Introduction: Warfighters are exposed to life-threatening injuries daily and according to the Joint Trauma System Military Clinical Practice Guideline-Global Snake Envenomation Management snakebites are a concerning threat in all theaters of operation. Snake venom is a complex mixture of toxins including phospholipases A2 (PLA2) and snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMP) that produce myotoxic, hemotoxic, and cytotoxic injuries. Antibody-based antivenom is the standard of care but new approaches including small-molecule inhibitors have gained attention in recent years. Doxycycline is an effective inhibitor of human metalloproteinases and PLA2. The enzymatic activities of 3 phylogenetically distinct snakes: Agkistrodon piscivorus, Naja kaouthia, and Daboia russelii were tested under inhibitory conditions using doxycycline., Materials and Methods: Enzymatic activity of PLA2 and SVMP was measured in N. kaouthia, D. russelii, and A. piscivorus venom alone and with doxycycline using EnzChek Phospholipase A2 and Gelatinase Assay Kits. A 1-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test was used to conduct comparative analysis. The median lethal dose of the venoms, the effective dose of doxycycline, and creatine kinase (CK) inhibition levels were measured in a murine model with adult Bagg Albino (BALB/c) mice using intramuscular injections. Median lethal and effective doses were determined using Spearman-Karber's method and a 1-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test was used to compare CK inhibition levels., Results: Phospholipases A2 activity was reduced to 1.5% to 44.0% in all 3 venoms in a dose-dependent manner using 0.32, 0.16, and 0.08 mg/mL doxycycline when compared to venom-only controls (P < .0001) (Fig. 1A). Snake venom metalloproteinases activity was reduced to 4% to 62% in all 3 venoms in a dose-dependent manner using 0.32, 0.16, and 0.08 mg/mL doxycycline (P < .0001) (Fig. 1B). The lethal dose (LD50) values of the venoms in the murine model were calculated as follows: A. piscivorus = 20.29 mg/kg (Fig. 2A), N. kaouthia = 0.38 mg/kg (Fig. 2B), and D. russelii = 7.92 mg/kg (Fig. 2C). The effective dose (ED50) of doxycycline in A. piscivorus was calculated to be 20.82 mg/kg and 72.07 mg/kg when treating D. russelii venom. No ED50 could be calculated when treating N. kaouthia venom (Fig. 3). Creatine kinase activity was significantly decreased in all 3 venoms treated with doxycycline (P < .0001) (Fig. 4)., Conclusion: Doxycycline reduced PLA2- and SVMP-related lethality, particularly in A. piscivorus envenomings and in a limited capacity with D. russelii revealing its promise as a treatment for snakebites. In addition, CK activity, a common indicator of muscle damage was inhibited in mice that received doxycycline-treated venom. The doxycycline concentrations identified in the ED50 studies correspond to 1,456 to 5,061 mg dosages for a 70 kg human. Factors including venom yield and snake species would affect the actual dosage needed. Studies into high-dose doxycycline safety and its effectiveness against several snake species is needed to fully translate its use into humans. This announcement contains the whole genome sequences of five Ackermannviridae that infect members of the Enterobacteriaceae family of bacteria. Four of the five phages were isolated using Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium as a bacterial host: AR2819, Sajous1, SilasIsHot, and FrontPhageNews. Here, the full genome sequences of 22 T1-like bacteriophages isolated from wastewater are reported. Eight (BlueShadow, Brooksby, Devorator, ElisaCorrea, Reinasaurus, SorkZaugg, Supreme284, ZeroToHero) were isolated on Citrobacter , six on Klebsiella (Chell, FairDinkum, HazelMika, Opt-817, P528, PeteCarol), and eight on Escherichia (Fulano1, Mishu, Opt-719, PhleaSolo, Punny, Poky, Phunderstruck, Sadiya).

We announce the complete genome sequences of 14 Serratia bacteriophages isolated from wastewater treatment plants. These phages define two previously undescribed types which we call the Carrot-like phage cluster (phages Carrot, BigDog, LittleDog, Niamh, Opt-148, Opt-169, PhooPhighters, Rovert, Serratianator, Stoker, Swain, and Ulliraptor) and Tlacuache-like phage cluster (Tlacuache and Opt-155).

