Abstract

A randomized comparison of hydroxyurea with anagrelide in the treatment of essential thrombocythemia is conducted. The results reveal that hydroxyurea plus low-dose aspirin is superior to anagrelide plus low-dose aspirin for patients with essential thrombocythemia at high risk for vascular events. more...

Abstract

A 80-year-old man was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, with refractive anemia resistant to treatment and increased levels of blood platelet cells. Myelodysplastic syndrome is a bone marrow disorder. The patient was admitted to the hospital after passing bloody stools several times during the day. He had high blood pressure and diabetes, and had surgery for prostate cancer 10 years earlier. A rectal examination revealed bleeding inside the large intestine. Laboratory tests indicated that the patient was anemic, and abnormal platelets were seen in a blood sample. A bone marrow biopsy and aspiration revealed that the patient had myelodysplastic syndrome.
