The intracellular lipids in muscle cells of farm animals play a crucial role in determining the overall intramuscular fat (IMF) content, which has a positive impact on meat quality. However, the mechanisms underlying the deposition of lipids in muscle cells of farm animals are not yet fully understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the roles of carbohydrate-response element binding protein (ChREBP) and fructose in IMF deposition of chickens. For virus-mediated ChREBP overexpression in tibialis anterior (TA) muscle of chickens, seven 5-d-old male yellow-feather chickens were used. At 10 d after virus injection, the chickens were slaughtered to obtain TA muscles for analysis. For fructose administration trial, sixty 9-wk-old male yellow-feather chickens were randomly divided into 2 groups, with 6 replicates per group and 5 chickens per replicate. The chickens were fed either a basal diet or a basal diet supplemented with 10% fructose (purity ≥ 99%). At 4 wk later, the chickens were slaughtered, and breast and thigh muscles were collected for analysis. Abstract Background The modified pancreatitis activity scoring system (mPASS) was proposed to assess the activity of acute pancreatitis (AP) while it doesn’t include indicators that directly reflect pathophysiology processes and imaging characteristics. Objectives To determine the threshold of admission mPASS and investigate radiomics and laboratory parameters to construct a model to predict the activity of AP. Methods AP inpatients at institution 1 were randomly divided into training and validation groups based on a 5:5 ratio. AP inpatients at Institution 2 were served as test group. The cutoff value of admission mPASS scores in predicting severe AP was selected to divide patients into high and low level of disease activity group. LASSO was used in screening features. Multivariable logistic regression was used to develop radiomics model. Meaningful laboratory parameters were used to construct combined model. Results There were 234 (48 years ± 10, 155 men) and 101 (48 years ± 11, 69 men) patients in two institutions. The threshold of admission mPASS score was 112.5 in severe AP prediction. The AUC of the radiomics model was 0.79, 0.72, and 0.76 and that of the combined model incorporating rad-score and white blood cell were 0.84, 0.77, and 0.80 in three groups for activity prediction. The AUC of the combined model in predicting disease without remission was 0.74. Conclusions The threshold of admission mPASS was 112.5 in predicting severe AP. The model based on CECT radiomics has the ability to predict AP activity. Its ability to predict disease without remission is comparable to mPASS. Critical relevance statement This work is the first attempt to assess the activity of acute pancreatitis using contrast-enhanced CT radiomics and laboratory parameters. The model provides a new method to predict the activity and prognosis of AP, which could contribute to further management. Key Points Radiomics features and laboratory parameters are associated with the activity of acute pancreatitis. The combined model provides a new method to predict the activity and prognosis of AP. Abstract Objectives While surgery plays a crucial role in treating papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), the potential effects of subsequent TSH suppression therapy on prognosis should not be overlooked. This study aims to investigate the factors that influence postoperative TSH suppression therapy in patients with PTC. Methods This study was a retrospective cohort study conducted at our hospital. It included 268 patients who underwent surgery and were pathologically diagnosed with PTC between February 2019 and February 2021. The selected patients received postoperative TSH suppression therapy. Based on the TSH level measured 12 months after surgery, the patients were divided into two groups: TSH level conforming group (n = 80) and non-conforming group (n = 188). We then compared the general clinical data, clinicopathological characteristics, preoperative laboratory test indicators, postoperative levothyroxine sodium tablet dosage, follow-up frequency, and thyroid function-related indicators between the two groups of patients. The correlation between the observed indicators and the success of TSH suppression therapy was further analyzed, leading to the identification of influencing factors for TSH suppression therapy. Results There were no statistically significant differences in general clinical data and clinicopathological characteristics between the two groups of patients (P > 0.05). Previous studies have specifically demonstrated that incorporating high-quality side-information can notably enhance the steganographic security of JPEG images. To obtain more precise side-information estimates, researchers utilize sophisticated deblocking or denoising filters, which enhance security but require a substantial amount of time. The challenge lies in achieving a significant improvement in security and efficiency. This paper introduces a steganographic network named WTSNet, which leverages wavelet transform for estimating side-information through iterative optimization in both the pixel and wavelet domains. The wavelet domain is purposely designed to capture intricate high-frequency texture details and facilitate precise estimation of the side-information. Furthermore, the embedding cost is adjusted based on the polarity of the estimated rounding error, ensuring both secure and efficient performance. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme substantially enhances the security of conventional JPEG steganography, which relies on additive distortion. Moreover, it outperforms the state-of-the-art JPEG steganography methods based on estimating side-information while consuming less time.

Introduction: Laying performance is a key factor affecting production efficiency in poultry, but its molecular mechanism is still indistinct. In this study, Yaoshan chickens, a local breed in Guizhou, China, and merchant chickens (GYR) with higher egg yield after the three-line cross improvement hybridization of Yaoshan chickens were used as animal samples.Methods: To explore the regulatory mechanism of the diversities in laying performance, RNA-seq and ultra-performance liquid chromatographytandem mass spectrometry (UPLC—MS/MS) were used to describe the transcriptional and metabolic profiles of the ovaries of Yaoshan and GYR chickens.Results: At the transcriptional level, 288 differentially expressed genes were upregulated in Yaoshan chickens and 353 differentially expressed genes were upregulated in GYR chickens. In addition, GSEA showed that ECM-receptor interactions and the TGF-β signaling pathway were restrained, resulting in increased egg production in GYR chickens. Furthermore, the upregulation of thiamine and carnitine was identified by metabolomic analysis to facilitate the laying performance of hens. Finally, comprehensive analyses of the transcriptome and metabolome found that thiamine and carnitine were negatively correlated with ECM-receptor interactions and the TGF-β signaling pathway, which jointly regulate the laying performance of Yaoshan chickens and GYR chickens.Discussion: Taken together, our research delineates differences in the transcriptional and metabolic profiles of the ovaries of Yaoshan and GYR chickens during the peak egg production period and provides new hypotheses and clues for further research on poultry egg production performance and the improvement of economic benefits.

Abstract Multi-image steganography, a technique for concealing information within multiple carrier mediums, finds remote sensing images to be particularly apt carriers due to their complex structures and abundant texture data. These characteristics bolster the resilience against steganalysis and enhance steganographic capacity. The efficacy of multi-image steganography hinges on the diplomatic strategy of cover selection and the meticulous allocation of the payload. Nevertheless, the majority of current methods, which are empirically formulated, predominantly focus on the texture complexity of individual images, thereby potentially undermining overall security. This paper introduces a security-oriented approach to steganographic payload allocation for multiple remote sensing images aimed at fortifying the security of multi-image steganography. Our primary contributions include employing a steganalysis pre-trained network to quantify texture complexity in remote sensing cover images, directly correlating it with security. Additionally, we have developed an adaptive payload allocation strategy for multiple images, which embeds a payload proximate to each image’s maximal steganographic capacity while concurrently ensuring the security of the embedding process. Experimental results corroborate that our methodology excels in cover selection and payload allocation and achieves better undetectability against modern steganalysis tools.