The Enterobacteriales order is composed of Gram-negative bacteria that range from harmless symbionts to well-studied pathogens. We announce complete genome sequences of five related SO-1-like Enterobacteriales bacteriophages (also known as the Dhillonvirus genus) isolated from wastewater that infect Escherichia coli (Opt-212, Over9000, Pubbukkers, and Teewinot) or Shigella boydii (StarDew).

Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella aerogenes are Gram-negative opportunistic pathogens that are responsible for nosocomial and health care-associated infections, including urinary tract infections. Here, the full genome sequences of six Chi-like Proteus (DanisaurMW, DoubleBarrel, Inception, Jing313, and NotEvenPhaged) or Klebsiella (Phraden) bacteriophages are announced, contributing to the understanding of Chi-like phages.

Full genome sequences of five bacteriophages that were isolated from raw sewage samples and infect Enterobacteriales hosts are presented. Brookers is a P22-like Proteus phage, OddieOddie is a 9g-like Escherichia coli phage, Diencephelon is a Kp3-like Klebsiella phage, and Rgz1 and Lilpapawes are classic T4-like and T7-like virulent Proteus phages, respectively.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a pathogen responsible for significant proportions of nosocomial and health care-associated infections and is known to acquire multiple antibiotic resistance genes. Here, the genome sequences of two soil bacteriophages isolated from a red chili plantation in Indonesia are presented. The genome of vB&#95;BspS&#95;SplendidRed (42,859 bp) is highly similar to Bacillus phage Ray17 from the United States, while vB&#95;BspM&#95;MarvelLand (156,945 bp) is highly similar to Bacillus phage BC01 from South Korea., (Copyright © 2019 Handoko et al.)

Erwinia and Pantoea are closely related bacterial plant pathogens in the Gram negative Enterobacteriales order. Sixty tailed bacteriophages capable of infecting these pathogens have been completely sequenced by investigators around the world and are in the current databases, 30 of which were sequenced by our lab. These 60 were compared to 991 other Enterobacteriales bacteriophage genomes and found to be, on average, just over twice the overall average length. These Erwinia and Pantoea phages comprise 20 clusters based on nucleotide and protein sequences. Five clusters contain only phages that infect the Erwinia and Pantoea genera, the other 15 clusters are closely related to bacteriophages that infect other Enterobacteriales; however, within these clusters the Erwinia and Pantoea phages tend to be distinct, suggesting ecological niche may play a diversification role. A monomer-through-pentamer series of oligo(1,8-pyrenylene)s was synthesized using a two-step iterative synthetic strategy. The trimer, tetramer, and pentamer are mixtures of atropisomers that interconvert slowly at room temperature (as shown by variable-temperature NMR analysis). They are liquids well below room temperature, as indicated by POM, DSC and SWAXS analysis. These oligomers are highly fluorescent both in the liquid state and in dilute solution (λ F,max = 444-457 nm, φ F = 0.80) and an investigation of their photophysical properties demonstrated that delocalization plays a larger role in their excited states than it does in related pyrene-based oligomers., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Two structural isomers of (9 H -pyreno[4,5- d ]imidazol-10-yl)-benzaldehyde, with para and meta substitution patterns, were synthesized by condensation of 4,5-pyrenedione with terephthalaldehyde and isophthalaldehyde, respectively. These new pyrenoimidazole derivatives were characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry to elucidate their structural, solid-state packing, and electronic properties. Interactions of these compounds with fluoride anions in polar organic solvents (acetone and dimethyl sulfoxide) were investigated by NMR, UV-vis, and fluorescence techniques in conjunction with density functional theory calculations. UV-vis analysis showed that the binding of the two pyrenoimidazolyl benzaldehydes with fluoride anions resulted in significant colorimetric responses, while fluorescence studies showed that the para -pyrenoimidazolyl benzaldehyde behaved as an intramolecular charge transfer fluorescent probe, exhibiting ratiometric sensing performance to efficiently detect and quantify fluoride anions at the sub-millimolar level., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Erwinia amylovora is a plant pathogen belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family, a family containing many plant and animal pathogens. Herein, we announce nine genome sequences of E. amylovora bacteriophages isolated from infected apple trees along the Wasatch Front in Utah.

