Spine in pink and gold with the titles framed by a repeat of the edible pea vine motif; top edge gilt. ; Uniform with Crowell's editions of Cape Cod, The Maine Woods, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers and Excursions also with illustrations by Johnson and cover designs by Armstrong. Frontispiece and 32 full page photogravure illustrations after photographs by Clifton Johnson. Originally published in 1854, Walden is a collection of 18 essays that record Thoreau’s experiment in simple living on the northern shore of Walden Pond in eastern Massachusetts from 1845 to 1847. Walden is viewed not only as a philosophical treatise on labor, leisure, self-reliance, and individualism but also as an influential piece of nature writing. It is considered Thoreau’s masterwork. Considered one of the great photographic interpreters of Thoreau, Johnson viewed photography in similar terms to painting and composed his photographs in that fashion -- focusing on the usual, the everyday, and perhaps even the mundane, which he turned into a visual poetry. (1) In the present book, as he did for his other books (2), Johnson presents photographs of Walden taken at approximately the same time of year as mentioned by Thoreau more than 50 years following Thoreau's experiment in intentional living at Walden. In the present binding design, Armstrong uses the common garden pea arranged as a frame for the titles to allude to Thoreau's primary support of himself during his time at Walden - a 2.5 acre plot of land that he planted with peas, corn, potatoes and turnips and harvested to eat and to sell. -- Austin Abbey Rare Books; Title vignette: author's portrait

Original paper dust jacket with titles and a reproduction of the illustration opposite page 42 in green on the front panel, and advertisements for Crowell on the rear panel and flaps. Incldes full page frontis. and 32 additional illustrations in black and white after photographs by Clifton Johnson. The author's first book chronicling the 1839 boating trip Thoreau took with his brother, John, to the New Hampshire White Mountains by way of the Concord and Merrimack rivers. Comprising both prose and poetry, the book includes romantic descriptions of the natural environment as well as thoughtful digressions on philosophy, literature, and history. Thoreau worked on the first draft during his time at Walden Pond (1845 to 1847), and completed the second draft in late 1847. He continued to expand and revise the book until its publication in 1849. Armstrong uses Cardinal Flowers (Lobelia cardinalis) in the present binding design - a native American wildflower found throughout New England - as her primary decorative motif. She likely chose it because it because Henry and John Thoreau would have seen it growing along both the Concord and Merrimack rivers, as it is commonly found in wet meadows along the rivers and streams of the Northeast. A very good + copy with a contemporary child's Christmas gift inscription to "Mother Dear"; two (½” and ¼”) white spots on the upper rear cover; slight darkening to the spine stamping as is common for books late
