Structures in the magneto-ionic medium exist across a wide range of angular sizes due to large-scale magnetic fields coherent over the Galactic spiral arms combined with small-scale fluctuations in the magnetic field and electron density resulting from energy injection processes such as supernovae. For the first time, we produce diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission Faraday rotation maps covering all spatial scales down to $3'$ resolution for Galactic magnetic field studies. These maps complement standard total and polarized intensity maps combining single-antenna and interferometric data that have been produced, for example, for the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS). Such combined maps have sensitivity to large scales from the single-antenna component, and the resolution from the interferometric component. We combine Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey High-Band-North (GMIMS-HBN) single-antenna and CGPS aperture-synthesis polarization data after spatial filtering, producing Stokes $Q$ and $U$ maps individually for the four CGPS frequency channels. We calculate Rotation Measures (RM) for all pixels using a linear fit to polarization angle versus wavelength squared. The RM maps show magnetic field structures on the full range of scales probed by this dataset. Regions of smooth polarized emission require the large-scale sensitivity of the single-antenna data to illuminate the Faraday depths, while the aperture-synthesis data reveal small-scale variability in the Faraday rotation. Despite the limitation of the 35 MHz bandwidth of the CGPS, we demonstrate that useful information on Faraday rotation structures can be obtained by combining single-antenna and aperture-synthesis data, highlighting the important synergy between future broadband interferometric and single-antenna polarization surveys., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Understanding the reliability of large language models (LLMs) has recently garnered significant attention. Given LLMs' propensity to hallucinate, as well as their high sensitivity to prompt design, it is already challenging to predict the performance of an individual LLM. However, the problem becomes more complex for compound LLM systems such as cascades, where in addition to each model's standalone performance, we must understand how the error rates of different models interact. In this paper, we present a probabilistic model for the joint performance distribution of a sequence of LLMs, which enables a framework for rationally tuning the confidence thresholds of a LLM cascade using continuous optimization. Compared to selecting confidence thresholds using grid search, our parametric Markov-copula model significantly improves runtime scaling with respect to the length of the cascade and the desired resolution of the cost-error curve, turning them from intractable into low-order polynomial. In addition, the optimal thresholds computed using our continuous optimization-based algorithm increasingly outperform those found via grid search as cascade length grows, improving the area under the cost-error curve by 1.9% on average for cascades consisting of at least three models. Overall, our Markov-copula model provides a rational basis for tuning LLM cascade performance and points to the potential of probabilistic methods in analyzing LLM systems.

Graphene spintronics offers a promising route to achieve low power 2D electronics for next generation classical and quantum computation. As device length scales are reduced to the limit of the electron mean free path, the transport mechanism crosses over to the ballistic regime. However, ballistic transport has yet to be shown in a graphene spintronic device, a necessary step towards realising ballistic spintronics. Here, we report ballistic injection of spin polarised carriers via one-dimensional contacts between magnetic nanowires and a high mobility graphene channel. The nanowire-graphene interface defines an effective constriction that confines charge carriers over a length scale smaller than that of their mean free path. This is evidenced by the observation of quantised conductance through the contacts with no applied magnetic field and a transition into the quantum Hall regime with increasing field strength. These effects occur in the absence of any constriction in the graphene itself and occur across several devices with transmission probability in the range T = 0.08 - 0.30., Comment: 4 figures

