Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) have attracted increasing attention due to their excellent flexibility, chemical stability, processability and greenness. The traditional processes generally limit them to civil and industrial applications, but electrospun TPU nanofibers with high porosity, high specific surface area and superior mechanical properties are promising in emerging fields. TPU nanofibers’ properties are affected by various electrospinning parameters, such as solution concentration, applied voltage, flow rate and rotational speed. Thus, 29 sets of experiments were designed here by the efficient and low-cost response surface methodology (RSM). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that the model agrees well with experimental results, and solution concentration is the most crucial parameter affecting nanofibers’ morphology and diameter. Based on it, the impacts of solution concentration and orientation on the mechanical properties of the TPU nanofiber membrane were investigated. Benefiting from the stress transfer and network deformation, the TPU nanofiber membranes parallel to the collection direction possessed the highest stress strength (23.71 MPa), while the nanofiber membranes vertical showed the widest strain range (485%). This study provides useful guidance for the preparation of high-performance TPU nanofibers, contributing to expanding its applicability in emerging fields such as biomedical, filtration and separation, and flexible sensing.

Abstract Civic scientific literacy (CSL) is a fundamental indicator of social development and national literacy and is very important for personal well-being and national competitiveness. To be in line with the technological advancements and demands of the current era, we focused on “science engagement”, which is now considered an important approach to enhance the CSL of the general public, and developed a 4-dimensional CSL assessment framework based on the crucial elements for citizens to engage in science. The 4 dimensions are scientific knowledge (SK), scientific method (SM), problem-solving (PS), and scientific thought and spirit of science (STSS). With this framework, a CSL measurement instrument including 50 items was developed. Various validity evidence, including evidence with reliability close to or exceeding 0.8 for all four dimensions, supports the use of the instrument to provide a valuation of CSL. Age, location type (urban or rural), educational background, and occupation are all significant factors associated with CSL.

Abstract Compared with ordinary emulsions, the unique structures endow double emulsions with special functions, which makes them have broad prospects in delivering biologically active substances and replacing fats. In recent years, due to the instability of double emulsions, numerous experiments have been carried out on their preparation technology as well as stabilization methods. This review emphatically summarizes the research progress of double emulsions, including preparation techniques, factors affecting stability, stabilization mechanisms, and related applications. At present, in addition to the traditional mechanical agitation and ultrasonic emulsification, membrane emulsification, phase inversion, and microfluidic emulsification are the main research directions, all of which can improve the stability. Moreover, the stabilizer is also a crucial factor affecting the stability of the double emulsion. Hence, in this article emphasis is placed on surfactants, biopolymers, and solid particles. The applications of double emulsions in food industry can be divided into the following categories: encapsulating substances, controlling the release, and being served as fat substitutes. Furthermore, in the future, the main challenges are to commercialize the double emulsions and enhance their safety in food applications. Additionally, developing high internal phase Pickering double emulsions and O/W/O double emulsions may become the major research trends.

The present paper explores the ballistic performance of B4C/6061Al laminated targets with the typical configurations of double-layer, sandwich and gradient impacted by 7.62 mm API projectile. Damage patterns were characterized and ballistic mechanism of B4C/6061Al laminated targets was revealed by damage analysis combined with finite element simulation. It is found no interlayer delamination occurs in all B4C/6061Al laminated targets even after being penetrated, which leads to a dependable comparison of different configuration without the interruption of delamination. The protection effect of the laminated configurations is better than that of the homogeneous target, except for the hard-soft-hard sandwich configuration. Among them, the gradient configuration is considered as the optimal configuration due to the supreme ballistic resistance. An important design principle of B4C/6061Al laminated composites is proposed to improve the ballistic performance.

In the present work, the corrosion behavior of the B4C/pure Al composite in a Cl− containing environment is investigated. Thereby, the B4C/pure Al composites have been subjected to the different heat treatments to highlight the impact of the corrosion behavior at the different interfaces. The results of current sensing atomic force microscope (CSAFM) and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPFM) show that the dissolution of the Al matrix is relevant to the micro-galvanic corrosion between anodic Al matrix and cathodic B4C particles. The as quenched (AQ) composites with a higher volta potential difference (VPD) show inferior anticorrosion property than that of the as produced (AP) composites and the as annealed (AA) composites. By combining X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and geometric phase analysis (GPA), the higher residual stress and obvious interfacial strain between the B4C particles and the Al matrix of the AP samples is detected, which result in increasing the driving force of micro-galvanic corrosion.

Abstract Curriculum standards are a critical component of a nation’s educational system and directly impact talent development and overall national development. Most studies on curriculum standards focus on a single competency. This study aims to understand the extent to which the competencies outlined in the OECD 2030-oriented learning framework are reflected in China’s compulsory education biology curriculum as a whole and within individual content subjects. In this study, we conducted a content analysis of China’s National Biology Curriculum Standards (Grades 7–9). The result shows that the standards cover 20 of the 28 competencies, focusing on foundational literacies, transformative competencies and competency development. We found that certain competencies, such as Action, Literacy, and Problem-solving, were emphasized across content subjects, while other competencies were uniquely emphasized within specific content subjects. This study provides a comprehensive view of China’s National Biology Curriculum Standards (Grades 7–9) from the perspective of future literacy development and can inform efforts to reform the curriculum.

The Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) is widely used for characterizing the mechanical behavior of materials at high strain rates. One of the most challenging factors is achieving constant strain rate (CSR) loading of the specimen at a certain strain rate. Obtaining the effective incident pulse based on the experimental material for achieving CSR loading remains unresolved. This research focuses on obtaining the proper incident pulse for achieving constant strain rate loading using the pulse-shaping technique. A parameterized objective incident model in terms of the strain rate and quasi-static (or dynamic stress–strain) behavior of the material is established utilizing the three-wave method. Experimental pulses that closely resemble the desired objective pulses can be generated by adjusting parameters such as the geometry of the shaper, the shaper material, striker velocities, and the length of the striker according to the pulse-shaping model. The model is applied to the design of the incident pulse for B4CP/2024Al composite material, and the dynamic stress–strain curves at different strain rates are obtained under CSRs. This model provides effective guidance for selecting an appropriate shaper and achieving CSR loading in SHPB tests.