The phenols 4-methylphenol, 4-methoxyphenol, and N-acetyl-tyrosine form hydrogen-bonded adducts with N-methyl-4, 4'-bipyridinium cation (MQ + ) in aqueous solution as evidenced by the appearance of low-energy, low-absorptivity features in UV-visible spectra. They are assigned to the known examples of optically induced, concerted electron-proton transfer, photoEPT. The results of ultrafast transient absorption measurements on the assembly MeOPhO-H---MQ + are consistent with concerted EPT by the instantaneous appearance of spectral features for MeOPhO·---H-MQ + in the transient spectra at the first observation time of 0.1 ps. The transient decays to MeOPhO-H---MQ + in 2.5 ps, accompanied by the appearance of oscillations in the decay traces with a period of ∼1 ps, consistent with a vibrational coherence and relaxation from a higher υ(N-H) vibrational level or levels on the timescale for back EPT., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

The atomically precise doping of silicon with phosphorus (Si:P) using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) promises ultimate miniaturization of field effect transistors. The one-dimensional (1D) Si:P nanowires are of particular interest, retaining exceptional conductivity down to the atomic scale, and are predicted as interconnects for a scalable silicon-based quantum computer. Here, we show that ultrathin Si:P nanowires form one of the most-stable electrical conductors, with the phenomenological Hooge parameter of low-frequency noise being as low as ≈10(-8) at 4.2 K, nearly 3 orders of magnitude lower than even carbon-nanotube-based 1D conductors. A in-built isolation from the surface charge fluctuations due to encapsulation of the wires within the epitaxial Si matrix is the dominant cause for the observed suppression of noise. Apart from quantum information technology, our results confirm the promising prospects for precision-doped Si:P structures in atomic-scale circuitry for the 11 nm technology node and beyond.

Periodic behavior in the climate system has important implications not only for weather prediction but also for understanding and interpreting the physical processes that drive climate variability. Here we demonstrate that the large-scale Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation exhibits marked periodicity on time scales of approximately 20 to 30 days. The periodicity is tied to the Southern Hemisphere baroclinic annular mode and emerges in hemispheric-scale averages of the eddy fluxes of heat, the eddy kinetic energy, and precipitation. Observational and theoretical analyses suggest that the oscillation results from feedbacks between the extratropical baroclinicity, the wave fluxes of heat, and radiative damping. The oscillation plays a potentially profound role in driving large-scale climate variability throughout much of the mid-latitude Southern Hemisphere.

Lung surfactant is a complex mixture of lipid and protein, responsible for alveolar stability, becomes dysfunctional due to alteration of its structure and function by leaked serum materials in disease. Serum proteins, cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL) were studied with bovine lipid extract surfactant (BLES) using Langmuir films, and bilayer dispersions using Raman spectroscopy. While small amount of cholesterol (10 wt%) and LDL did not significantly affect the adsorption and surface tension lowering properties of BLES. However serum lipids, whole serum as well as higher amounts of cholesterol, and LDL dramatically altered the surface properties of BLES films, as well as gel-fluid structures formed in such films observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Raman-spectroscopic studies revealed that serum proteins, LDL and excess cholesterol had fluidizing effects on BLES bilayers dispersion, monitored from the changes in hydrocarbon vibrational modes during gel-fluid thermal phase transitions. This study clearly suggests that patho-physiological amounts of serum lipids (and not proteins) significantly alter the molecular arrangement of surfactant in films and bilayers, and can be used to model lung disease.

Hybrids of tetrathiafulvalene vinylogues (TTFVs) and planar arenes were synthesized via the click reaction to form tweezer-like and macrocyclic structures. These compounds were investigated as receptors for fullerenes (C60 and C70) by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy.

A new iterative bridge formation strategy has been employed in the synthesis of a series of [n](2,11)teropyrenophanes (n = 7-9). The generation of the nonplanar teropyrene system, which is calculated to be bent through 178.7° for the smallest homologue (n = 7), is accomplished using a VID reaction of a cyclophanemonoene precursor for the first time.

A new data set of middle- and upper-stratospheric temperatures based on reprocessing of satellite radiances provides a view of stratospheric climate change during the period 1979-2005 that is strikingly different from that provided by earlier data sets. The new data call into question our understanding of observed stratospheric temperature trends and our ability to test simulations of the stratospheric response to emissions of greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances. Here we highlight the important issues raised by the new data and suggest how the climate science community can resolve them.