We have conducted a widefield, wideband, snapshot survey using the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) referred to as the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS). RACS covers $\approx$ 90% of the sky, with multiple observing epochs in three frequency bands sampling the ASKAP frequency range of 700 to 1800 MHz. This paper describes the third major epoch at 1655.5 MHz, RACS-high, and the subsequent imaging and catalogue data release. The RACS-high observations at 1655.5 MHz are otherwise similar to the previously released RACS-mid (at 1367.5 MHz), and were calibrated and imaged with minimal changes. From the 1493 images covering the sky up to declination $\approx$ +48$^\circ$, we present a catalogue of 2 677 509 radio sources. The catalogue is constructed from images with a median root-mean-square noise of $\approx$ 195 $\mu$Jy PSF$^{-1}$ (point-spread function) and a median angular resolution of 11.8" by 8.1". The overall reliability of the catalogue is estimated to be 99.18%, and we find a decrease in reliability as angular resolution improves. We estimate the brightness scale to be accurate to 10%, and the astrometric accuracy to be within $\approx$ 0.6" in right ascension and $\approx$ 0.7" in declination after correction of a systematic declination-dependent offset. To perform image editing based on single-view, inverse physically based rendering, we present a method combining a learning-based approach with progressive differentiable rendering. Given an image, our method leverages neural networks to predict initial material properties. Progressive differentiable rendering is then used to optimize the environment map and refine the material properties with the goal of closely matching the rendered result to the input image. We require only a single image while other inverse rendering methods based on the rendering equation require multiple views. In comparison to single-view methods that rely on neural renderers, our approach achieves more realistic light material interactions, accurate shadows, and global illumination. Furthermore, with optimized material properties and illumination, our method enables a variety of tasks, including physically based material editing, object insertion, and relighting. We also propose a method for material transparency editing that operates effectively without requiring full scene geometry. Network-based representations of fitness landscapes have grown in popularity in the past decade; this is probably because of growing interest in explainability for optimisation algorithms. Local optima networks (LONs) have been especially dominant in the literature and capture an approximation of local optima and their connectivity in the landscape. However, thus far, LONs have been constructed according to a strict definition of what a local optimum is: the result of local search. Many evolutionary approaches do not include this, however. Popular algorithms such as CMA-ES have therefore never been subject to LON analysis. Search trajectory networks (STNs) offer a possible alternative: nodes can be any search space location. However, STNs are not typically modelled in such a way that models temporal stalls: that is, a region in the search space where an algorithm fails to find a better solution over a defined period of time. In this work, we approach this by systematically analysing a special case of STN which we name attractor networks. These offer a coarse-grained view of algorithm behaviour with a singular focus on stall locations. We construct attractor networks for CMA-ES, differential evolution, and random search for 24 noiseless black-box optimisation benchmark problems. The properties of attractor networks are systematically explored. They are also visualised and compared to traditional LONs and STN models. We find that attractor networks facilitate insights into algorithm behaviour which other models cannot, and we advocate for the consideration of attractor analysis even for algorithms which do not include local search.

Predicting the location where a lost person could be found is crucial for search and rescue operations with limited resources. To improve the precision and efficiency of these predictions, simulated agents can be created to emulate the behavior of the lost person. Within this study, we introduce an innovative agent-based model designed to replicate diverse psychological profiles of lost persons, allowing these agents to navigate real-world landscapes while making decisions autonomously without the need for location-specific training. The probability distribution map depicting the potential location of the lost person emerges through a combination of Monte Carlo simulations and mobility-time-based sampling. Validation of the model is achieved using real-world Search and Rescue data to train a Gaussian Process model. This allows generalization of the data to sample initial starting points for the agents during validation. Comparative analysis with historical data showcases promising outcomes relative to alternative methods. This work introduces a flexible agent that can be employed in search and rescue operations, offering adaptability across various geographical locations.

This paper presents version 3.0 of the Human Evaluation Datasheet (HEDS). This update is the result of our experience using HEDS in the context of numerous recent human evaluation experiments, including reproduction studies, and of feedback received. Our main overall goal was to improve clarity, and to enable users to complete the datasheet more consistently and comparably. Neonates in intensive care require continuous monitoring. Current measurement devices are limited for long-term use due to the fragility of newborn skin and the interference of wires with medical care and parental interactions. Camera-based vital sign monitoring has the potential to address these limitations and has become of considerable interest in recent years due to the absence of physical contact between the recording equipment and the neonates, as well as the introduction of low-cost devices. We present a novel system to capture vital signs while offering clinical insights beyond current technologies using a single RGB-D camera. Heart rate and oxygen saturation were measured using colour and infrared signals with mean average errors (MAE) of 7.69 bpm and 3.37%, respectively. Using the depth signals, an MAE of 4.83 breaths per minute was achieved for respiratory rate. Tidal volume measurements were obtained with a MAE of 0.61 mL. Flow-volume loops can also be calculated from camera data, which have applications in respiratory disease diagnosis. Our system demonstrates promising capabilities for neonatal monitoring, augmenting current clinical recording techniques to potentially improve outcomes for neonates.

