1. Nitrogen fertilizer use reduction by two endophytic diazotrophic bacteria for soil nutrients and corn yield

Abstract: Today, the utilization of endophytic diazotrophic bacteria (EDB) purposely to minimize the application of urea fertilizer (UF), and enhance soil fertility, crop quality and corn yield in sustainable agricultural practices is an inevitable trend. The experiment was arranged outside the AGU green house of Agriculture Research Center, An Giang university, Vietnam, which consisted of two factors: (i) two EDB species [Bacillus sp. NTLG2-20 (Bacillus A) and Bacillus arybhattai strain CM44 (Bacillus B)] and (ii) three UF ratios (0.0, 100 and 200 kg N ha-1) and four replications. Research data presented that the fresh cob yield of Bacillus A was found 4.0% higher than that of Bacillus B and 12.7% than that of non EDB inoculation. Furthermore, the inoculation of Bacillus B had 9.02% higher fresh cob yield compared to non-inoculation. The 50% reduction of UF application combined EDB addition obtained the fresh cob with no significant difference, compared to 100% recommended urea application. The interaction between the effectiveness of EDB inoculation and UF reduction was clearly different in favor of corn grown on sandy loam soils with low nutrient contents. Both Bacillus A and Bacillus B had the abilities of high yield and good nitrogen fixation with the potential to simultaneously improve soil fertility and corn yield. The results of this study demonstrated that two strains of Bacillus A and Bacillus B have the potential to promote the growth and increase the yield of peanuts, and it should be suggested for future biological fertilizer production.

2. Impact of a community-based participatory research project with underserved communities at risk for hepatitis C virus in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: an evaluation study

Abstract: Abstract Background Participatory approaches have become a widely applied research approach. Despite their popularity, there are many challenges associated with the evaluation of participatory projects. Here we describe an evaluation of a community-based participatory research study of underserved communities in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam at risk for hepatitis C virus. The goals of our evaluation were to explore the main benefits and challenges of implementing and participating in a participatory study and to describe study impacts. Methods We conducted two meetings with leaders and members of the participating groups followed by in-depth interviews with 10 participants. We then held a dissemination meeting with over 70 participants, including the representatives of each group, researchers from non-governmental organizations (community-based, national and international), and govenrment officials from the Vietnam Ministry of Health and the Department of Health of HCMC. Results Results include four categories where we describe first the participatory impacts, followed by the collaborative impacts. Then we describe the benefits and challenges of creating and belonging to one of the groups, from members’ and leaders’ points of view. Finally, we describe the key suggestions that participants provided for future research. Conclusion In conclusion, the evaluation approach led to both a research reflection on the ‘success’ of the project and enabled participants themselves to reflect on the outcomes and benefits of the study from their point of view.

3. Feasibility and acceptability for LION, a fully remote, randomized clinical trial within the VA for light therapy to improve sleep in Veterans with and without TBI: An MTBI2 sponsored protocol.

Abstract: Sleep-wake disturbances frequently present in Veterans with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). These TBI-related sleep impairments confer significant burden and commonly exacerbate other functional impairments. Therapies to improve sleep following mTBI are limited and studies in Veterans are even more scarce. In our previous pilot work, morning bright light therapy (MBLT) was found to be a feasible behavioral sleep intervention in Veterans with a history of mTBI; however, this was single-arm, open-label, and non-randomized, and therefore was not intended to establish efficacy. The present study, LION (light vs ion therapy) extends this preliminary work as a fully powered, sham-controlled, participant-masked randomized controlled trial (NCT03968874), implemented as fully remote within the VA (target n = 120 complete). Randomization at 2:1 allocation ratio to: 1) active: MBLT (n = 80), and 2) sham: deactivated negative ion generator (n = 40); each with identical engagement parameters (60-min duration; within 2-hrs of waking; daily over 28-day duration). Participant masking via deception balanced expectancy assumptions across arms. Outcome measures were assessed following a 14-day baseline (pre-intervention), following 28-days of device engagement (post-intervention), and 28-days after the post-intervention assessment (follow-up). Primary outcomes were sleep measures, including continuous wrist-based actigraphy, self-report, and daily sleep dairy entries. Secondary/exploratory outcomes included cognition, mood, quality of life, circadian rhythm via dim light melatonin onset, and biofluid-based biomarkers. Participant drop out occurred in 85%, collectively establishing feasibility and acceptability for MBLT in Veterans with mTBI.