A very short synthesis (5 steps), the crystal structure and resolution of an elaborate, inherently chiral [n](1,6)pyrenophane is reported. The synthesis hinges upon two very productive events: a multicomponent reaction and an unprecedented double-McMurry/valence isomerization/dehydrogenation step. Aromatization reactions are involved in the formation of all four of the rings of the pyrene system.

Tetrathiafulvalene vinylogue (TTFV) was functionalized with two anthryl fluorophores via Cu(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide [3 + 2] cycloaddition, forming a dianthryl-TTFV hybrid to show fluorescent turn-on sensing behaviour for Cu(2+), Fe(2+), and Cd(2+) ions in THF with remarkably low detection limit down to the sub-ppm level.

Side-chain functionalized poly(p-phenylene ethynylene)s (PPEs) carrying triazole linkers, amino donors/receptors, and solubilizing groups have been found to yield remarkably high efficiency of fluorescence turn-on sensing for Zn(2+) and Cd(2+) ions in THF, and for H(+) and Cd(2+) ions in water.

A concise, highly regioselective synthesis of 1,8-dibromo-4,5-dialkoxypyrenes has been developed and exploited in the synthesis of some 1,8-pyrenylene-ethynylene macrocycles. The (1)H NMR data and NICS calculations indicate that there is little or no macrocyclic ring current. Concentration-dependent UV-visible studies indicate no aggregation at low concentration, but 8b forms dimers with voids suitable for intercalation of small molecules in the solid state.

Two phenylboronic acid based saccharide sensors bearing conjugated oligomer fluorophores with linear and cruciform π-frameworks were synthesized in a modular approach utilizing a Cu-catalyzed alkyne azide cycloaddition (click) reaction. The cruciform fluorophore showed excellent saccharide sensing function under physiological conditions in the mM range, whereas the linear fluorophore gave very limited sensing functions. The different fluorescent sensing behaviours highlight the important role of oligomer fluorophore in the development of effective saccharide sensors.

The twentieth-century trend in global-mean surface temperature was not monotonic: temperatures rose from the start of the century to the 1940s, fell slightly during the middle part of the century, and rose rapidly from the mid-1970s onwards. The warming-cooling-warming pattern of twentieth-century temperatures is typically interpreted as the superposition of long-term warming due to increasing greenhouse gases and either cooling due to a mid-twentieth century increase of sulphate aerosols in the troposphere, or changes in the climate of the world's oceans that evolve over decades (oscillatory multidecadal variability). Loadings of sulphate aerosol in the troposphere are thought to have had a particularly important role in the differences in temperature trends between the Northern and Southern hemispheres during the decades following the Second World War. Here we show that the hemispheric differences in temperature trends in the middle of the twentieth century stem largely from a rapid drop in Northern Hemisphere sea surface temperatures of about 0.3 °C between about 1968 and 1972. The timescale of the drop is shorter than that associated with either tropospheric aerosol loadings or previous characterizations of oscillatory multidecadal variability. The drop is evident in all available historical sea surface temperature data sets, is not traceable to changes in the attendant metadata, and is not linked to any known biases in surface temperature measurements. The drop is not concentrated in any discrete region of the Northern Hemisphere oceans, but its amplitude is largest over the northern North Atlantic.

A new fluorescence chemosensor (3) made up of a biscrown-annulated TTFAQ receptor and two anthracene fluorophores was designed and synthesized. Its solid-state structure was disclosed by X-ray crystallographic analysis, while fluorescence titrations indicated a high sensitivity for large hard metal cations such as Ba(2+).

Reflective and surface conductive polyimide films were prepared by the incorporation of silver(I) acetate and trifluoroacetylacetone into a dimethylacetamide solution of the poly(amic acid) formed 3,3',4,4'-oxidiphthalic dianhydride (ODPA) and 4,4'-oxidianiline (4,4'-ODA). Thermal curing of (trifluoroacetylacetonato)silver(I)-poly(amic acid) films led to cycloimidization with concomitant silver(I) reduction, which yielded a reflective and conductive silver surface at selected silver concentrations if the film was cured to a final temperature of 300 degrees C for several hours. The metallized ODPA/4,4'-ODA films retain the essential mechanical properties of an undoped film and have good thermal stability, particularly under a nitrogen atmosphere. The bulk of the composite film was not electrically conductive. The use of (hexafluoroacetylacetonato)silver(I) and silver(I) tetrafluoroborate as sources of silver(I) with ODPA/4,4'-ODA yielded modestly reflective films that never developed conductivity. The silvered films prepared with (trifluoroacetylacetonato)silver(I) can be patterned using mask-etch techniques. Comparisons are made among four similar silver-polyimide systems, with the polyimides being ODPA/4,4'-ODA, BTDA/4,4'-ODA, BPDA/4,4'-ODA, and 6FDA/4-BDAF.

