Abstract

Declaration of interests: All authors are current or former members of the APPTS Project Board The first author is the clinical lead for an NHS Talking Therapies service for Anxiety and Depression that is APPTS accredited and works for a Trust that has accredited all of its NHS Talking Therapies for Anxiety and Depression services This paper describes an accreditation programme for psychological therapies services. It highlights the centrality of service user involvement to the programme's design and delivery. Advantages for service users, staff, services and commissioners are outlined with feedback from different stakeholders included. Psychological therapies services need to be aware of this option to achieve accreditation from a body specifically tailored to evaluate such services. The programme is aligned to the Care Quality Commission's five domains, utilising a supportive model of peer review, through which participating services are encouraged to share good practice and learn from one another. The process revolves around the APPTS standards, which have been developed collaboratively with key stakeholders, staff from member services, and representatives with lived experience, and provide the framework for what a high-quality psychological therapies service should look like. Abstract

This article is a report of a qualitative research study into the aesthetic and spiritual dimensions of the lifelong learning practices of eight experienced educators. The research is grounded in a narrative tradition of research on teacher development where teacher learning is viewed as a creative, holistic, relational endeavour in which the personal and professional are intimately connected. It makes connections between narrative inquiry, holistic education and teacher development, and makes a contribution to the body of knowledge in teachers' knowledge/learning by demonstrating that in the experience of the study's participants, meaningful lifelong learning is an ongoing process of creating and recreating the self. Abstract

Overlay journals, a potentially overlooked model of scholarly communication, have seen a resurgence due to the increasing number of preprint repositories and preprints on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) related topics. Overlay journals at various stages of maturity were examined for unique characteristics, including whether the authors submitted their article to the journal, whether the peer reviews of the article were published by the overlay journal, and whether the overlay journals took advantage of opportunities for increased discovery. As librarians and researchers seek new, futuristic models for publishing, overlay journals are emerging as an important contribution to scholarly communication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Experiments on the fatigue of tendons have shown that cyclic loading induces failure at stresses lower than the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the tendons. The number of cycles to failure ([N.sub.f]) has been shown to be dependent upon the magnitude of the applied cyclic stress. Method of approach: Utilizing data collected by Schechtman (1995), we demonstrate that the principles of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) can be used to predict the fatigue behavior of tendons under cyclic loading for maximum stress levels that are higher than 10% of the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the tendon (the experimental results at 10% UTS did not fit with our equations). Conclusions: LEFM and other FM approaches may prove to be very valuable in advancing our understanding of damage accumulation in soft connective tissues. [DOI: 10.1115/1.1800556]

Ian K Lo,1 Matthew R Denkers,2 Kristie D More,1 Atiba A Nelson,1 Gail M Thornton,1 Richard S Boorman1 1Department of Surgery, McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health, University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, Canada; 2Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical success rate of nonoperative treatment of partial-thickness rotator cuff tears (PT-RCTs), to determine baseline clinical factors predictive of outcome of nonoperative treatment of PT-RCTs, and to determine the imaging outcome of nonoperative treatment of PT-RCTs. Patients and methods: All patients with a primary diagnosis of a PT-RCT were eligible for inclusion. Seventy-six patients (48 males, 28 females) with an average age of 52±10 years were included in the study. Patients were evaluated using a standardized format including clinical, imaging, and shoulder specific quality-of-life outcomes. Patients were assessed and treated either successfully nonoperatively or consented to undergo surgical intervention of their PT-RCT. Patients treated nonoperatively underwent follow-up by MRI arthrogram. Results: Thirty-seven patients (49%) underwent nonoperative treatment. Logistic regression analysis indicated that the baseline variables of side (dominant or nondominant side involved), onset (traumatic or atraumatic), and thickness of tendon tear (<50% or >50%) were significant predictors of outcome. At a mean 46±7 months of follow-up, nonoperatively treated patients demonstrated a mean American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score of 85.1±16.0, and a Simple Shoulder Test score of 10.0±2.5. Overall, 76% of tears treated nonoperatively did not show a tear progression on anatomic imaging. Nine patients (24%) demonstrated tear progression, of which three patients (8%) demonstrated full-thickness tearing. Conclusion: Nonoperative treatment was utilized in ~50% of the patients
