Abstract Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly aggressive and deadly brain cancer. Temozolomide (TMZ) is the standard chemotherapeutic agent for GBM, but the majority of patients experience recurrence and invasion of tumor cells. We investigated whether TMZ treatment of GBM cells regulates matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which have the main function to promote tumor cell invasion. TMZ effectively killed GL261, U343, and U87MG cells at a concentration of 500 µM, and surviving cells upregulated MMP9 expression and its activity but not those of MMP2. TMZ also elevated levels of MMP9 mRNA and MMP9 promoter activity. Subcutaneous graft tumors survived from TMZ treatment also exhibited increased expression of MMP9 and enhanced gelatinolytic activity. TMZ-mediated MMP9 upregulation was specifically mediated through the phosphorylation of p38 and JNK. This then stimulates AP-1 activity through the upregulation of c-Fos and c-Jun. Inhibition of the p38, JNK, or both pathways counteracted the TMZ-induced upregulation of MMP9 and AP-1. This study proposes a potential adverse effect of TMZ treatment for GBM: upregulation of MMP9 expression potentially associated with increased invasion and poor prognosis. This study also provides valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms by which TMZ treatment leads to increased MMP9 expression in GBM cells.

Purpose – This study aims to empirically investigate how difference in social trust explains the heterogeneity of intellectual property right (IPR) protection (proxied by software piracy rate) across countries. Specifically, the authors also examine whether this effect is complementary or substitute to legal and economic factors. Design/methodology/approach – The authors use both ordinary least square and two-stage least square regressions to investigate this effect. Findings – The authors find that there is also a complementary effect between trust and rule of law in reducing the violation of IPRs. Originality/value – Although the literature by now has documented the solid relationship between trust and the quality of formal institutions, only few studies have explored more specific measures of institutional consequences. Thus, this study is the first study investigating the role of trust, a valuable social capital dimension, on IPR protection.

Having foreign directors on board has both positive and negative sides while the overall effect of the foreign directors on firm performance is still inconclusive in literature. In this paper, we examine the relation between foreign directors and firm performance measured by return on assets in Vietnam. Using a sample of 175 firms with 955 observations from 2013 to 2019, we find that having foreign directors on board who have better expertise, experience, and networks is positively related to firm performance. However, employing additional foreign directors generally does not bring more benefits due to more misunderstandings and slower decision making, except when all foreign directors are from similar economic development backgrounds. The results contribute to inconclusive literature by adding more understandings of the context in which the foreign directors have an positive impact positively on firm performance. The findings also have practical implications for recruiting foreign directors in Vietnamese firms.

Ganoderma sinense , a well-known medicinal macrofungus of Basidiomycetes, is widely used in traditional medicine for promoting health and longevity in East Asia. The fruiting bodies of G. sinense contain polysaccharides, ergosterol, and coumarin, which have antitumor, antioxidant, and anticytopenia activities. Mushroom cultivation requires suitable conditions for the formation of fruiting bodies and yield. However, little is known about the optimal culture conditions for mycelial growth and cultivation of G. sinense . In this study, the successful cultivation of a G. sinense strain collected from the wild was reported. The optimal culture conditions were identified by examining one factor at a time. The results of this study revealed that the nutritional requirements for the optimal mycelial growth of G. sinense were fructose (15 g/l) as the carbon source and yeast extract (1 g/l) as the nitrogen source. The optimal pH and temperature for G. sinense were 7 and 25–30̊C, respectively. The mycelia grew fastest in treatment II (69% rice grains + 30% sawdust + 1% calcium carbonate). G. sinense produced fruiting bodies under all tested conditions and showed the highest biological efficiency (2.95%) in treatment B (96% sawdust, 1% wheat bran, 1% lime). In summary, under optimal culture conditions, G. sinense strain GA21 showed satisfactory yield and a high potential for commercial cultivation.

Aims To determine the effectiveness of a mobile application (app) in improving the quality of bowel preparation for colonoscopy.Method An endoscopist-blinded randomised controlled trial enrolled patients who were undergoing a colonoscopy on the same day of bowel preparation. The intervention used a Vietnamese mobile app that provides instructions on bowel preparation while patients in the comparison group received conventional instructions. Outcomes included the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS) to assess the quality of bowel preparation and the polyp detection rate (PDR) and adenoma detection rate (ADR).Results The study recruited 515 patients (256 in the intervention group). The median age was 42 years, 50.9% were females, 69.1% high school graduates and higher, and 45.2% from urban area. Patients in the intervention group had higher adherence to instructions (60.9% vs 52.4%, p=0.05) and longer length of taking laxatives (mean difference 0.17 hours, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.27). SCCmec is a large mobile genetic element that confers resistance to β-lactam antibiotics in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Here, the authors show that biofilm growth conditions enhance the efficiency of natural transformation in S. aureus and allow the transfer of SCCmec to methicillin-sensitive strains.