A facile ambient temperature route to the fabrication of surface silver-metallized polyimide films is described. Silver(I) trifluoromethanesulfonate or silver(I) nitrate and a polyimide, derived from 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride and an equimolar amount of 4,4'-oxydianiline and 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid, were dissolved together in dimethylacetamide. Silver(I)-doped films were prepared at thicknesses of 25-40 microm and depleted of solvent by evaporation at ambient temperature and low humidity. The silver(I)-ion-containing films were then treated with aqueous solutions of the reducing agents hydrazine hydrate and hydroxylamine, which brought forth surface-silvered films exhibiting conductivity on the order of bulk polycrystalline silver accompanied by modest-to-high specular reflectivity.

Thin films of amphiphilic vinylidene fluoride oligomers prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett deposition on silicone substrates were investigated by comparing experimental and theoretical mid-infrared (IR) spectra. The experimental spectra were obtained using infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry. Theoretical spectra were calculated using density functional theory. Excellent correspondence of major IR bands in both data sets shows that the molecular backbone is oriented with the long axis normal to the substrate plane. This is in contrast to poly(vinylidene fluoride) LB films, in which the polymer chains are parallel to the substrate.

A new class of two-dimensional (2D), pi-conjugated, skewed H-shaped co-oligomers of phenylene vinylene and phenylene ethynylene (11a- d, termed H-mers) were synthesized using Sonogashira coupling and Wittig-Horner reactions as the key steps. Electronic and spectroscopic properties of the H-mers were investigated by UV-vis absorption, fluorescence spectroscopic techniques, and ab initio calculations (HF/3-21G). Two amino-containing functional H-mers (11b and 11d) were found to exhibit appealing fluorescence sensitivity to selected Brønsted acids and transition-metal ions.

Data sets used to monitor the Earth's climate indicate that the surface of the Earth warmed from approximately 1910 to 1940, cooled slightly from approximately 1940 to 1970, and then warmed markedly from approximately 1970 onward. The weak cooling apparent in the middle part of the century has been interpreted in the context of a variety of physical factors, such as atmosphere-ocean interactions and anthropogenic emissions of sulphate aerosols. Here we call attention to a previously overlooked discontinuity in the record at 1945, which is a prominent feature of the cooling trend in the mid-twentieth century. The discontinuity is evident in published versions of the global-mean temperature time series, but stands out more clearly after the data are filtered for the effects of internal climate variability. We argue that the abrupt temperature drop of approximately 0.3 degrees C in 1945 is the apparent result of uncorrected instrumental biases in the sea surface temperature record. Corrections for the discontinuity are expected to alter the character of mid-twentieth century temperature variability but not estimates of the century-long trend in global-mean temperatures.

The synthesis of a class of highly pi-extended tetrathiafulvalene derivatives (1a and 1b) was explored using Sonogashira macrocyclization as a key step. The solid-state structure of 1b was characterized by X-ray single crystallography, showing a substantially bent, S-shaped molecular backbone and an ordered packing geometry in a pi-alkyl-alkyl-pi stacking fashion. Electronic and redox properties of 1b were investigated by UV-vis absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry.

The ligand-bridged complex cis,cis-[(bpy)2ClRu(pz)RuCl(bpy)2]2+ as the PF6- salt, (1)(PF6)2, is stabilized toward photochemical ligand loss in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Stabilization allows measurement of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) photophysical properties--emission and transient absorption. This includes appearance of an intervalence transfer absorption band in the near IR spectrum of the photochemically prepared, mixed valence form, [(bpy)2ClRuIII(pz(-*))RuIICl(bpy)2](PF6)2* (1*(PF6)2). Comparison of its IT band properties with those of ground state cis,cis-(bpy)2ClRuIII(pz)RuIICl(bpy)2]3+ in CD3CN allows a comparison to be made between pz and pz(-*) as bridging ligands. A model based on differences between rigid and fluid media provides an explanation for decreased IT band energies and widths in PMMA and provides important insight into electron transfer in rigid media.

