1. Mechanical Model for a Full Fusion Tokamak Enabled by Supercomputing

Abstract: Determining stress and strain in a component of a fusion power plant involves defining boundary conditions for the mechanical equilibrium equations, implying the availability of a full reactor model for defining those conditions. To address this fundamental challenge of reactor design, a finite element method (FEM) model for the Mega-Ampere Spherical Tokamak Upgrade (MAST-U) fusion tokamak, operating at the Culham Campus of UKAEA, has been developed and applied to assess mechanical deformations, strain, and stress in the full tokamak structure, taken as a proxy for a fusion power plant. The model, handling 127 million finite elements using about 800 processors in parallel, illustrates the level of fidelity of structural simulations of a complex nuclear device made possible by the modern supercomputing systems. The model predicts gravitational and atmospheric pressure-induced deformations in broad agreement with observations, and enables computing the spectrum of acoustic vibrations of a tokamak, arising from mechanical disturbances like an earthquake or a plasma disruption. We introduce the notion of the density of stress to characterise the distribution of stress in the entire solid body of the tokamak, and to predict the magnitude and locations of stress concentrations. The model enables defining computational requirements for simulating a whole operating fusion power plant, and provides a digital foundation for the assessment of reactor performance as well as for specifying the relevant materials testing programme.

2. Linear Jamming Bandits: Learning to Jam 5G-based Coded Communications Systems

Abstract: We study jamming of an OFDM-modulated signal which employs forward error correction coding. We extend this to leverage reinforcement learning with a contextual bandit to jam a 5G-based system implementing some aspects of the 5G protocol. This model introduces unreliable reward feedback in the form of ACK/NACK observations to the jammer to understand the effect of how imperfect observations of errors can affect the jammer's ability to learn. 3. Rigidity transitions in anisotropic networks happen in multiple steps

Abstract: We study how the rigidity transition in a triangular lattice changes as a function of anisotropy by preferentially filling bonds on the lattice in one direction. We discover that the onset of rigidity in anisotropic spring networks arises in at least two steps, reminiscent of the two-step melting transition in two dimensional crystals. In particular, our simulations demonstrate that the percolation of stress-supporting bonds happens at different critical volume fractions along different directions. By examining each independent component of the elasticity tensor, we determine universal exponents and develop universal scaling functions to analyze isotropic rigidity percolation as a multicritical point. We expect that these results will be important for elucidating the underlying mechanical phase transitions governing the properties of biological materials ranging from the cytoskeletons of cells to the extracellular networks of tissues such as tendon where the networks are often preferentially aligned., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures

4. Evolution of radiation profiles in a strongly baffled divertor on MAST Upgrade

Abstract: Plasma detachment involves interactions of the plasma with impurities and neutral particles, leading to significant losses of plasma power, momentum, and particles. Accurate mapping of plasma emissivity in the divertor and X-point region is essential for assessing the relationship between particle flux and radiative detachment. The recently validated InfraRed Video Bolometer (IRVB) diagnostic, in MAST-U enables this mapping with higher spatial resolution than more established methods like resistive bolometers. In previous preliminary work, the evolution of radiative detachment was characterised in L-mode (power entering the scrape-off layer, PSOL ~0.4MW). With a conventional divertor the inner leg consistently detached ahead of the outer leg, and radiative detachment preceded particle flux detachment. This work presents results also from the third MAST-U experimental campaign, fuelled from the low field side instead of the high field side, including Ohmic and beam heated L-mode shots (with a power exiting the core up to PSOL ~1-1.5MW). The radiation peak moves upstream from the target at lower upstream densities than the ion target flux roll-over (typically considered the detachment onset), while the inner leg detaches before the outer one. The movement of the radiation is in partial agreement with the expectations from the DLS model, predicting a sudden shift from the target to the X-point. The energy confinement is found to be related to detachment, but there seems to be some margin between the radiation on the inner leg reaching the X-point and confinement being affected, a beneficial characteristic if it could be extrapolated to future reactors. For increasing PSOL the particle flux roll over is almost unaffected, while radiative detachment occurs at higher density in both legs, but much higher on the outer, suggesting an uneven distribution of the power exiting the core., Comment: Submitted to Nuclear Materials and Energy

