Muons, which play a crucial role in both fundamental and applied physics, have traditionally been generated through proton accelerators or from cosmic rays. With the advent of ultra-short high-intensity lasers capable of accelerating electrons to GeV levels, it has become possible to generate muons in laser laboratories. In this work, we show the first proof of principle experiment for novel muon production with an ultra-short, high-intensity laser device through GeV electron beam bombardment on a lead converter target. The muon physical signal is confirmed by measuring its lifetime which is the first clear demonstration of laser-produced muons. Geant4 simulations were employed to investigate the photo-production, electro-production, and Bethe-Heitler processes response for muon generation and their subsequent detection. The results show that the dominant contributions of muons are attributed to the photo-production/electro-production and a significant yield of muons up to 0.01 $\mu$/$e^-$ out of the converter target could be achieved. This laser muon source features compact, ultra-short pulse and high flux. Moreover, its implementation in a small laser laboratory is relatively straightforward, significantly reducing the barriers to entry for research in areas such as muonic X-ray elemental analysis, muon spin spectroscopy and so on.

Large language models have demonstrated impressive in-context learning (ICL) capability. However, it is still unclear how the underlying transformers accomplish it, especially in more complex scenarios. Toward this goal, several recent works studied how transformers learn fixed-order Markov chains (FOMC) in context, yet natural languages are more suitably modeled by variable-order Markov chains (VOMC), i.e., context trees (CTs). In this work, we study the ICL of VOMC by viewing language modeling as a form of data compression and focus on small alphabets and low-order VOMCs. This perspective allows us to leverage mature compression algorithms, such as context-tree weighting (CTW) and prediction by partial matching (PPM) algorithms as baselines, the former of which is Bayesian optimal for a class of CTW priors. We empirically observe a few phenomena: 1) Transformers can indeed learn to compress VOMC in-context, while PPM suffers significantly; 2) The performance of transformers is not very sensitive to the number of layers, and even a two-layer transformer can learn in-context quite well; and 3) Transformers trained and tested on non-CTW priors can significantly outperform the CTW algorithm. To explain these phenomena, we analyze the attention map of the transformers and extract two mechanisms, on which we provide two transformer constructions: 1) A construction with $D+2$ layers that can mimic the CTW algorithm accurately for CTs of maximum order $D$, 2) A 2-layer transformer that utilizes the feed-forward network for probability blending. One distinction from the FOMC setting is that a counting mechanism appears to play an important role. We implement these synthetic transformer layers and show that such hybrid transformers can match the ICL performance of transformers, and more interestingly, some of them can perform even better despite the much-reduced parameter sets.

We consider coverless steganography where a Large Language Model (LLM) drives an arithmetic coding decoder to generate stego-texts. An efficient method should embed secret message bits in as few language tokens as possible, while still keeping the stego-text natural and fluent. We show that on the individual token level, this problem is mathematically equivalent to maximizing the entropy of a replacement probability distribution of the next token generation, subject to a constraint on the KL divergence between the chosen probability distribution and the original distribution given by the LLM. A closed-form solution is provided for the optimization problem, which can be computed efficiently. Several important practical issues are also tackled: 1) An often-overlooked tokenization mismatch issue is resolved with a simple prompt selection approach, 2) The combination of the optimized distribution and the vocabulary truncation technique is considered, and 3) The combination of the optimized distribution with other sequence-level selection heuristics to further enhance the efficiency and reliability is studied., Comment: 9 figures