Biometric systems, while offering convenient authentication, often fall short in providing rigorous security assurances. A primary reason is the ad-hoc design of protocols and components, which hinders the establishment of comprehensive security proofs. This paper introduces a formal framework for constructing secure and privacy-preserving biometric systems. By leveraging the principles of universal composability, we enable the modular analysis and verification of individual system components. This approach allows us to derive strong security and privacy properties for the entire system, grounded in well-defined computational assumptions.

We obtain CO(1-0) molecular gas measurements with ATCA on a sample of 43 spectroscopically confirmed H$\alpha$ emitters in the Spiderweb protocluster at $z=2.16$ and investigate the relation between their star formation and cold gas reservoirs as a function of environment. We achieve a CO(1-0) detection rate of $\sim23\pm12\%$ with 10 dual CO(1-0) and H$\alpha$ detections at $10<\log M_{*}/M_\odot<11.5$. In addition, we obtain upper limits for the remaining sources. In terms of total gas fractions ($F_{gas}$), our sample is divided into two different regimes with a steep transition at $\log M_{*}/M_\odot\approx10.5$. Galaxies below that threshold have gas fractions that in some cases are close to unity, indicating that their gas reservoir has been replenished by inflows from the cosmic web. However, objects at $\log M_{*}/M_\odot>10.5$ display significantly lower gas fractions and are dominated by AGN (12 out of 20). Stacking results yield $F_{gas}\approx0.55$ for massive emitters excluding AGN, and $F_{gas}\approx0.35$ when examining only AGN candidates. The mechanical competence and suturing ability of collagen-based membranes are paramount in Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) therapy, to ensure damage-free implantation, fixation and space maintenance in vivo. However, contact with the biological medium can induce swelling of collagen molecules, yielding risks of membrane sinking into the bone defect, early loss of barrier function, and irreversibly compromised clinical outcomes. To address these challenges, this study investigates the effect of the crosslinked network architecture on both mechanical and suture-holding properties of a new atelocollagen (AC) membrane. UV-cured networks were obtained via either single functionalisation of AC with 4-vinylbenzyl chloride (4VBC) or sequential functionalisation of AC with both 4VBC and methacrylic anhydride (MA). The wet-state compression modulus (Ec), Atomic Force Microscopy elastic modulus (EAFM) and swelling ratio (SR) were significantly affected by the UV-cured network architecture, leading up to a three-fold reduction in SR, and about two-fold increase in both Ec and EAFM, in the sequentially functionalised, compared to the single-functionalised, samples. Electron microscopy, dimensional analysis and compression testing revealed the direct impact of the ethanol series dehydration process on membrane microstructure, yielding densification of the freshly synthesised porous samples and a pore-free microstructure with increased Ec. Noteworthy, the single-functionalised, but not the sequentially functionalised, samples displayed higher suture retention strength in both the dry state and following 1 hour in Phosphate Buffered Saline (PBS), compared to Bio-Gide(r). Air-sea exchange processes have been identified as essential for both short- and long-term atmospheric and ocean forecasts. The two phases of the fluid layer covering our planet interact across a vast range of scales that we need to explore to achieve a better understanding of the exchange processes. While satellites provide a distributed large-scale view of the sea surface situation, highly detailed measurements, e.g., from oceanographic towers, are necessarily local. The required intermediate solution (i.e., data that are both accurate and distributed) can be provided by swarms of miniature surface buoys. As size, weight, and cost are reduced, these can be deployed in large numbers to investigate specific processes that are at present only crudely parameterized in our models as a result of scarcity of good measurements. Perhaps the most crucial process is white-capping in stormy conditions, where air-sea exchanges are enhanced by one or two orders of magnitude. Other applications include wave-current interactions, wave-ice interactions, and plunging breakers in the coastal zone. Following a dedicated workshop, we summarize here the main findings and possibilities derived from the different approaches, and summarize the state of the art for a selection of miniature buoys. We list the solutions presented at the workshop, as well as other similar buoys, with their main characteristics and range of application. We describe the various possibilities of practical use and the scientific and engineering problems to be solved. Looking to the future, we also point out where the present technological improvements are leading to.