5. Anti-seizure medication load is not correlated with early termination of seizure spread

Abstract: Anti-seizure medications (ASMs) are the mainstay of treatment for epilepsy, yet their effect on seizure spread is not fully understood. Higher ASM doses have been associated with shorter and less severe seizures. Our objective was to test if this effect was due to limiting seizure spread through early termination of otherwise unchanged seizures. We retrospectively examined intracranial EEG (iEEG) recordings in 15 subjects that underwent ASM tapering during pre-surgical monitoring. We estimated ASM plasma concentrations based on pharmaco-kinetic modelling. In each subject, we identified seizures that followed the same onset and initial spread patterns, but some seizures terminated early (truncated seizures), and other seizures continued to spread (continuing seizures). We compared ASM concentrations at the times of truncated seizures and continuing seizures. We found no substantial difference between ASM concentrations when truncated vs. continuing seizures occurred (Mean difference = 4%, sd = 29%, p=0.6). Our results indicate that ASM did not appear to halt established seizures in this cohort. Further research is needed to understand how ASM may modulate seizure duration and severity.

6. Lightning declines over shipping lanes following regulation of fuel sulfur emissions

Abstract: Aerosol interactions with clouds represent a significant uncertainty in our understanding of the Earth system. Deep convective clouds may respond to aerosol perturbations in several ways that have proven difficult to elucidate with observations. Here, we leverage the two busiest maritime shipping lanes in the world, which emit aerosol particles and their precursors into an otherwise relatively clean tropical marine boundary layer, to make headway on the influence of aerosol on deep convective clouds. The recent seven-fold change in allowable fuel sulfur by the International Maritime Organization allows us to test the sensitivity of the lightning to changes in ship plume aerosol size distributions. We find that, across a range of atmospheric thermodynamic conditions, the previously documented enhancement of lightning over the shipping lanes has fallen by over 40\%. The enhancement is therefore at least partially aerosol-mediated, a conclusion that is supported by observations of droplet number at cloud base, which show a similar decline over the shipping lane. These results have fundamental implications for our understanding of aerosol-cloud interactions, suggesting that deep convective clouds are impacted by the aerosol number distribution in the remote marine environment.

8. Closed-loop underwater soft robotic foil shape control using flexible e-skin

Abstract: The use of soft robotics for real-world underwater applications is limited, even more than in terrestrial applications, by the ability to accurately measure and control the deformation of the soft materials in real time without the need for feedback from an external sensor. Real-time underwater shape estimation would allow for accurate closed-loop control of soft propulsors, enabling high-performance swimming and manoeuvring. We propose and demonstrate a method for closed-loop underwater soft robotic foil control based on a flexible capacitive e-skin and machine learning which does not necessitate feedback from an external sensor. The underwater e-skin is applied to a highly flexible foil undergoing deformations from 2% to 9% of its camber by means of soft hydraulic actuators. Accurate set point regulation of the camber is successfully tracked during sinusoidal and triangle actuation routines with an amplitude of 5% peak-to-peak and 10-second period with a normalised RMS error of 0.11, and 2% peak-to-peak amplitude with a period of 5 seconds with a normalised RMS error of 0.03. The tail tip deflection can be measured across a 30 mm (0.15 chords) range. 9. The Enactment of Distributed Leadership in Secondary Schools in Aotearoa New Zealand

Abstract: School leaders have a significant impact on student outcomes; however, there has been a shift from viewing school leadership as the actions of an individual, to seeing leadership as a collaborative endeavour, including in Aotearoa New Zealand. The traditional heroic model of leadership is making way for a new leadership paradigm which considers leadership as the actions of many rather than the few and promotes the construct of distributed leadership. This research study, using an interpretive qualitative design, focused on the experiences of secondary school principals in their attempts to distribute leadership. Moreover, the study aimed to connect principal's interpretations of distributed leadership with their practice of the construct. The findings highlight the challenges in defining and enacting distributed leadership. Nine recommendations for principals who are considering distributed leadership as a tool for effectively distributing leadership and improving student outcomes are presented. These are designed to provide principals with a starting point when considering distributed leadership and to stimulate further discussion on the topic.

10. Lattice distortion leads to glassy thermal transport in crystalline Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_6$Cl$_3$

Abstract: The glassy thermal conductivities observed in crystalline inorganic perovskites such as Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_6$Cl$_3$ is perplexing and lacking theoretical explanations. Here, we first experimentally measure such its thermal transport behavior from 20~K to 300~K, after synthesizing Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_6$Cl$_3$ single crystals. Using path-integral molecular dynamics simulations driven by machine learning potentials, we reveal that Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_6$Cl$_3$ has large lattice distortions at low temperatures, which may be related to the large atomic size mismatch. Employing the regularized Wigner thermal transport theory, we reproduce the experimental thermal conductivities based on lattice-distorted structures. This study thus provides a framework for predicting and understanding glassy thermal transport in materials with strong lattice disorder.