Abstract Background Using a rotary instrument or ultrasonic instrument for tooth preparation is a basic operation in the dental clinic that can produce a significant number of droplets and aerosols. The dental droplet and aerosol can lead to the transfer of harmful germs. The goal of this study was to analyze the properties of microbiological aerosol created by droplets and aerosol generated by three common tooth-preparation instruments. Methods Streptococcus mutans UA159 was used as the biological tracer to visualize the droplets and aerosols. The passive sampling method was used to map the three-dimensional spatial distribution and the six-stage Andersen microbial sampler (AMS) was used as the active sampling method to catch aerosol particles at a specific time. Results The aerosol concentration is related to instruments, three-dimensional spatial distribution, and dissipation time. Most aerosols were generated by air turbines. More microorganisms are concentrated at the 1.5 m plane. The majority of the post dental procedure contamination was detected within the 0–10-min period and it decreased rapidly within 30 min. Conclusion This study is conducive to the proposal and improvement of relevant infection control measures in dental procedures and provides a basis for the assessment of measures, reducing the risk of nosocomial infection.

The instructional design and technology field are dynamic, requiring instructional designers to stay abreast through timely professional learning. Social media offers characteristics to collapse the time, geographical, and financial limitations of informal professional learning, but challenges exist. Continuous professional learning requires proactive actions, wherein self-regulated learning (SRL) plays an important role. However, not all professionals know the effective strategies to promote SRL skills. This study examines instructional designers’ (N = 17) experiences of professional learning on social media through an SRL lens. Data collected through semi-structured interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings include SRL strategies conducted by instructional designers and the challenges they faced. This study informs instructional-design professionals and educators of ways to encourage continuous professional learning using social media while fostering SRL simultaneously.

A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is regarded as the first choice of high-efficiency and clean power generation technology in the 21st century due to its characteristics of high power generation efficiency and low pollutant emission. In this paper, hydrogen is used as a fuel for SOFCs using the EBSILON platform. A sensitivity analysis of the solid oxide fuel cell–gas turbine (SOFC–GT) system with steam reinjection is carried out to investigate the effect of the steam reinjection mass flow rate on the improvement of the electrical efficiency of the system and on the values of the other parameters. The results show that the variation in the steam reinjection mass flow rate has an effect on other parameters. Changes in several parameters affect the electrical efficiency of the system, which reaches 74.11% at a pressure ratio of 10, SOFC inlet temperature of 783.15 K, turbine back pressure of 70 kPa, and steam reinjection mass flow rate of 6.16 kg/s. Future research can optimize the overall parameter selection of the system in terms of economy and other aspects.

For decades, the defined antibody reactive proteins of Ehrlichia chaffeensis and E. canis were limited to a small group with linear antibody epitopes. Recently, our laboratory has utilized an immunomics-based approach to rapidly screen and identify undefined Ehrlichia chaffeensis and E. canis antigenic proteins and antibody epitopes. In this study, we analyzed the remaining portion (~50%) of the E. chaffeensis and E. canis proteomes (n = 444 and n = 405 proteins, respectively), that were not examined in previous studies, to define the complete immunomes of these important pathogens. Almost half of the E. chaffeensis proteins screened (196/444) reacted with antibodies in convalescent HME patient sera, while only 43 E. canis proteins reacted with CME dog sera. New major immunoreactive proteins were identified in E. chaffeensis (n = 7) and E. canis (n = 1), increasing the total number of E. chaffeensis (n = 14) and E. canis proteins (n = 18) that exhibited antibody reactivity comparable to well-defined major antigenic proteins (TRP120 and TRP19). All of the E. chaffeensis but only some E. canis major immunoreactive proteins contained major conformation-dependent antibody epitopes. The E. chaffeensis immunoreactive proteins were generally small (< 250 amino acids; ~27kDa) and the E. canis proteins were slightly larger (> 320 amino acids; ~35 kDa). The majority of these new Ehrlichia major immunoreactive proteins were predicted to be type I secreted effectors, some of which contained transmembrane domains. Characterization of the immunomes of E. chaffeensis and E. canis and understanding the host specific Ehrlichia immune responses will facilitate identification of protective antigens and define the biophysical epitope characteristics vital to effective vaccine development for the ehrlichioses.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques in the brain. Aβ1–42 is the main component of Aβ plaque, which is toxic to neuronal cells. Si nanowires (Si NWs) have the advantages of small particle size, high specific surface area, and good biocompatibility, and have potential application prospects in suppressing Aβ aggregation. In this study, we employed the vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) growth mechanism to grow Si NWs using Au nanoparticles as catalysts in a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system. Subsequently, these Si NWs were transferred to a phosphoric acid buffer solution (PBS). We found that Si NWs significantly reduced cell death in PC12 cells (rat adrenal pheochromocytoma cells) induced by Aβ1–42 oligomers via double staining with 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and fluorescein diacetate/propyl iodide (FDA/PI). Most importantly, pre-incubated Si NWs largely prevented Aβ1–42 oligomer-induced PC12 cell death, suggesting that Si NWs exerts an anti-Aβ neuroprotective effect by inhibiting Aβ aggregation. The analysis of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) results demonstrates that Si NWs reduce the toxicity of fibrils and oligomers by intervening in the formation of β-sheet structures, thereby protecting the viability of nerve cells. Our findings suggest that Si NWs may be a potential therapeutic agent for AD by protecting neuronal cells from the toxicity of Aβ1–42.