Language models (LMs) can exhibit human-like behaviour, but it is unclear how to describe this behaviour without undue anthropomorphism. We formalise a behaviourist view of LM character traits: qualities such as truthfulness, sycophancy, or coherent beliefs and intentions, which may manifest as consistent patterns of behaviour. Our theory is grounded in empirical demonstrations of LMs exhibiting different character traits, such as accurate and logically coherent beliefs, and helpful and harmless intentions. We find that the consistency with which LMs exhibit certain character traits varies with model size, fine-tuning, and prompting. In addition to characterising LM character traits, we evaluate how these traits develop over the course of an interaction. We find that traits such as truthfulness and harmfulness can be stationary, i.e., consistent over an interaction, in certain contexts, but may be reflective in different contexts, meaning they mirror the LM's behavior in the preceding interaction. Malicious domains are part of the landscape of the internet but are becoming more prevalent and more dangerous to both companies and individuals. They can be hosted on variety of technologies and serve an array of content, ranging from Malware, command and control, and complex Phishing sites that are designed to deceive and expose. Tracking, blocking and detecting such domains is complex, and very often involves complex allow or deny list management or SIEM integration with open-source TLS fingerprinting techniques. Many fingerprint techniques such as JARM and JA3 are used by threat hunters to determine domain classification, but with the increase in TLS similarity, particularly in CDNs, they are becoming less useful. The aim of this paper is to adapt and evolve open-source TLS fingerprinting techniques with increased features to enhance granularity, and to produce a similarity mapping system that enables the tracking and detection of previously unknown malicious domains. This is done by enriching TLS fingerprints with HTTP header data and producing a fine grain similarity visualisation that represented high dimensional data using MinHash and local sensitivity hashing. Influence was taken from the Chemistry domain, where the problem of high dimensional similarity in chemical fingerprints is often encountered. An enriched fingerprint was produced which was then visualised across three separate datasets. The results were analysed and evaluated, with 67 previously unknown malicious domains being detected based on their similarity to known malicious domains and nothing else. The similarity mapping technique produced demonstrates definite promise in the arena of early detection of Malware and Phishing domains.

Deploying large language models in production requires simultaneous attention to efficiency and risk control. Prior work has shown the possibility to cut costs while maintaining similar accuracy, but has neglected to focus on risk control. By contrast, here we present hierarchical chains with multi-level abstention (HCMA), which use model-intrinsic uncertainty to delegate queries along the LLM intelligence hierarchy, enabling training-free model switching based solely on black-box API calls. Our framework presents novel trade-offs between efficiency and risk. For example, deploying HCMA on MMLU cuts the error rate of Llama3 405B by 30% when the model is allowed to abstain on 20% of the queries. To calibrate HCMA for optimal performance, our approach uses data-efficient logistic regressions (based on a simple nonlinear feature transformation), which require only 50 or 100 labeled examples to achieve excellent calibration error (ECE), cutting ECE by 50% compared to naive Platt scaling. On free-form generation tasks, we find that chain-of-thought is ineffectual for selective prediction, whereas zero-shot prompting drives error to 0% on TruthfulQA at high abstention rates. As LLMs are increasingly deployed across computing environments with different capabilities (such as mobile, laptop, and cloud), our framework paves the way towards maintaining deployment efficiency while putting in place sharp risk controls., Comment: 10 pages