Abstract Even though fermented soybean (FS) contains various antioxidant compounds, this long‐time processing still faces various oxidations caused by enzymes or heat. To elucidate the possibility of the oxidations as well as the level of enhancement of antioxidant properties to limit such oxidation, ergothioneine (ESH) concentrated extract (CE) from Aspergillus oryzae was used to interfere during FS processing. So, the supplementation of ESH CE (0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%) to one of three main stages such as soaking stage (SK), steaming (SM), or fermentation (FM) of the processing before measuring the quality changes of the final fermented product was done. The result showed that when added 4%–6% of ESH CE to the SK, ESH was slightly increased while 2,2‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities and total phenolic compounds (TPC) increased considerably after fermentation by Bacillus subtilis. Total lipid was also slightly increased, whereas free fatty acid (FFA), peroxide value (PV), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) decreased sharply compared with the control sample. Although supplemented at SK, L*‐value increased sharply from 0% to 4% and then decreased slightly at 6% of ESH CE, higher than at SM, and subsequent FM, ∆E‐value and a* and b* value changed in the opposite direction when these parameters decreased the sharpest at SK, lower than at SM and then at FM. The results indicate that supplementing with 4%–6% ESH CE at the early SK of FS processing shows a compatible difference with other stages, not only helping to prevent lipid oxidation but also improving the bright color of the final FS.

Pulmonary angiosarcoma is a rare clinical entity with a poor prognosis and no established therapeutic strategies. We present the first case to our knowledge of metastatic pulmonary angiosarcoma, treated with checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy, and have an excellent response. Until now, patient has been treated with immunotherapy for 1 year, and his disease is stable and well-tolerated.

Protozoal infections are a world-wide problem. The toxicity and somewhat low effectiveness of the existing drugs require the search for new ways of protozoa suppression. Snake venom contains structurally diverse components manifesting antiprotozoal activity; for example, those in cobra venom are cytotoxins. In this work, we aimed to characterize a novel antiprotozoal component(s) in the Bungarus multicinctus krait venom using the ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis as a model organism. To determine the toxicity of the substances under study, surviving ciliates were registered automatically by an original BioLaT-3.2 instrument. The krait venom was separated by three-step liquid chromatography and the toxicity of the obtained fractions against T. pyriformis was analyzed. As a result, 21 kDa protein toxic to Tetrahymena was isolated and its amino acid sequence was determined by MALDI TOF MS and high-resolution mass spectrometry. It was found that antiprotozoal activity was manifested by β-bungarotoxin (β-Bgt) differing from the known toxins by two amino acid residues. Inactivation of β-Bgt phospholipolytic activity with p-bromophenacyl bromide did not change its antiprotozoal activity. Thus, this is the first demonstration of the antiprotozoal activity of β-Bgt, which is shown to be independent of its phospholipolytic activity.

Land scarcity has frequently been cited as the primary barrier preventing rural households from pursuing better livelihoods in Vietnam and other developing societies. In this paper, we investigate the role of landlessness and landholdings in the choice of livelihoods and in household income in the Red River Delta, the most densely populated region in Vietnam. Using data from the 2018 Vietnam Household Living Standard Survey, our cluster analysis classifies five livelihoods pursued by local households, namely informal wage-earning jobs, formal wage-earning jobs, nonfarm self-employment, agriculture, and non-labor livelihoods. Non-laboring, agricultural, or informal wage-earning households earn less per capita income on average than formal wage-earning or nonfarm self-employment households, according to both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. Our regression analysis demonstrates that land scarcity is not a significant obstacle preventing rural people from seeking gainful livelihoods in the region. The finding suggests that improving education and supporting non-farm activities should be high-priority government policies for local households with limited land and education. Such policies are expected to help them not only transform their livelihoods but also improve their economic well-being.

