O objetivo deste artigo foi descrever as características clínicas e demográficas de pessoas com deficiência atendidas em uma clínica-escola de Odontologia do Nordeste brasileiro, relacionando estes perfis às necessidades acumuladas e aos tratamentos realizados no período de março a julho de 2019. Tratou-se de um estudo de análise de banco de dados no qual foram avaliados os prontuários em relação a sexo, idade, diagnóstico médico, uso de medicamentos, motivo da consulta e tratamentos realizados. Foi utilizada uma amostra de conveniência de 55 prontuários, referentes aos indivíduos em atendimento neste período. Os testes Qui-quadrado e exato de Fisher foram utilizados para verificar associação entre as variáveis estudadas. Foi adotado o intervalo de confiança de 95% e a margem de erro de 5%. Verificou-se que a maioria dos pacientes era do sexo masculino (52,7%) e possuía entre 20 e 59 anos (54,5%). As patologias de base de maior prevalência foram as doenças sistêmicas (34,5%) e deficiência intelectual (32,7%). Em relação às medicações, 80% faziam uso contínuo de algum fármaco. A respeito das consultas odontológicas, a procura de 60% da amostra foi por motivo de dor e os procedimentos mais realizados, os restauradores (63,6%). Além disso, a estabilização física e sedação medicamentosa foram amplamente utilizadas nos pacientes com deficiência intelectual. O atendimento odontológico incluiu pacientes com diversas necessidades especiais e, apesar da clínica-escola em questão priorizar a conduta preventiva, a maior parte dos procedimentos executados foi curativo, podendo estar relacionado com a procura tardia pelo tratamento odontológico e dificuldades de acesso.

Oral mucositis is a common and debilitating consequence of cancer patients undergoing antineoplastic treatment. There is no consensus on the most appropriate treatment for this condition. The best protocol to use should. consider each patient's specific needs and cost-effectiveness of treatment. SummaryOnline-available information has been considered an accessory tool to estimate epidemiology and collect data on diseases and population behavior patterns. This study aimed to explore the potential use of Google and YouTube relative search volume to predict social distancing index in Brazil during COVID-19 outbreak and verify the correlation between social distancing measures with the course of the epidemic. Data concerning the social distancing index, epidemiological data on COVID-19 in Brazil and the search engines trends for “Coronavirus” were retrieved from online databases. Multiple linear regression was performed and resulted in a statistically significant model evidencing that Google and YouTube relative search volumes are predictors of the social distancing index. The Spearman correlation test revealed a weak correlation between social distancing measures and the course of the COVID-19 epidemic. Health authorities can apply these data to define the proper timing and location for practicing appropriate risk communication strategies.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the quality, reliability and readability of internet-based information on COVID-19 available on Brazil’ most used search engines.MethodsA total of 68 websites were selected through Google, Bing, and Yahoo. The websites content quality and reliability were evaluated using the DISCERN questionnaire, the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria, and the presence of the Health on Net (HON) certification. Readability was assessed by the Flesch Reading Ease adapted to Brazilian Portuguese (FRE-BP).ResultsThe web contents were considered moderate to low quality according to DISCERN and JAMA mean scores. Most of the sample presented very difficult reading levels and only 7.4% displayed HON certification. Websites of Governmental and health-related authorship nature showed lower JAMA mean scores and quality and readability measures did not correlate to the webpages content type.ConclusionCOVID-19 related contents available online were considered of low to moderate quality and not accessible.

Opportunistic infections in oral cavity can cause serious complications in immunocompromised cancer patients, being quick and efficient treatments options essential. This article proposes to report two clinical cases of adolescent patients diagnosed with leukemia and who presented infectious conditions in the oral cavity, in which antimicrobial photodynamic therapy was used as a adjuvant therapy to abbreviate the course of oral lesions.