Abstract Background Camellia sasanqua Thunb. is an essential woody ornamental plant. Our continuous observation found that scale insects often infest C. sasanqua all year round in Kunming, China, resulting in poor growth. Scientifically preventing and controlling the infestation of scale insects should be paid attention to, and the mechanism of scale insects influencing C. sasanqua should be used as the research basis. Results The scale insect was identified as Pseudaulacaspis sasakawai Takagi. We analyzed transcriptome sequencing data from leaves of C. sasanqua infested with scale insects. A total of 1320 genes were either up-regulated or down-regulated and differed significantly in response to scale insects. GO (Gene Ontology) annotation analysis showed that the pathway of catalytic activity, binding, membrane part, cell part, and cellular process were affected. KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathway analysis showed that most DEGs (differentially expressed genes) involved in plant hormone signal transduction, MAPK signaling pathway, flavonoid biosynthesis, tropane, piperidine and pyridine alkaloid biosynthesis. We also observed that the expression of galactose metabolism and carotenoid biosynthesis were significantly influenced. In addition, qRT-PCR (quantitative real-time PCR) validated the expression patterns of DEGs, which showed an excellent agreement with the transcriptome sequencing. Conclusions Our transcriptomic analysis revealed that the C. sasanqua had an intricate resistance strategy to cope with scale insect attacks. After sensing the attack signal of scale insects, C. sasanqua activated the early signal MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) to activate further transcription factors and Auxin, ET, JA, ABA, and other plant hormone signaling pathways, ultimately leading to the accumulation of lignin, scopolin, flavonoids and other secondary metabolites, produces direct and indirect resistance to scale insects. Our results suggested that it provided some potential resources of defense genes that would benefit the following resistance breeding in C. sasanqua to scale insects.

Summary: Alternative splicing (AS) as one of the important post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms has been poorly studied during embryogenesis. In this study, we comprehensively collected and analyzed the transcriptome data of early embryos from human and mouse. We found that AS plays an important role in this process and predicted candidate RNA binding protein (RBP) regulators that are associated with reproductive development. The predicted RBPs such as EIF4A3, MAK16, SRSF2, and UTP23 were found to be associated with reproductive disorders. By Smart-seq2 sequencing analysis, we identified 5445 aberrant alternative splicing events in Eif4a3-knockdown embryos. These events were preferentially associated with RNA processing. In conclusion, our work on the landscape and potential function of alternative splicing events will boost further investigation of detailed mechanisms and key factors regulating mammalian early embryo development and promote the inspiration of pharmaceutical approaches for disorders in this crucial biology process.

IntroductionSevere acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causal agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has infected millions of individuals worldwide, which poses a severe threat to human health. COVID-19 is a systemic ailment affecting various tissues and organs, including the lungs and liver. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is one of the most common liver cancer, and cancer patients are particularly at high risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Nonetheless, few studies have investigated the impact of COVID-19 on ICC patients.MethodsWith the methods of systems biology and bioinformatics, this study explored the link between COVID-19 and ICC, and searched for potential therapeutic drugs.ResultsThis study identified a total of 70 common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) shared by both diseases, shedding light on their shared functionalities. Enrichment analysis pinpointed metabolism and immunity as the primary areas influenced by these common genes. Subsequently, through protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis, we identified SCD, ACSL5, ACAT2, HSD17B4, ALDOA, ACSS1, ACADSB, CYP51A1, PSAT1, and HKDC1 as hub genes. Additionally, 44 transcription factors (TFs) and 112 microRNAs (miRNAs) were forecasted to regulate the hub genes. Most importantly, several drug candidates (Periodate-oxidized adenosine, Desipramine, Quercetin, Perfluoroheptanoic acid, Tetrandrine, Pentadecafluorooctanoic acid, Benzo[a]pyrene, SARIN, Dorzolamide, 8-Bromo-cAMP) may prove effective in treating ICC and COVID-19.ConclusionThis study is expected to provide valuable references and potential drugs for future research and treatment of COVID-19 and ICC.

Liver occupying lesions can profoundly impact an individual’s health and well-being. To assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal areas in the liver, we propose a novel network named SEU2-Net by introducing the channel attention mechanism into U2-Net for accurate and automatic liver occupying lesion segmentation. We design the Residual U-block with Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE-RSU), which is to add the Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention mechanism at the residual connections of the Residual U-blocks (RSU, the component unit of U2-Net). SEU2-Net not only retains the advantages of U2-Net in capturing contextual information at multiple scales, but can also adaptively recalibrate channel feature responses to emphasize useful feature information according to the channel attention mechanism. In addition, we present a new abdominal CT dataset for liver occupying lesion segmentation from Peking University First Hospital’s clinical data (PUFH dataset). We evaluate the proposed method and compare it with eight deep learning networks on the PUFH and the Liver Tumor Segmentation Challenge (LiTS) datasets. The experimental results show that SEU2-Net has state-of-the-art performance and good robustness in liver occupying lesions segmentation.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver condition worldwide. Numerous studies conducted recently have demonstrated a connection between the dysbiosis of the development of NAFLD and gut microbiota. Rebuilding a healthy gut ecology has been proposed as a strategy involving the use of probiotics. The purpose of this work is to investigate and compare the function of probiotics Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) and VSL#3 in NAFLD mice. Rodent NAFLD was modeled using a methionine choline-deficient diet (MCD) with/without oral probiotic delivery. Subsequently, qPCR, histological staining, and liver function tests were conducted. Mass spectrometry-based analysis and 16S rDNA gene sequencing were used to investigate the liver metabolome and gut microbiota. We found that while both A. muciniphila and VSL#3 reduced hepatic fat content, A. muciniphila outperformed VSL#3. Furthermore, probiotic treatment restored the β diversity of the gut flora and A. muciniphila decreased the abundance of pathogenic bacteria such as Ileibacterium valens. These probiotics altered the metabolism in MCD mice, especially the glycerophospholipid metabolism. In conclusion, our findings distinguished the role of A. muciniphila and VSL#3 in NAFLD and indicated that oral-gavage probiotics remodel gut microbiota and improve metabolism, raising the possibility of using probiotics in the cure of NAFLD.

Abstract Fertilization can be optimized and managed during the flue-cured tobacco growing period by studying the response of soil and microbial biomass stoichiometric characteristics to fertilization. In this study, we investigated the effect of compound fertilizers combined with microbial fertilizer treatments on the stoichiometric characteristics of the rhizosphere soil and the limitations of microbial resources during the flue-cured tobacco growing period. The results indicated that soil and microbial C:N:P varied greatly with the growing period. The effect of sampling time was usually greater than that of fertilization treatment, and microbial C:N:P did not vary with the soil resource stoichiometric ratio. The microbial metabolism of the tobacco-growing soil was limited by phosphorus after extending the growing period, and phosphorus limitation gradually increased from the root extension to the maturation periods but decreased at harvest. The rhizosphere soil microbial nitrogen and phosphorus limitations were mainly affected by soil water content, soil pH, microbial biomass carbon, and the ratio of microbial biomass carbon to microbial biomass phosphorus. Applying microbial fertilizer reduced phosphorus limitation. Therefore, applying microbial fertilizer regulated the limitation of microbial resources by affecting the soil and microbial biomass C:N:P in flue-cured tobacco rhizosphere soils.

