 95% confidence cone of paleomagnetic pole, A95, = 5.3°), obtained from the Wuliuan (ca. 505 Ma) Hsuchuang Formation, by averaging our new data and existing virtual geomagnetic poles acquired from different parts of the NCC. A positive regional tilt test and the presence of geomagnetic reversals demonstrate that the remanence was primary. The paleomagnetic data permit placing the NCC near 20°N between Laurentia and Australia at ca. 505 Ma, suggesting that the NCC may have played the role of biogeographic link between East Gondwana and Laurentia in the middle Cambrian. Low-latitudinal westward ocean currents may have facilitated faunal migrations from Laurentia to East Gondwanan blocks via the NCC as well as the newly formed tectono-paleogeographic archipelago, which likely further enhanced biological exchange in the late Cambrian.

A new combined geochronological and paleomagnetic study was carried out on the late Mesoproterozoic mafic dikes in the northeastern and central North China Craton (NCC). Three dikes were dated at 1224.2 ± 5.1 Ma, 1219.9 ± 6.0 Ma and 1215.2 ± 7.7 Ma through use of the secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) zircon dating method and one dike was dated at 1219.1 ± 4.3 Ma by using SIMS baddeleyite dating method, indicating that these dikes emplaced at ∼1220 Ma. A total of 286 paleomagnetic core samples were collected from seven ∼1220 Ma dikes and their host rocks, as well as two ∼775 Ma dikes for field tests. All the samples were subjected to stepwise thermal demagnetization. Rock magnetic experiments of representative samples demonstrate that the dominant magnetic carriers of the ∼1220 Ma dikes are single-domain and pseudo-single domain magnetite grains. Two paleomagnetic components were identified from the ∼1220 Ma dikes. The low temperature component is a viscous magnetic remanence acquired in the recent geomagnetic field. The high temperature component (HTC) was isolated between 500 and 580°C, which directs east and down with moderate inclination. A paleomagnetic pole (11.3°N, 175.8°E, A95 = 7.6°) was determined by averaging seven virtual geomagnetic poles (VGPs), each VGP corresponding to the mean HTC direction of an individual dike. The ∼1220 Ma pole passed a baked-contact test and appeared to adequately average out secular variation. It differs from any younger poles of the NCC, and is thus considered as a reliable pole for the NCC. While our new results place the NCC at intermediate paleolatitudes (∼28.8°N for site located at 36.8°N, 113.4°E) at ∼1220 Ma, the coeval high-quality poles in the global paleomagnetic database, however, indicate that the Australian cratons were positioned near the pole and Laurentia was located around the Equator, depicting a dispersed paleogeographic pattern of the three continents at ∼1220 Ma. The updated paleomagnetic data together with geological evidence may suggest that the NCC separated from northern Australia between ∼1320 and ∼1220 Ma, and later joined northwestern Laurentia between ∼1220 and ∼1110 Ma.

The interval from the late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic is generally considered as a critical time for the amalgamation of Rodinia. The location of the North China Craton (NCC) in Rodinia remains contentious and demands greater paleomagnetic constraints. A combined geochronologic and paleomagnetic study was conducted on the late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic rocks in the eastern NCC. Three sills were dated at ca. 945 Ma and one at ca. 920 Ma through use of the zircon U-Pb secondary ion mass spectroscopy method. Paleomagnetic investigation revealed no significant discrepancy between these sills. A positive baked-contact test, secular variation test and presence of reversals together support the primary origin interpretation for the remnant magnetization. A high-quality pole at (28.2 °S, 141.9 °E, A95 = 10.4°) was thus obtained by averaging our new results and a virtual geomagnetic pole previously reported for a ca. 920 Ma sill in the region. These Neoproterozoic sills intruded the successions that contain correlative strata that are named Nanfen, Xinxing, and Liulaobei formations in Liaoning, Jiangsu, and Anhui provinces, respectively. The Nanfen Formation and its equivalents are constrained between ca. 1120 and ca. 945 Ma by detrital zircons and the well-dated mafic sills. The paleomagnetic inclinations observed from the lower parts of the Nanfen, Xinxing, and Liulaobei formations are notably steep. The corresponding poles from these rock units are consistent and averaged at 38.6 °N, 136.7 °E (A95 = 3.2°). The quality of this pole is strengthened by a positive reversal test and its distinctiveness from the younger poles of the NCC. In the middle part of the Nanfen Formation, however, the paleomagnetic directions are characterized by moderate inclinations, being significantly different from those in the lower part of the Nanfen Formation and its equivalents. The calculated pole for the upper part of the Lower Member of the Nanfen Formation is at 8.0 °N, 128.5 °E (A95 = 7.9°). Another pole obtained from the Middle Member of the Nanfen Formation is at 11.2 °S, 127.7 °E (A95 = 8.5°). These two poles also differ from the younger poles of the NCC and likely represent the primary remanences. Our new results, together with the existing global paleomagnetic data and geological evidence, aided by the “right-way-up” connection model between Laurentia and Baltica in Rodinia, support a NCC–NW Laurentia connection between ca. 1120 and 890 Ma.