High-performance programmable silicon photonic circuits are considered to be a critical part of next generation architectures for optical processing, photonic quantum circuits and neural networks. Low-loss optical phase change materials (PCMs) offer a promising route towards non-volatile free-form control of light. Here, we exploit direct-write digital patterning of waveguides using layers of the PCM Sb$_2$Se$_3$ with a thickness of up to 100 nm, demonstrating the ability to strongly increase the effect per pixel compared to previous implementations where much thinner PCM layers were used. We exploit the excellent refractive index matching between Sb$_2$Se$_3$ and silicon to achieve a low-loss hybrid platform for programmable photonics. A five-fold reduction in modulation length of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is achieved compared to previous work using thin-film Sb$_2$Se$_3$ devices, decreased to 5 $\mu$m in this work. Application of the thicker PCM layers in direct-write digital programming of a multimode interferometer (MMI) shows a three-fold reduction of the number of programmed pixels to below 10 pixels per device. The demonstrated scaling of performance with PCM layer thickness is important for establishing the optimum working range for hybrid silicon-PCM devices and holds promise for achieving ultracompact programmable photonic circuits., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Purpose: Demonstrate quantitative characterization of 3D patient-specific absorbed dose distributions using Haralick texture analysis and interpret measures in terms of underlying physics and radiation dosimetry. Methods: Retrospective analysis is performed for 137 patients who underwent permanent implant prostate brachytherapy using two simulation conditions: ``TG186'' (realistic tissues including 0-3.8% intraprostatic calcifications; interseed attenuation) and ``TG43'' (water-model; no interseed attenuation). Haralick features (homogeneity, contrast, correlation, local homogeneity, entropy) are calculated using the original Haralick formalism, and a modified approach designed to reduce grey-level quantization sensitivity. Trends in textural features are compared to clinical dosimetric measures (D90; minimum absorbed dose to the hottest 90% of a volume) and changes in patient target volume % intraprostatic calcifications by volume (%IC). Results: Both original and modified measures quantify the spatial differences in absorbed dose distributions. Strong correlations between differences in textural measures calculated under TG43 and TG186 conditions and %IC are observed for all measures. For example, differences between measures of contrast and correlation increase and decrease respectively as patients with higher levels of %IC are evaluated, reflecting the large differences across adjacent voxels (higher dose in voxels with calcification) when calculated under TG186 conditions. Conversely, the D90 metric is relatively weakly correlated with textural measures, as it generally does not characterize the spatial distribution of absorbed dose. Conclusion: patient-specific 3D dose distributions may be quantified using Haralick analysis, and trends may be interpreted in terms of fundamental physics.

To evaluate the safety and usefulness of deployment protocols for untrusted AIs, AI Control uses a red-teaming exercise played between a protocol designer and an adversary. This paper introduces AI-Control Games, a formal decision-making model of the red-teaming exercise as a multi-objective, partially observable, stochastic game. We also introduce methods for finding optimal protocols in AI-Control Games, by reducing them to a set of zero-sum partially observable stochastic games. We apply our formalism to model, evaluate and synthesise protocols for deploying untrusted language models as programming assistants, focusing on Trusted Monitoring protocols, which use weaker language models and limited human assistance. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of our formalism by showcasing improvements over empirical studies in existing settings, evaluating protocols in new settings, and analysing how modelling assumptions affect the safety and usefulness of protocols., Comment: 7 pages, with appendices

Two primary ways to change LLM behavior are prompting and weight updates (e.g., fine-tuning). Prompting LLMs is simple and effective, specifying the desired changes explicitly in natural language, whereas weight updates provide more expressive and permanent behavior changes, specified implicitly via training on large datasets. We present a technique for "baking" prompts into the weights of an LLM. Prompt Baking converts a prompt $u$ and initial weights $\theta$ to a new set of weights $\theta_u$ such that new "baked" LLM behaves like the original prompted LLM. Mathematically, we minimize the KL divergence between $P_\theta(\cdot | u)$ and $P_{\theta_u}(\cdot)$, where $P$ is the LLM's probability distribution over token sequences. Across all our experiments, we find prompts can be readily baked into weight updates. Baking chain-of-thought prompts improves zero-shot performance on GSM8K, ASDiv, MBPP, ARC-Easy, ARC-Challenge, and CommonsenseQA benchmarks. Baking news headlines directly updates an LLM's knowledge. And baking instructions & personas alleviates "prompt forgetting" over long sequences. Furthermore, stopping baking early creates "half-baked" models, continuously scaling prompt strength. Baked models retain their sensitivity to further prompting and baking, including re-prompting with the baked-in prompt. Surprisingly, the re-prompted models yield further performance gains in instruction following, as well as math reasoning and coding benchmarks. Taking re-prompting and re-baking to the limit yields a form of iterative self-improvement we call Prompt Pursuit, and preliminary results on instruction following exhibit dramatic performance gains. Finally, we discuss implications for AI safety, continuous model updating, enhancing real-time learning capabilities in LLM-based agents, and generating more stable AI personas., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures

Motor-driven cytoskeletal remodeling in cellular systems can often be accompanied by a diffusive-like effect at local scales, but distinguishing the contributions of the ordering process, such as active contraction of a network, from this active diffusion is difficult to achieve. Using light-dimerizable kinesin motors to spatially control the formation and contraction of a microtubule network, we deliberately photobleach a grid pattern onto the filament network serving as a transient and dynamic coordinate system to observe the deformation and translation of the remaining fluorescent squares of microtubules. We find that the network contracts at a rate set by motor speed but is accompanied by a diffusive-like spread throughout the bulk of the contracting network with effective diffusion constant two orders of magnitude lower than that for a freely-diffusing microtubule. We further find that on micron scales, the diffusive timescale is only a factor of approximately 3 slower than that of advection regardless of conditions, showing that the global contraction and long-time relaxation from this diffusive behavior are both motor-driven but exhibit local competition within the network bulk., Comment: 8 page manuscript, 6 figures, 43 page SI

The high incidence of irreproducible research has led to urgent appeals for transparency and equitable practices in open science. For the scientific disciplines that rely on computationally intensive analyses of large data sets, a granular understanding of the analysis methodology is an essential component of reproducibility. This paper discusses the guiding principles of a computational reproducibility framework that enables a scientist to proactively generate a complete reproducible trace as analysis unfolds, and share data, methods and executable tools as part of a scientific publication, allowing other researchers to verify results and easily re-execute the steps of the scientific investigation.