11. Universal scaling solution for a rigidity transition: renormalization group flows near the upper critical dimension

Abstract: Rigidity transitions induced by the formation of system-spanning disordered rigid clusters, like the jamming transition, can be well-described in most physically relevant dimensions by mean-field theories. A dynamical mean-field theory commonly used to study these transitions, the coherent potential approximation (CPA), shows logarithmic corrections in $2$ dimensions. By solving the theory in arbitrary dimensions and extracting the universal scaling predictions, we show that these logarithmic corrections are a symptom of an upper critical dimension $d_{u}=2$, below which the critical exponents are modified. We recapitulate Ken Wilson's phenomenology of the $(4-\epsilon)$-dimensional Ising model, but with the upper critical dimension reduced to $2$. We interpret this using normal form theory as a transcritical bifurcation in the RG flows and extract the universal nonlinear coefficients to make explicit predictions for the behavior near $2$ dimensions. This bifurcation is driven by a variable that is dangerously irrelevant in all dimensions $d>2$ which incorporates the physics of long-wavelength phonons and low-frequency elastic dissipation. Abstract: The Simons Observatory (SO) is a cosmic microwave background experiment composed of three 0.42 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT) in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The Large Aperture Telescope Receiver (LATR) was integrated into the LAT in August 2023; however, because mirrors were not yet installed, the LATR optical chain was capped at the 4K stage. In this dark configuration we are able to characterize many elements of the instrument without contributions from atmospheric noise. Here we show this noise is below the required upper limit and its features are well described with a simple noise model. Maps produced using this noise model have properties that are in good agreement with the white noise levels of our dark data. Additionally, we show that our nominal scan strategy has a minimal effect on the noise when compared to the noise when the telescope is stationary

13. Differentiable Cost-Parameterized Monge Map Estimators

Abstract: Within the field of optimal transport (OT), the choice of ground cost is crucial to ensuring that the optimality of a transport map corresponds to usefulness in real-world applications. It is therefore desirable to use known information to tailor cost functions and hence learn OT maps which are adapted to the problem at hand. By considering a class of neural ground costs whose Monge maps have a known form, we construct a differentiable Monge map estimator which can be optimized to be consistent with known information about an OT map. In doing so, we simultaneously learn both an OT map estimator and a corresponding adapted cost function. Through suitable choices of loss function, our method provides a general approach for incorporating prior information about the Monge map itself when learning adapted OT maps and cost functions.

14. Progressive Entropic Optimal Transport Solvers

Abstract: Optimal transport (OT) has profoundly impacted machine learning by providing theoretical and computational tools to realign datasets. In this context, given two large point clouds of sizes $n$ and $m$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, entropic OT (EOT) solvers have emerged as the most reliable tool to either solve the Kantorovich problem and output a $n\times m$ coupling matrix, or to solve the Monge problem and learn a vector-valued push-forward map. While the robustness of EOT couplings/maps makes them a go-to choice in practical applications, EOT solvers remain difficult to tune because of a small but influential set of hyperparameters, notably the omnipresent entropic regularization strength $\varepsilon$. Setting $\varepsilon$ can be difficult, as it simultaneously impacts various performance metrics, such as compute speed, statistical performance, generalization, and bias. In this work, we propose a new class of EOT solvers (ProgOT), that can estimate both plans and transport maps. We take advantage of several opportunities to optimize the computation of EOT solutions by dividing mass displacement using a time discretization, borrowing inspiration from dynamic OT formulations, and conquering each of these steps using EOT with properly scheduled parameters. We provide experimental evidence demonstrating that ProgOT is a faster and more robust alternative to standard solvers when computing couplings at large scales, even outperforming neural network-based approaches. 15. Contrasting Multiple Representations with the Multi-Marginal Matching Gap

Abstract: Learning meaningful representations of complex objects that can be seen through multiple ($k\geq 3$) views or modalities is a core task in machine learning. Existing methods use losses originally intended for paired views, and extend them to $k$ views, either by instantiating $\tfrac12k(k-1)$ loss-pairs, or by using reduced embeddings, following a \textit{one vs. average-of-rest} strategy. We propose the multi-marginal matching gap (M3G), a loss that borrows tools from multi-marginal optimal transport (MM-OT) theory to simultaneously incorporate all $k$ views. Given a batch of $n$ points, each seen as a $k$-tuple of views subsequently transformed into $k$ embeddings, our loss contrasts the cost of matching these $n$ ground-truth $k$-tuples with the MM-OT polymatching cost, which seeks $n$ optimally arranged $k$-tuples chosen within these $n\times k$ vectors. While the exponential complexity $O(n^k$) of the MM-OT problem may seem daunting, we show in experiments that a suitable generalization of the Sinkhorn algorithm for that problem can scale to, e.g., $k=3\sim 6$ views using mini-batches of size $64~\sim128$. 16. Expected Gamma-Ray Burst Detection Rates and Redshift Distributions for the BlackCAT CubeSat Mission