Abstract: Abstract Finding effective therapeutic targets to treat NRAS-mutated melanoma remains a challenge. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) recently emerged as essential regulators of tumorigenesis. Using a discovery approach combining experimental models and unbiased computational analysis complemented by validation in patient biospecimens, we identified a nuclear-enriched lncRNA (AC004540.4) that is upregulated in NRAS/MAPK-dependent melanoma, and that we named T-RECS. Considering potential innovative treatment strategies, we designed antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) to target T-RECS. T-RECS ASOs reduced the growth of melanoma cells and induced apoptotic cell death, while having minimal impact on normal primary melanocytes. Mechanistically, treatment with T-RECS ASOs downregulated the activity of pro-survival kinases and reduced the protein stability of hnRNPA2/B1, a pro-oncogenic regulator of MAPK signaling. Using patient- and cell line- derived tumor xenograft mouse models, we demonstrated that systemic treatment with T-RECS ASOs significantly suppressed the growth of melanoma tumors, with no noticeable toxicity. ASO-mediated T-RECS inhibition represents a promising RNA-targeting approach to improve the outcome of MAPK pathway-activated melanoma.

5. Intervention Targets to Optimize Antibiotic Prescribing on Discharge from the Hospital to Nursing Homes

Abstract: Background: Approximately half of antibiotics used in nursing home (NHs) are initiated in acute care hospitals prior to NH admission. Optimizing antibiotic prescribing on hospital discharge to these facilities presents an opportunity to improve NH antibiotic use. We aimed to identify intervention targets to optimize antibiotic use on discharge from the hospital to NHs. Methods: This was a multicenter, cross-sectional study across 9 acute care hospitals in Oregon, Wisconsin, and Washington. We selected a 20% random sample of adult (age >18) inpatients prescribed at least one antibiotic on discharge from the hospital to a NH between 2016-2018. We excluded patients discharged from the emergency department or an intensive care unit. Study data were electronically extracted from patients’ electronic health records and supplemented with manual chart review. Antibiotic optimization opportunities were determined by an infectious diseases (ID) physician or ID pharmacist and classified as definitely, possibly, or unlikely. Expert reviewers also recorded the type of optimization opportunity and the rationale for each determination. A gamma lasso algorithm was used to identify patient-level characteristics associated with definite optimization opportunity, which were then included in a logistic regression model. Results: There were 2761 antibiotic prescriptions among 2215 patients. Mean (standard deviation) age was 71.9 (14.3) years and 48.8% were male. Most discharges (83.1%) were prescribed one antibiotic, 15.2% were prescribed two antibiotics, and 1.8% were prescribed three antibiotics. The most frequently prescribed antibiotics were cephalexin (10.4%), vancomycin (9.8%), and amoxicillin clavulanate (8.4%). Among the 2761 antibiotic prescriptions, expert reviewers determined that 18.4% could definitely be optimized, 36.0% could possibly be optimized, and 45.3% unlikely could have been optimized. Among the 508 definite antibiotic optimization opportunities, 25.2% were to subtract the antibiotic, 56.3% were to change the antibiotic, 11.0% were to change the dose, 25.0% were to change the duration, 0.8% were to change the route, and 1.8% were to change the schedule. Patient-level characteristics found to be associated with definite antibiotic optimization opportunity included age over 80 years (odds ratio (OR)=1.44, 95% confidence interval (CI): [1.14, 1.82]), length of stay < 8 days (OR=1.40, 95% CI: [1.09, 1.81]), discharge with multiple antibiotic prescriptions (OR=1.92, 95% CI: [1.39, 2.63]), and discharge with prescription for oral vs intravenous (IV) antibiotics (OR=2.08, 95% CI: [1.49, 2.95]). Conclusion: We identified several patient and antibiotic characteristics which may serve as intervention targets to optimize antibiotic prescribing on discharge from the hospital to nursing homes.

6. Amelioration of age-related cognitive decline and anxiety in mice by Centella asiatica extract varies by sex, dose and mode of administration

Abstract: Background: A water extract (CAW) of the Ayurvedic plant Centella asiatica administered in drinking water has been shown to improve cognitive deficits in mouse models of aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Here the effects of CAW administered in drinking water or the diet on cognition, measures of anxiety and depression-like behavior in healthy aged mice are compared.Methods: Three- and eighteen-month-old male and female C57BL6 mice were administered rodent AIN-93M diet containing CAW (0, 0.2, 0.5 or 1% w/w) to provide 0, 200 mg/kg/d, 500 mg/kg/d or 1,000 mg/kg/d CAW for a total of 5 weeks. An additional group of eighteen-month-old mice were treated with CAW (10 mg/mL) in their drinking water CAW for a total of 5 weeks to deliver the same exposure of CAW as the highest dietary dose (1,000 mg/kg/d). CAW doses delivered were calculated based on food and water consumption measured in previous experiments. In the fourth and fifth weeks, mice underwent behavioral testing of cognition, anxiety and depression (n = 12 of each sex per treatment group in each test).Results: Aged mice of both sexes showed cognitive deficits relative to young mice while only female aged mice showed increased anxiety compared to the young female mice and no differences in depression were observed between the different ages. CAW (1,000 mg/kg/d) in the drinking water improved deficits in aged mice in learning, executive function and recognition memory in both sexes and attenuated the increased measures of anxiety observed in the aged female mice. However, CAW in the diet only improved executive function in aged mice at the highest dose (1,000 mg/kg/d) in both sexes and did so less robustly than when given in the water. There were no effects of CAW on depression-like behavior in aged animals regardless of whether it was administered in the diet or the water.Conclusions: These results suggest that CAW can ameliorate age-related changes in measures of anxiety and cognition and that the mode of administration is important for the effects of CAW on resilience to these age-related changes.