Entropy or randomness represents a foundational security property in security-related operations, such as key generation. Key generation in turn is central to security protocols such as authentication and encryption. Physical unclonable functions (PUF) are hardware-based primitives that can serve as key generation engines in modern microelectronic devices and applications. PUFs derive entropy from manufacturing variations that exist naturally within and across otherwise identical copies of a device. However, the levels of random variations that represent entropy, which are strongly correlated to the quality of the PUF-generated bitstrings, vary from one manufacturer to another. In this paper, we evaluate entropy across a set of devices manufactured by three mainstream FPGA vendors, Xilinx, Altera and Microsemi. The devices selected for evaluation are considered low-end commercial devices to make the analysis relevant to IoT applications. The SiRF PUF is used in the evaluation, and is constructed nearly identically across the three vendor devices, setting aside minor differences that exist in certain logic element primitives used within the PUF architecture, and which have only a minor impact on our comparative analysis. The SiRF PUF uses a high-resolution time-to-digital converter (TDC) crafted from high-speed carry-chain logic embedded within each device to measure path delays in an engineered netlist of logic gates as a source of entropy. Therefore, our analysis includes an evaluation of actual path delay variation as it exists across the three device classes, as well as a statistical evaluation of the PUF-generated bitstrings. We present initial results from the Polarisation Sky Survey of the Universe's Magnetism (POSSUM), analysing 22,817 Faraday Rotation Measures (RMs) with median uncertainties of 1.2 rad m^-2 across 1,520 square degrees to study magnetised gas associated with 55 nearby galaxy groups (z less than 0.025) with halo masses between 10^12.5 and 10^14.0 M_sun. We identify two distinct gas phases: the Intragroup Medium (IGrM) within 0-2 splashback radii and the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) extending from 2 to 7 splashback radii. These phases enhance the standard deviation of residual (i.e., Galactic foreground RM-subtracted) RMs by 6.9 +/- 1.8 rad m^-2 and 4.2 +/- 1.2 rad m^-2, respectively. Estimated magnetic field strengths are several microGauss within the IGrM and 0.1-1 microGauss in the WHIM. We estimate the plasma beta in both phases and show that magnetic pressure might be more dynamically important than in the ICM of more massive clusters or sparse cosmic web filaments. Our findings indicate that "missing baryons" in the WHIM likely extend beyond the gravitational radii of group-mass halos to Mpc scales, consistent with large-scale, outflow-driven "magnetised bubbles" seen in cosmological simulations. We demonstrate that RM grids are an effective method for detecting magnetised thermal gas at galaxy group interfaces and within the cosmic web. This approach complements X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect methods, and when combined with Fast Radio Burst Dispersion Measures, data from the full POSSUM survey, comprising approximately a million RMs, will allow direct magnetic field measurements to further our understanding of baryon circulation in these environments and the magnetised universe., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. We explore Bernal bilayer graphene in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions, short-range Hund's coupling, and proximity-induced Ising spin-orbit coupling using self-consistent Hartree-Fock simulations. We show that the interplay between these three ingredients produces an intricate phase diagram comprising a multitude of symmetry-broken metallic states tunable via doping and applied displacement field. In particular, we find intervalley coherent and spin-canted ground states that may hold the key to understanding spin-orbit-enabled superconductivity observed in this platform. It is generally considered that a trustworthy autonomous planetary exploration rover must be able to operate safely and effectively within its environment. Central to trustworthy operation is the ability for the rover to recognise and diagnose abnormal behaviours during its operation. Failure to diagnose faulty behaviour could lead to degraded performance or an unplanned halt in operation. This work investigates a health monitoring method that can be used to improve the capabilities of a fault detection system for a planetary exploration rover. A suite of four metrics, named 'rover vitals', are evaluated as indicators of degradation in the rover's performance. These vitals are combined to give an overall estimate of the rover's 'health'. By comparing the behaviour of a faulty real system with a non-faulty observer, residuals are generated in terms of two high-level metrics: heading and velocity. Adaptive thresholds are applied to the residuals to enable the detection of faulty behaviour, where the adaptive thresholds are informed by the rover's perceived health. Cytoskeletal networks have a self-healing property where networks can repair defects to maintain structural integrity. However, both the mechanisms and dynamics of healing remain largely unknown. Here we report an unexplored healing mechanism in microtubule-motor networks by active crosslinking. We directly generate network cracks using a light-controlled microtubule-motor system, and observe that the cracks can self-heal. Combining theory and experiment, we find that the networks must overcome internal elastic resistance in order to heal cracks, giving rise to a bifurcation of dynamics dependent on the initial opening angle of the crack: the crack heals below a critical angle and opens up at larger angles. Simulation of a continuum model reproduces the bifurcation dynamics, revealing the importance of a boundary layer where free motors and microtubules can actively crosslink and thereby heal the crack. We also formulate a simple elastic-rod model that can qualitatively predict the critical angle, which is found to be tunable by two dimensionless geometric parameters, the ratio of the boundary layer and network width, and the aspect ratio of the network. Our results provide a new framework for understanding healing in cytoskeletal networks and designing self-healable biomaterials.

Some worry that advanced artificial agents may resist being shut down. The Incomplete Preferences Proposal (IPP) is an idea for ensuring that doesn't happen. A key part of the IPP is using a novel 'Discounted REward for Same-Length Trajectories (DREST)' reward function to train agents to (1) pursue goals effectively conditional on each trajectory-length (be 'USEFUL'), and (2) choose stochastically between different trajectory-lengths (be 'NEUTRAL' about trajectory-lengths). In this paper, we propose evaluation metrics for USEFULNESS and NEUTRALITY. We use a DREST reward function to train simple agents to navigate gridworlds, and we find that these agents learn to be USEFUL and NEUTRAL. Our results thus suggest that DREST reward functions could also train advanced agents to be USEFUL and NEUTRAL, and thereby make these advanced agents useful and shutdownable.