Abstract: We report the results of an extensive set of simulations exploring the sensitivity of the BlackCAT CubeSat to long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). BlackCAT is a NASA APRA-funded CubeSat mission for the detection and real-time sub-arcminute localization of high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 3.5$) GRBs. Thanks to their luminous and long-lived afterglow emissions, GRBs are uniquely valuable probes of high-redshift star-forming galaxies and the intergalactic medium. In addition, each detected GRB with a known redshift serves to localize a region of high-redshift star formation in three dimensions, enabling deep follow-on searches for host galaxies and associated local and large-scale structure. We explore two distinct models for the GRB redshift distribution and luminosity function, both consistent with \textit{Swift} observations. We find that, for either model, BlackCAT is expected to detect a mean of 42 bursts per year on-orbit, with 6.7% to 10% of these at $z>3.5$. BlackCAT bursts will be localized to $r_{90} \lesssim 55^{\prime\prime}$ precision and reported to the community within seconds. Due to the mission orbit and pointing scheme, bursts will be located in the night sky and well-placed for deep multiwavelength follow-up observations. Abstract: The Simons Observatory will map the temperature and polarization over half of the sky, at millimeter wavelengths in six spectral bands from the Atacama Desert in Chile. These data will provide new insights into the genesis, content, and history of our Universe; the astrophysics of galaxies and galaxy clusters; objects in our solar system; and time-varying astrophysical phenomena. This ambitious new instrument suite, initially comprising three 0.5 m small-aperture telescopes and one 6 m large aperture telescope, is designed using a common combination of new technologies and new implementations to realize an observatory significantly more capable than the previous generation. In this paper, we present the pre-deployment performance of the first mid-frequency "optics tube" which will be fielded on the large aperture telescope with sensitivity to the 90 and 150 GHz spectral bands. This optics tube contains lenses, filters, detectors, and readout components, all of which operate at cryogenic temperatures. It is one of seven that form the core of the large aperture telescope receiver in its initial deployment. We describe this optics tube, including details of comprehensive testing methods, new techniques for beam and passband characterization, and its measured performance. The performance metrics include beams, optical efficiency, passbands, and forecasts for the on-sky performance of the system. We forecast a sensitivity that exceeds the requirements of the large aperture telescope with greater than 30% margin in each spectral band, and predict that the instrument will realize diffraction-limited performance and the expected detector passbands.

18. Unsupervised Machine Learning Identifies Latent Ultradian States in Multi-Modal Wearable Sensor Signals

Abstract: Wearable sensors such as smartwatches have become ubiquitous in recent years, allowing the easy and continual measurement of physiological parameters such as heart rate, physical activity, body temperature, and blood glucose in an every-day setting. This multi-modal data offers the potential to identify latent states occurring across physiological measures, which may represent important bio-behavioural states that could not be observed in any single measure. Here we present an approach, utilising a hidden semi-Markov model, to identify such states in data collected using a smartwatch, electrocardiogram, and blood glucose monitor, over two weeks from a sample of 9 participants. We found 26 latent ultradian states across the sample, with many occurring at particular times of day. Here we describe some of these, as well as their association with subjective mood and time use diaries. These methods provide a novel avenue for developing insights into the physiology of everyday life.

19. Anti-seizure medication tapering is associated with delta band power reduction in a dose, region and time-dependent manner

Abstract: Anti-seizure medications (ASMs) are the primary treatment for epilepsy, yet medication tapering effects have not been investigated in a dose, region, and time-dependent manner, despite their potential impact on research and clinical practice. We examined over 3000 hours of intracranial EEG recordings in 32 subjects during long-term monitoring, of which 22 underwent concurrent ASM tapering. We estimated ASM plasma levels based on known pharmaco-kinetics of all the major ASM types. We found an overall decrease in the power of delta band activity around the period of maximum medication withdrawal in most (80%) subjects, independent of their epilepsy type or medication combination. The degree of withdrawal correlated positively with the magnitude of delta power decrease. This dose-dependent effect was strongly seen across all recorded cortical regions during daytime; but not in sub-cortical regions, or during night time. We found no evidence of differential effect in seizure onset, spiking, or pathological brain regions. The finding of decreased delta band power during ASM tapering agrees with previous literature. Our observed dose-dependent effect indicates that monitoring ASM levels in cortical regions may be feasible for applications such as medication reminder systems, or closed-loop ASM delivery systems. ASMs are also used in other neurological and psychiatric conditions, making our findings relevant to a general neuroscience and neurology audience.

