It is envisioned that the sixth generation (6G) and beyond 6G (B6G) wireless communication networks will enable global coverage in space, air, ground, and sea. In this case, both base stations and users can be mobile and will tend to move continuously in three-dimensional (3D) space. Therefore, obtaining channel state information (CSI) in 3D continuous-space is crucial for the design and performance evaluation of future 6G and B6G wireless systems. On the other hand, new 6G technologies such as integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) will also require prior knowledge of CSI in 3D continuous-space. In this paper, a 3D continuous-space electromagnetic channel model is proposed for tri-polarized multi-user communications, taking into account scatterers and spherical wavefronts. Scattered fields are calculated using the method of moments (MoM) with high accuracy. Spherical wave functions are utilized to decompose the dyadic Green's functions that connect the transmitted source currents and the received electric fields. Simulation results demonstrate that transmit power, apertures, scatterers, and sample intervals have significant impacts on statistical properties and channel capacities, providing insights into the performance of continuous-space electromagnetic channel models and the design of future wireless systems.

This study introduces an innovative beamforming design approach that incorporates the reliability of antenna array elements into the optimization process, termed "antenna health-aware selective beamforming". This method strategically focuses transmission power on more reliable antenna elements, thus enhancing system resilience and operational integrity. By integrating antenna health information and individual power constraints, our research leverages advanced optimization techniques such as the Group Proximal-Gradient Dual Ascent (GPGDA) to efficiently address nonconvex challenges in sparse array selection. Applying the proposed technique to a Dual-Functional Radar-Communication (DFRC) system, our findings highlight that increasing the sparsity promotion weight ($\rho_s$) generally boosts spectral efficiency and communication data rate, achieving perfect system reliability at higher $\rho_s$ values but also revealing a performance threshold beyond which further sparsity is detrimental. This underscores the importance of balanced sparsity in beamforming for optimizing performance, particularly in critical communication and defense applications where uninterrupted operation is crucial. Additionally, our analysis of the time complexity and power consumption associated with GPGDA underscores the need for optimizing computational resources in practical implementations.

Dual functional radar and communication (DFRC) systems are a viable approach to extend the services of future communication systems. Most studies designing DFRC systems assume that the target direction is known. In our paper, we address a critical scenario where this information is not exactly known. For such a system, a signal-to-clutter-plus-noise ratio (SCNR) maximization problem is formulated. Quality-of-service constraints for communication users (CUs) are also incorporated as constraints on their received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs). To tackle the nonconvexity, an iterative alternating optimization approach is developed where, at each iteration, the optimization is alternatively performed with respect to transmit and receive beamformers. Specifically, a penalty-based approach is used to obtain an efficient sub-optimal solution for the resulting subproblem with regard to transmit beamformers. Next, a globally optimal solution is obtained for receive beamformers with the help of the Dinkleback approach. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is also proved by proving the nondecreasing nature of the objective function with iterations. The numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Specifically, it is observed that the proposed algorithm converges within almost 3 iterations, and the SCNR performance is almost unchanged with the number of possible target directions.

We introduce ChartA11y, an app developed to enable accessible 2-D visualizations on smartphones for blind users through a participatory and iterative design process involving 13 sessions with two blind partners. We also present a design journey for making accessible touch experiences that go beyond simple auditory feedback, incorporating multimodal interactions and multisensory data representations. Together, ChartA11y aimed at providing direct chart accessing and comprehensive chart understanding by applying a two-mode setting: a semantic navigation framework mode and a direct touch mapping mode. By re-designing traditional touch-to-audio interactions, ChartA11y also extends to accessible scatter plots, addressing the under-explored challenges posed by their non-linear data distribution. Our main contributions encompass the detailed participatory design process and the resulting system, ChartA11y, offering a novel approach for blind users to access visualizations on their smartphones.

With most modern visualization tools, authors need to transform their data into tidy formats to create visualizations they want. Because this requires experience with programming or separate data processing tools, data transformation remains a barrier in visualization authoring. To address this challenge, we present a new visualization paradigm, concept binding, that separates high-level visualization intents and low-level data transformation steps, leveraging an AI agent. We realize this paradigm in Data Formulator, an interactive visualization authoring tool. With Data Formulator, authors first define data concepts they plan to visualize using natural languages or examples, and then bind them to visual channels. Data Formulator then dispatches its AI-agent to automatically transform the input data to surface these concepts and generate desired visualizations. When presenting the results (transformed table and output visualizations) from the AI agent, Data Formulator provides feedback to help authors inspect and understand them. A user study with 10 participants shows that participants could learn and use Data Formulator to create visualizations that involve challenging data transformations, and presents interesting future research directions.