Aluminum matrix composites (AMMCs) have demonstrated substantial potential in the realm of armor protection due to their favorable properties, including low density, high specific stiffness, and high specific strength. These composites are widely employed as structural components and frequently encounter high strain rate loading conditions, including explosions and penetrations during service. And it is crucial to note that under dynamic conditions, these composites exhibit distinct mechanical properties and failure mechanisms compared to static conditions. Therefore, a thorough investigation into the dynamic mechanical behavior of aluminum matrix composites and precise constitutive equations are imperative to advance their application in armor protection. This review aims to explore the mechanical properties, strengthening the mechanism and deformation damage mechanism of AMMCs under high strain rate. To facilitate a comprehensive understanding, various constitutive equations are explored, including phenomenological constitutive equations, those with physical significance, and those based on artificial neural networks. This article provides a critical review of the reported work in this field, aiming to analyze the main challenges and future development directions of aluminum matrix composites in the field of protection.

Introduction The study focused on the influence of tar concentrations, smoking regimen, and smoking behavior, on benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) emission from cigarette mainstream smoke and related health hazards to determine the key factors influencing B[a]P reduction and protection of the smoker’s health. Methods A locally popular brand of cigarettes in Beijing was selected with tar concentrations of 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, and 11 mg/cigarette. Two different machine smoking regimens, the Canada Intense (HCI) regimen and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) regimen, were adopted to collect the cigarette mainstream smoke. The B[a]P emission concentrations were then measured by gas chromatography and mass spectrum. Results The average B[a]P emission was 8.14–17.6 ng/cigarette for the HCI regimen and 0.92–3.46 ng/cigarette for the ISO regimen. As expected, the tar concentrations and B[a]P emissions exhibited a positive relation in both the HCI and ISO regimens, the cancer risk and non-cancer risk increased with an increase in tar concentrations for both the ISO and HCI regimens, and the smoking behavior also affected the B[a]P emissions with a tendency of VB (ventilation blocking) > HVB (half ventilation blocking) > DP (deep puff), under the same smoking regimen. Under the same conditions, the cancer risk and non-cancer risk in men were 1.19 and 1.11 times, respectively, higher than in women. Conclusions The smoking regimen influences the B[a]P emission relatively more than the cigarette tar concentration and smoking behavior. The cancer risk and non-cancer risk are higher in men than in women that possibly due to longer smoking duration and greater smoking intensity.

A digital workflow to acquire actual position of the drill and assess bony preparation accuracy intraoperatively was described. Based on the widely used intraoral scanner, this digital workflow was a relatively practical and economical option for digital intraoperative measurement. As a result, it could help the clinician in accurate verification and immediate correction of the drill position and consequently facilitating the accurate implant placement in implant surgery.

Background: Whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) technology can provide comprehensive DNA methylation at a single-base resolution on a genome-wide scale, and is considered to be the gold standard for the detection of 5-methylcytosine (5 mC). However, the International Human Epigenome Consortium propose a full DNA methylome should have at least 30 fold redundant coverage of the reference genome from a single biological replicate. Therefore, it remains cost prohibitive for large-scale studies. To find a solution, the DNBSEQ-Tx sequencing was developed that can generate up to 6 Tb data in a single run for projects involving large-scale sequencing. Results: In this study, we provided two WGBS library construction methods DNB_PREBSseq and DNB_SPLATseq optimized for the DNBSEQ-Tx sequencer, and demonstrated the performance of these two methods on the DNBSEQ-Tx platform, using the DNA extracted from four different cell lines. We also compared the sequencing data from these two WGBS library construction methods with HeLa cell line data from ENCODE sequenced on Illumina HiSeq X Ten and WGBS data of two other cell lines sequenced on HiSeq2500. Various quality control (QC) analyses such as the base quality scores, methylation-bias (m-bias), and conversion efficiency indicated that the data sequenced on the DNBSEQ-Tx platform met the WGBS-required quality controls. Meanwhile, our data closely resembled the coverage shown by the data generated by the Illumina platform. Conclusions: Our study showed that with our optimized methods, DNBSEQ-Tx could generate high-quality WGBS data with relatively good stability for large-scale WGBS sequencing applications. Thus, we conclude that DNBSEQ-Tx can be used for a wide range of WGBS research.

Obligate intracellular bacteria in the order Rickettsiales are transmitted by arthropod vectors and cause life-threatening infections in humans and animals. While both type 1 and type 4 secretion systems (T1SS and T4SS) have been identified in this group, the most extensive studies of Rickettsiales T1SS and associated effectors have been performed in Ehrlichia. These studies have uncovered important roles for the T1SS effectors in pathobiology and immunity. To evade innate immune responses and promote intracellular survival, Ehrlichia and other related obligate pathogens secrete multiple T1SS effectors which interact with a diverse network of host targets associated with essential cellular processes. T1SS effectors have multiple functional activities during infection including acting as nucleomodulins and ligand mimetics that activate evolutionarily conserved cellular signaling pathways. In Ehrlichia, an array of newly defined major immunoreactive proteins have been identified that are predicted as T1SS substrates and have conformation-dependent antibody epitopes. These findings highlight the underappreciated and largely uncharacterized roles of T1SS effector proteins in pathobiology and immunity. This review summarizes current knowledge regarding roles of T1SS effectors in Rickettsiales members during infection and explores newly identified immunoreactive proteins as potential T1SS substrates and targets of a protective host immune response.

