Neisseria gonorrhoeae is one of the most common pathogens responsible for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) globally, with over 80 million annual cases worldwide [1]. In Denmark, surveillance of gonorrhoea has shown a drastic increase in cases from 2022 onwards, similar to other countries across Europe [2]. In Denmark, this has particularly been observed in the Capital region and in the Northern region of Jutland in women and heterosexual men, i.e. men who have sex with women (MSW). Here, we use national surveillance data and genomics to aid our understanding of dissemination and potential drivers of N. gonorrhoeae infections., A surge in gonorrhoea in Denmark has occurred since 2022, a 46% increase from 2021. National surveillance, leveraging mandatory reporting and epidemiological data, highlights three distinct clades linked to heterosexual transmission. Despite the rise, these exhibit high susceptibility, contrasting MSM-associated strains. Geographical hotspots and age-specific patterns further illuminate transmission dynamics. The combination of genomic and epidemiological data provides novel insights into the evolving landscape of gonorrhoea, indicating potential shifts in infection dynamics and transmissibility.

Introduction: Meat- and seafood products close to their expiry date (MSPCED) are one of the significant contributors to the growing food waste. Therefore, this study aims to investigate consumers’ attitudes and willingness to buy MSPCED. Methods: An online questionnaire was used to collect data from 400 Danish consumers. Results and discussion: Three consumer segments were identified based on their willingness to buy MSPCED: 39.8% of the participants showed a high willingness to buy MSPCED close to their expiry date (“All High”), 34.5% were selective with a high willingness to buy meat close to their expiry date but not seafood (“High meat, low seafood”), while 25.7% showed a low willingness to buy MSPCED (“All Low”). Consumers’ willingness to buy MSPCED is influenced by the perceived quality of the products, food safety, social acceptability, and price. Consumers were willing to pay a higher price for minced beef close to the expiry date when compared to cod fillets, pork cuts, and chicken breasts. However, consumers were willing to buy cod fillets with the lowest discount percentage when compared to pork cuts, minced beef, and chicken breast. The findings suggest that price reduction and discount percentage can have varying effects in influencing willingness to pay for MSPCED. This study provides valuable insights, for food waste practitioners in the retail sector, to develop effective strategies for reducing food waste by influencing consumer willingness to buy and pay for perishable products like meat and seafood.

Forest ecosystems play a crucial role in the production and protection of economic, social, and environmental values. To understand current challenges and trajectories shaping future strategies within the Nordic forest sector, it is important to map and trace past and present policy and governance developments. The core contribution of this short communication is to present an open-access database that compiles key forest-related public national policies, legislative documents, and private governance initiatives in Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway from the 19th century to the present day. To showcase the potential use of the database, we conducted a comparative appraisal of forest governance trends across Nordic countries, outlining differences and shared characteristics. We identify a shift from a highly regulated and rationalized forest management regime in the 19th and early 20th centuries towards more flexible forms of contemporary governance. This transformation comes with the growing importance of sectorial freedom with responsibility principles, but also increasing calls for forest multifunctionality. Demands for recreation, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation have intensified pressures on forest owners to provide public goods. However, the production and processing of marketable forest resources remains important to meet circular bioeconomy strategy goals. We conclude by briefly discussing the implications for strategic multifunctional use and polycentric governance of forests.

More than 700,000 tons of food are wasted annually in Denmark where dairy products are among the 10 most wasted food products. Therefore, this study aims to analyze Danish consumers’ understanding of the best-before-date label and relational patterns for different knowledge-attitude-behavior factors influencing their willingness to buy (WTB) dairy products close to the best-before-date. Respondents (n = 436) from an online survey were segmented into four segments based on (i) their frequency of purchasing and (ii) their WTB dairy products close to the best-before-date: low/low (n = 53), medium/low (n149), medium/high (n = 190), and high/high (n = 44). All four segments had a relatively high understanding of the best-before-date label (total mean score = 2.43). For the medium/high and high/high segments, drivers for buying dairy products close to the best-before-date were avoidance of food waste, reduced price, and organic certification. However, the low/low and medium/low segments refrained from purchasing dairy products close to the best-before-date due to health concerns and low-quality perception and found them unappetizing. Furthermore, there seems to be a tendency for an age-dependent pattern. Older respondents (low/low and medium/low) had a higher risk perception than the younger respondents (medium/high and high/high). Consumers’ level of risk perception and food disgust sensitivity are the actual drivers or barriers for consumers’ WTB dairy products close to the best-before-date and not their level of knowledge. The results obtained from this study contribute valuable insights into consumer values and can be crucial for developing strategies to reduce food waste in an environment where consumers make their purchasing decisions.