Abstract: IntroductionA water extract of Centella asiatica (L.) Urban [Apiaceae] (CAW) has demonstrated cognitive-enhancing effects in mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease and aging, the magnitude of which is influenced by whether CAW is delivered in the drinking water or the diet. These cognitive benefits are accompanied by improvements in oxidative stress and mitochondrial function in the brain, two pathways related to the neuroinflammatory response. The effect of CAW on neuroinflammation, however, has not been directly studied. Here, we investigated the effect of CAW on neuroinflammation in 5xFAD mice and compared plasma levels of CAW’s active compounds following two modes of CAW administration.MethodsEight-to-nine-month-old male and female 5xFAD mice and their wild-type littermates were administered CAW in their diet or drinking water (0 or 1,000 mg/kg/day) for five weeks. Immunohistochemistry was performed for β-amyloid (Aβ), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and Griffonia simplicifolia lectin I (GSL I) in the cortex and hippocampus. Gene expression of inflammatory mediators (IL-6, TNFα, IL-1β, TREM2, AIF1, CX3CR1, CX3CL1, CD36, C3AR1, RAGE, CCR6, CD3E) was measured in the deep grey matter.ResultsCAW decreased cortical Aβ plaque burden in female 5xFAD mice administered CAW in the drinking water but had no effect on Aβ plaques in other treatment groups. CAW did not impact elevated levels of GFAP or GSL I in 5xFAD mice, regardless of sex, brain region, or mode of CAW administration. In the deep grey matter, CAW increased C3AR1 expression in 5xFAD females administered CAW in the drinking water and decreased IL-1β expression in 5xFAD males administered CAW in the diet. CAW had no effect, however, on gene expression levels of any other inflammatory mediator in the deep grey, for either sex or mode of CAW administration. Mice administered CAW in the drinking water versus the diet had significantly higher plasma levels of CAW compounds.DiscussionCAW had little impact on the neuroinflammatory markers selected for evaluation in the present study, suggesting that the cognitive benefits of CAW may not be mediated by an anti-inflammatory effect or that additional molecular markers are needed to fully characterize the effect of CAW on neuroinflammation.

8. Barycentric-Alignment and Reconstruction Loss Minimization for Domain Generalization

Abstract: This paper advances the theory and practice of Domain Generalization (DG) in machine learning. We consider the typical DG setting where the hypothesis is composed of a representation mapping followed by a labeling function. Within this setting, the majority of popular DG methods aim to jointly learn the representation and the labeling functions by minimizing a well-known upper bound for the classification risk in the unseen domain. In practice, however, methods based on this theoretical upper bound ignore a term that cannot be directly optimized due to its dual dependence on both the representation mapping and the unknown optimal labeling function in the unseen domain. To bridge this gap between theory and practice, we introduce a new upper bound that is free of terms having such dual dependence, resulting in a fully optimizable risk upper bound for the unseen domain. Our derivation leverages classical and recent transport inequalities that link optimal transport metrics with information-theoretic measures. Compared to previous bounds, our bound introduces two new terms: (i) the Wasserstein-2 barycenter term that aligns distributions between domains, and (ii) the reconstruction loss term that assesses the quality of representation in reconstructing the original data. Based on this new upper bound, we propose a novel DG algorithm named Wasserstein Barycenter Auto-Encoder (WBAE) that simultaneously minimizes the classification loss, the barycenter loss, and the reconstruction loss. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms current state-of-the-art DG algorithms on several datasets.

9. Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) increases biogas effluent pollutant removal efficacy and proves a positive substrate for renewable energy production

Abstract: Background Aquatic plants play a crucial role in nature-based wastewater treatment and provide a promising substrate for renewable energy production using anaerobic digestion (AD) technology. This study aimed to examine the contaminant removal from AD effluent by water lettuce (WL) and produce biogas from WL biomass co-digested with pig dung (PD) in a farm-scale biogas digester. Methods The first experiment used styrofoam boxes containing husbandry AD effluent. WLs were initially arranged in 50%, 25%, 12.5%, and 0% surface coverage. Each treatment was conducted in five replicates under natural conditions. In the second experiment, WL biomass was co-digested with PD into an existing anaerobic digester to examine biogas production on a farm scale. Results Over 30 days, the treatment efficiency of TSS, BOD5, COD, TKN, and TP in the effluent was 93.75–97.66%, 76.63–82.56%, 76.78–82.89%, 61.75–63.75%, and 89.00–89.57%, respectively. Higher WL coverage increased the pollutant elimination potential. The WL biomass doubled after 12 days for all treatments. In the farm-scale biogas production, the biogas yield varied between 190.6 and 292.9 L kg VSadded−1. The methane content reached over 54%. Conclusions WL removed AD effluent nutrients effectively through a phytoremediation system and generated significant biomass for renewable energy production in a farm-scale model.

