Xinjiang cotton is characterized by high-density planting, which easily leads to competition between the source and sink, the shading of leaves and reproductive organs, and yield reduction. Balancing the relationship between source and sink can promote high and stable cotton yield. In this study, field experiments were conducted by combining the exogenous application of brassinosteroid with a reduction in leaf source to study their effects on the physiological and yield attributes of cotton. The results indicate that brassinosteroid application increased the yield, with a maximum yield increase of 6.3%. The number of bolls per plant increased by 1.3 nos. The photosynthetic rate and dry matter accumulation were enhanced, and the proportion of reproductive organs in the dry matter increased by >4%. Under the reduced leaf source, brassinosteroid application increased the number of new leaves by 20%, delayed the shedding of reproductive organs by 5–10 days, and reduced the average shedding rate by 8.9%. Additionally, the number of bolls increased in the middle and upper parts and at the edge of the plant. The number of bolls increased by 19.4% on the 4th–8th fruiting branches and 60.7% at the edge. Under leaf reduction treatment, brassinosteroid application could generally increase yield. After brassinosteroid application and removing half the leaves of fruiting branches and all leaves of the vegetive branches, the yield was higher than that of the control. Thus, brassinosteroid application could improve the efficiency of the leaf source and promote dry matter accumulation in sinks. Moreover, it could optimize boll distribution and increase yield by reducing reproductive organ shedding. Under the high-density planting of cotton in Xinjiang, leaf source is a slight surplus, and a moderate reduction in plant density is conducive to increasing yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-density planting is an effective technique to optimize yields of mulched cotton. On the other hand, deficit irrigation is an emerging water-saving strategy in cotton cultivation, especially suitable for arid and water-scarce areas. However, the relationships between deficit irrigation, high-density planting, and regulation mechanisms of canopy light radiation and light use efficiency (LUE) in cotton is not yet clear. To clarify the mechanism of light interception (LI) and the LUE of cotton canopies, three irrigation treatments [315 (50% Fc), 405 (75% Fc, farmers' irrigation practice), and 495 mm (100% Fc), where Fc was the field capacity] with three plant densities [13.5, 18.0 (farmers' planting practice), and 22.5 plants m2] were applied. The findings of this research revealed that, under deficit irrigation, the above-ground dry matter (ADM) was reduced by 5.05% compared to the farmers' irrigation practice. Over both years and across all plant densities, LI and LUE under deficit irrigation decreased by 8.36% and 4.79%, respectively, relative to the farmers' irrigation practices. In contrast, LI and LUE for the highest irrigation level increased by 10.59% and 5.23%, respectively. In the case of the interaction (plant density and irrigation level), the ADM under deficit irrigation and high-density combination increased by 7.69% compared to the control (farmers' irrigation × sowing practices interaction effects). The LI and LUE also exhibited an increase in 1.63% and 6.34%, respectively. Notably, the LI effect of the middle and upper cotton canopy under film drip irrigation reached 70%. A lower irrigation level resulted in a higher percentage of LI in the lower canopy region. The leaf area index, light interception rate, and extinction coefficient escalated with the increase in plant density. Under deficit irrigation treatment, the LI of the 0–30 cm canopy in high plant density settings increased by 8.6% compared to the control (farmers' irrigation × sowing practices interaction effects). In conclusion, deficit irrigation and increased plant density improved the interception of LI and LUE of cotton canopy. Lateral roots and root hairs are essential portions of cotton roots. However, the morphology and lifespan of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) lateral roots and root hairs in response to nitrogen stress have remained unknown. Two cotton cultivars were assessed when no nitrogen and normal nitrogen (138 mg N·kg−1 soil) were added. The daily acquisitions of root phenotype information including the lateral root angle, lateral root density, lateral root diameter, lateral root lifespan, root hair length, root hair density, and root hair lifespan, were obtained in situ by a self‐designed platform of RhizoPots equipped with high‐resolution scanners. Nitrogen starvation significantly reduced the growth of shoots and roots, although there was less reduction of roots