Abstract Bus queue time estimation of a curbside bus stop is essential to evaluate the operation, reliability and performance of a bus system. Arriving buses and served buses on upstream berths form an overflow queue considering the no overtaking principle and limited overtaking principle. The bus dwelling time at the downstream berth may directly influence the capacity at bus stop. This study aims to estimate the queue time attributed to downstream berth blocking effect. The queue delay is modeled as a function of dwell time which is fitting by normal and lognormal distributions. Hence, the queue time should be evaluated by bus dwell time and joint probability density to quantify the negative influence on queue delay. The result indicate that probability distribution versus the queue time in the blocking effect. An illustrative example is presented to reflect the effectiveness of the estimation method. The fitting results further support our theoretical analyses.

In this study, Al-B4C/Al laminated composites with high interlayer bonding strength were fabricated by integrated hot-pressed sintering accompanied with hot rolling. The mechanical properties and interface behavior of the Al-B4C/Al laminated composites were investigated under quasi-static and impact loading. The results show that the Al-B4C/Al laminated composites obtain a high interface bonding strength, because no interlayer delamination occurs even after fractures under quasi-static and impact loads. The Al-B4C/Al laminated composites exhibit a better comprehensive mechanical performance, and the fracture can be delayed due to the high bonding strength interface. Moreover, laminated composites can absorb more impact energy than the monolithic material under impact loading due to the stress transition and relaxation.

Ceramic panel collapse will easily lead to the failure of traditional targets. One strategy to solve this problem is to use separate ceramic units as armor panels. Based on this idea, we propose an aluminum matrix composite using pressure infiltration, containing an array of ceramic balls, the reinforcement of which consists of centimeter-scale SiC balls and micron-scale B4C particles. Three different array layouts were designed and fabricated: compact balls in the front panel (F-C), non-compact balls in the front panel (F-NC), and compact balls inside the target (I-C). The penetration resistance properties were tested using a 12.7 mm armor-piercing incendiary (API). The results show that there are no significant internal defects, and the ceramic balls are well-bonded with the matrix composite. The F-NC structure behaves the best penetration resistance with minimal overall damage; the I-C structure has a large area of spalling and the most serious damage. Finite element simulation reveals that the ceramic balls play a major role in projectile erosion; in the non-compact structure, the composite materials between the ceramic balls can effectively disperse the stress, thereby avoiding the damage caused by direct contact between ceramic balls and improving the efficiency of ceramic ball erosion projectiles. Furthermore, it is essential to have a certain thickness of supporting materials to prevent spalling failure caused by stress wave transmission during penetration. This multi-scale composite exhibits excellent ballistic performance, providing valuable insights for developing anti-penetration composite armor in future applications.

Background: The modulations of lymphocyte subsets and cytokine production due to subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy (SCIT) are not fully clarified. Objective: We investigated the changes in T-lymphocyte subsets and serum Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus-specific immunoglobulin G4 (Der-p sIgG4), as well as cytokine production during Der-p SCIT, in patients with allergic asthma. Methods: This study involved 20 patients with allergic asthma who were receiving 156-week Der-p SCIT and 20 patients without SCIT (non-SCIT). We measured symptom and medication scores (SMS), serum Der-p sIgG4 levels, CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ T regulatory (Treg), CD4+IL-4−IFN-γ+ T-helper (Th) 1, and CD4+IL-4+IFN-γ− Th2 lymphocyte percentages in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with/without Der-p extract stimulation at weeks 0, 4, 12, 16, 52, 104, and 156. Cytokine release inhibition assays were performed by incubation with serum from SCIT and non-SCIT patients, Der-p allergen, and PBMCs. Levels of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-10, IL-13, IL-17, interferon (IFN)-γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 were evaluated in supernatant. Results: We found that SCIT patients had significantly lower SMS after week 52. Der-p sIgG4 levels in SCIT patients significantly increased at week 16 compared with non-SCIT subjects. CD4+IL-4+IFN-γ− Th2% in SCIT patients showed a significant decrease from weeks 104–156 compared with week 0, while no change was observed in CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Treg and CD4+IL-4−IFN-γ+ Th1 percentages. IL-5, IL-13, IL-4, IL-17, and TNF-α levels in supernatant of PBMCs cultured with serum of SCIT patients after 16 weeks showed significant lower levels compared with non-SCIT patients, and showed significant reverse associations with Der-p sIgG4 levels. Conclusion: SCIT induced Dep-p sIgG4 may be involved in downregulating Th2 cytokine production in Der-p allergic asthma patients.

Current methods for the diagnosis and monitoring of bladder cancer are invasive and have suboptimal sensitivity. Liquid biopsy as a non-invasive approach has been capturing attentions recently. To explore the ability of urine-based liquid biopsy in detecting and monitoring genitourinary tumors, we developed a method based on promoter-targeted DNA methylation of urine sediment DNA. We used samples from a primary bladder cancer cohort (n=40) and a healthy cohort (n=40) to train a model and obtained an integrated area under the curve (AUC) > 0.96 in the 10-fold cross-validation, which demonstrated the ability of our method for detecting bladder cancer from the healthy. We next validated the model with samples from a recurrent cohort (n=21) and a non-recurrent cohort (n=19) and obtained an AUC > 0.91, which demonstrated the ability of our model in monitoring the progress of bladder cancer. Moreover, 80% (4/5) of samples from patients with benign urothelial diseases had been considered to be healthy sample rather than cancer sample, preliminarily demonstrating the potential of distinguishing benign urothelial diseases from cancer. Further analysis basing on multiple-time point sampling revealed that the cancer signal in 80% (4/5) patients had decreased as expected when they achieved the recurrent-free state. All the results suggested that our method is a promising approach for noninvasive detection and prognostic monitoring of bladder cancer.