Abstract: Background and Aims: About 1% of men suffer from azoospermia, a condition of having no sperm in the ejaculate. Non-obstructive azoospermia, which affects 60% of azoospermia patients, is the most severe form of male infertility and requires testicular sperm extraction for sperm retrieval. Despite a 50% success rate, if no mature sperm is found, NOA men have no choice become biological fathers. To overcome this, researchers have attempted to use spermatid injection techniques, such as round spermatid injection (ROSI) or elongating/elongated spermatid injection (ELSI), to give hope for pregnancy. Spermatids are immature sperm but contain a haploid genome as spermatozoa. The aim of this prospective cohort study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ROSI and ELSI in cases where spermatozoa were unavailable. Method: Ninety-nine men diagnosed with NOA were recruited for the study. When the male partners lack spermatozoa in the testicular biopsy but have normal good-looking spermatids, they are consulted to join in the research. The intervention group received ROSI and ELSI, while the control group received spermatozoa injection into oocytes (ICSI). The primary outcome measures were fertilization, embryo development, clinical pregnancy, and live birth rate. Results: The overall fertilization rate (2PN) per MII oocyte injected after ROSI was low at 31.0% compared to ELSI and ICSI at 67.7% and 77.2%, respectively. The pregnancy rate after ROSI was also low, with 3.3% per transferred cycle and 2.2% per embryo transferred. The pregnancy rate of ROSI was much lower than ELSI (42.9%) and ICSI (55.6%). Normal pregnancy and live birth resulted in three groups (Table 1). Conclusion: ROSI and ELSI can be considered alternative methods of infertility treatment in cases where spermatozoa are unavailable.

11. #275 : A Comparative Study of Hatching Methods for Biopsy Time and Ploidy Status Assessment

Abstract: Background and Aims: Preimplantation genetic testing plays a crucial role in assisted reproductive technologies by aiding in the selection of embryos with optimal developmental potential. This study aims to compare the time required for biopsy and evaluate the ploidy status between Day3 and Day4 hatching-based methods and cases without assisted hatching (AH). Method: We retrospectively analyzed data from 257 embryos from 56 patients between November 2022 and March 2023. Embryos were categorized into three groups: Day3 hatching-based method (n=43), and Day4 hatching-based method (n=134), and cases without AH (n=80). We used Kruskal-Wallis tests and chi-square tests to compare the groups with R software (version 4.1.0) at a significance level of 0.05. Results: There was a significant difference in the median biopsy time per embryo between the hatching-based methods (H = 6.01, p = 0.049). The Day4 hatching-based method had a significantly shorter biopsy time per embryo than cases without AH (W = 95, p = 0.037). There were no significant differences in the percentages of euploid, aneuploid, or mosaic embryos between the hatching-based methods. The Chi-square test showed no significant differences between the observed and expected percentages of euploid ([Formula: see text] = 0.22, p = 0.893), aneuploid ([Formula: see text] = 2.35, p = 0.308), or mosaic ([Formula: see text]= 0.58, p = 0.748) embryos across all hatching-based methods. The Chi-square test of independence showed no significant differences in the percentages of euploid ([Formula: see text] = 0.56, p = 0.755), aneuploid ([Formula: see text] = 1.41, p = 0.495), or mosaic ([Formula: see text] = 0.22, p = 0.896) embryos between the hatching-based methods. Conclusion: We suggest that the Day4 hatching-based method may provide a significant advantage in terms of shorter biopsy time per embryo compared to cases without AH, but there were no significant differences in the percentages of euploid, aneuploid, or mosaic embryos between the hatching-based methods.

The formulation of stochastic analysis of the non-uniform beam is established using perturbation method in conjunction with finite element method. Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) used for validation with stochastic finite element approach. The spectral representation was used to generate a random field to employ the Monte Carlo simulation. 13. High pulse pressure impairs cerebral artery endothelial function in young, but not old, mice

