3. Characteristics of Infragravity Waves in Western Australian Coast.

Abstract

The Oceanographic Services of the Department of Transport Western Australia (DoT) gathers high-frequency (1 Hz) water levels at several nearshore locations along the coastline under the State Oceanographic Nearshore Data Acquisition Program (SONDAP). The water level data has been collected using RBR pressure transducers (PT) to investigate infragravity (IG) wave characteristics in DoT facilities. The pressure data is available at 28 locations in 19 sites along the Western Australia (WA) coastline, from Port Hedland on the northwest coast to Hopetoun on the south coast. Frequency domain analyses were undertaken to process the pressure data and to derive power spectral densities of water levels. Correlation coefficients, significant wave heights and peak wave periods are also calculated to compare the characteristics of dominant periods, energy levels, interaction with gravity waves, and response to different weather events. Our study shows that in deepwater sites, the IG band energy is relatively lower than that of the swell wave band, and vice versa in shallowwater sites. IG energy increases during high energetic sea/swell events, and the energy is further enhanced during weather events. A strong correlation prevails between IG and swell wave bands. While these characteristics are common for the sites in the southwest region, the study shows that the sites in the northwest region do not follow these observations. IG energy becomes more energetic in enclosed areas and is characterized by waves higher than swell wave heights. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