In challenging low light and adverse weather conditions,thermal vision algorithms,especially object detection,have exhibited remarkable potential,contrasting with the frequent struggles encountered by visible vision algorithms. Nevertheless,the efficacy of thermal vision algorithms driven by deep learning models remains constrained by the paucity of available training data samples. To this end,this paper introduces a novel approach termed the edge guided conditional diffusion model. This framework aims to produce meticulously aligned pseudo thermal images at the pixel level,leveraging edge information extracted from visible images. By utilizing edges as contextual cues from the visible domain,the diffusion model achieves meticulous control over the delineation of objects within the generated images. To alleviate the impacts of those visible-specific edge information that should not appear in the thermal domain,a two-stage modality adversarial training strategy is proposed to filter them out from the generated images by differentiating the visible and thermal modality. Foundational Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT-3.5-turbo allow users to refine the model based on newer information, known as ``fine-tuning''. This paper leverages this ability to analyze AC-DC converter behaviors, focusing on the ripple current in DC-link capacitors. Capacitors degrade faster under high ripple currents, complicating life monitoring and necessitating preemptive replacements. Using minimal invasive noisy hardware measurements from a full bridge rectifier and 90W Power Factor Correction (PFC) boost converter, an LLM-based models to predict ripple content in DC-link currents was developed which demonstrated the LLMs' ability for near-accurate predictions. This study also highlights data requirements for precise nonlinear power electronic circuit parameter predictions to predict component degradation without any additional sensors. The rate-distortion-perception (RDP) framework has attracted significant recent attention due to its application in neural compression. It is important to understand the underlying mechanism connecting procedures with common randomness and those without. Different from previous efforts, we study this problem from a quantizer design perspective. By analyzing an idealized setting, we provide an interpretation of the advantage of dithered quantization in the RDP setting, which further allows us to make a conceptual connection between randomized (dithered) quantizers and quantizers without common randomness. This survey articles focuses on emerging connections between the fields of machine learning and data compression. While fundamental limits of classical (lossy) data compression are established using rate-distortion theory, the connections to machine learning have resulted in new theoretical analysis and application areas. We survey recent works on task-based and goal-oriented compression, the rate-distortion-perception theory and compression for estimation and inference. Deep learning based approaches also provide natural data-driven algorithmic approaches to compression. We survey recent works on applying deep learning techniques to task-based or goal-oriented compression, as well as image and video compression. We also discuss the potential use of large language models for text compression. Large Language Models (LLMs) as chatbots have drawn remarkable attention thanks to their versatile capability in natural language processing as well as in a wide range of tasks. While there has been great enthusiasm towards adopting such foundational model-based artificial intelligence tools in all sectors possible, the capabilities and limitations of such LLMs in improving the operation of the electric energy sector need to be explored, and this article identifies fruitful directions in this regard. Key future research directions include data collection systems for fine-tuning LLMs, embedding power system-specific tools in the LLMs, and retrieval augmented generation (RAG)-based knowledge pool to improve the quality of LLM responses and LLMs in safety-critical use cases.

We study Markov potential games under the infinite horizon average reward criterion. Most previous studies have been for discounted rewards. We prove that both algorithms based on independent policy gradient and independent natural policy gradient converge globally to a Nash equilibrium for the average reward criterion. To set the stage for gradient-based methods, we first establish that the average reward is a smooth function of policies and provide sensitivity bounds for the differential value functions, under certain conditions on ergodicity and the second largest eigenvalue of the underlying Markov decision process (MDP). We prove that three algorithms, policy gradient, proximal-Q, and natural policy gradient (NPG), converge to an $\epsilon$-Nash equilibrium with time complexity $O(\frac{1}{\epsilon^2})$, given a gradient/differential Q function oracle. When policy gradients have to be estimated, we propose an algorithm with $\tilde{O}(\frac{1}{\min_{s,a}\pi(a|s)\delta})$ sample complexity to achieve $\delta$ approximation error w.r.t~the $\ell_2$ norm. Equipped with the estimator, we derive the first sample complexity analysis for a policy gradient ascent algorithm, featuring a sample complexity of $\tilde{O}(1/\epsilon^5)$. We study the problem of weakly private information retrieval (PIR) when there is heterogeneity in servers' trustfulness under the maximal leakage (Max-L) metric and mutual information (MI) metric. A user wishes to retrieve a desired message from N non-colluding servers efficiently, such that the identity of the desired message is not leaked in a significant manner; however, some servers can be more trustworthy than others. We propose a code construction for this setting and optimize the probability distribution for this construction. For the Max-L metric, it is shown that the optimal probability allocation for the proposed scheme essentially separates the delivery patterns into two parts: a completely private part that has the same download overhead as the capacity-achieving PIR code, and a non-private part that allows complete privacy leakage but has no download overhead by downloading only from the most trustful server. The optimal solution is established through a sophisticated analysis of the underlying convex optimization problem, and a reduction between the homogeneous setting and the heterogeneous setting. For the MI metric, the homogeneous case is studied first for which the code can be optimized with an explicit probability assignment, while a closed-form solution becomes intractable for the heterogeneous case. We study a federated linear bandits model, where $M$ clients communicate with a central server to solve a linear contextual bandits problem with finite adversarial action sets that may be different across clients. To address the unique challenges of adversarial finite action sets, we propose the FedSupLinUCB algorithm, which extends the principles of SupLinUCB and OFUL algorithms in linear contextual bandits. We prove that FedSupLinUCB achieves a total regret of $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{d T})$, where $T$ is the total number of arm pulls from all clients, and $d$ is the ambient dimension of the linear model. This matches the minimax lower bound and thus is order-optimal (up to polylog terms). We study both asynchronous and synchronous cases and show that the communication cost can be controlled as $O(d M^2 \log(d)\log(T))$ and $O(\sqrt{d^3 M^3} \log(d))$, respectively. The FedSupLinUCB design is further extended to two scenarios: (1) variance-adaptive, where a total regret of $\tilde{O} (\sqrt{d \sum \nolimits_{t=1}^{T} \sigma_t^2})$ can be achieved with $\sigma_t^2$ being the noise variance of round $t$; and (2) adversarial corruption, where a total regret of $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{dT} + d C_p)$ can be achieved with $C_p$ being the total corruption budget. RGB-Thermal (RGB-T) pedestrian detection aims to locate the pedestrians in RGB-T image pairs to exploit the complementation between the two modalities for improving detection robustness in extreme conditions. Most existing algorithms assume that the RGB-T image pairs are well registered, while in the real world they are not aligned ideally due to parallax or different field-of-view of the cameras. The pedestrians in misaligned image pairs may locate at different positions in two images, which results in two challenges: 1) how to achieve inter-modality complementation using spatially misaligned RGB-T pedestrian patches, and 2) how to recognize the unpaired pedestrians at the boundary. To deal with these issues, we propose a new paradigm for unregistered RGB-T pedestrian detection, which predicts two separate pedestrian locations in the RGB and thermal images, respectively. Specifically, we propose a cross-modality proposal-guided feature mining (CPFM) mechanism to extract the two precise fusion features for representing the pedestrian in the two modalities, even if the RGB-T image pair is unaligned. It enables us to effectively exploit the complementation between the two modalities. With the CPFM mechanism, we build a two-stream dense detector; it predicts the two pedestrian locations in the two modalities based on the corresponding fusion feature mined by the CPFM mechanism. Besides, we design a data augmentation method, named Homography, to simulate the discrepancy in scales and views between images. We also investigate two non-maximum suppression (NMS) methods for post-processing. Favorable experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our method in dealing with unregistered pedestrians with different shifts.