Abstract: One of the hallmarks of vascular aging is increased pulse pressure. This elevated pulse pressure is associated with deleterious effects on cerebral vascular function; however, it is unknown if age modulates the susceptibility to high pulse pressure. To examine the effects of age on the cerebral artery response to pulse pressure, we studied isolated cerebral arteries collected from young (6.1 ± 0.2 mo) and old (26.7 ± 0.5 mo) male C57BL/6 mice. Isolated cerebral arteries were exposed ex vivo to static pressure, low pulse pressure (25 mmHg), and high pulse pressure (50 mmHg). In cerebral arteries from young mice, endothelium-dependent dilation was similar between the static and low pulse pressure conditions. Exposure to high pulse pressure impaired endothelium-dependent dilation in cerebral arteries from young mice, mediated by less nitric oxide bioavailability and greater oxidative stress. Cerebral arteries from old mice had impaired cerebral artery endothelium-dependent dilation at static pressure compared with young cerebral arteries. However, exposure to low or high pulse pressure did not cause any further impairments to endothelium-dependent dilation in old cerebral arteries compared with static pressure. The old cerebral arteries had less distension during exposure to high pulse pressure and greater stiffness compared with young cerebral arteries. These results indicate that acute exposure to high pulse pressure impairs endothelium-dependent dilation in young, but not old, cerebral arteries. The greater stiffness of cerebral arteries from old mice potentially protects against the negative consequences of high pulse pressure.

Abstract: BackgroundApproximately 1. 07 million people in Vietnam are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). To address this epidemic, the South East Asian Research Collaborative in Hepatitis (SEARCH) launched a 600-patient cohort study and two clinical trials, both investigating shortened treatment strategies for chronic HCV infection with direct-acting antiviral drugs. We conducted ethnographic research with a subset of trial participants and found that the majority were aware of HCV infection and its implications and were motivated to seek treatment. However, people who inject drugs (PWID), and other groups at risk for HCV were under-represented, although injecting drug use is associated with high rates of HCV.Material and MethodsWe designed a community-based participatory research (CBPR) study to engage in dialogues surrounding HCV and other community-prioritized health issues with underserved groups at risk for HCV in Ho Chi Minh City. The project consists of three phases: situation analysis, CBPR implementation, and dissemination. In this paper, we describe the results of the first phase (i.e., the situation analysis) in which we conducted desk research and organized stakeholder mapping meetings with representatives from local non-government and community-based organizations where we used participatory research methods to identify and analyze key stakeholders working with underserved populations.ResultsTwenty six institutions or groups working with the key underserved populations were identified. Insights about the challenges and dynamics of underserved communities were also gathered. Two working groups made up of representatives from the NGO and CBO level were formed.DiscussionUsing the information provided by local key stakeholders to shape the project has helped us to build solid relationships, give the groups a sense of ownership from the early stages, and made the project more context specific. These steps are not only important preliminary steps for participatory studies but also for other research that takes place within the communities.

15. A chart review tool to systematically assess the safety of prehospital care for children with out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest

Abstract: Abstract Objective Create an easy‐to‐use pediatric out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA)‐specific chart review tool to reliably detect severe adverse safety events (ASEs) in the prehospital care of children with OHCA. Methods We revised our previously validated pediatric prehospital adverse event detection system (PEDS) tool, used to evaluate ASEs in the prehospital care of children during emergent calls, to create an OHCA‐specific chart review tool. We developed decision support for reviewers, reviewer training, and a dedicated section for chart data abstraction. We randomly selected 28 charts for independent review by 2 expert reviewers who determined the presence or absence of a severe ASE for each care episode and identified the domain of care and preventability for each ASE. We calculated inter‐rater agreement in the assessment of the presence or absence of a severe ASE using Gwet's first‐order agreement coefficient (AC1). Results The PEDS‐OHCA chart review tool has 6 sections, with a minimum of 70 and maximum of 667 total possible fields. We found inter‐rater agreement of 0.83 (95% confidence interval, 0.63–0.99) between our 2 reviewers for the overall detection of a severe ASE and an average time to complete of 8 minutes (range, 2–25 minutes). Inter‐rater agreement in the detection of a severe ASE in each individual domain ranged from 0.36 to 0.96. Conclusions The PEDS‐OHCA is the first chart review tool to systematically evaluate the safety and quality of EMS care for children with OHCA. This tool may help improve understanding of the quality of EMS care for children with OHCA, which is essential to improving outcomes.

Abstract: We present a random measure approach for modeling exploration, i.e., the execution of measure-valued controls, in continuous-time reinforcement learning (RL) with controlled diffusion and jumps. First, we consider the case when sampling the randomized control in continuous time takes place on a discrete-time grid and reformulate the resulting stochastic differential equation (SDE) as an equation driven by suitable random measures. The construction of these random measures makes use of the Brownian motion and the Poisson random measure (which are the sources of noise in the original model dynamics) as well as the additional random variables, which are sampled on the grid for the control execution. Then, we prove a limit theorem for these random measures as the mesh-size of the sampling grid goes to zero, which leads to the grid-sampling limit SDE that is jointly driven by white noise random measures and a Poisson random measure. We also argue that the grid-sampling limit SDE can substitute the exploratory SDE and the sample SDE of the recent continuous-time RL literature, i.e., it can be applied for the theoretical analysis of exploratory control problems and for the derivation of learning algorithms., Comment: 33 pages