Objectives: Linezolid is one of the last resort antibiotics effectively used in the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria. Recent outbreaks of Linezolid resistance have been the great concern worldwide, while many countries have not experienced it. In this work, we aimed to evaluate the existence of linezolid resistance and further clarify potential resistance mechanism(s) in staphylococcal isolates obtained from the hospital in Vietnam, a country in which linezolid resistance had not been previously detected. Methods: Seventy staphylococcal clinical isolates including MRSA (n = 63) and methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCNS, n = 7) were collected and analyzed for linezolid resistance. Linezolid-resistant isolates were submitted for whole genome sequencing to search for the resistance determinants. Results: We identified two coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates that were resistant to linezolid. Whole genome sequencing revealed several alterations in the 23S rRNA and L3, L17, L22, L24, L30 ribosomal proteins. Importantly, both isolates harbour the chloramphenicol/florfenicol resistance (cfr) gene on a plasmid. The plasmid was closely identical to the pLRSA417 plasmid that was originally reported in China. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of cfr-mediated linezolid resistance in clinically isolated staphylococci in Vietnam. We suggest that adequate surveillance is necessary to monitor the dissemination of linezolid resistance among staphylococcal species and other important pathogens.

Cordyceps militaris, a precious medical mushroom, has attracted wide attention in industrial fields. Currently, the degeneration phenomenon of C. militaris commercial strains is amongst the major challenges for cultivation at the industrial scale. The screening for superior strains with high yield and medicinal value is considered a realistic approach to overcome degeneration problems. In the present study, the mycelial growth, primordia formation, yield performance, and cordycepin content of five strains (DT1, DT2, DT3, DT4, and DT5) under artificial cultivation conditions were investigated. All strains showed mycelial growth on SDAY and liquid medium. The strains were successfully cultivated in brown rice medium and required 18 (strain DT3) to 25 days (strain DT5) to form primordia. Additionally, morphological characteristics of fruiting bodies varied among the strains. Strains DT4 and DT3 exhibited the highest fruiting body length with 74.23 ± 5.13 mm and 72.63 ± 2.62 mm, respectively whereas the highest diameter was recorded for strains DT1 (4.05 ± 0.18 mm) and DT2 (3.63 ± 0.12 mm). Of note, among the investigated strains, strain DT3 exhibited the highest biological efficiency (8.95 ± 0.07%) and cordycepin content (1.68 mg/g). Therefore, strain DT3 could be selected as a potential strain for commercial cultivation.

Heavy metal contamination in agricultural land is an alarming issue in Vietnam. It is necessary to develop suitable remediation methods for environmental and farming purposes. The present study investigated the effectiveness of using peanut shell-derived biochar to remediate the two heavy metals Zn and Pb in laboratory soil assays following Tessier’s sequential extraction procedure. The concentration of heavy metals was analyzed using Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This study also compared the effectiveness of the blend of biochar and apatite applied and the mere biochar amendment on the chemical fractions of Pb and Zn in the contaminated agricultural soil. Results have shown that the investigated soil was extremely polluted by Pb (3047.8 mg kg−1) and Zn (2034.3 mg kg−1). In addition, the pH, organic carbon, and electrical conductivity values of amended soil samples increased with the increase in the amendment’s ratios. The distribution of heavy metals in soil samples was in the descending order of carbonate fraction (F2) > residue fraction (F5) > exchangeable fraction (F1) > Fe/Mn oxide fraction (F3) > organic fraction (F4) for Pb and F5 ≈ F2 > F1 > F3 > F4 for Zn. The peanut shell-derived biochar produced at 400 °C and 600 °C amended at a 10% ratio (PB4:10 and PB6:10) could significantly reduce the exchangeable fraction Zn from 424.82 mg kg−1 to 277.69 mg kg−1 and 302.89 mg kg−1, respectively, and Pb from 495.77 mg kg−1 to 234.55 mg kg−1 and 275.15 mg kg−1, respectively, and immobilize them in soil. Amending the biochar and apatite combination increased the soil pH, then produced a highly negative charge on the soil surface and facilitated Pb and Zn adsorption. This study shows that the amendment of biochar and biochar blended with apatite could stabilize Pb and Zn fractions, indicating the potential of these amendments to remediate Pb and Zn in contaminated soil.