Oral cancer persists as a public health problem. Thus, mechanisms that ensure active involvement of the population must be created. Within this context, the Mouth Cancer Control Program of the University of Pernambuco (UPE) has been updating and training professionals in the prevention, and differential and early diagnosis of oral cancer since 1998 by performing educational, preventive, and diagnostic activities without interruptions. CAAE: 0201.0.097.000-08. From January 2002 to January 2017, 1400 students from UPE and 300 students from other educational institutions participated in the development of the activities. A total of 8600 professionals were trained in 63 cities in Pernambuco and 59,600 individuals participated in the educational/preventive activities designed to improve self-care, prevention, and the early detection of oral cancer. A total of 2984 individuals were examined during the training. Among the oral lesions identified and investigated by biopsy, 33% were potentially malignant lesions and 12% were malignant lesions (cancer). Health education is an excellent tool for the popularization and diffusion of technical–scientific knowledge, demystifying the disease and bringing its description closer to the population, thus permitting the identification of risk factors and the search for prevention and early detection. Brazil still faces some challenges, but education and guaranteed access to and greater effectiveness of health services will provide better conditions for the prevention, early detection, and reduction of disabilities and death since oral cancer can be prevented and cured when diagnosed at an early stage.

O Papiloma Escamoso oral é uma neoplasia benigna de origem epitelial, bastante comum, associado à infecção pelo Papiloma Vírus Humano (HPV). Clinicamente apresenta-se como nódulo exofítico, mole, indolor e geralmente pedunculado, com aspecto verrucoso/papilomatoso. Esse trabalho tem por objetivo relatar um caso de uma paciente com diagnóstico clínico e histopatológico de papiloma escamoso oral de grande dimensão, com focos de displasia epitelial moderada, localizado em mucosa jugal e face interna de lábios do lado direito. O tratamento inicialmente indicado foi a excisão cirúrgica e, posteriormente a excisão cirúrgica com reconstrução plástica, porém a paciente em decorrência de questões sociais, medo e ausência de apoio familiar, mesmo sabendo dos riscos de transformação maligna da lesão recusou o tratamento. Apesar da necessidade de tratamento a paciente possui autonomia para tomada de decisões e o direito à recusa de tratamento é reconhecido pelo Código Civil brasileiro como um dos direitos da personalidade. Respeitar a autonomia da paciente caracteriza um sistema de saúde humanizado e constitui um dos principais desafios enfrentados pelos profissionais de saúde.

Patient N.J.E., a 69-year-old black male liver recipient, complained of pain in the oral cavity. Clinical examination revealed ulcerated lesions on the dorsal surface of the tongue, right buccal mucosa, and lower right vestibule. In view of clinical findings and medical history, the diagnostic hypothesis suggested an oral infection. The culture was carried out with the purpose of microbiologic analysis (swab) along with incisional biopsy of tongue lesion, leading to a diagnosis of Actinomyces infection. The patient was treated with specific antimicrobials, oral topical solutions, and, as an adjuvant, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). aPDT consisted of daily application of the photosensitizer on the lesions, and after 5 minutes, the low-level light laser was applied in the visible red spectrum (660 nm) with fixed power of 100 mW and energy density of 6 J/cm². After 15 days, good clinical tissue recovery was observed; however, because of other systemic complications, the patient died.

Patient J.C., 37 years old and male, was diagnosed as having a poorly differentiated metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the rhinopharynx treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy in 2008 with complete remission and has been in medical follow-up since then. In 2017, he attended a dentistry service, reporting the need of dental extraction. The clinical examination revealed remaining teeth in a poor state of preservation and also showed a bone exposure area, corresponding to the edentulous region of the right lower third molar, of elliptical shape and approximately 2 cm. Panoramic radiograph showed bone rarefaction in the reported region. J.C. stated that a dental surgical procedure had been performed on this area 1 month earlier. The diagnostic hypothesis was suggestive of osteoradionecrosis. Oral care protocol was prescribed, using mouthwashes with sodium bicarbonate, 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate, and 10-volume hydrogen peroxide. The patient was followed up biweekly, and after 4 months, the complete clinical repair was observed without painful symptomatology.