Abstract: Abstract Background Drug overdose is the leading cause of death after release from prison, and this risk is significantly higher among women compared to men. Within the first 2 weeks after release, the risk of death from drug overdose is 12.7 times higher than the general population, with risk of death further elevated among females. Although female inmates have higher rates of opioid use disorder and post-release overdose fatality, justice-involved women are under-represented in studies of medications for opioid use disorder. The Reducing Overdose After Release from Incarceration (ROAR) pilot intervention and evaluation (recruitment June 2019 through December 2020) aims to reduce opioid overdose among women released to the community following incarceration in state prison. The evaluation further assesses induction, acceptance and effectiveness of extended release naltrexone in a female post-prison population. Methods/design In the week prior to their release, female adults in custody with moderate to severe opioid use disorder start treatment with extended release naltrexone, an injectable opioid antagonist that blocks the effects of opioids for up to 1 month. All ROAR participants receive training to use naloxone rescue kits and are provided nasal naloxone at release. Ongoing support from a certified recovery mentor to facilitate sustained engagement with treatment for substance use disorders begins in the month prior to release from prison and continues for 6 months in community. We evaluate the association between ROAR participation and the primary outcome of opioid overdose. Using administrative data provided by the Oregon Department of Corrections and the Oregon Health Authority, we compare the odds of overdose among ROAR participants versus a comparison group of females released from prison during the study period. Evaluation activities in community includes survey and qualitative interviews for 6 months post release, as well as a review of clinic records to assess retention on medication among the pilot cohort (N = 100). Discussion ROAR is a collaboration between Oregon’s public health, criminal justice, and medical communities. The ROAR intervention and evaluation provide critical information on improving interventions to prevent opioid overdose and improve retention on treatment in community in an overlooked, high-risk population: incarcerated women re-entering the community. 19. Isolated bilateral, large, basal ganglia haemorrhage following a traumatic brain injury: A case report

Abstract: Traumatic basal ganglia haemorrhage is rarely seen in clinical practice. Bilateral basal ganglia hematoma without any other cerebral lesions due to trauma is extremely uncommon and has been reported only in a few cases. Although the mechanisms of this condition are unclear, haemorrhagic contusions are thought to arise as a consequence of a shearing strain on cranial blood vessels due to high-velocity forces at the time of the injury. Here we describe a 63-year-old female patient with an isolated bilateral, large, basal ganglia haemorrhage secondary to a road traffic accident. The patient was promptly diagnosed and conservatively treated and had fully recovered after two months.

Abstract: A procedure is developed for power analysis and sample size calculation for a class of complex testing problems regarding the largest binomial probability under a combination of treatments. It is shown that the asymptotic null distribution of the likelihood-ratio statistic is not parameter-free, but $\chi _{1}^{2} $ is a conservative asymptotic null distribution. A nonlinear Gauss-Seidel algorithm is proposed to uniquely determine the alternative for the power and sample size calculation given the baseline binomial probability. An example from an animal clinical trial is discussed.

22. Investigating Methods for Cognitive Workload Estimation for Assistive Robots

Abstract: Robots interacting with humans in assistive contexts have to be sensitive to human cognitive states to be able to provide help when it is needed and not overburden the human when the human is busy. Yet, it is currently still unclear which sensing modality might allow robots to derive the best evidence of human workload. In this work, we analyzed and modeled data from a multi-modal simulated driving study specifically designed to evaluate different levels of cognitive workload induced by various secondary tasks such as dialogue interactions and braking events in addition to the primary driving task. Specifically, we performed statistical analyses of various physiological signals including eye gaze, electroencephalography, and arterial blood pressure from the healthy volunteers and utilized several machine learning methodologies including k-nearest neighbor, naive Bayes, random forest, support-vector machines, and neural network-based models to infer human cognitive workload levels. Our analyses provide evidence for eye gaze being the best physiological indicator of human cognitive workload, even when multiple signals are combined. Specifically, the highest accuracy (in %) of binary workload classification based on eye gaze signals is 80.45 ∓ 3.15 achieved by using support-vector machines, while the highest accuracy combining eye gaze and electroencephalography is only 77.08 ∓ 3.22 achieved by a neural network-based model. Our findings are important for future efforts of real-time workload estimation in the multimodal human-robot interactive systems given that eye gaze is easy to collect and process and less susceptible to noise artifacts compared to other physiological signal modalities.

Abstract: This paper presents an energy resolution study of the JUNO experiment, incorporating the latest knowledge acquired during the detector construction phase. The determination of neutrino mass ordering in JUNO requires an exceptional energy resolution better than 3\% at 1~MeV. To achieve this ambitious goal, significant efforts have been undertaken in the design and production of the key components of the JUNO detector. Various factors affecting the detection of inverse beta decay signals have an impact on the energy resolution, extending beyond the statistical fluctuations of the detected number of photons, such as the properties of the liquid scintillator, performance of photomultiplier tubes, and the energy reconstruction algorithm. To account for these effects, a full JUNO simulation and reconstruction approach is employed. This enables the modeling of all relevant effects and the evaluation of associated inputs to accurately estimate the energy resolution. The results of study reveal an energy resolution of 2.95\% at 1~MeV. Furthermore, this study assesses the contribution of major effects to the overall energy resolution budget. This analysis serves as a reference for interpreting future measurements of energy resolution during JUNO data collection. Moreover, it provides a guideline for comprehending the energy resolution characteristics of liquid scintillator-based detectors.