We study robust reinforcement learning (RL) with the goal of determining a well-performing policy that is robust against model mismatch between the training simulator and the testing environment. Previous policy-based robust RL algorithms mainly focus on the tabular setting under uncertainty sets that facilitate robust policy evaluation, but are no longer tractable when the number of states scales up. To this end, we propose two novel uncertainty set formulations, one based on double sampling and the other on an integral probability metric. Both make large-scale robust RL tractable even when one only has access to a simulator. We propose a robust natural actor-critic (RNAC) approach that incorporates the new uncertainty sets and employs function approximation. We provide finite-time convergence guarantees for the proposed RNAC algorithm to the optimal robust policy within the function approximation error. Finally, we demonstrate the robust performance of the policy learned by our proposed RNAC approach in multiple MuJoCo environments and a real-world TurtleBot navigation task., Comment: Neurips 2023

We provide a new information-theoretic generalization error bound that is exactly tight (i.e., matching even the constant) for the canonical quadratic Gaussian (location) problem. Most existing bounds are order-wise loose in this setting, which has raised concerns about the fundamental capability of information-theoretic bounds in reasoning the generalization behavior for machine learning. The proposed new bound adopts the individual-sample-based approach proposed by Bu et al., but also has several key new ingredients. Firstly, instead of applying the change of measure inequality on the loss function, we apply it to the generalization error function itself; secondly, the bound is derived in a conditional manner; lastly, a reference distribution is introduced. The combination of these components produces a KL-divergence-based generalization error bound. We show that although the latter two new ingredients can help make the bound exactly tight, removing them does not significantly degrade the bound, leading to an asymptotically tight mutual-information-based bound. We further consider the vector Gaussian setting, where a direct application of the proposed bound again does not lead to tight bounds except in special cases. A refined bound is then proposed for decomposable loss functions, leading to a tight bound for the vector setting.

Real-world graphs are constantly evolving, which demands updates of the previous analysis results to accommodate graph changes. By using the memoized previous computation state, incremental graph computation can reduce unnecessary recomputation. However, a small change may propagate over the whole graph and lead to large-scale iterative computations. To address this problem, we propose Layph, a two-layered graph framework. The upper layer is a skeleton of the graph, which is much smaller than the original graph, and the lower layer has some disjointed subgraphs. Layph limits costly global iterative computations on the original graph to the small graph skeleton and a few subgraphs updated with the input graph changes. In this way, many vertices and edges are not involved in iterative computations, significantly reducing the communication overhead and improving incremental graph processing performance. Proof-of-work computation used in cryptocurrencies has witnessed significant growth in the U.S. and many other regions around the world. One of the most significant bottlenecks for the scalable deployment of such computation is its energy demand. On the other hand, the electric energy system is increasing the need for flexibility for energy balancing and ancillary services due to the intermittent nature of many new energy resources such as wind and solar. In this work, we model the operation of a cryptomining facility with heterogeneous mining devices participating in ancillary services. We propose a general formulation for the cryptominers to maximize their profit by strategically participating in ancillary services and controlling the loss of mining revenue, which requires taking into account the disparity in the efficiency of the mining machines. The optimization formulation is considered for both offline and online scenarios, and optimal algorithms are proposed to solve these problems. As a special case of our problem, we investigate cryptominers' participation in frequency regulation, where the miners benefit from their fast-responding devices and contribute to grid stability. In the second special setting, a risk-aware algorithm is proposed to jointly minimize the cost and the risk of participating in ancillary services with homogeneous mining devices. Simulation results based on real-world Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) traces show more than 20\% gain in profit, highlighting the advantage of our proposed algorithms.