Three-dimensional LiDAR systems that capture point cloud data enable the simultaneous acquisition of spatial geometry and multi-wavelength intensity information, thereby paving the way for three-dimensional point cloud recognition and processing. However, due to the irregular distribution, low resolution of point clouds, and limited spatial recognition accuracy in complex environments, inherent errors occur in classifying and segmenting the acquired target information. Conversely, two-dimensional visible light images provide real-color information, enabling the distinction of object contours and fine details, thus yielding clear, high-resolution images when desired. The integration of two-dimensional information with point clouds offers complementary advantages. In this paper, we present the incorporation of two-dimensional information to form a multi-modal representation. From this, we extract local features to establish three-dimensional geometric relationships and two-dimensional color relationships. We introduce a novel network model, termed MInet (Multi-Information net), which effectively captures features relating to both two-dimensional color and three-dimensional pose information. This enhanced network model improves feature saliency, thereby facilitating superior segmentation and recognition tasks. We evaluate our MInet architecture using the ShapeNet and ThreeDMatch datasets for point cloud segmentation, and the Stanford dataset for object recognition. The robust results, coupled with quantitative and qualitative experiments, demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed method in point cloud segmentation and object recognition tasks.

Demand fluctuations and uncertainty bring challenges to inventory management, and intermittent demand patterns increase the risk of inventory backlogs and raise inventory holding costs. In previous studies on inventory routing problems, different variants have been proposed to cope with complicated industrial scenarios. However, there are few studies on inventory routing problems with intermittent demand patterns. To solve this problem, we introduce a lateral transshipment strategy and build a single-product multi-period inventory routing mixed integer programming model to reduce customers’ inventory backlogs, balance regional inventory, reduce inventory holding costs, and improve inventory management efficiency. Furthermore, we design an adaptive large-neighborhood search algorithm with new operators to improve the solving efficiency. The experimental results show that an appropriate transshipment price can reduce the share of distribution costs. Another finding is that higher-capacity vehicles lead to higher revenue. Our findings not only expand the scope of the IRP domain but also provide actionable management insights for business practitioners.

Abstract Background Nurturing students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers is a major goal of STEM education. Although the relationship between students’ stereotypical beliefs regarding STEM careers and their career interest can be reasonably hypothesized, research investigating the extent to which and how students’ STEM career interest is directly or indirectly influenced by their stereotypical beliefs is lacking. This study investigated how upper primary students’ stereotypical beliefs regarding STEM careers predicted their STEM self-efficacy and STEM career-related outcome expectations and how these constructs predicted their STEM career interest. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse quantitative survey data of 824 fourth- to sixth-grade students and test the hypothesized models. Results Students’ stereotypical beliefs regarding STEM careers negatively predicted their self-efficacy in STEM activities and career-related outcome expectations. Additionally, the students’ self-efficacy in STEM activities and career-related outcome expectations in turn predicted their STEM career interest. Conclusions These results explain the potential indirect effect of STEM stereotypes on students’ career interest through self-efficacy and outcome expectations. The findings highlight the significant role of STEM stereotypes, self-efficacy in STEM activities, and career-related outcome expectations in students’ career development. The implications of this study for STEM education are also discussed.

Students build up their STEM career interest based on their experiences. However, it remains unclear how students reflect on their STEM experiences in light of their understanding of STEM careers. This study aimed to explore how students relate their practices in STEM project-based learning (PBL) with their perceptions of scientists' and engineers' work. A randomly selected sample of students (n =142) participating in a STEM event participated in structured interviews regarding the resemblance between their months-long STEM PBL and scientists' and engineers' work. The data were coded using content analysis mostly by adopting a bottom-up approach followed by statistical analysis. Results showed that the majority of students claimed that their group had done things like scientists, while only about half of the students acknowledged doing things like engineers. The number and aspects of the students' mentioned practices were generally limited, with engineer-like practices more divergent and reflecting their stereotype of engineers working as manual laborers. The results also suggest that students tend to neglect the minds-on but hands-off scientist- or engineer-like practices such as raising a question/problem. The findings address the research gap regarding how students reflect on their STEM PBL experiences in light of career development.

While research illustrates the benefits of interventions designed to improve self-regulated learning (SRL) and academic achievement, far fewer studies have examined the durability of these effects. This review synthesizes research on the lasting effects of 17 comprehensive SRL interventions on variables related to metacognition, cognition, motivation, and achievement in K-12 populations. Results reveal common patterns of design, domain-specificity, intervention complexity, and style of measurement instrument. Intervention effects tend to be durable regarding achievement and SRL but were mixed when presented across multiple measures of SRL. Overall findings imply that SRL interventions can lead to enduring effects on achievement and better achievement outcomes than content-strategy instruction alone and can be implemented successfully in a variety of contexts and subjects.

Capacity estimation of a curbside bus stop is essential to evaluation of its operation, reliability and performance. Arrival buses and served buses will form an overflow queue and an interlocking queue in loading areas with high frequencies. Therefore, bus stop blockage may reduce the stop capacity. The capacity of a bus stop is modelled as a function of the blockage probability, the arrival of buses, and the service time, while considering the no-overtaking principle and allowable-overtaking principle. This study aims to estimate the capacity, minimum arrival time and maximum service time based on the blockage probability and number of berths. The results indicate that congestion can be effectively alleviated by increasing the number of berths when the demand for loaded buses is low due to the significantly changing probability threshold for a NO stop. A congestion and stopping principle is important when multiple bus routes converge at the same bus stop. By combination with an actual case, an optimal overtaking principle is obtained using a computer program written in the MATLAB environment. The developed methodology can be practically applied to determine the loading principle and designated stopping berths for multi-route buses.