The active ingredients of Chia seed mainly include fatty acids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, protein, dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals, which have physiological activities of anti-oxidation, regulating blood lipids, regulating blood pressure, regulating blood sugar, reducing creatine kinase and anti inflammatory disinfection. With the enhancement of people's awareness of health care and the pursuit of nutritious food, Chia seed has gradually become a hot topic in the field of food research. At present, most of Chia seed are directly added to the food as additives, without in-depth development of new products. It has a good effect in preventing cancer and regulating blood lipids, regulating blood pressure, regulating blood sugar. Few new products have been developed, and the relevant research needs to be deepened. The present review summarizes active ingredients, physiological action and function of Chia seed as well as its application in food, health products, and cosmetics industries. This review aims to provide reference for the research and development of Chia seed.

Concrete constructions used in harsh marine environments are commonly destroyed by sulfate ions. In this paper, by modeling aggregates as random convex polygons, to analyze and forecast the deteriorating condition of concrete under salt attack, a finite element method is suggested. The sulfate attack on concrete is studied using the numerical analytical method to examine changes in sulfate ions and expansion products at the mesoscale. Since concrete is a heterogeneous mixture, the diffusion characteristics of phases, such as the aggregate, interfacial transition zone (ITZ), mortar and pore, were considered. The proposed mesoscale numerical analysis method is validated by experiments. It is demonstrated that: (1) the setting of ITZ thickness and pore has negligible effect on concrete damage in sulfate environment; (2) reducing the water-cement ratio can significantly enhance the erosion resistance of concrete; (3) within a certain range of depth, the surface sulfate concentration is positively correlated with the erosion degree; (4) aluminate determines the peak value of ettringite content in concrete.

Objectives Since COVID-19 first appeared in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, the disease has spread rapidly across the country. To reduce the spread of infection, schools including kindergartens were closed. Prolonged home confinement can affect children’s behaviour. Therefore, we investigated the change of preschoolers’ total daily screen time during the COVID-19 lockdown in China.Design, setting and participants In the parental survey, 1121 preschoolers, whose parents or grandparents completed an online survey from 1 June 2020 to 5 June 2020, were enrolled.Primary outcome Total daily screen time. Multivariable modelling was performed to identify factors associated with increased screen time.Results The results showed that preschoolers’ total daily screen time during lockdown(median 2.5 hours, IQR 2.5 hours) was significantly longer than it was before lockdown (median 1.5 hours, IQR 1.0 hour). Older age (OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.48), higher annual household income (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.34),and decrease of moderate-vigorous physical activity (OR 1.41, 95% CI 1.20 to 1.66) were independently associated with increased screen time.Conclusions Preschoolers’ total daily screen time significantly increased during lockdown.

This paper introduces EU-Net, an efficient and enhanced U-Net-like architecture designed for medical image segmentation. It comprises a lightweight encoder and decoder connected through dense skip-connections. To further improve the robustness of the EU-Net, chain EU-Net is proposed. Chain EU-Net is based on a streamlined architecture that uses multiple EU-Net to build light weight deep neural networks by dense skip-connection. Compared to traditional segmentation algorithms such as U-Net and its variants, our neural network structure possesses both lightweight and stability simultaneously. EU-Net and chain EU-Net are evaluated on three typical medical image segmentation tasks: GLAS (Gland segmentation) dataset, RITE (Retinal Images Vessel Tree Extraction) dataset and LiTS (Liver Tumor Segmentation Challenge) dataset. In addition, we used PUFH (Peking University First Hospital) dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed methods achieve state-of-the-art performance with very few parameters.

Collichthys lucidus is a small fish found in offshore waters that is economically important for China. It is imperative to understand its distribution characteristics and driving factors. Based on survey data of trawl fishery resources offshore of Zhejiang province, China, in spring (April) and autumn (November) from 2018 to 2022, the spatial and temporal distributions of C. lucidus in this area were analyzed. The random forest (RF) model was used to determine the important marine factors affecting the distribution of C. lucidus. The relationship between the distributions of the important variables was analyzed. The results showed that C. lucidus was mainly distributed in coastal waters. The tail density of the species exhibited obvious seasonal variation and was significantly greater in autumn than in spring. The most important factor affecting the distribution of this species in spring and autumn was water depth. The bottom temperature, bottom salinity and dissolved oxygen concentration were also important influencing factors. The importance of these factors differed among the different seasons, while the chlorophyll a concentration and pH had no significant effect on the species distribution. This study revealed the distribution pattern of C. lucidus in offshore waters of Zhejiang Province and the influence of important marine factors on its distribution. This study can enrich the survey data on C. lucidus and provide basic data for its scientific management and protection.

α-Farnesene, a crucial secondary metabolite in sesquiterpenes, is crucial for plant biotic and abiotic stress resistance. In this study, we screened an AFS gene from transcriptome data of tea plants (Camellia sinensis) intercropped with Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima), resulting in the cloning of CsAFS2. CsAFS2 expression increased following treatment with MJ (Methyl jasmonate), SA (Salicylic acid), GA3 (Gibberellin A3), and various plant growth regulators, as well as under high-salt, drought, and low-temperature conditions. The heterologous genetic transformation of tobacco with CsAFS2 led to an enhanced resistance to low-temperature stress and aphid feeding, evident from elevated levels of osmotic regulatory substances, increased protective enzyme activity, and the upregulation of cold and insect resistance-related genes. Trichomes, crucial in cold and insect resistance, exhibited significantly greater length and density in transgenic tobacco as compared to control plants. These results confirm the vital role of CsAFS2 in enhancing cold and insect resistance, providing comprehensive insights into stress regulation mechanisms in tea plants and advancing stress-resistant tea plant breeding.

Flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H) catalyzes trihydroxyflavanone formation into dihydroflavonols in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway, serving as precursors for anthocyanin synthesis. To investigate the CsF3Ha promoter’s regulation in the ‘Zijuan’ tea plant, we cloned the CsF3Ha gene from this plant. It was up-regulated under various visible light conditions (blue, red, and ultraviolet (UV)) and using plant growth regulators (PGRs), including abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellic acid (GA3), salicylic acid (SA), ethephon, and methyl jasmonate (MeJA). The 1691 bp promoter sequence was cloned. The full-length promoter P1 (1691 bp) and its two deletion derivatives, P2 (890 bp) and P3 (467 bp), were fused with the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene, and were introduced into tobacco via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. GUS staining, activity analysis, and relative expression showed that visible light and PGRs responded to promoter fragments. The anthocyanin content analysis revealed a significant increase due to visible light and PGRs. These findings suggest that diverse treatments indirectly enhance anthocyanin accumulation in ‘Zijuan’ tea plant leaves, establishing a foundation for further research on CsF3Ha promoter activity and its regulatory role in anthocyanin accumulation.

