18. Personal and bodily identity : the metaphysics of resurrection in 17th century philosophy

This thesis is the most systematic exploration to date of the deep and varied debates about the metaphysics of resurrection in the 17th Century. It treats both well-known figures in the history of philosophy (Descartes, Locke, Boyle, and Leibniz), as well as figures whose significance has been somewhat forgotten (John of St Thomas, Franco Burgersdijk, and the Cambridge Platonists). In addition to recovering treatments of resurrection in these original sources, this study pays close attention to the argumentation of the philosophers in question. Taking seriously the philosophical framework of hylomorphism, this thesis begins with an account of the motivating considerations for resurrection. According to the hylomorphism prevalent at the beginning of the period, the person is the composite of body and soul. Bodily resurrection is therefore well-motivated for anyone reflecting on the possibility of a personal afterlife. After establishing the theological and historical setting (Chapter 1), the thesis explores three major frameworks for resurrection in the 17th Century: hylomorphism or Late Scholasticism (Chapter 2), Platonism (Chapter 3), and Locke's consciousness-based account of personal identity (Chapter 4). Each of these frameworks provides distinctive answers to the questions of the individuation of substances, the possibility of resurrection, and the relationship between personhood and embodiment. Over the course of this narrative, I argue for three main claims. First, we can understand important changes in philosophical anthropology (as well as the philosophy of mind) through the lens of the metaphysics of resurrection. Second, advocates of platonic dualism (and Neoplatonic theories of embodiment) led the way in changing conceptions of the relation between personhood and embodiment in the 17th Century. Most notably, these thinkers were some of the first in Western philosophy to so strongly contrast (human) personal with bodily identity. Third, the hylomorphic conception of the human person was abandoned (in part) due to the presumption that continuity of matter was not a plausible principle of diachronic individuation for the human being. However, I suggest that the conception of matter as a principle of diachronic individuation (both in earthly life and at resurrection) is more plausible than was appreciated during these crucial debates in the 17th Century. This last point provides the basis for future research on just such a hylomorphic account of the possibility of resurrection.

21. The Resurrection of the Flesh: the 'Peculiar Treasure' of the Church.

Abstract

This paper presents an argument for the recovery of the doctrine of the resurrection of the flesh. I argue that the doctrine accords with creedal and doctrinal tradition (§2), as well as the scriptural witness about the goodness and destiny of human flesh (§3). I then outline what it means to say – minimally – that the flesh (or 'numerically the same body') will be raised (§4). In §5, I argue that the doctrine speaks to the unique predicament of human beings, namely, that our very being (our flesh) is the site and source of our greatest fear – the fear of death. By focusing its proffered hopes on the same flesh in which our deepest fears are located, the promise of resurrection is shown to be a 'peculiar treasure'. Finally, I suggest in §5a‐5c three practices by which the church can inculcate this hope in the face of death. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

22. Conducting a Health Education Needs Assessment in Rural Nicaragua

Abstract

Objective: Each year, humanitarian groups provide health education programmes and interventions to underserved communities in Nicaragua. The purpose of this study was to identify the health education needs of a small community in rural Nicaragua to inform health education programming. Design: Mixed methods approach that used a quantitative survey and a qualitative questionnaire to determine health education priorities. Setting: Rural community in the Jinotega region of northern Nicaragua. Methods: The quantitative survey was completed by 125 participants to gauge the importance of specific health topics, while 49 of those participants also completed a qualitative questionnaire that solicited information about participants' current health knowledge, beliefs and practices. Results: Quantitative results showed that participants ranked the prevention of respiratory illness as their highest education need, while exercise was their lowest priority. Smoking cessation and reducing alcohol use were viewed as significantly higher priorities by men than by women. Qualitative findings revealed five major themes related to reproductive health, respiratory health, nutrition, stress and exercise. Within each theme, participants demonstrated knowledge of health promoting behaviours; however, barriers to adopting healthy behaviours were also evident. For example, some female participants expressed feelings of powerlessness in sexual relationships despite knowledge of how sexually transmitted infections could be prevented. Participants also identified the importance of nutrition but described poor access to healthy foods. Conclusion: Findings from this study provided information to develop future health education programmes that build upon the community's strengths while addressing the health topics most important to residents.

Abstract

Background: The number of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) in the U.S. has been rapidly increasing during the past decade. Despite the growth of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), little is known about the factors that are associated with hospital leadership of ACOs that contract with public and private payers. Purpose: Using a resource dependency framework, this study examines the organizational characteristics and environmental factors that are associated with hospitals who are leading an ACO. Methodology: We used the data from the American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Survey of Hospitals for 2018, the Area Health Resources Files and the Medicare Cost Reports. A multiple logistic regression was used to test associations of the independent variables with the hospital leadership of ACOs. Results: We found that nearly one third of the hospitals studied were leading an ACO. System affiliated and not-for-profit hospitals were more likely to be the leaders. Hospitals that lead an ACO offer more clinical services and have better financial performance. Metropolitan core-based statistical areas and per capita income were significantly positively associated with leading an ACO. However, the proportion of population aged 65 and over and the percentage of Medicare advantage penetration were significantly negatively associated with leading an ACO. Conclusions: Hospitals vary in leading an ACO, which may provide critical resources for them by creating an infrastructure that enables accountable care, extends their services into population health and value-based care programs increasingly promoted by public and commercial payers. Abstract

Introduction: Short-term experiences in global health (STEGH) provide nursing students with opportunities to develop global health competencies through immersion in another culture. Skills that students obtain by participating in STEGHs can inform future practice with diverse patient populations. However, educators encounter unique challenges to the quality and sustainability of STEGHs. Methods: This article describes an academic partnership between a baccalaureate nursing program and a community-based international nongovernmental organization (INGO), how the partnership informed development of STEGH for nursing students, the benefits of the program for students and community, and the lessons learned through the process. Results: Academic–INGO partnerships provide unique benefits for creating sustainable, rigorous STEGHs that are informed and guided by the needs of the hosting community. Discussion: By partnering with community-based INGOs, faculty can design STEGHs that offer robust learning opportunities that facilitate the development of global health competencies while providing thoughtful, sustainable outreach for communities.