The salts [Ru(bpy)3](PF6)2, cis-[Ru(bpy)2(py)2](PF6)2, trans-[Ru(bpy)2(4-Etpy)2](PF6)2, [Ru(tpy)2](PF6)2, and [Re(bpy)(CO)3(4-Etpy)](PF6) (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, py=pyridine, 4-Etpy=4-ethylpyridine, and tpy=2,2':6',2-terpyridine) have been incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films and their photophysical properties examined by both steady-state and time-resolved absorption and emission measurements. Excited-state lifetimes for the metal salts incorporated in PMMA are longer and emission energies enhanced due to a rigid medium effect when compared to fluid CH3CN solution. In PMMA part of the fluid medium reorganization energy, lambdaoo, contributes to the energy gap with lambdaoo approximately 700 cm-1 for [Ru(bpy)3](PF6)2 from emission measurements. Enhanced lifetimes can be explained by the energy gap law and the influence of the excited-to-ground state energy gap, Eo, on nonradiative decay. From the results of emission spectral fitting on [Ru(bpy)3](PF6)2* in PMMA, Eo is temperature dependent above 200 K with partial differentialEo/ partial differentialT=2.8 cm-1/deg. cis-[Ru(bpy)2(py)2](PF6)2 and trans-[Ru(bpy)2(4-Etpy)2](PF6)2 are nonemissive in CH3CN and undergo photochemical ligand loss. Both emit in PMMA and are stable toward ligand loss even for extended photolysis periods. The lifetime of cis-[Ru(bpy)2(py)2](PF6)2* in PMMA is temperature dependent, consistent with a contribution to excited-state decay from thermal population and decay through a low-lying dd state or states. At temperatures above 190 K, coinciding with the onset of the temperature dependence of Eo for [Ru(bpy)3](PF6)2*, lifetimes become significantly nonexponential. The nonexponential behavior is attributed to dynamic coupling between MLCT and dd states, with the lifetime of the latter greatly enhanced in PMMA with tau approximately 3 ns. On the basis of these data and data in 4:1 (v/v) EtOH/MeOH, the energy gap between the MLCT and dd states is decreased by approximately 700 cm-1 in PMMA with the dd state at higher energy by DeltaH0 approximately 1000 cm-1. The "rigid medium stabilization effect" for cis-[Ru(bpy)2(py)2](PF6)2* in PMMA is attributed to inhibition of metal-ligand bond breaking and a photochemical cage effect.

This work surveys the depth and character of ozone depletion in the Antarctic and Arctic using available long balloon-borne and ground-based records that cover multiple decades from ground-based sites. Such data reveal changes in the range of ozone values including the extremes observed as polar air passes over the stations. Antarctic ozone observations reveal widespread and massive local depletion in the heart of the ozone "hole" region near 18 km, frequently exceeding 90%. Although some ozone losses are apparent in the Arctic during particular years, the depth of the ozone losses in the Arctic are considerably smaller, and their occurrence is far less frequent. Many Antarctic total integrated column ozone observations in spring since approximately the 1980s show values considerably below those ever observed in earlier decades. For the Arctic, there is evidence of some spring season depletion of total ozone at particular stations, but the changes are much less pronounced compared with the range of past data. Thus, the observations demonstrate that the widespread and deep ozone depletion that characterizes the Antarctic ozone hole is a unique feature on the planet.

A number of wide- and narrow-rimmed functionalized alkynylcalix[4]arenes have been synthesized by Sonogashira coupling. With respect to their optical properties, these donor-acceptor systems are treated as ensembles of covalently linked, electronically independent tolane subchromophores. Linear UV/visible and fluorescence spectroscopic investigations revealed that the charge-transfer character of the electronic transitions in calixarenes, and also the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties depend on the electron-withdrawing nature of the terminal ethynylphenyl substituent (NO(2), CF(3), H). The nitro derivatives display high values of the quadratic hyperpolarizability beta. Not only do the (nonlinear) optical properties of the target compounds depend on the number and relative disposition of the subchromophores, but also on the geometry of the calixarenes. In particular, the opening angle of the calixarene cavity can be determined by the substitution pattern of the calixarene scaffold (wide- versus narrow-rim substitution) and the number of the acetylene functions introduced. Both the NLO properties and the conformational issues are conveniently assessed by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) in solution, and supported by X-ray crystallography in the solid state.