ABSTRACT: The broiler industry frequently encounters 2 common problems: excessive deposition of abdominal fat and poor quality of meat. However, there are limited nutritional manipulation strategies to address these issues. While Anoectochilus roxburghii (Wall.) Lindl., a traditional Chinese herb, has been shown to have multiple beneficial effects in humans, its potential roles in broiler chickens remain unexplored. In this study, the effects of dietary supplementation with Anoectochilus roxburghii extract (ARE) on growth performance, abdominal fat deposition, meat quality, blood indices, and gut microbiota were investigated in yellow-feather broiler chickens. A total of 90 twenty-one-day-old yellow-feather broilers were randomly divided into 3 treatments, and each treatment included 5 replicates with 6 birds per replicate. Birds were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 0.15, or 0.30% ARE for 6 wk. The results showed that the inclusion of ARE in the diet did not have any significant effect on meat yield (P > 0.05). However, it did lead to a reduction in abdominal fat deposition and an improvement in meat quality (P < 0.05). Mechanistically, the addition of ARE inhibited lipid biosynthesis and enhanced lipid breakdown in both the liver and adipose tissue of the broilers. Furthermore, ARE supplementation increased the antioxidase activities in the muscle and serum of the broilers (P < 0.05). In addition, the supplementation of ARE optimized the diversity and composition of the cecal microbiota, particularly by lowering the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes (P < 0.05). Moreover, the abundance of some bacteria that were positively correlated with abdominal fat deposition was reduced by ARE, and vice versa (P < 0.05). Collectively, the results suggest that ARE is a promising candidate as a feed additive for reducing abdominal fat deposition and improving meat quality in the broiler industry.

BackgroundIt’s challenging for healthcare workers to detect neonatal hypoglycemia due to its rapid progression and lack of aura symptoms. This may lead to brain function impairment for the newborn, placing a significant care burden on the family and creating an economic burden for society. Tools for early diagnosis of neonatal hypoglycemia are lacking. This study aimed to identify newborns at high risk of developing neonatal hypoglycemia early by developing a risk prediction model.MethodsUsing a retrospective design, pairs (470) of women and their newborns in a tertiary hospital from December 2021 to September 2022 were included in this study. Socio-demographic data and clinical data of mothers and newborns were collected. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to screen optimized factors. A neonatal hypoglycemia risk nomogram was constructed using R software, and the calibration curve and receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC) was utilized to evaluate model performance.ResultsFactors integrated into the prediction risk nomogram were maternal age (odds ratio [OR] =1.10, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.17), fasting period (OR=1.07, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.12), ritodrine use (OR=2.00, 95% CI: 1.05, 3.88), gestational diabetes mellitus (OR=2.13, 95% CI: 1.30, 3.50), gestational week (OR=0.80, 95% CI: 0.66, 0.96), fetal distress (OR=1.76, 95% CI: 1.11, 2.79) and neonatal body mass index (OR=1.50, 95% CI: 1.24, 1.84). The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.79 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.75, 0.82), specificity was 0.82, and sensitivity was 0.62.ConclusionThe prediction model of this study demonstrated good predictive performance. The development of the model identifies advancing maternal age, an extended fasting period before delivery, ritodrine use, gestational diabetes mellitus diagnosis, fetal distress diagnosis and an increase in neonatal body mass index increase the probability of developing neonatal hypoglycemia, while an extended gestational week reduces the probability of developing neonatal hypoglycemia.

Abstract The transportation sector is a crucial source of greenhouse gas emissions, and the degree of its low-carbon transformation is closely related to the achievement of China’s carbon neutrality. Based on high-frequency passenger vehicle sales data and motor vehicle real-time monitoring big data, we developed a low-carbon transition planning model of China road transport (CRT-LCTP) to explore the pathways toward carbon neutrality. The study found that although the number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) increased four times from 2016 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of road traffic emissions was still as high as 20.5%. The current transportation electrification may only reduce 0.6% of the total emissions in this sector, and it could be increased to 1.4% if the electricity completely came from clean energy. Under the enhanced policy scenario, the transport sector could peak its carbon emissions at around of 2030, with the peak level being 1330.98 Mt. Transportation electrification along could not meet the climate targets in 2060, and the continued inertia of fuel vehicles will slow the path of the road transport toward carbon neutrality, which depends on the forced elimination of fuel vehicles and more substantive decarbonization measures.

Excessive lipid deposition in layer chickens due to inappropriate feeding adversely affects egg production; however, nutritional manipulation methods to deal with this issue are still limited. β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB), a metabolite of L-leucine, was recently reported as a lipid-lowering nutrient in mice and pigs, although its role in layers had not been investigated. Here, we employed high-fat and high-cholesterol diet (HFHCD)−challenged growing layers as an obese model to explore HMB function in the regulation of lipid metabolism and the potential mechanisms involved. We found that dietary supplementation with (0.05% or 0.10%) HMB significantly reduced HFHCD−induced bodyweight growth in layers, mainly due to reduction in abdominal fat deposition. Mechanistically, HMB supplementation enhanced hepatic bile acid synthesis from cholesterol through elevating expression of Cyp7a1, a gene coding a key enzyme in bile acid synthesis. Furthermore, 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that HMB supplementation remodeled the diversity and composition of the layers’ cecal microbiota, and the abundance of Bacteroidetes at the phylum level were especially affected. Correlation analysis further indicated a strong negative association between Bacteroidetes abundance and lipid metabolism−related parameters. Taken together, these data suggest that dietary HMB supplementation could improve abdominal fat deposition in layers, probably through modulating hepatic bile acid synthesis and gut microbiota function.

IntroductionCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global pandemic and highly contagious, posing a serious threat to human health. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a risk factor for COVID-19 infection. Therefore, it is vital to investigate the intrinsic link between these two diseases.MethodsIn this work, bioinformatics and systems biology techniques were used to detect the mutual pathways, molecular biomarkers, and potential drugs between COVID-19 and CRC.ResultsA total of 161 common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified based on the RNA sequencing datasets of the two diseases. Functional analysis was performed using ontology keywords, and pathway analysis was also performed. The common DEGs were further utilized to create a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and to identify hub genes and key modules. The datasets revealed transcription factors-gene interactions, co-regulatory networks with DEGs-miRNAs of common DEGs, and predicted possible drugs as well. The ten predicted drugs include troglitazone, estradiol, progesterone, calcitriol, genistein, dexamethasone, lucanthone, resveratrol, retinoic acid, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, some of which have been investigated as potential CRC and COVID-19 therapies.DiscussionBy clarifying the relationship between COVID-19 and CRC, we hope to provide novel clues and promising therapeutic drugs to treat these two illnesses.