than shoots. Root hairs were the first organ to respond to nitrogen deficiency through morphological changes. The lateral root diameter and angle as well as the root hair lifespan decreased significantly under nitrogen stress. However, nitrogen deficiency dramatically increased the lateral root lifespan, root hair density and length. Our results demonstrate that low nitrogen can induce notable changes in lateral roots and root hairs, which may play a crucial role in the adjustment to nitrogen uptake, particularly in species that can adapt to low nitrogen availability. Through on-the-spot investigation and survey in Xinjiang cotton region and relevant data (containing statistical data, online information and government documents, etc.), the characteristics of water resource, wind-sand disaster, soil salinization, cotton diseases, insect pests and weeds in Xinjiang are studied. It is proposed reasons and specific programmes of green development strategy of Xinjiang cotton, and specific strategies contain ecological water supply, land desertification control, soil improvement, and ecological control of diseases, insect pests and weeds, thereby providing the support for sustainable development of Xinjiang cotton. Background: Myocardial microcirculation dysfunction is the most potent predictor of adverse cardiovascular events in hypertension. The current study aimed to apply intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging (IVIM-DWI) to assess hypertension-related microcirculation dysfunction., Methods: In this prospective study, 102 participants were recruited from our hospital and underwent cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) examination on a 3T scanning system. Hypertensive patients were divided into 3 subgroups based on blood pressure (BP) types. Two experienced CMR radiologists independently analyzed all images, and Bland-Altman analysis was applied to assess intra- and inter-observer reproducibility. Cardiac function indexes and IVIM-DWI parameters were compared between the hypertension and healthy control groups, as well as among the three hypertension subgroups., Results: Totally 62 participants with hypertension and 27 healthy controls were included. 13 participants were excluded for poor quality of IVIM-DWI images. Significantly higher maximal left ventricular wall thickness (10.3±2.0 vs. 8.6±1.4 mm, P<0.001) and left ventricular mass index (49.0±9.1 vs. 42.1±7.5 g/m 2 , P<0.05) were observed inhypertension group compared with healthy control group. There were significant statistical differences in pseudo diffusion (D*) between them (81.3±16.3 vs. 111.8±18.9 mm 2 /s, P<0.001), as well as among the three hypertension subgroups (99.4±13.9 vs. 79.7±10.6 vs. 67.1±6.6 mm 2 /s, P<0.001). Participants with poor quality of IVIM-DWI images had higher heart rates (72.2±10.0 vs. 62.0±8.1 bpm, P<0.001)., Conclusions: IVIM-DWI is feasible for quantitatively evaluating myocardial microcirculation dysfunction in hypertension. Potassium plays a significant role in the basic functions of plant growth and development. Potassium uptake is closely associated with morphological characteristics of the roots. However, the dynamic characteristics of phenotype and lifespan of cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) lateral roots and root hairs under low and high potassium stress remain unclear. In this study, potassium stress experiments (low and high potassium, medium potassium as control) were conducted using RhizoPot (an in situ root observation device) to determine the response characteristics of lateral roots and root hairs in cotton under potassium stress. The plant morphology, photosynthetic characteristics, root phenotypic changes, and lifespan of lateral roots and root hairs were measured. Potassium accumulation, aboveground phenotype, photosynthetic capacity, root length density, root dry weight, root diameter, lateral root lifespan, and root hair lifespan under low potassium stress were significantly decreased compared to medium potassium treatment. However, the root hair length of the former was significantly increased than that of the latter. Potassium accumulation and the lateral root lifespan were significantly increased under high potassium treatment, while root length density, root dry weight, root diameter, root hair length, and root hair lifespan were significantly decreased compared to the medium potassium treatment. Notably, there were no significant differences in aboveground morphology and photosynthetic characters. Principal component analysis revealed that lateral root lifespan, root hair lifespan of the first lateral root, and root hair length significantly correlated with potassium accumulation. The root had similar regularity responses to low and high potassium stress except for lifespan and root hair length.