A cooling trend during the Middle Ordovician may have resulted in significant biotic, atmospheric and hydrologic changes, but the exact timing and forcing of this climate event still remain largely ambiguous. Here, we present astronomically calibrated magnetic susceptibility (MS) and gamma ray (GR) data from the shale and carbonate successions of the Kalpin area in the Tarim Basin, NW China to study the Middle Ordovician climate. The spectral analyses of the 405-kyr calibrated MS and GR time series reveal periodicities close to 405 (calibrated), 100, 31 and 19 kyr, supporting a Milankovitch forcing for the sedimentary cyclicity. The eccentricity and obliquity amplitude modulation cycles show main periodicities of ~2.4 and ~1.2 Myr, respectively. A cooling event along with the middle Darriwilian isotope carbon excursion (MDICE) appears to have been initiated by the alignment of the eccentricity and obliquity amplitude minima at 4.07 Myr prior to the Darriwilian/Sandbian (D/S) boundary. This climate event was in pace with high-amplitude obliquity oscillations during a period when the 1.2 Myr obliquity amplitude modulation cycles controlled the global third-order eustatic sequences. The termination of this cooling event corresponding to a global third-order highstand was initiated by an eccentricity oscillation maximum at 0.63 Myr prior to the D/S boundary. Subsequent climate alleviation was dominated by eccentricity forcing until the earliest Sandbian. We suggest that although the climate changes have been primarily associated with the CO2 level, a specific sequence of astronomical variations during the Middle Ordovician was responsible for the time when the critical threshold was crossed.

Late Paleozoic deglaciation is the Earth’s first icehouse-to-greenhouse transition in a vegetated world, but the climatic and biological responses to this transition have not yet been fully addressed. We conducted cyclostratigraphic analysis on the magnetic susceptibility from a deep marine carbonate succession in South China, to reconstruct the astrochronology of the late Early Permian, and to decipher evolutionary responses to astronomically forced climate changes in a marine diversity time series. Our results indicates that the minima of ~1.8 m.y. short orbital eccentricity amplitude modulation cycles led to seasonally stable precipitation patterns and a constant input of nutrients, which spurred marine biodiversity during this deglaciation. Synchronizing global biotic and abiotic records reveals that peaks of marine biodiversity occurred during nodes of ~1.3 m.y. obliquity amplitude modulation cycles, when ice sheet expansion triggered enhanced precipitation and organic carbon burial during icehouse conditions (290−285.1 Ma). Starting at 285.1 Ma, the insolation-biodiversity relationship began to change, paced by glacial termination and tropical aridification. With the transition to greenhouse conditions (~279.1−272 Ma), obliquity nodes became associated instead with terrestrial aridity and marine anoxia, and suppression of marine speciation. Our results bring into focus a pattern of shifting dynamics involving Earth’s astronomical parameters, climate change and marine biodiversity for icehouse and greenhouse worlds in the late Paleozoic Era.

The fold test is inevitably used to determine whether a remanence is acquired prefold. The remanence declinations recorded in rocks may be affected by local rotation. Thus, it is difficult to restore the structure correction’s original orientation, leading to a possible incorrect conclusion of the fold test. However, the tilt correction of inclination is immune to the influence of local rotations. Therefore, we propose a more straightforward fold test based on the inclination-only mean. Examples are given to verify the validity of the inclination-only fold test, which can be applied to data affected by a possible local rotation. The inclination-only fold test should be used to determine the contribution of inclinations. The combined use of the 3-D and inclination-only fold tests is required to evaluate paleomagnetic results from the orogen or sampling sections with unrecognizable plunging folds or near the faults.