Due to overfishing and marine pollution, the status of fishery resources and the ecological environment in the sea areas have considerably changed. The proliferation and release of fishery resources have become the main means of human intervention to maintain and conserve the resource populations. The annual output of Sepiella japonica (S. japonica), once one of the four major seafood species in the East China Sea, has now recovered to a level of 4000 t. However, do the traditional spawning grounds of S. japonica still exist? Have the spawning grounds shifted? These scientific questions are worthy of attention. Based on the survey data of fishery resources and environment at 120 stations in coastal Zhejiang waters from 2015 to 2022, the spatial and temporal distribution and resource center of gravity of S. japonica in springtime were analyzed. Random forest (RF) was used to explain the importance of six environmental variables, including water depth, sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity, chlorophyll a, pH, and dissolved oxygen. The generalized additive model (GAM) nonparametric smoothing function was used to analyze the relationship between environmental factors and the distribution of S. japonica inhabiting the offshore areas of Zhejiang province, and the effects of environmental factors on spawning habitat selection of S. japonica were revealed. This study found that there was a significant interannual variation in S. japonica resources, with an overall increasing trend in the resource. The spawning grounds were mainly distributed in the Jiushan Islands Marine Reserve, the Dachen Islands Marine Reserve, and their nearby sea areas. The resource peaked at latitude 28.3° N. Additionally, the most important variables affecting the distribution of S. japonica were depth of water, followed by sea surface salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll a. S. japonica mainly inhabited sea areas with a depth of 15~25 m and a sea surface salinity of 26~32. When the pH ranged from 7.6 to 8.3, dissolved oxygen ranged from 6 to 9 mg/L, sea surface temperature ranged from 14 to 17 °C, and chlorophyll a ranged from 2.5 to 5 µg/L, S. japonica was more likely to be present. This study provides insights into the spatial distribution of S. japonica in offshore Zhejiang province, offering a reference for the rational utilization and scientific protection of this resource.

Avian reovirus (ARV) infection is prevalent in farmed poultry and causes viral arthritis and severe immunosuppression. The spleen plays a very important part in protecting hosts against infectious pathogens. In this research, transcriptome and translatome sequencing technology were combined to investigate the mechanisms of transcriptional and translational regulation in the spleen after ARV infection. On a genome-wide scale, ARV infection can significantly reduce the translation efficiency (TE) of splenic genes. Differentially expressed translational efficiency genes (DTEGs) were identified, including 15 upregulated DTEGs and 396 downregulated DTEGs. These DTEGs were mainly enriched in immune regulation signaling pathways, which indicates that ARV infection reduces the innate immune response in the spleen. In addition, combined analyses revealed that the innate immune response involves the effects of transcriptional and translational regulation. Moreover, we discovered the key gene IL4I1, the most significantly upregulated gene at both the transcriptional and translational levels. Further studies in DF1 cells showed that overexpression of IL4I1 could inhibit the replication of ARV, while inhibiting the expression of endogenous IL4I1 with siRNA promoted the replication of ARV. Overexpression of IL4I1 significantly downregulated the mRNA expression of IFN-β, LGP2, TBK1 and NF-κB; however, the expression of these genes was significantly upregulated after inhibition of IL4I1, suggesting that IL4I1 may be a negative feedback effect of innate immune signaling pathways. In addition, there may be an interaction between IL4I1 and ARV σA protein, and we speculate that the IL4I1 protein plays a regulatory role by interacting with the σA protein. This study not only provides a new perspective on the regulatory mechanisms of the innate immune response after ARV infection but also enriches the knowledge of the host defense mechanisms against ARV invasion and the outcome of ARV evasion of the host’s innate immune response.

The corrosion of rebars will change the mechanical properties of the reinforced concrete structure, leading to the decline in the structural strength, which seriously threatens the safety and stability of buildings and power equipment foundations. Hence, it is of great significance to detect the internal corrosion of reinforced concrete structures. In this paper, a nondestructive detection method for detecting the corrosion in reinforced concrete structures based on microwave was proposed, and the corrosion state of rebar can be evaluated by the change of microwave information. Compared with other detection methods, microwave nondestructive detection has the advantages of low energy consumption, strong penetration, no contact, and small equipment volume and weight. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method, a microwave nondestructive detection simulation test platform was built and reinforced concrete test models with different corrosion lengths and depths were made. The influences of concrete parameters, the microwave frequency, and the lifting distance of the waveguide were analyzed. The frequency sweeping and moving scanning detection methods of the waveguide were carried out for the test models with different corrosion defects, and the changes of microwave S-parameters under different corrosion defects were obtained. The results show that when the waveguide is placed horizontally by the frequency sweeping detection method, the corrosion length detection effect of rebar is better. When the waveguide is placed vertically by the frequency sweeping detection method, the corrosion depth can be identified and the amplitude of transmission coefficient increases with the increase in the corrosion depth. The corrosion length of rebars can be identified quantitatively by the moving scanning detection method of the waveguide.

Posttranslational modifications (PTMs) of proteins, particularly acetylation, phosphorylation, and ubiquitination, play critical roles in the host innate immune response. PTMs’ dynamic changes and the crosstalk among them are complicated. To build a comprehensive dynamic network of inflammation-related proteins, we integrated data from the whole-cell proteome (WCP), acetylome, phosphoproteome, and ubiquitinome of human and mouse macrophages. Our datasets of acetylation, phosphorylation, and ubiquitination sites helped identify PTM crosstalk within and across proteins involved in the inflammatory response. Stimulation of macrophages by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) resulted in both degradative and non-degradative ubiquitination. Moreover, this study contributes to the interpretation of the roles of known inflammatory molecules and the discovery of novel inflammatory proteins.

Excessive abdominal fat deposition in chickens is a major concern in the poultry industry. Nutritional interventions are a potential solution, but current options are limited. Asiaticoside (Asi), a herbal extract, has shown positive effects in animals, but its impact on poultry lipid metabolism is still unknown. In this study, the effects of dietary Asi on yellow-feathered chicken lipid metabolism and its potential mechanisms were investigated. A total of 120 chickens were randomly divided into three groups, with five replicates per group and 8 chickens per replicate. The chickens were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 0.01, or 0.05% Asi for 6 wk. The results showed that Asi down-regulated lipogenic gene expression and up-regulated lipid-breakdown-related genes in both the liver and fat tissues of the chickens, which resulted in a half reduction in abdominal fat while not affecting meat yield. Mechanistically, the hepatic and adipose PI3K/AKT pathway may be involved in Asi-induced fat loss in chickens as revealed by computer-aided reverse drug target prediction and gene expression analysis. Moreover, Asi ingestion also significantly modified the cecal microbiota of the chickens, resulting in a reduced Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio and decreased abundance of bacteria positively correlated with abdominal fat deposition such as Ruminococcus, while increasing the abundance of bacteria inversely correlated with abdominal fat deposition such as Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, and Blautia. Collectively, these data suggest that Asi could ameliorate the abdominal fat deposition in yellow-feathered chickens, probably through modulating the PI3K/AKT pathway and gut microbiota function.