Abstract: In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

21. Using Social Justice Leadership Theory to Contextualize Detracking in the COVID-19 Era

Abstract: Ten years ago, Sunnydale High School leaders worked with teachers and community members to create an international baccalaureate (IB)-for-all model to prevent racially and socioeconomically identifiable class levels. For nearly a decade, the program has been successful with stakeholders largely supporting the model. Following pandemic-related school building closures, faculty at Sunnydale High School are having trouble continuing to support students who had vastly different online school experiences. Some faculty and community members have asked the leadership to reconsider the model because they feel some students need additional support that cannot be provided in pre-IB or IB classes while maintaining high expectations for other students. The author offers learning activities through the lens of social justice leadership.

22. Health Service Utilization in Adolescents Following a First Arrest: The Role of Antisocial Behavior, Callous-Unemotional Traits, and Juvenile Justice System Processing

Abstract: Previous research indicates that youth exhibiting antisocial behavior are at risk for utilizing a disproportionate amount of health services compared to youth without these problems. The present study investigates whether being processed by the juvenile justice system and showing callous-unemotional (CU) traits independently predict health service utilization (medical and mental health service use and out-of-home placement) over and above the severity of antisocial behavior across adolescence. A total of 766 participants who had been arrested for the first time in adolescence provided data at ten appointments over a period of seven years. Results showed that self-reported antisocial behavior at the time of arrest predicted increased use of most health service use types over the next seven years (i.e. medicine prescriptions, tests for sexually transmitted infections, mental health service appointments, and out-of-home placements). All except prescription medication use remained significant when controlling for justice system processing and CU traits. Further, justice system processing added significantly to the prediction of medical service appointments. Whereas CU traits were associated with mental health service appointments and out-of-home placements, these did not remain significant when controlling for severity of antisocial behavior. These findings are consistent with prior research documenting the health care costs of antisocial behavior.

Abstract: Thermostable clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and CRISPR-associated (Cas9) enzymes could improve genome-editing efficiency and delivery due to extended protein lifetimes. However, initial experimentation demonstrated Geobacillus stearothermophilus Cas9 (GeoCas9) to be virtually inactive when used in cultured human cells. Laboratory-evolved variants of GeoCas9 overcome this natural limitation by acquiring mutations in the wedge (WED) domain that produce >100-fold-higher genome-editing levels. Cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of the wild-type and improved GeoCas9 (iGeoCas9) enzymes reveal extended contacts between the WED domain of iGeoCas9 and DNA substrates. Biochemical analysis shows that iGeoCas9 accelerates DNA unwinding to capture substrates under the magnesium-restricted conditions typical of mammalian but not bacterial cells. These findings enabled rational engineering of other Cas9 orthologs to enhance genome-editing levels, pointing to a general strategy for editing enzyme improvement. Together, these results uncover a new role for the Cas9 WED domain in DNA unwinding and demonstrate how accelerated target unwinding dramatically improves Cas9-induced genome-editing activity.

24. Automated Quantum Circuit Generation for Computing Inverse Hash Functions

Abstract: Several cryptographic systems depend upon the computational difficulty of reversing cryptographic hash functions. Robust hash functions transform inputs to outputs in such a way that the inputs cannot be later retrieved in a reasonable amount of time even if the outputs and the function that created them are known. Consequently, hash functions can be cryptographically secure, and they are employed in encryption, authentication, and other security methods. It has been suggested that such cryptographically-secure hash functions will play a critical role in the era of post-quantum cryptography (PQC), as they do in conventional systems. In this work, we introduce a procedure that leverages the principle of reversibility to generate circuits that invert hash functions. We provide a proof-of-concept implementation and describe methods that allow for scaling the hash function inversion approach. Specifically, we implement one manifestation of the algorithm as part of a more general automated quantum circuit synthesis, compilation, and optimization toolkit. We illustrate production of reversible circuits for crypto-hash functions that inherently provide the inverse of the function, and we describe data structures that increase the scalability of the hash function inversion approach., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