We consider the storage-retrieval rate tradeoff in private information retrieval (PIR) systems using a Shannon-theoretic approach. Our focus is mostly on the canonical two-message two-database case, for which a coding scheme based on random codebook generation and the binning technique is proposed. This coding scheme reveals a hidden connection between PIR and the classic multiple description source coding problem. We first show that when the retrieval rate is kept optimal, the proposed non-linear scheme can achieve better performance over any linear scheme. Moreover, a non-trivial storage-retrieval rate tradeoff can be achieved beyond space-sharing between this extreme point and the other optimal extreme point, achieved by the retrieve-everything strategy. We further show that with a method akin to the expurgation technique, one can extract a zero-error PIR code from the random code. We study policy optimization for Markov decision processes (MDPs) with multiple reward value functions, which are to be jointly optimized according to given criteria such as proportional fairness (smooth concave scalarization), hard constraints (constrained MDP), and max-min trade-off. We propose an Anchor-changing Regularized Natural Policy Gradient (ARNPG) framework, which can systematically incorporate ideas from well-performing first-order methods into the design of policy optimization algorithms for multi-objective MDP problems. Theoretically, the designed algorithms based on the ARNPG framework achieve $\tilde{O}(1/T)$ global convergence with exact gradients. The study of the fundamental limits of information systems is a central theme in information theory. Both the traditional analytical approach and the recently proposed computational approach have significant limitations, where the former is mainly due to its reliance on human ingenuity, and the latter due to its exponential memory and computational complexity. In this work, we propose a new computational approach to tackle the problem with much lower memory and computational requirements, which can naturally utilize certain intuitions, but also can maintain the strong computational advantage of the existing computational approach. A reformulation of the underlying optimization problem is first proposed, which converts the large linear program to a maximin problem. This leads to an iterative solving procedure, which uses the LP dual to carry over learned evidence between iterations. The key in the reformulated problem is the selection of good information inequalities, with which a relaxed LP can be formed. A particularly powerful intuition is a potentially optimal code construction, and we provide a method that directly utilizes it in the new algorithm. As an application, we derive a tighter outer bound for the storage-repair tradeoff for the $(6,5,5)$ regenerating code problem, which involves at least 30 random variables and is impossible to compute with the previously known computational approach., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted ISIT 2022

We study the problem of weakly private information retrieval (W-PIR), where a user wishes to retrieve a desired message from $N$ non-colluding servers in a way that the privacy leakage regarding the desired message's identity is less than or equal to a threshold. We propose a new code construction which significantly improves upon the best known result in the literature, based on the following critical observation. In previous constructions, for the extreme case of minimum download, the retrieval pattern is to download the message directly from $N-1$ servers; however this causes leakage to all these $N-1$ servers, and a better retrieval pattern for this extreme case is to download the message directly from a single server. The proposed code construction allows a natural transition to such a pattern, and for both the maximal leakage metric and the mutual information leakage metric, significant improvements can be obtained. We analyze the performance of the Borda counting algorithm in a non-parametric model. The algorithm needs to utilize probabilistic rankings of the items within $m$-sized subsets to accurately determine which items are the overall top-$k$ items in a total of $n$ items. The Borda counting algorithm simply counts the cumulative scores for each item from these partial ranking observations. This generalizes a previous work of a similar nature by Shah et al. using probabilistic pairwise comparison data. The performance of the Borda counting algorithm critically depends on the associated score separation $\Delta_k$ between the $k$-th item and the $(k+1)$-th item. Specifically, we show that if $\Delta_k$ is greater than certain value, then the top-$k$ items selected by the algorithm is asymptotically accurate almost surely; if $\Delta_k$ is below certain value, then the result will be inaccurate with a constant probability. In the special case of $m=2$, i.e., pairwise comparison, the resultant bound is tighter than that given by Shah et al., leading to a reduced gap between the error probability upper and lower bounds. These results are further extended to the approximate top-$k$ selection setting. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the Borda counting algorithm, compared with the spectral MLE-based algorithm, particularly when the data does not necessarily follow an assumed parametric model.

We study the effect of reward variance heterogeneity in the approximate top-$m$ arm identification setting. In this setting, the reward for the $i$-th arm follows a $\sigma^2_i$-sub-Gaussian distribution, and the agent needs to incorporate this knowledge to minimize the expected number of arm pulls to identify $m$ arms with the largest means within error $\epsilon$ out of the $n$ arms, with probability at least $1-\delta$.