Tea’s biochemical compounds and flavor quality vary depending on its grade ranking. Dianhong Congou black tea (DCT) is a unique tea category produced using the large-leaf tea varieties from Yunnan, China. To date, the flavor characteristics and critical components of two grades of high-quality DCT, single-bud-grade DCT (BDCT), and special-grade DCT (SDCT) manufactured mainly with single buds and buds with one leaf, respectively, are far from clear. Herein, comparisons of two grades were performed by the integration of human sensory evaluation, an electronic tongue, chromatic differences, the quantification of major components, and metabolomics. The BDCT possessed a brisk, umami taste and a brighter infusion color, while the SDCT presented a comprehensive taste and redder liquor color. Quantification analysis showed that the levels of total polyphenols, catechins, and theaflavins (TFs) were significantly higher in the BDCT. Fifty-six different key compounds were screened by metabolomics, including catechins, flavone/flavonol glycosides, amino acids, phenolic acids, etc. Correlation analysis revealed that the sensory features of the BDCT and SDCT were attributed to their higher contents of catechins, TFs, theogallin, digalloylglucose, and accumulations of thearubigins (TRs), flavone/flavonol glycosides, and soluble sugars, respectively. This report is the first to focus on the comprehensive evaluation of the biochemical compositions and sensory characteristics of two grades of high-quality DCT, advancing the understanding of DCT from a multi-dimensional perspective.

Power calculation is a necessary step when planning genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to ensure meaningful findings. Statistical power of GWAS depends on the genetic architecture of phenotype, sample size, and study design. While several computer programs have been developed to perform power calculation for single SNP association testing, it might be more appropriate for GWAS power calculation to address the probability of detecting any number of associated SNPs. In this paper, we derive the statistical power distribution across causal SNPs under the assumption of a point-normal effect size distribution. We demonstrate how key outcome indices of GWAS are related to the genetic architecture (heritability and polygenicity) of the phenotype through the power distribution. We also provide a fast, flexible and interactive power calculation tool which generates predictions for key GWAS outcomes including the number of independent significant SNPs, the phenotypic variance explained by these SNPs, and the predictive accuracy of resulting polygenic scores. These results could also be used to explore the future behaviour of GWAS as sample sizes increase further. Moreover, we present results from simulation studies to validate our derivation and evaluate the agreement between our predictions and reported GWAS results.

Objective: Cyclin C (CCNC) is the most conserved subunit of the Mediator complex, which is an important transcription cofactor. Recently, we have found that CCNC facilitates brown adipogenesis in vitro by activating C/EBPα-dependent transcription. However, the role of CCNC in brown adipose tissue (BAT) in vivo remains unclear. Methods: We generated conditional knock-out mice by crossing Ccncflox/flox mice with Myf5Cre, Ucp1Cre or AdipoqCre transgenic mice to investigate the role of CCNC in BAT development and function. We applied glucose and insulin tolerance test, cold exposure and indirect calorimetry to capture the physiological phenotypes and used immunostaining, immunoblotting, qRT-PCR, RNA-seq and cell culture to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Results: Here, we show that deletion of CCNC in Myf5+ progenitor cells caused BAT paucity, despite the fact that there was significant neonatal lethality. Mechanistically different from in vitro, CCNC deficiency impaired the proliferation of embryonic brown fat progenitor cells without affecting brown adipogenesis or cell death. Interestingly, CCNC deficiency robustly reduced age-dependent lipid accumulation in differentiated brown adipocytes in all three mouse models. Mechanistically, CCNC in brown adipocytes is required for lipogenic gene expression through the activation of the C/EBPα/GLUT4/ChREBP axis. Consistent with the importance of de novo lipogenesis under carbohydrate-rich diets, high-fat diet (HFD) feeding abolished CCNC deficiency -caused defects of lipid accumulation in BAT. Although insulin sensitivity and response to acute cold exposure were not affected, CCNC deficiency in Ucp1+ cells enhanced the browning of white adipose tissue (beiging) upon prolonged cold exposure. Conclusions: Together, these data indicate an important role of CCNC-Mediator in the regulation of BAT development and lipid accumulation in brown adipocytes.

Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) is widely used as a health food and medicine because it is rich in polysaccharides, polyphenols, and flavonoids; it is precisely because noni is rich in these substances that people usually like to soak it in liquor to drink. This study sought to maximize the main active constituents (polysaccharides, polyphenols, and flavonoid s) dissolved in liquor and spirits soaked with noni fruit, using ethanol as the solvent to optimize the extraction conditions using response surface methodology. The highest polysaccharide yield of 16.35% was found at 60 °C for 3.5 h, a liquid-solid ratio of 52 mL/g, and an ethanol concentration of 25%. The optimal extraction conditions for polyphenols were 75 °C for 1.5 h, a liquid-solid ratio of 90 mL/g, and an ethanol concentration of 50%, resulting in a 10.37% yield. The optimum extraction conditions for flavonoids were 75 °C for 1 h, a liquid-solid ratio of 70 mL/g, and an ethanol concentration of 100%, with 1.35% yield. Many active ingredients, including polysaccharides, polyphenols, and flavonoids, were obtained via alcohol extraction of noni fruit, suggesting that liquor and spirits soaked with noni fruit are novel and promising types. This study provides a technical reference for the production of high-quality noni liquor. It is recommended to use the best conditions for the extract of polysaccharides, polyphenols, and flavonoids, and blending them to obtain the desired degree of alcohol.

Detecting defects in grounded flat steel is essential for ensuring the safety and reliability of transmission tower grounding devices. However, traditional inspection methods, such as physical excavation and verification, are costly and time-consuming. This paper proposes a corrosion defect detection method for flat steel transmission tower grounding devices based on electromagnetic ultrasonic SH waves. In addition, using commercial software, a three-dimensional finite element simulation model of grounded flat steel with simulated pitting corrosion defects is constructed. The specified displacements applied to multiple surface sources mimic the horizontal shear vibrations generated by the electromagnetic ultrasonic transducer on the surface of the grounded flat steel during actual inspection. A simulation was used to investigate the propagation and attenuation characteristics of shear-horizontal ultrasonic SH0guided waves for simulated corrosion defects with various geometric configurations in grounded flat steel. The simulation investigated the propagation and attenuation characteristics of the SH0 wave in grounded flat steel and the detection of various defects for linear analysis of the results. The simulation results show that the attenuation of the electromagnetic ultrasonic guided wave is small, at only 0.0016 dB/mm, and the displacement amplitude of the echo signal decreases with the increase of the SH0 wave propagation distance. Increasing the depth and length of corrosion defects increases the echo signal amplitude. At the same time, the width of corrosion defects has little effect on the echo amplitude. Finally, a flat steel defect detection experiment was conducted, and the experimental results fit with the simulation to verify the accuracy of the simulation model. This detection method introduces a new idea for the on-site detection and quantitative identification of corrosion defects in grounded flat steel, which has significant reference value and can provide a more effective and economical method for ensuring the safety and dependability of transmission tower grounding devices.