Abstract: High quality random numbers are necessary in the modern world. Ranging from encryption keys in cyber security to models and simulations for scientific use: it's important that these random numbers are of high quality and quickly attainable. One common solution to the generation of random numbers is that of pseudo-random number generators, or PRNGs. PRNGs generate random numbers by first quantifying some unpredictable phenomena into a number or string and feeding it into an algorithm which yields numbers randomly based on that seed. Easy places to find seeds include the user's mouse movements or the machine's uptime. These are only pseudorandom, however, as if given the same seed twice, the PRNG would generate the same 'random' output. This is great for games like Minecraft, but not so great for cybersecurity encryption key generation. Abstract: For the first time, we demonstrate the application of an inverse Compton scattering X-ray Source, driven by a laser-plasma accelerator, to image an additively manufactured component. X-rays with a mean energy of 380 keV were produced and used to image an additively manufactured part made of an Inconel (Nickel 718) alloy. Because inverse Compton scattering driven by laser-plasma acceleration produces high-energy X-rays while maintaining a focal spot size on the order of a micron, the source can provide several benefits over conventional X-ray production methods, particularly when imaging superalloy parts, with the potential to revolutionise what can be inspected.

Abstract: Physically unclonable functions (PUFs) are designed to act as device 'fingerprints.' Given an input challenge, the PUF circuit should produce an unpredictable response for use in situations such as root-of-trust applications and other hardware-level cybersecurity applications. PUFs are typically subcircuits present within integrated circuits (ICs), and while conventional IC PUFs are well-understood, several implementations have proven vulnerable to malicious exploits, including those perpetrated by machine learning (ML)-based attacks. Such attacks can be difficult to prevent because they are often designed to work even when relatively few challenge-response pairs are known in advance. Hence the need for both more resilient PUF designs and analysis of ML-attack susceptibility. Previous work has developed a PUF for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). A PIC PUF not only produces unpredictable responses given manufacturing-introduced tolerances, but is also less prone to electromagnetic radiation eavesdropping attacks than a purely electronic IC PUF. In this work, we analyze the resilience of the proposed photonic PUF when subjected to ML-based attacks. Specifically, we describe a computational PUF model for producing the large datasets required for training ML attacks; we analyze the quality of the model; and we discuss the modeled PUF's susceptibility to ML-based attacks. We find that the modeled PUF generates distributions that resemble uniform white noise, explaining the exhibited resilience to neural-network-based attacks designed to exploit latent relationships between challenges and responses. Preliminary analysis suggests that the PUF exhibits similar resilience to generative adversarial networks, and continued development will show whether more-sophisticated ML approaches better compromise the PUF and -- if so -- how design modifications might improve resilience., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Ideally, the relationship between challenges and corresponding responses is unpredictable, even if a subset of CRPs is known. Previous work developed a photonic PUF offering improved security compared to non-optical counterparts. Abstract: We present an estimate of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) detector polarization angle systematic uncertainty from optics perturbation analysis using polarization-sensitive ray tracing in CODE V optical design software. Uncertainties in polarization angle calibration in CMB measurements can limit constraints on cosmic birefringence and other cosmological parameters sensitive to polarization leakage. Our framework estimates the angle calibration systematic uncertainties from possible displacements in lens positions and orientations, and anti-reflection coating (ARC) thicknesses and refractive indices. With millimeter displacements in lens positions and percent-level perturbations in ARC thicknesses and indices from design, we find the total systematic uncertainty for three ACT detector arrays operating between 90--220 GHz to be at the tenth of degree scale. Reduced lens position and orientation uncertainties from physical measurements could lead to a reduction in the systematic uncertainty estimated with the framework presented here. 30. Careful with that Scalpel: Improving Gradient Surgery with an EMA

Abstract: Beyond minimizing a single training loss, many deep learning estimation pipelines rely on an auxiliary objective to quantify and encourage desirable properties of the model (e.g. performance on another dataset, robustness, agreement with a prior). Although the simplest approach to incorporating an auxiliary loss is to sum it with the training loss as a regularizer, recent works have shown that one can improve performance by blending the gradients beyond a simple sum; this is known as gradient surgery. We cast the problem as a constrained minimization problem where the auxiliary objective is minimized among the set of minimizers of the training loss. To solve this bilevel problem, we follow a parameter update direction that combines the training loss gradient and the orthogonal projection of the auxiliary gradient to the training gradient. In a setting where gradients come from mini-batches, we explain how, using a moving average of the training loss gradients, we can carefully maintain this critical orthogonality property. We demonstrate that our method, Bloop, can lead to much better performances on NLP and vision experiments than other gradient surgery methods without EMA.