Compared with a flat fingerprint, the rolled fingerprint has a larger fingerprint area and can be extracted more minutiae. It has high requirements in many fields, not only in the military environment or the police field but also in many civil application fields. The challenge that has been troubled for a long time is that contact-based rolled fingerprint registration is easy to cause obvious distortion without human experts' supervision, which has a negative impact on fingerprint recognition performance. Due to the elastic deformation of fingertips, the mosaicking gaps in the rolled fingerprint are usually visible but challenging to locate. To address these problems, we propose a novel rolled fingerprint construction algorithm called BlockRFC (Block-based Rolled Fingerprint Construction) in this article. BlockRFC's core idea is to use the fingerprint image block as a processing unit for mosaicking and distortion rectification. BlockRFC is based on a real-time mosaicking framework, which makes it possible to construct a rolled fingerprint while collecting fingerprint images. One distinctive advantage of BlockRFC is that it does not require minutiae or ridge information, but fully utilizes the gray-scale information and foreground area in the fingerprint image block. In this article, we first propose a metric called Mosaicking Gap Rate (MGR), which can effectively quantify the mosaicking gaps in the rolled fingerprints. Experimental results show that the proposed method can not only effectively locate and eliminate the mosaicking gaps but also have better recognition accuracy than previous methods.

Abstract Good's syndrome (GS) is characterized by thymoma combined with adult‐onset immunodeficiency. Diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) is a chronic inflammatory airway disease, which predominantly affects East Asians. Japanese scholars have reported extensively about GS combined with DPB or DPB‐like pulmonary manifestation. However, such reports are rare in China. We report here a case of GS in China with DPB as the prominent manifestation and carry out a literature review accordingly. Our review indicates that in adults with DPB‐like clinical manifestations, thymic lesions should be excluded and related immune function tests should be performed to exclude GS to avoid missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis.

Accurate sales forecasting can provide a scientific basis for the management decisions of enterprises. We proposed the xDeepFM-LSTM combined forecasting model for the characteristics of sales data of apparel retail enterprises. We first used the Extreme Deep Factorization Machine (xDeepFM) model to explore the correlation between the sales influencing features as much as possible, and then modeled the sales prediction. Next, we used the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model for residual correction to improve the accuracy of the prediction model. We then designed and implemented comparison experiments between the combined xDeepFM-LSTM forecasting model and other forecasting models. The experimental results show that the forecasting performance of xDeepFM-LSTM is significantly better than other forecasting models. Compared with the xDeepFM forecasting model, the combined forecasting model has a higher optimization rate, which provides a scientific basis for apparel companies to make adjustments to adjust their demand plans.

Instructional designers perform informal formative evaluation in design practice. An evaluation may be used to locate errors in alignment of instructional objectives or to increase the quality or effectiveness of a design. An instructional design review is similar to peer reviews in higher education which are often structured, and tools are provided to contribute to the review. A study was performed to identify the support structures and tools that contribute to building a community of feedback within the practice of instructional design reviews. Six instructional designers and design managers were interviewed to gather the processes they use in design reviews and to understand their perceptions of the practice. There was an alignment between manager support and an environment that promotes a supportive review. The designers described a "culture of feedback" when there was structure and there were supports provided for reviews.

This study proposes a digital twin (DT) application framework that integrates deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms for the dynamic scheduling of crane transportation in workshops. DT is used to construct the connection between the workshop service system, logical simulation environment, 3D visualization model and physical workshop, and DRL is used to support the core decision in scheduling. First, the dynamic scheduling problem of crane transportation is constructed as a Markov decision process (MDP), and the corresponding double deep Q-network (DDQN) is designed to interact with the logic simulation environment to complete the offline training of the algorithm. Second, the trained DDQN is embedded into the DT framework, and then connected with the physical workshop and the workshop service system to realize online dynamic crane scheduling based on the real-time states of the workshop. Finally, case studies of crane scheduling under dynamic job arrival and equipment failure scenarios are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. The numerical analysis shows that the proposed method is superior to the traditional dynamic scheduling method, and it is also suitable for large-scale problems.

The optoelectronic properties of layered α-MoO3 are greatly limited due to its wide band gap and low carrier concentration. The insertion of hydrogen (H) can effectively tune the band structure and carrier concentration of MoO3. Herein, first-principles calculations were performed to unravel the physical mechanism of a H-doped α-MoO3 system. We found that the modulation of the electronic structure of H-doped MoO3 depends on the doping concentration and position of the H atoms. It was found that the band gap decreases at 8% doping concentration due to the strong coupling between Mo-4d and O-2p orbits when H atoms are inserted into the interlayer. More interestingly, the band gap decreases to an extreme due to the Mo-4d orbit when all the H atoms are inserted into the intralayer only, which has a remarkable effect on light absorption. Our research provides a comprehensive theoretical discussion on the mechanism of H-doped α-MoO3 from the doping positions and doping concentrations, and offers useful strategies on doping modulation of the photoelectric properties of layered transition metal oxides.

As an emerging producer services industry, the logistics industry is the third-largest industry in China. The rapid development of the logistics industry accelerates the optimization and adjustment of the industrial structure, advances the transformation of economic growth, and thus promotes a rapid economic development. It is essential to understand the correlation between the logistics industry and other industries, for the purpose of facilitating other industries by logistics industry. Based on the current status of the logistics industry and the general industrial structure, several concerns about the development of the logistics industry and other industries have been addressed in this paper. A qualitative analysis between the logistics industry and industrial structure has been presented. Furthermore, the development of the logistics industry was quantified with the regional entropy coefficient. A linear regression model of the regional entropy coefficient and other industries data was established to analyze the correlation between logistics and the industrial structure. Then, the gray correlation was analyzed to further verify the correlation degree. The correlation degrees between logistics and industries in Pizhou were (sorted from high to low): primary industry, tertiary industry, and secondary industry. Combining development issues and the obtained correlation, several feasible suggestions are presented that promote the logistics industry on a county scale. The contribution of rheological properties and viscoelasticity of the interfacial adsorbed layer to the emulsification mechanism of enzymatic modified sugar beet pectin (SBP) was studied. The component content of each enzymatic modified pectin was lower than that of untreated SBP. Protein and ferulic acid decreased from 5.52% and 1.08% to 0.54% and 0.13%, respectively, resulting in a decrease in thermal stability, apparent viscosity, and molecular weight (Mw). The dynamic interfacial rheological properties showed that the interfacial pressure and modulus (E) decreased significantly with the decrease of functional groups (especially proteins), which also led to the bimodal distribution of particle size. These results indicated that the superior emulsification property of SBP is mainly determined by proteins, followed by ferulic acid, and the existence of other functional groups also promotes the emulsification property of SBP.