Introduction Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread rapidly to more than 200 countries and regions worldwide. Although several options have been implemented in attempts to control the rate of COVID-19 infection, the mortality rates remain high. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether patients with severe COVID-19 will benefit from the combination of anticoagulant and glucocorticoid therapy. Methods A single-center retrospective cohort study of patients with COVID-19 was performed. Several factors influencing patients with COVID-19 have been analyzed retrospectively, including basic conditions, inflammatory factors, coagulation parameters, medications, and outcomes. Continuous and categorical variables have been evaluated via binary logistic regression analysis to predict mortality. The association between anticoagulant treatment and outcomes has also been evaluated, stratifying patients according to glucocorticoid treatment. Results 61 patients with severe COVID-19, including 23 critically ill patients have been enrolled in the study. In those with severe and critical illness COVID-19, mortality rate was lower in those who received combined anticoagulant and glucocorticoid with odds ratio of 0.003 ( p = 0.042) and 0.031 ( p = 0.046), respectively. In cases of severe COVID-19, those who were treated with both anticoagulant and glucocorticoid had lower mortality (17.6%) than those treated with glucocorticoid alone (31.8%), although this did not reach statistical significance ( p = 0.321). In the critically ill COVID-19 patients who received both anticoagulant and glucocorticoid, there was significantly lower mortality (30%) than those who received glucocorticoid alone (77.8%) ( p = 0.047). Seventy-five percent of non-survivors of COVID-19 met the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis criteria of disseminated intravascular coagulation (total points ≥5). Conclusion Patients with severe COVID-19 or critically ill patients with COVID-19 may benefit from the combination therapy of anticoagulant and glucocorticoid. As the disease getting severe, more benefits may be obtained from the combination therapy.

Abstract To enhance the compatibility between the polymer‐based electrolytes and electrodes, and promote the interfacial ion conduction, a novel approach to engineer the interfaces between all‐solid‐state composite polymer electrolyte and electrodes using thin layers of ferroelectrics is introduced. The well‐designed and ferroelectric‐engineered composite polymer electrolyte demonstrates an attractive ionic conductivity of 7.9 × 10–5 S cm–1 at room temperature. Furthermore, the ferroelectric engineering is able to effectively suppress the growth of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) at the interface between polymer electrolytes and Na metal electrodes, and it can also enhance the ion diffusion across the electrolyte‐ferroelectric‐cathode/anode interfaces. Notably, an extraordinarily high discharge capacity of 160.3 mAh g–1, with 97.4% in retention, is achieved in the ferroelectric‐engineered all‐solid‐state Na metal cell after 165 cycles at room temperature. Moreover, outstanding stability is demonstrated that a high discharge capacity retention of 86.0% is achieved over 180 full charge/discharge cycles, even though the cell has been aged for 2 months. This work provides new insights in enhancing the long‐cyclability and stability of solid‐state rechargeable batteries.

Plant long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are widely accepted to play crucial roles during diverse biological processes. In recent years, thousands of lncRNAs related to the establishment of symbiosis, root nodule organogenesis and nodule development have been identified in legumes. However, lncRNAs involved in nodule senescence have not been reported. In this study, senescence-related lncRNAs were investigated in Medicago truncatula nodules by high-throughput strand-specific RNA-seq. A total of 4576 lncRNAs and 126 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs) were identified. We found that more than 60% lncRNAs were associated with transposable elements, especially TIR/Mutator and Helitron DNA transposons families. In addition, 49 DElncRNAs were predicted to be the targets of micro RNAs. Functional analysis showed that the largest sub-set of differently expressed target genes of DElncRNAs were associated with the membrane component. Of these, nearly half genes were related to material transport, suggesting that an important function of DElncRNAs during nodule senescence is the regulation of substance transport across membranes. Our findings will be helpful for understanding the functions of lncRNAs in nodule senescence and provide candidate lncRNAs for further research.

Excess dietary fructose intake is a major public health concern due to its deleterious effect to cause various metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. However, little is known about the effects of high-fructose consumption during pregnancy on offspring metabolic health in adulthood. Here, we show that maternal consumption of 20% (w/v) fructose water during pregnancy does not alter the metabolic balance of offspring with a chow diet, but predisposes them to obesity, fatty liver, and insulin resistance when challenged by a high-fat diet. Mechanistically, diet-induced brown fat reprogramming and global energy expenditure in offspring of fructose-fed dams are impaired. RNA-seq analysis of the fetal brown fat tissue reveals that the myogenic pathway is predominantly upregulated in the fructose-treated group. Meanwhile, circulating fructose level is found to be significantly elevated in both fructose-fed dams and their fetuses. Importantly fructose gavage also acutely activates the myogenic program in mice brown fat. Together, our data suggest that maternal high-fructose intake impairs fetal brown fat development, resultantly attenuates diet-induced thermogenesis and causes metabolic disorders in adult offspring probably through inducing myogenic signature in brown fat at the fetal stage.

Abstract Background This research was to develop a special method for enriching Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) of Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by Glypican-3 immunoliposomes (GPC3-IML), and to analyze the correlation between the CTCs count and tumor malignancy, as well as to investigate the mutation characteristics of CTC-derived NGS. Results In this study characterization of physical parameters was performed with the preparation of GPC3-IML. CTCs in peripheral blood of HCC patients were further separated and identified. Immunofluorescence was used to identify CTCs for further counting. By this means, the correlation between CTCs count and clinicopathological features was analyzed, and the genetic mutation characteristics of NGS derived from CTCs were investigated and compared with that of tissue NGS. Results showed that compared with EpCAM and vimentin, GPC-3 had a stronger CTCs separation ability. There was a correlation between "positive" count of CTCs (≥ 5 PV-CTC per 7.5 ml blood) and BCLC stage (P = 0.055). The result of CTC-NGS was consistent with that of tissue-NGS in 60% cases, revealing that KMT2C was a common highly-frequent mutated gene. Abstract Background Noni (Morinda citrifolia Linn.) is a tropical tree that bears climacteric fruit. Previous observations and research have shown that the second day (2 d) after harvest is the most important demarcation point when the fruit has the same appearance as the freshly picked fruit (0 d); however, they are beginning to become water spot appearance. We performed a conjoint analysis of metabolome and transcriptome data for noni fruit of 0 d and 2 d to reveal what happened to the fruit at the molecular level. Genes and metabolites were annotated to KEGG pathways and the co-annotated KEGG pathways were used as a statistical analysis. Results We found 25 pathways that were significantly altered at both metabolic and transcriptional levels, including a total of 285 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 11 differential metabolites through an integrative analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics. The energy metabolism and pathways originating from phenylalanine were disturbed the most. The upregulated resistance metabolites and genes implied the increase of resistance and energy consumption in the postharvest noni fruit. Most genes involved in glycolysis were downregulated, further limiting the available energy. This lack of energy led noni fruit to water spot appearance, a prelude to softening. The metabolites and genes related to the resistance and energy interacted and restricted each other to keep noni fruit seemingly hard within two days after harvest, but actually the softening was already unstoppable. Conclusions This study provides a new insight into the relationship between the metabolites and genes of noni fruit, as well as a foundation for further clarification of the post-ripening mechanism in noni fruit.