We report an estimation of the injected mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at energies higher than 10 EeV. The composition is inferred from an energy-dependent sky distribution of UHECR events observed by the Telescope Array surface detector by comparing it to the Large Scale Structure of the local Universe. In the case of negligible extra-galactic magnetic fields the results are consistent with a relatively heavy injected composition at E ~ 10 EeV that becomes lighter up to E ~ 100 EeV, while the composition at E > 100 EeV is very heavy. The latter is true even in the presence of highest experimentally allowed extra-galactic magnetic fields, while the composition at lower energies can be light if a strong EGMF is present. We use a new method to estimate the injected mass composition of ultrahigh cosmic rays (UHECRs) at energies higher than 10 EeV. The method is based on comparison of the energy-dependent distribution of cosmic ray arrival directions as measured by the Telescope Array experiment (TA) with that calculated in a given putative model of UHECR under the assumption that sources trace the large-scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. As we report in the companion letter, the TA data show large deflections with respect to the LSS which can be explained, assuming small extra-galactic magnetic fields (EGMF), by an intermediate composition changing to a heavy one (iron) in the highest energy bin. Here we show that these results are robust to uncertainties in UHECR injection spectra, the energy scale of the experiment and galactic magnetic fields (GMF). The assumption of weak EGMF, however, strongly affects this interpretation at all but the highest energies E > 100 EeV, where the remarkable isotropy of the data implies a heavy injected composition even in the case of strong EGMF. This result also holds if UHECR sources are as rare as $2 \times 10^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-3}$, that is the conservative lower limit for the source number density., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in PRD

Context. A thousand new magnetic candidate CP stars have been identified with LAMOST, among which about 700 prime targets have rotational modulation determined from TESS. Aims. We aim to check for the presence of a magnetic field in a subsample of these LAMOST CP stars, test the viability of the 5200 A depression used to select the mCP candidates in the LAMOST survey as a reliable indicator of magnetism, and expand on the limited database of known magnetic hot stars. The sample includes some pulsators that would be valuable targets for magneto-asteroseismology. Methods. We selected approx. 100 magnetic candidate LAMOST CP stars, presenting a depression at 5200 A in their spectrum and that also display rotational modulation in their TESS photometric lightcurves. We obtained spectropolarimetric observations of 39 targets from this sample with ESPaDOnS at CFHT. We utilise the Least Squares Deconvolution method to generate the mean profile of the Stokes V and I parameters, from which the longitudinal magnetic field strength for each target can be determined. For HD 49198, we performed more in-depth analysis to determine the polar magnetic field strength and configuration. Results. We detect fields in at least 36 of our sample of 39 targets. This success rate in detecting magnetic field (above 92%) is very high compared to the occurrence of magnetic fields in hot stars (about 10%). Four of these newly discovered magnetic stars are magnetic pulsators. In particular, we detect the strongest field around a delta Scuti star discovered to date: a 12 kG dipolar field in HD 49198. Conclusions. From our analysis, we conclude that using the 5200 A depression displayed in the spectra in combination with rotational modulation in photometric data is a very reliable method for identifying magnetic candidates in this population of stars., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

We report on an observation of the difference between northern and southern skies of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray energy spectrum with a significance of ${\sim}8\sigma$. We use measurements from the two largest experiments$\unicode{x2014}$the Telescope Array observing the northern hemisphere and the Pierre Auger Observatory viewing the southern hemisphere. Since the comparison of two measurements from different observatories introduces the issue of possible systematic differences between detectors and analyses, we validate the methodology of the comparison by examining the region of the sky where the apertures of the two observatories overlap. Although the spectra differ in this region, we find that there is only a $1.8\sigma$ difference between the spectrum measurements when anisotropic regions are removed and a fiducial cut in the aperture is applied., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

This Roadmap provides an overview of the critical role of materials in exploiting spin and topology for next-generation quantum technologies including computing, sensing, information storage and networking devices. We explore the key materials systems that support spin and topological phenomena and discuss their figures of merit. Spin and topology-based quantum technologies have several advantages over their classical, charged-based counterparts, including non-volatility, faster data processing speeds, higher integration densities and lower power consumption.