Abstract: We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 \nu$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 \nu$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\bar{\nu}_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $\tau/B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, {\rm yr}$ and $\tau/B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, {\rm yr}$., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: Abstract The goal to eliminate malaria from the Asia-Pacific by 2030 will require the safe and widespread delivery of effective radical cure of malaria. In October 2017, the Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Network Vivax Working Group met to discuss the impediments to primaquine (PQ) radical cure, how these can be overcome and the methodological difficulties in assessing clinical effectiveness of radical cure. The salient discussions of this meeting which involved 110 representatives from 18 partner countries and 21 institutional partner organizations are reported. Context specific strategies to improve adherence are needed to increase understanding and awareness of PQ within affected communities; these must include education and health promotion programs. Lessons learned from other disease programs highlight that a package of approaches has the greatest potential to change patient and prescriber habits, however optimizing the components of this approach and quantifying their effectiveness is challenging. In a trial setting, the reactivity of participants results in patients altering their behaviour and creates inherent bias. Although bias can be reduced by integrating data collection into the routine health care and surveillance systems, this comes at a cost of decreasing the detection of clinical outcomes. Measuring adherence and the factors that relate to it, also requires an in-depth understanding of the context and the underlying sociocultural logic that supports it. Reaching the elimination goal will require innovative approaches to improve radical cure for vivax malaria, as well as the methods to evaluate its effectiveness.

Abstract: Motivated by the trade-off between exploitation and exploration in reinforcement learning, we study a continuous-time entropy-regularized mean variance portfolio selection problem in the presence of jumps. We propose an exploratory SDE for the wealth process associated with multiple risky assets which exhibit L\'evy jumps. In contrast to the existing literature, we study the limiting behavior of the natural discrete-time formulation of the wealth process associated to a randomized control in order to derive the continuous-time dynamics. We then show that an optimal distributional control of the continuous-time entropy-regularized exploratory mean-variance problem is Gaussian. The respective optimal wealth process solves a linear SDE whose representation is explicitly obtained., Comment: 32 pages

33. Effects of a Newly Developed Enzyme-Assisted Extraction Method on the Biological Activities of Fucoidans in Ocular Cells

Abstract: Fucoidans from brown seaweeds are promising substances as potential drugs against age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The heterogeneity of fucoidans requires intensive research in order to find suitable species and extraction methods. Ten different fucoidan samples extracted enzymatically from Laminaria digitata (LD), Saccharina latissima (SL) and Fucus distichus subsp. evanescens (FE) were tested for toxicity, oxidative stress protection and VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) inhibition. For this study crude fucoidans were extracted from seaweeds using different enzymes and SL fucoidans were further separated into three fractions (SL_F1-F3) by ion-exchange chromatography (IEX). Fucoidan composition was analyzed by high performance anion exchange chromatography (HPAEC) after acid hydrolysis. The crude extracts contained alginate, while two of the fractionated SL fucoidans SL_F2 and SL_F3 were highly pure. Cell viability was assessed with an 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) assay in OMM-1 and ARPE-19. Protective effects were investigated after 24 h of stress insult in OMM-1 and ARPE-19. Secreted VEGF was analyzed via ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) in ARPE-19 cells. Fucoidans showed no toxic effects. In OMM-1 SL_F2 and several FE fucoidans were protective. LD_SiAT2 (Cellic®CTec2 + Sigma-Aldrich alginate lyase), FE_SiAT3 (Cellic® CTec3 + Sigma-Aldrich alginate lyase), SL_F2 and SL_F3 inhibited VEGF with the latter two as the most effective. We could show that enzyme treated fucoidans in general and the fractionated SL fucoidans SL_F2 and SL_F3 are very promising for beneficial AMD relevant biological activities.