Abstract: This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract: Tropical cyclones are an important cause of forest disturbance, and major storms caused severe structural damage and elevated tree mortality in coastal tropical forests. Model capabilities that can be used to understand post-hurricane forest recovery are still limited. We use a vegetation demography model, the Functionally Assembled Terrestrial Ecosystem Simulator, coupled with the Energy Exascale Earth System Model Land Model (ELM-FATES) to study the processes and the key factors regulating post-hurricane forest recovery. We implemented hurricane-induced forest damage, including defoliation, structural biomass reduction, and tree mortality, performed ensemble model simulations, and used random forest feature importance. For the simulation in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico, we identified factors controlling the post-hurricane forest recovery, and quantified the sensitivity of key model parameters to the post-hurricane forest recovery. The results indicate a tendency for the Bisley forests to shift toward the light demanding plant functional type (PFT) when the pre-hurricane biomass between the light demanding and shade tolerant PFTs is nearly equal and forests experience hurricane disturbance with mortality >60% for both the two PFTs. Under more realistic conditions where the shade tolerant PFT is initially dominant, mortality >80% is required for a shift toward dominance of the light demanding PFT at Bisley. Hurricane mortality and background mortality are the two major factors regulating post-hurricane forest recovery in simulations. This research improves understanding of the ELM-FATES model behavior associated with hurricane disturbance and provides guidance for dynamic vegetation model development in representing hurricane induced forest damage with varied intensities.

Utilizing real-world data from the financial services industry, we demonstrate the practicality of Shapley Value Regression in evaluating individual partner contributions. Although structured in-field testing along with cooperative game theory is most accurate, it can often be highly complex and expensive to conduct. Shapley Value Regression is thus a more feasible approach to disentangle the influence of each marketing partner within a marketing channel. Abstract: Many people with hearing loss struggle to comprehend speech in crowded auditory scenes, even when they are using hearing aids. Future hearing technologies which can identify the focus of a listener's auditory attention, and selectively amplify that sound alone, could improve the experience that this patient group has with their hearing aids. In this work, we present the results of our experiments with an ultra-wearable in-ear electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring device. Participants listened to two competing speakers in an auditory attention experiment whilst their EEG was recorded. We show that typical neural responses to the speech envelope, as well as its onsets, can be recovered from such a device, and that the morphology of the recorded responses is indeed modulated by selective attention to speech. Features of the attended and ignored speech stream can also be reconstructed from the EEG recordings, with the reconstruction quality serving as a marker of selective auditory attention. Using the stimulus-reconstruction method, we show that with this device auditory attention can be decoded from short segments of EEG recordings which are of just a few seconds in duration. The results provide further evidence that ear-EEG systems offer good prospects for wearable auditory monitoring as well as future cognitively-steered hearing aids.

46. Ethical considerations for data involving human gender and sex variables

Abstract: The inclusion of human sex and gender data in statistical analysis invokes multiple considerations for data collection, combination, analysis, and interpretation. These considerations are not unique to variables representing sex and gender. However, considering the relevance of the ethical practice standards for statistics and data science to sex and gender variables is timely, with results that can be applied to other sociocultural variables. Historically, human gender and sex have been categorized with a binary system. This tradition persists mainly because it is easy, and not because it produces the best scientific information. Binary classification simplifies combinations of older and newer data sets. However, this classification system eliminates the ability for respondents to articulate their gender identity, conflates gender and sex, and also obscures potentially important differences by collapsing across valid and authentic categories. This approach perpetuates historical inaccuracy, simplicity, and bias, while also limiting the information that emerges from analyses of human data. The approach also violates multiple elements in the American Statistical Association (ASA) Ethical Guidelines for Statistical Practice. Information that would be captured with a nonbinary classification could be relevant to decisions about analysis methods and to decisions based on otherwise expert statistical work. Statistical practitioners are increasingly concerned with inconsistent, uninformative, and even unethical data collection and analysis practices. Abstract: In critical care, the specific, structured approach to patient care known as a time-limited trial has been promoted in the literature to help patients, surrogate decision makers, and clinicians navigate consequential decisions about life-sustaining therapy in the face of uncertainty. Despite promotion of the time-limited trial approach, a lack of consensus about its definition and essential elements prevents optimal clinical use and rigorous evaluation of its impact. The objectives of this American Thoracic Society Workshop Committee were to establish a consensus definition of a time-limited trial in critical care, identify the essential elements for conducting a time-limited trial, and prioritize directions for future work. We achieved these objectives through a structured search of the literature, a modified Delphi process with 100 interdisciplinary and interprofessional stakeholders, and iterative committee discussions. We conclude that a time-limited trial for patients with critical illness is a collaborative plan among clinicians and a patient and/or their surrogate decision makers to use life-sustaining therapy for a defined duration, after which the patients response to therapy informs the decision to continue care directed toward recovery, transition to care focused exclusively on comfort, or extend the trials duration. The plans 16 essential elements follow four sequential phases: consider, plan, support, and reassess. We acknowledge considerable gaps in evidence about the impact of time-limited trials and highlight a concern that if inadequately implemented, time-limited trials may perpetuate unintended harm. Future work is needed to better implement this defined, specific approach to care in practice through a person-centered equity lens and to evaluate its impact on patients, surrogates, and clinicians.