Abstract Background There is a paucity of data regarding risk factors associated with suboptimal breastfeeding practices in urbanized areas of low-middle income countries (LMICs). Methods Through a large prospective birth cohort, which enrolled 6706 infants in Vietnam between 2009 and 2013, we investigated the practice of exclusive breastfeeding during hospital stay in urban and semi-rural populations and aimed to identify factors associated with suboptimal breastfeeding practices. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression were performed to determine factors associated with not exclusive breastfeeding during hospital stay. Results Of 6076 mothers, 33% (2187) breastfed their infant exclusively before hospital discharge; 9% (364/4248) in urban and 74% (1823/2458) in semi-rural areas. Salinity is crucial in fish larval rearing. In longfin batfish (Platax teira), little research has been conducted regarding the specific effects of salinity on growth, survival, deformity, and food utilization efficiency. This study aimed to determine the optimal salinity level for larval rearing of the longfin batfish by testing five different salinity levels (10, 15, 20, 25, and 30°). Larvae of 1.5 cm in length and 0.2 g/fish in weight were stocked in cylindrical fiberglass tanks (300 L) at a density of 1 fish/L. The fish were fed to meet their dietary requirement and divided into four daily feedings. Each treatment was replicated three times over a 28-day period of rearing. The results revealed that salinity significantly influenced the growth (length, weight, biomass), and food utilization efficiency of the longfin batfish larvae. Overall, larvae reared at salinity levels of 15-20° exhibited superior performance compared to those exposed to salinity levels of 10, 25, and 30°. However, salinity did not affect the coefficient of variation, survival, and deformity. From these findings, it is recommended to rear longfin batfish larvae at a salinity of 15-20° to achieve optimal growth and food utilization efficiency. The international community and governmental organizations are actively calling for the implementation of One Health (OH) surveillance systems to target health hazards that involve humans, animals, and their environment. In our view, the main characteristic of a OH surveillance system is the collaboration across institutions and disciplines operating within the different sectors to plan, coordinate, and implement the surveillance process. However, the multisectoral organizational models and possible collaborative modalities implemented throughout the surveillance process are multi-fold and depend on the objective and context of the surveillance. The purpose of this study is to define a matrix to evaluate the quality and appropriateness of multisectoral collaboration through an in-depth analysis of its organization, implementation, and functions. We developed a first list of evaluation attributes based on (i) the characteristics of the organization, implementation, and functionality of multisectoral surveillance systems; and (ii) the existing attributes for the evaluation of health surveillance systems and OH initiatives. These attributes were submitted to two rounds of expert-opinion elicitation for review and validation. The final list of attributes consisted of 23 organizational attributes and 9 functional attributes, to which 3 organizational indexes were added measuring the overall organization of collaboration. We then defined 75 criteria to evaluate the level of satisfaction for the attributes and indexes. The criteria were scored following a four-tiered scoring grid. Graphical representations allowed for an easy overview of the evaluation results for both attributes and indexes. This evaluation matrix is the first to allow an in-depth analysis of collaboration in a multisectoral surveillance system and is the preliminary step toward the creation of a fully standalone tool for the evaluation of collaboration. After its practical application and adaptability to different contexts are field-tested, this tool could be very useful in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of collaboration occurring in a multisectoral surveillance system.

The objective in this study is to investigate optimal culture conditions for mycelial growth and fruiting body formation of the Ling Zhi mushroom, Ganoderma lucidum strain GA3. The results of the study show that the optimal media and temperature for the mycelial growth are potato, glucose, and agar (PGA) supplemented with rice bran, and 25-30oC, respectively. Strain GA3 is able to grow in a wide pH range, between 4 and 12. The most favourable substrate mixture for the formation and development of the fruiting body is 87% sawdust + 4% corn powder + 8% rice bran + 1% calcium carbonate (CaCO3).

CD46 is a membrane-bound complement regulatory protein (mCRP) possessing a regulatory role with the complement system. CD46 protects the host cells from damage by complement. Expression of CD46 is also highly maintained in many cancers, including bladder cancers, and thus functions as a receptor for many cancer therapeutic viruses. In this study we report a unique role of CD46 as a progression factor of cancer cells in bladder cancers. Resulting data from a DNA microarray using CD46-altered HT1376 bladder cancers demonstrated a pool of target genes, including complement C3α chain (C3α), matrix Gla protein (MGP), AFAP-AS1, follicular dendritic cell secreted protein (FDCSP), MAM domain containing 2 (MAMDC2), gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor pi (GABRP), transforming growth factor, beta-induced (TGFBI), a family of cytochrome P450 (CYP24A1), sialic acid binding Ig-like lectin 6 (SIGLEC6), metallothionein 1E (MT1E), and several members of cytokeratins. Subsequent studies using quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot analyses confirmed CD46-mediated regulation of C3α, MGP, and keratin 13 (KRT13). MGP and KRT13 are known to be involved in cell migration and cancer cell metastasis. A cell migration assay demonstrated that CD46 enhanced migratory potential of bladder cancer cells. Taken all together, this report demonstrated that CD46 is generally overexpressed in bladder cancers and plays a unique role in the promotion of cancer cell migration. Further detailed studies are needed to be performed to clarify the action mechanism of CD46 and its application to cancer therapeutics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