Abstract: The core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is considered one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the supernova (SN) burst presents a unique opportunity for multi-messenger observations of CCSN events. In this study, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed to ensure both prompt alert speed and comprehensive coverage of progenitor stars. It incorporates prompt monitors on the electronic board as well as online monitors at the data acquisition stage. Assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system exhibits sensitivity to pre-SN neutrinos up to a distance of approximately 1.6 (0.9) kiloparsecs and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kiloparsecs for a progenitor mass of 30 solar masses, considering both normal and inverted mass ordering scenarios. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by analyzing the accumulated event anisotropy of inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos. Abstract: Automatic and accurate segmentation of colon polyps is essential for early diagnosis of colorectal cancer. Advanced deep learning models have shown promising results in polyp segmentation. However, they still have limitations in representing multi-scale features and generalization capability. To address these issues, this paper introduces RaBiT, an encoder-decoder model that incorporates a lightweight Transformer-based architecture in the encoder to model multiple-level global semantic relationships. The decoder consists of several bidirectional feature pyramid layers with reverse attention modules to better fuse feature maps at various levels and incrementally refine polyp boundaries. We also propose ideas to lighten the reverse attention module and make it more suitable for multi-class segmentation. Extensive experiments on several benchmark datasets show that our method outperforms existing methods across all datasets while maintaining low computational complexity. Moreover, our method demonstrates high generalization capability in cross-dataset experiments, even when the training and test sets have different characteristics.

Abstract: We discuss JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo via detecting inverse beta decay reactions of electron anti-neutrinos resulting from the annihilation. We study possible backgrounds to the signature, including the reactor neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, charged- and neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos, backgrounds from muon-induced fast neutrons and cosmogenic isotopes. A fiducial volume cut, as well as the pulse shape discrimination and the muon veto are applied to suppress the above backgrounds. Abstract: The main task of the Top Tracker detector of the neutrino reactor experiment Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is to reconstruct and extrapolate atmospheric muon tracks down to the central detector. This muon tracker will help to evaluate the contribution of the cosmogenic background to the signal. The Top Tracker is located above JUNO's water Cherenkov Detector and Central Detector, covering about 60% of the surface above them. The JUNO Top Tracker is constituted by the decommissioned OPERA experiment Target Tracker modules. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multianode photomultiplier tubes. Compared to the OPERA Target Tracker, the JUNO Top Tracker uses new electronics able to cope with the high rate produced by the high rock radioactivity compared to the one in Gran Sasso underground laboratory. Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), the first multi-kton liquid scintillator detector, which is under construction in China, will have a unique potential to perform a real-time measurement of solar neutrinos well below the few MeV threshold typical for Water Cherenkov detectors. JUNO's large target mass and excellent energy resolution are prerequisites for reaching unprecedented levels of precision. In this paper, we provide estimation of the JUNO sensitivity to 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrinos that can be obtained via a spectral analysis above the 0.45 MeV threshold. This study is performed assuming different scenarios of the liquid scintillator radiopurity, ranging from the most opti mistic one corresponding to the radiopurity levels obtained by the Borexino experiment, up to the minimum requirements needed to perform the neutrino mass ordering determination with reactor antineutrinos - the main goal of JUNO. Our study shows that in most scenarios, JUNO will be able to improve the current best measurements on 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrino fluxes. We also perform a study on the JUNO capability to detect periodical time variations in the solar neutrino flux, such as the day-night modulation induced by neutrino flavor regeneration in Earth, and the modulations induced by temperature changes driven by helioseismic waves.

44. PDIWS: Thermal Imaging Dataset for Person Detection in Intrusion Warning Systems

Abstract: In this paper, we present a synthetic thermal imaging dataset for Person Detection in Intrusion Warning Systems (PDIWS). The dataset consists of a training set with 2000 images and a test set with 500 images. Each image is synthesized by compounding a subject (intruder) with a background using the modified Poisson image editing method. There are a total of 50 different backgrounds and nearly 1000 subjects divided into five classes according to five human poses: creeping, crawling, stooping, climbing and other. The presence of the intruder will be confirmed if the first four poses are detected. Advanced object detection algorithms have been implemented with this dataset and give relatively satisfactory results, with the highest mAP values of 95.5% and 90.9% for IoU of 0.5 and 0.75 respectively. 45. HUST bearing: a practical dataset for ball bearing fault diagnosis

Abstract: In this work, we introduce a practical dataset named HUST bearing, that provides a large set of vibration data on different ball bearings. This dataset contains 90 raw vibration data of 6 types of defects (inner crack, outer crack, ball crack, and their 2-combinations) on 5 types of bearing at 3 working conditions with the sample rate of 51,200 samples per second. We established the envelope analysis and order tracking analysis on the introduced dataset to allow an initial evaluation of the data. A number of classical machine learning classification methods are used to identify bearing faults of the dataset using features in different domains. The typical advanced unsupervised transfer learning algorithms also perform to observe the transferability of knowledge among parts of the dataset. The experimental results of examined methods on the dataset gain divergent accuracy up to 100% on classification task and 60-80% on unsupervised transfer learning task., Comment: We are considering some issues in the paper

Abstract: In this paper, we prove some coupled fixed point theorems for O-compatible mappings in partially ordered generalized metric spaces under certain conditions to extend and complement the recent fixed point theorems due to Bhaskar and Lakshmikantham [Nonlinear Anal. TMA 65 (2006) 1379 - 1393] and Berinde [Nonlinear Anal. TMA 74 (2011) 7347-7355]. We give some examples to illustrate our results. An application to integro-differential equations is also given.