48. Decoding Envelope and Frequency-Following EEG Responses to Continuous Speech Using Deep Neural Networks

Abstract: The electroencephalogram (EEG) offers a non-invasive means by which a listener's auditory system may be monitored during continuous speech perception. Reliable auditory-EEG decoders could facilitate the objective diagnosis of hearing disorders, or find applications in cognitively-steered hearing aids. Previously, we developed decoders for the ICASSP Auditory EEG Signal Processing Grand Challenge (SPGC). These decoders aimed to solve the match-mismatch task: given a short temporal segment of EEG recordings, and two candidate speech segments, the task is to identify which of the two speech segments is temporally aligned, or matched, with the EEG segment. The decoders made use of cortical responses to the speech envelope, as well as speech-related frequency-following responses, to relate the EEG recordings to the speech stimuli. Here we comprehensively document the methods by which the decoders were developed. We extend our previous analysis by exploring the association between speaker characteristics (pitch and sex) and classification accuracy, and provide a full statistical analysis of the final performance of the decoders as evaluated on a heldout portion of the dataset. Finally, the generalisation capabilities of the decoders are characterised, by evaluating them using an entirely different dataset which contains EEG recorded under a variety of speech-listening conditions. The results show that the match-mismatch decoders achieve accurate and robust classification accuracies, and they can even serve as auditory attention decoders without additional training.

49. The mass profiles of dwarf galaxies from Dark Energy Survey lensing

Abstract: We present a novel approach to extracting dwarf galaxies from photometric data to measure their average halo mass profile with weak lensing. We characterise their stellar mass and redshift distributions with a spectroscopic calibration sample. Using the ${\sim}5000\mathrm{deg}^2$ multi-band photometry from Dark Energy Survey and redshifts from the Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA) survey with an unsupervised machine learning method, we select a low-mass galaxy sample spanning redshifts $z{<}0.3$ and divide it into three mass bins. From low to high median mass, the bins contain [146 420, 330 146, 275 028] galaxies and have median stellar masses of $\log_{10}(M_*/M_{\odot})= [8.52^{+0.57}_{-0.76}, 9.02^{+0.50}_ {-0.64}, 9.49^{+0.50}_{-0.58}]$. We measure the stacked excess surface mass density profiles, $\Delta\Sigma(R)$, of these galaxies using galaxy--galaxy lensing with a signal-to-noise of [14, 23, 28]. Through a simulation-based forward-modelling approach, we fit the measurements to constrain the stellar-to-halo mass relation and find the median halo mass of these samples to be $\log_{10}(M_{\rm halo}/M_{\odot})$ = [$10.67\substack{+0.2\\-0.4}$, $11.01\substack{+0.14 \\ -0.27}$,$11.40\substack{+0.08\\-0.15}$]. The CDM profiles are consistent with NFW profiles over scales ${\lesssim}0.15 \rm{h}^{-1}$Mpc. We find that ${\sim}20$ per cent of the dwarf galaxy sample are satellites. This is the first measurement of the halo profiles and masses of such a comprehensive, low-mass galaxy sample. 50. Incomplete resection of the icEEG seizure onset zone is not associated with post-surgical outcomes

Abstract: Delineation of seizure onset regions from EEG is important for effective surgical workup. However, it is unknown if their complete resection is required for seizure freedom, or in other words, if post-surgical seizure recurrence is due to incomplete removal of the seizure onset regions. Retrospective analysis of icEEG recordings from 63 subjects (735 seizures) identified seizure onset regions through visual inspection and algorithmic delineation. We analysed resection of onset regions and correlated this with post-surgical seizure control. Most subjects had over half of onset regions resected (70.7% and 60.5% of subjects for visual and algorithmic methods, respectively). In investigating spatial extent of onset or resection, and presence of diffuse onsets, we found no substantial evidence of association with post-surgical seizure control (all AUC<0.7, p>0.05). Seizure onset regions tends to be at least partially resected, however a less complete resection is not associated with worse post-surgical outcome. We conclude that seizure recurrence after epilepsy surgery is not necessarily a result of failing to completely resect the seizure onset zone, as defined by icEEG. Other network mechanisms must be involved, which are not limited to seizure onset regions alone.