The degree of networking has a significant impact on the performance of venture capital firms. Conversely, social network analysis comprises the identification of furthermost prestigious and influential actors, so using social network analysis methods, this paper analyses the structural characteristics and dynamic evolution of venture capital (VC) networks in China and the USA from 2002 to 2017, with a focus on the node degree distribution, the network structure entropy, the centrality, the cliques, and the k-core. The findings from a panel dataset shows that, relative to the VC network in the USA, China’s VC network entities are less integrated and less cooperative. Secondly, the degrees of venture capital firms in China and the USA obey the power law distribution, both with unbalanced distribution nodes and significant differences of the weights among different nodes. Based on the venture capital events this study measures the venture capital networks using important indicators and on the basis of this comparative analysis, optimisation strategies of investment networks against the risk are put forward to promote the development of Chinese agricultural science and technology enterprises.

Abstract Background Intercropping is often used in the tea producing areas where land resources are not so abundant, and the produced green tea is tasted more delicious through a tea-Chinese chestnut intercropping system according to the experience of indigenous farmers. The length and weight of tea leaf increase under this intercropping system and their root systems are stratified vertically and coordinate symbiosis. However, the delicacy mechanism under the intercropping is not fully understood. Results Green tea from the Chinese chestnut–tea intercropping system established in the 1980s ranked highest compared with a pure tea plantation from the same region. Based on the non-targeted metabolomics, 100 differential metabolites were upregulated in the tea leaves from intercropping system relative to monoculture system. Twenty-one amino acids were upregulated and three downregulated in response to the intercropping based on the targeted metabolomics; half of the upregulated amino acids had positive effects on the tea taste. Levels of allantoic acid, sugars, sugar alcohols, and oleic acid were higher and less bitter flavonoids in the intercropping system than those in monoculture system. The upregulated metabolites could promote the quality of tea and its health-beneficial health effects. Flavone and flavonol biosynthesis and phenylalanine metabolism showed the greatest difference. Numerous pathways associated with amino acid metabolism altered, suggesting that the intercropping of Chinese chestnut–tea could greatly influence amino acid metabolism in tea plants. Conclusions These results enhance our understanding of the metabolic mechanisms by which tea quality is improved in the Chinese chestnut–tea intercropping system and demonstrate that there is great potential to improve tea quality at the metabolomic level by adopting such an intercropping system.

To study the influence of the laser power, scanning speed, and cleaning water content on the laser cleaning effect and obtain the best cleaning parameters, this paper conducted a simulation analysis of the laser cleaning process and carried out a pulse laser cleaning of porcelain insulators experiment to verify. The results show that the cleaning rate gradually increases as the laser power increases from 20 W to 25 W. As the scanning speed increases from 1000 mm/s to 2500 mm/s, the laser overlapping rate gradually decreases, and the cleaning takes the lead in increasing and then decreasing. The appropriate cleaning water content is conducive to laser cleaning; when the water content is 0.115 g, the cleaning efficiency reaches the highest value of 98.20%. When the laser power is 25 W, and the scanning speed is 2000 mm/s, the cleaning efficiency can reach the highest value of 96.87%. This paper shows that the reasonable choice of cleaning parameters can effectively clean the insulator surface filth and obtain a better surface morphology.

The high amplitude and steep overvoltage generated by the breaking of the vacuum circuit breaker in the wind farm damages the inter-turn insulation of the transformer. There is a certain difference between the simulation results of the traditional reignition model and the measured overvoltage. It is necessary to improve the simulation model to simulate the overvoltage condition of the transformer more accurately and then select appropriate overvoltage protection measures. In this paper, based on the physical process of dielectric recovery during the opening process of the vacuum circuit breaker, a model of dielectric strength recovery is built to simulate the arc reignition of the vacuum circuit breaker. The model was applied to compare the overvoltage protection effects of RC snubbers, surge arresters, and choke coils. The simulation results show that the overvoltage amplitude and reignition times calculated by the model proposed in this paper are closer to the measured values. Compared with the traditional linear curve reignition model, the accuracy was increased by 24% and 51.2%, respectively. The parameter value of RC snubbers, the connection mode of surge arresters, and the combination mode of choke coil have an influence on overvoltage suppression. Finally, a suitable suppression scheme is proposed by installing a combined arrester on the high-voltage side of the transformer and connecting a choke coil in series, which can limit the phase-to-ground voltage and the phase-to-phase voltage to 2.43 p.u and 3.24 p.u, respectively, and reduce the steepness from 157.2 kV/μs to 22.3 kV/μs.

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) has drawn significant attention due to its suppression of immune functions in animals and even humans. In order to explore the mechanism through which BDE-209 affects the immune system, broiler chicks were fed a diet containing various concentrations of BDE-209 (0, 0.004, 0.04, 0.4, and 4 g/kg) for 42 days. Histopathological observations of immune organs found damaged and necrotic lymphocytes in the spleen and bursa, and losses of lymphoid cells in thymic gland. The activities of catalase, glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase in both the spleen and serum were affected by BDE-209. Obvious bioaccumulation effect was found in spleen tissues (high to 1339 ± 181.9 μg/kg). Furthermore, transcriptome sequencing analyses of the spleen identified 424 upregulated and 301 downregulated DEGs, and the cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction signal pathway was most significantly enriched based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database. Quantitative real-time PCR affirmed the decreased expressions of interleukin IL18, IL18R1, IL18RAP, IL21, as well as interferon gamma IFNG and tumor necrosis factor superfamily members TNFSF8, indicating significant interference to immunomodulation function and possible disease progression in inflammatory effects resulting from BDE-209 exposure. The immunotoxicity of BDE-209 may cause the suppression of immune and physiological functions of spleen cells, leading to inflammation and apoptosis and ultimately spleen atrophy.

AimsThe present study aimed to compare the effects of left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP) on cardiac function and clinical outcomes in patients with left bundle branch block (LBBB) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) >35 vs. ≤35%.Methods and ResultsThirty-six consecutive patients with LBBB and LVEF 35% group (70 ± 8 years, 9 male), the success rate was 81.0% (17/21). QRSd significantly decreased from 174 ± 23 ms to 108 ± 13 ms (P < 0.001). The pacing threshold and R-wave amplitude were 0.6 ± 0.2 V @ 0.5 ms and 12 ± 7 mV, respectively. In LVEF ≤ 35% group (69 ± 5 years, 9 male), the success rate was 73.3% (11/15) with QRSd decreasing from 188 ± 25 ms to 107 ± 11 ms (P < 0.001). The hyperresponders to LBBAP (functional recovery and LVEF ≥ 50%) in LVEF > 35% group was 52.9%, which were almost twice of that in LVEF ≤ 35% group (33.3%). Whether patients had LBBAP or left ventricular septal pacing (LVSP), patients in the LVEF > 35% group showed significantly lower incidence of heart failure hospitalizations or death from any cause (hazard ratio in LVEF > 35% group, 0.22; 95%CI, 0.06 to 0.75, P = 0.011).ConclusionsLBBAP can significantly shorten the QRSd and improve cardiac function in LBBB patients with either LVEF > 35 or ≤ 35%. LBBAP should be considered as an effective therapy for preventing the deterioration of cardiac function in early-stage heart failure patients with LBBB and LVEF > 35%.
