Abstract Background A bony Bankart lesion directly affects the stability of the shoulder by reducing the glenoid joint-contact area. The aim of this study was to report on the epidemiological data relating to bony Bankart lesions in Sweden using the Swedish fracture register. The purpose is to evaluate age and sex distribution in the population with bony Bankart lesions, its impact on treatment strategy and further to analyse patient-reported outcomes. Methods This was an epidemiological descriptive study. The inclusion criteria were all patients with a unilateral bony Bankart lesion registered between April 2012 and April 2019. The patients’ specific data (age, sex, type and time of injury, treatment option and patient-reported outcomes) were extracted from the Swedish fracture register database. Results A total of 790 unilateral bony Bankart fractures were identified. The majority of the patients were male (58.7%). The median age for all patients at the time of injury was 57 years. Females had a higher median age of 66 years, compared with males, 51 years. Most of the bony Bankart lesions, 662 (91.8%), were registered as a low-energy trauma. More than two-thirds of all treatment registered cases, 509/734 patients (69.3%), were treated non-surgically, 225 (30.7%) were treated surgically, while, in 17 patients (7.5% of all surgically treated patients), the treatment was changed from non-surgical to surgical due to recurrent instability. Surgical treatment was chosen for 149 (35%) of the males and for 76 (25%) of the females. Patient quality of life decreased slightly in both surgically and non-surgically treated groups 1 year after bony Bankart injury. Conclusion This national register-based study provides detailed information on the epidemiology, choice of treatment and patient-reported outcomes in a large cohort of bony Bankart lesions. Most bony Bankart lesions affected males between 40 and 75 years after low-energy falls and non-surgical treatment dominated.

Abstract Background The number of studies with a large cohort of patients that primarily focus on patient-reported outcomes after ACL reconstruction in children and adolescents is limited. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether patient age affects the proportion of patients that achieve a patient-acceptable symptom state (PASS) on the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) subscales one, two, five and 10 years after an ACL reconstruction. Methods The patient data in the present study were extracted from the Swedish National Knee Ligament Register (SNKLR). Patients aged between five and 35 years that underwent a primary ACL reconstruction between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2017 and had completed the KOOS questionnaire at the one-, two-, five- or 10-year follow-up were included. A total of 2,848 patients met the inclusion criteria and were included in the study; 47 paediatric patients (females 5–13, males 5–15 years), 522 adolescents (females 14–19, males 16–19 years) and 2,279 young adults (females 20–35, males 20–35 years). The results from the KOOS were presented as the mean and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the mean. For comparisons between groups, the chi-square test was used for non-ordered categorical variables. For pairwise comparisons between groups, Fisher’s exact test (2-sided) was used for dichotomous variables. All the statistical analyses was set at 5%. IgG subclass-specific differences in biological function and in vitro stability are often referred to variations in the conformational flexibility, while this flexibility has rarely been characterized. Here, small-angle X-ray scattering data from IgG1, IgG2 and IgG4 antibodies, which were designed with identical variable regions, were thoroughly analysed by the ensemble optimization method. The extended analysis of the optimized ensembles through shape clustering reveals distinct subclass-specific conformational preferences, which provide new insights for understanding the variations in physical/chemical stability and biological function of therapeutic antibodies. Importantly, the way that specific differences in the linker region correlate with the solution structure of intact antibodies is revealed, thereby visualizing future potential for the rational design of antibodies with designated physicochemical properties and tailored effector functions. In addition, this advanced computational approach is applicable to other flexible multi-domain systems and extends the potential for investigating flexibility in solutions of macromolecules by small-angle X-ray scattering.

In recent decades, a consensus has emerged among educators and scientists that all compulsory school students need good science education. The debate about its purpose and nature as a school subject in an emerging information society has not been as conclusive. To further understand this, it helps to examine how the science curriculum has transformed and what forces have shaped it as a core curricular area over time. This article sheds light on the transformation of the science curriculum for compulsory schools in Iceland in force from 1960 to 2010. Using criteria based on curriculum ideologies regarding the function of learners, instructors and subject matter in the learning process and the orientation of content and product versus process and development, it offers findings from content analysis of the intended science curriculum. The official curriculum was studied and conceptualised as it has evolved over time. The curriculum developers appear to have been striving for a compromise between conflicting views, resulting in what the authors of this article conceive as a "kaleidoscopic quilt" of ideas over the period studied. We report high-resolution observations of the southward-IMF cusp/cleft ionosphere made on December 16th 1998 by the EISCAT (European incoherent scatter) Svalbard radar (ESR), and compare them with observations of dayside auroral luminosity, as seen at a wavelength of 630 nm by a meridian scanning photometer at Ny Ålesund, and of plasma flows, as seen by the CUTLASS (co-operative UK twin location auroral sounding system) Finland HF radar. The optical data reveal a series of poleward-moving transient red-line (630 nm) enhancements, events that have been associated with bursts in the rate of magnetopause reconnection generating new open flux. The combined observations at this time have strong similarities to predictions of the effects of soft electron precipitation modulated by pulsed reconnection, as made by Davis and Lockwood (1996); however, the effects of rapid zonal flow in the ionosphere, caused by the magnetic curvature force on the newly opened field lines, are found to be a significant additional factor. In particular, it is shown how enhanced plasma loss rates induced by the rapid convection can explain two outstanding anomalies of the 630 nm transients, namely how minima in luminosity form between the poleward-moving events and how events can re-brighten as they move poleward. The observations show how cusp/cleft aurora and transient poleward-moving auroral forms appear in the ESR data and the conditions which cause enhanced 630 nm emission in the transients: they are an important first step in enabling the ESR to identify these features away from the winter solstice when supporting auroral observations are not available.Key words: Ionosphere (polar ionosphere) - Magnetospheric physics (magnetopause; cusp and boundary layers; solar wind-magnetosphere interactions)

Dayside poleward moving auroral forms (PMAFs) were detected between 06:30 and 07:00 UT on December 16, 1998, by the meridian scanning photometer and the all-sky camera at Ny Ålesund, Svalbard. Simultaneous SuperDARN HF radar measurements permitted the study of the associated ionospheric velocity pattern. A good general agreement is observed between the location and movement of velocity enhancements (flow channels) and the PMAFs. Clear signatures of equatorward flow were detected in the vicinity of PMAFs. This flow is believed to be the signature of a return flow outside the reconnected flux tube, as predicted by the Southwood model. The simulated signatures of this model reproduce globally the measured signatures, and differences with the experimental data can be explained by the simplifications of the model. Proposed schemes of the flow modification due to the presence of several flow channels and the modification of cusp and region 1 field-aligned currents at the time of sporadic reconnection events are shown to fit well with the observations.Key words: Ionosphere (auroral ionosphere; plasma convection) - Magnetospheric physics (magnetopause; cusp and boundary layers)

The wild-type human phenylalanine hydroxylase exhibits two transitions in thermograms that can be assigned to the denatured enzyme domain as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry. Data suggest that the thermal denaturation of the enzyme occurs in three ways, unfloding of the four regulatory domains and two catalytic domains and irreversible protein denaturation.