Flat, quantum dot like arrays of closely spaced, electron rich metal centres are seen as attractive subunits for device capability at the molecular level. Mn(II)9 grids, formed by self-assembly processes using 'tritopic' pyridine-2,6-dihydrazone ligands, provide easy and pre-programmable routes to such systems, and have been shown to exhibit a number of potentially useful physical properties, which could be utilized to generate bi-stable molecular based states. Their ability to form surface monolayers, which can be mapped by STM techniques, bodes well for their possible integration into nanometer scale electronic components of the future. This report highlights some new Mn(II)9 grids, with functionalized ligand sites, that may provide suitable anchor points to surfaces and also be potential donor sites capable of further grid elaboration. Structures, magnetic properties, electrochemical properties, surface studies on HOPG (highly ordered pyrolytic graphite), including the imaging of individual metal ion sites in the grid using CITS (current imaging tunneling spectroscopy) are discussed, in addition to an analysis of the photophysics of a stable mixed oxidation state [Mn(III)4Mn(II)5] grid. The grid physical properties as a whole are assessed in the light of reasonable approaches to the use of such molecules as nanometer scale devices.

Chemical modification of spin-cast chitosan films has been performed. This modification involves the attachment of 1,2 Epoxy-3-phenoxy-propane, commonly known as glycidyl phenyl ether (GPE), to the amine group of the chitosan molecule. Optical properties of modified films have been determined in the infrared region of the spectrum using spectroscopic ellipsometry, and are reported in this paper. Special attention is paid to the infrared region where the index of refraction and extinction coefficients from 750 to 4000 cm(-1) were determined. Difference plots of IR optical data before and after chemical modification were generated to confirm that modification had occurred. Optical modeling of infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry (IRSE) data with respect to chemical bond vibrations has also been performed. This modeling involved curve fitting of resonant chemical bond absorptions using Lorentz oscillators. These oscillator models allow for comparison of modified chitosan to unmodified chitosan. The purpose of this research was to determine infrared optical constants of chemically modified chitosan films This work shows that surface chemistry of biomaterials can be studied quite sensitively with spectroscopy ellipsometry, detecting as little as 100 ng/cm(2) of GPE.

Optical properties of spin-cast chitosan films have been determined in the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet region of the spectrum using spectroscopic ellipsometry. Optical constants for the UV-vis-near IR spectra from 130 to 1700 nm were determined using Cauchy dispersion forms combined with Lorentzian oscillator models in the absorptive shorter wavelength regions. Infrared index of refraction and extinction coefficients from 750 to 4000 cm(-1) were determined using ellipsometric data fits to dispersion models based on harmonic oscillators. This modeling determined that optical anisotropy was present and measurable over all wavelength regions of ellipsometric data. To obtain information on the micro- and nano-scale surface structure, tapping mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging was employed to determine morphology and roughness information of dry spin-cast chitosan films.

Recent observations indicate that climate change over the high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere is dominated by a strengthening of the circumpolar westerly flow that extends from the surface to the stratosphere. Here we demonstrate that the seasonality, structure, and amplitude of the observed climate trends are simulated in a state-of-the-art atmospheric model run with high vertical resolution that is forced solely by prescribed stratospheric ozone depletion. The results provide evidence that anthropogenic emissions of ozonedepleting gases have had a distinct impact on climate not only at stratospheric levels but at Earth's surface as well.