Crystallization kinetics of metal-organic frameworks in conventional organic solvents are usually very slow. Here, the authors show that an ionic liquid medium accelerates considerably the formation of Zr-based metal-organic frameworks that are active catalysts in the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reaction.

As online learners are increasingly diverse, making online learning more inclusive becomes an urgent need. Universal design has been perceived as a viable framework to reach the widest possible range of learners. However, applying universal design to online education has been a challenge to instructors due to different barriers. It is also unclear what evidence-based strategies can be infused into online education. In this systematic review, we selected and analyzed relevant studies and synthesized their designs and findings to explore the trends, strategies, impacts, challenges, and instructors' and students' attitudes toward applying universal design in online environments. We discuss implications for research and practice.

ABSTRACT Ehrlichia chaffeensis is an obligately intracellular bacterium that exhibits tropism for mononuclear phagocytes. The mechanisms involved in E. chaffeensis infection of the host cell and evasion of host defenses are not fully defined, but a subset of type 1 secreted tandem repeat protein (TRP) effectors play important roles. Recently, we determined molecular interactions of TRP120, TRP47, and TRP32 with the eukaryotic host cell. In this investigation, we used yeast two-hybrid analysis to reveal that another E. chaffeensis tandem repeat protein, TRP75, interacts with a diverse group of human proteins associated with organismal and tissue homeostasis, multiple metabolic processes and regulation, response to reactive oxygen species, signal transduction, and protein modifications. Thirteen identified host target proteins associated with actin cytoskeleton reorganization or apoptosis were examined in detail and confirmed to interact with TRP75 at different levels as determined by coimmunoprecipitation assays. These protein interactions were visualized by immunofluorescence confocal microscopy during infection and colocalized with Ehrlichia morulae with different intensities. Moreover, small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) (n = 86) were used to knock down identified TRP75-interacting host proteins separately, and their influence on ehrlichial infection was investigated by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). Knockdown of 74/86 (86%) TRP75 target proteins had a significant negative effect on ehrlichial infection. The results of this study further support the idea of a role of Ehrlichia TRPs as effectors that interact with a complex array of host proteins to promote ehrlichial infection. IMPORTANCE Human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) is caused by an obligatory intracellular bacterium, E. chaffeensis, and is one of the most prevalent, life-threatening emerging infectious zoonoses in the United States. The mechanisms through which E. chaffeensis invades and establishes an intracellular niche are not well understood but are dependent on secreted ehrlichial effector proteins. The significance of this study is in addressing how intracellular pathogens, particularly those with small genomes such as Ehrlichia, exploit a limited number of secreted effector proteins such as tandem repeat proteins (TRPs) to manipulate complex eukaryotes and to regulate host cell processes through molecular pathogen-host interplay. The results of our studies highlight the broader role of ehrlichial TRPs in promoting infection and help define the mechanisms through which obligately intracellular bacteria modulate host cell function for survival.

Online learning is increasingly being used in K-12 learning environments. A concomitant trend is found towards learning becoming authentic as students learn with tasks that are connected to real-world occupations. In this study, 48 pre-service teachers use an online environment to engage in authentic practice as they developed online learning experiences for their future students. Using a design-based research methodology, the researchers were involved in planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating the higher education class across two macro cycles. An authentic learning framework was utilized in the development of the class. Findings explicate the design of the course and how it aligned to the authentic learning framework. It appears that web-based tools were beneficial as the pre-service teachers designed their own K-12 online classes. Findings show that the pre-service teachers' comfort increased when using the using online web building applications in the authentic environment. Furthermore, a high level of engagement in reflective and collaborative learning was uncovered during the activities. This research acts as a springboard for educators who are interested in designing online higher education courses incorporating authentic learning experiences.

Objective To discuss the curative effect and safety of deep brain stimulation (DBS) and neuromodulation in the treatment of patients with torsion dystonia. Methods Ten patients with torsion dystonia underwent subthalamic nucleus DBS (STN-DBS) and 3 patients with torsion dystonia underwent globus pallidus internus DBS (GPi-DBS). Regulate the stimulus parameters, evaluate the improvement of torsion dystonia by using Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale (BFMDRS) and record related adverse events. Results Among the 13 patients, 6 patients were improved by over 60% in 1-3 d and 3 patients one week after stimulation, and the improvement rate was > 75% in 6 months and > 85% in one year. Two patients showed improvement 2 months after stimulation, and the improvement rate was > 60% in 6 months and > 80% in one year. One patient showed slight improvement immediately after operation, and the improvement rate increased to 45% in 6 months and 75% in one year. One patient removed the stimulator. No adverse event related to the operation was found in all 13 patients. The stimulus parameters for STN-DBS were voltage 1.50-2.00 V, frequency 130-145 Hz, pulse width 60-90 μs at 6 months postoperatively, and were voltage 2.00-2.50 V, frequency 130-150 Hz, pulse width 60-90 μs at one year postoperatively. The stimulus parameters for GPi-DBS were voltage 2.50-2.80 V, frequency 130-160 Hz, pulse width 60-90 μs at 6 months postoperatively, and were voltage 2.50-4.00 V, frequency 145-170 Hz, pulse width 60-90 μs at one year postoperatively. Conclusions Both STN-DBS and GPi-DBS have good curative effect and safety in the treatment for torsion dystonia. Besides, patients should be treated with individual neuromodulation. Ehrlichia chaffeensis infects mononuclear phagocytes and survives intracellularly by exploiting host cell processes to evade host defenses. The mechanisms involved are not fully defined, but appear to rely largely on a subset of tandem repeat proteins (TRP) effectors. E. chaffeensis TRPs are type 1 secreted effectors that interact with a functionally diverse group of host cell targets associated with various biological processes. In this study, we investigated the influence of TRP host target proteins on ehrlichial infection by RNA interference. In total, 138 TRP-interacting host proteins identified by yeast two-hybrid were targeted by siRNA and the infection level determined by real-time qPCR. Knockdown of 124 (89%) TRP target proteins had significant influence on infection either by inhibiting (85%) or promoting (15%) ehrlichial infection. Notably, knockdown of 18 host proteins which interacted with TRP120 promoted the infection, suggesting that these targets may be degraded to promote infection. Host proteins that interact with TRPs are involved in cellular processes, including cell signaling, vesicle trafficking and intracellular transport, transcriptional regulation, metabolism, protein posttranslational modification, and apoptosis. Selected host targets were examined by immunofluorescent microscopy during infection and were found to localize with the morulae, or in the host cell cytoplasm adjacent to morulae. This study confirms that the majority of host proteins known to interact with TRP effectors influence infection and further extends the current knowledge that E. chaffeensis TRPs participate in a complex array of host protein interactions in order to reprogram the host cell and promote intracellular survival.

Resistive random access memory (RRAM) devices with Ni/AlOx/Pt-structure were manufactured by deposition of a solution-based aluminum oxide (AlOx) dielectric layer which was subsequently annealed at temperatures from 200 °C to 300 °C, in increments of 25 °C. The devices displayed typical bipolar resistive switching characteristics. Investigations were carried out on the effect of different annealing temperatures for associated RRAM devices to show that performance was correlated with changes of hydroxyl group concentration in the AlOx thin films. The annealing temperature of 250 °C was found to be optimal for the dielectric layer, exhibiting superior performance of the RRAM devices with the lowest operation voltage (104), the narrowest resistance distribution, the longest retention time (>104 s) and the most endurance cycles (>150).

Triggered by the pilot of the "Gao-Kao" reform, the avoidance of physics courses in senior high school has aroused the concern of society in China. The factors that influence the motivation to learn physics are an important research topic, especially for countries that have a disciplinary-based education tradition in secondary school. However, there is a lack of instruments for evaluating secondary school students' physics learning motivation, as most motivational studies consider science learning motivation as a single construct and do not distinguish between the motivation to learn different science disciplines. Therefore, we developed an instrument for measuring physics learning motivation and used this instrument to investigate the trend of physics learning motivation from middle school to high school and how physics learning motivation was influenced by teachers, parents and peers. Adopting achievement goal theory as the theoretical foundation, we developed a survey for physics learning motivation by adapting previously validated instruments. After pilot testing, 502 middle school and senior high school students completed the survey. Statistical tests, such as factor analysis, were conducted to test the reliability and validity of the instrument. Descriptive statistics confirmed some of the findings from past research (such as an overall decline in motivation to learn science), but more detailed analysis also led to new findings. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) we investigated the relationships between students' perceptions of the environment's goal emphases, their personal goal orientations, and their engagement in physics learning in and out of school. The results showed that the students' goal orientations were influenced by teachers and parents, but primarily by their peers. Finally, we discuss possible explanations of the findings and their implications for follow-up studies and policy adjustments.

ABSTRACT Ehrlichia chaffeensis preferentially targets mononuclear phagocytes and survives through a strategy of subverting innate immune defenses, but the mechanisms are unknown. We have shown E. chaffeensis type 1 secreted tandem repeat protein (TRP) effectors are involved in diverse molecular pathogen-host interactions, such as the TRP120 interaction with the Notch receptor-cleaving metalloprotease ADAM17. In the present study, we demonstrate E. chaffeensis, via the TRP120 effector, activates the canonical Notch signaling pathway to promote intracellular survival. We found that nuclear translocation of the transcriptionally active Notch intracellular domain (NICD) occurs in response to E. chaffeensis or recombinant TRP120, resulting in upregulation of Notch signaling pathway components and target genes notch1, adam17, hes, and hey. Significant differences in canonical Notch signaling gene expression levels (>40%) were observed during early and late stages of infection, indicating activation of the Notch pathway. We linked Notch pathway activation specifically to the TRP120 effector, which directly interacts with the Notch metalloprotease ADAM17. Using pharmacological inhibitors and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) against γ-secretase enzyme, Notch transcription factor complex, Notch1, and ADAM17, we demonstrated that Notch signaling is required for ehrlichial survival. We studied the downstream effects and found that E. chaffeensis TRP120-mediated activation of the Notch pathway causes inhibition of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways required for PU.1 and subsequent Toll-like receptor 2/4 (TLR2/4) expression. This investigation reveals a novel mechanism whereby E. chaffeensis exploits the Notch pathway to evade the host innate immune response for intracellular survival. IMPORTANCE E. chaffeensis is an obligately intracellular bacterium and the etiologic agent of human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis (HME), an emerging life-threatening tick-borne zoonosis. Mechanisms by which E. chaffeensis establishes intracellular infection and avoids innate host defenses are not understood, but functionally relevant host-pathogen interactions with type 1 secreted TRP effectors are essential for the ehrlichial cellular reprogramming strategy. This study provides further insight into the molecular strategies used by obligately intracellular pathogens such as E. chaffeensis, which have small genomes and a limited number of effector proteins and exploit evolutionarily conserved host cell programs such as Notch signaling to promote infection and intracellular survival.