We present here the synthesis, characterization, and flash photolysis study of [(F(8)TPP)Fe(II)(CO)(THF)] (1) [F(8)TPP = tetrakis(2,6-difluorophenyl)porphyrinate(2-)]. Complex 1 crystallizes from THF/heptane solvent system as a tris-THF solvate, [(F(8)TPP)Fe(II)(CO)(THF)].3THF (1.3THF), with ferrous ion in the porphyrin plane (C(61)H(52)F(8)FeN(4)O(5); a = 11.7908(2) A, b = 20.4453(2) A, c = 39.9423(3), alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees; orthorhombic, P2(1)2(1)2(1), Z = 8; Fe-N(4)(av) = 2.00 A; N-Fe-N (all) = 90.0 degrees ). This complex (as 1.THF) has also been characterized by (1)H NMR [six-coordinate, low-spin heme; CD(3)CN, RT, delta 8.82 (s, pyrrole-H, 8H), 7.89 (s, para-phenyl-H, 8H), 7.46 (s, meta-phenyl-H, 4H), 3.58 (s, THF, 8H), 1.73 (s, THF, 8H)], (2)H NMR (pyrrole-deuterated analogue) [(F(8)TPP-d(8))Fe(II)(CO)(THF)] [THF, RT, delta 8.78 ppm (s, pyrrole-D)], (13)C NMR (on (13)CO-enriched adduct) [THF-d(8), RT, delta 206.5 ppm; CD(2)Cl(2), RT, delta 206.1 ppm], UV-vis [THF, RT, lambda(max), 411 (Soret), 525 nm], and IR [293 K, solution, nu(CO) 1979 cm(-)(1) (THF), 1976 cm(-)(1) (acetone), 1982 cm(-)(1) (CH(3)CN)] spectroscopies. In order to more fully understand the intricacies of solvent-ligand binding (as compared to CO rebinding to the photolyzed heme), we have also synthesized the bis-THF adduct [(F(8)TPP)Fe(II)(THF)(2)]. Complex 2 also crystallizes from THF/heptane solvent system as a bis-THF solvate, [(F(8)TPP)Fe(II)(THF)(2)].2THF (2.2THF), with ferrous iron in the porphyrin plane (C(60)H(52)F(8)FeN(4)O(4); a = 21.3216(3) A, b = 12.1191(2) A, c = 21.0125(2) A, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 105.3658(5) degrees, gamma = 90 degrees; monoclinic, C2/c, Z = 4; Fe-N(4)(av) = 2.07 A; N-Fe-N (all) = 90.0 degrees ). Further characterization of 2 includes UV-vis [THF, lambda(max), 421 (Soret), 542 nm] and (1)H NMR [six-coordinate, high spin heme; THF-d(8), RT, delta 56.7 (s, pyrrole-H, 8H), 8.38 (s, para-phenyl-H, 8H), 7.15 (s, meta-phenyl-H, 4H)] spectroscopies. Flash photolysis studies employing 1 were able to resolve the CO rebinding kinetics in both THF and cyclohexane solvents. In CO saturated THF [[CO] approximately 5 mM] and at [1] congruent with 5 microM, the conversion of [(F(8)TPP)Fe(II)(THF)(2)] (produced after photolytic displacement of CO) to [(F(8)TPP)Fe(II)(CO)(THF)] was monoexponential, with k(obs) = 1.6 (+/-0.2) x 10(4) s(-)(1). Reduction in [CO] by vigorous Ar purging gave k(obs) congruent with 10(3) s(-)(1) in cyclohexane. The study presented in this report lays the foundation for applying fast-time scale studies based on CO flash photolysis to the more complicated heterobimetallic heme/Cu systems.

We use an empirical statistical model to demonstrate significant skill in making extended-range forecasts of the monthly-mean Arctic Oscillation (AO). Forecast skill derives from persistent circulation anomalies in the lowermost stratosphere and is greatest during boreal winter. A comparison to the Southern Hemisphere provides evidence that both the time scale and predictability of the AO depend on the presence of persistent circulation anomalies just above the tropopause. These circulation anomalies most likely affect the troposphere through changes to waves in the upper troposphere, which induce surface pressure changes that correspond to the AO.

If conducted properly, an interview is a highly effective tool for evaluating managers at any level of an organization. Broad, general questions, gently put, elicit sincere behavior from others, allowing them the freedom to respond as they wish. Their responses tell us what they typically focus on. Moreover, the interviewee is inclined to find us "safe" to talk to. This reduces their fear or discomfort, which should be any interviewer's goal. Probing often elicits the most spontaneous, hence truest, behavior revealing who this person is and how he or she will respond in a particular position or situation. Good probes, which should be used frequently in any conversation, also convey the message that we care about the interviewee and his or her views. Interviewing means focusing on others. It should be an integral part of the board's repertoire of skills. It is also an integral part of being a good manager. Few people are emotionally capable of implementing the principles described here. It is incumbent on the board, therefore, to select those members who can conduct in-depth interviews for a new CEO.