Creating an animated data video enriched with audio narration takes a significant amount of time and effort and requires expertise. Users not only need to design complex animations, but also turn written text scripts into audio narrations and synchronize visual changes with the narrations. This paper presents WonderFlow, an interactive authoring tool, that facilitates narration-centric design of animated data videos. WonderFlow allows authors to easily specify a semantic link between text and the corresponding chart elements. Then it automatically generates audio narration by leveraging text-to-speech techniques and aligns the narration with an animation. WonderFlow provides a visualization structure-aware animation library designed to ease chart animation creation, enabling authors to apply pre-designed animation effects to common visualization components. It also allows authors to preview and iteratively refine their data videos in a unified system, without having to switch between different creation tools. To evaluate WonderFlow's effectiveness and usability, we created an example gallery and conducted a user study and expert interviews. Fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems have entered the stage of commercial development, providing users with new services and improved user experiences as well as offering a host of novel opportunities to various industries. However, 5G still faces many challenges. To address these challenges, international industrial, academic, and standards organizations have commenced research on sixth generation (6G) wireless communication systems. A series of white papers and survey papers have been published, which aim to define 6G in terms of requirements, application scenarios, key technologies, etc. Although ITU-R has been working on the 6G vision and it is expected to reach a consensus on what 6G will be by mid-2023, the related global discussions are still wide open and the existing literature has identified numerous open issues. This paper first provides a comprehensive portrayal of the 6G vision, technical requirements, and application scenarios, covering the current common understanding of 6G. Then, a critical appraisal of the 6G network architecture and key technologies is presented. Furthermore, existing testbeds and advanced 6G verification platforms are detailed for the first time. In addition, future research directions and open challenges are identified for stimulating the on-going global debate. Finally, lessons learned to date concerning 6G networks are discussed.

In this paper, we propose an encoder-decoder neural architecture (called Channelformer) to achieve improved channel estimation for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms in downlink scenarios. The self-attention mechanism is employed to achieve input precoding for the input features before processing them in the decoder. In particular, we implement multi-head attention in the encoder and a residual convolutional neural architecture as the decoder, respectively. We also employ a customized weight-level pruning to slim the trained neural network with a fine-tuning process, which reduces the computational complexity significantly to realize a low complexity and low latency solution. This enables reductions of up to 70\% in the parameters, while maintaining an almost identical performance compared with the complete Channelformer. We also propose an effective online training method based on the fifth generation (5G) new radio (NR) configuration for the modern communication systems, which only needs the available information at the receiver for online training. In this paper, we propose a method to design the training data that can support robust generalization of trained neural networks to unseen channels. The proposed design that improves the generalization is described and analysed. It avoids the requirement of online training for previously unseen channels, as this is a memory and processing intensive solution, especially for battery powered mobile terminals. To prove the validity of the proposed method, we use the channels modelled by different standards and fading modelling for simulation. We also use an attention-based structure and a convolutional neural network to evaluate the generalization results achieved. This paper studies a $K$-user lattice-code based multiple-access (LCMA) scheme. Each user equipment (UE) encode its message with a practical lattice code, where we suggest a $2^m$-ary \emph{ring code} with symbol-wise bijective mapping to $2^m$-PAM. The coded-modulated signal is spread with its designated signature sequence, and all $K$ UEs transmit simultaneously. The LCMA receiver choose some integer coefficients, computes the associated $K$ streams of \emph{integer linear combinations} (ILCs) of the UEs' messages, and then reconstruct all UEs' messages from these ILC streams. To execute this, we put forth new efficient LCMA \emph{soft detection} algorithms, which calculate the a posteriori probability of the ILC over the lattice. The complexity is of order no greater than $O(K)$, suitable for massive access of a large $K$. The soft detection outputs are forwarded to $K$ ring-code decoders, which employ $2^m$-ary belief propagation to recover the ILC streams. To identify the optimal integer coefficients of the ILCs, a new ``%\emph{bounded independent vectors problem}" (BIVP) is established. We then solve this BIVP by developing a new \emph{rate-constraint sphere decoding} algorithm, significantly outperforming existing LLL and HKZ lattice reduction methods. Then, we develop optimized signature sequences of LCMA using a new target-switching steepest descent algorithm. With our developed algorithms, LCMA is shown to support a significantly higher load of UEs and exhibits dramatically improved error rate performance over state-of-the-art multiple access schemes such as interleave-division multiple-access (IDMA) and sparse-code multiple-access (SCMA). Mobile communication standards were developed for enhancing transmission and network performance by using more radio resources and improving spectrum and energy efficiency. How to effectively address diverse user requirements and guarantee everyone's Quality of Experience (QoE) remains an open problem. The Sixth Generation (6G) mobile systems will solve this problem by utilizing heterogenous network resources and pervasive intelligence to support everyone-centric customized services anywhere and anytime. In this article, we first coin the concept of Service Requirement Zone (SRZ) on the user side to characterize and visualize the integrated service requirements and preferences of specific tasks of individual users. On the system side, we further introduce the concept of User Satisfaction Ratio (USR) to evaluate the system's overall service ability of satisfying a variety of tasks with different SRZs. Then, we propose a network Artificial Intelligence (AI) architecture with integrated network resources and pervasive AI capabilities for supporting customized services with guaranteed QoEs. In this paper, we deploy the self-attention mechanism to achieve improved channel estimation for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing waveforms in the downlink. Specifically, we propose a new hybrid encoder-decoder structure (called HA02) for the first time which exploits the attention mechanism to focus on the most important input information. In particular, we implement a transformer encoder block as the encoder to achieve the sparsity in the input features and a residual neural network as the decoder respectively, inspired by the success of the attention mechanism. Using 3GPP channel models, our simulations show superior estimation performance compared with other candidate neural network methods for channel estimation.

Although machine learning (ML) has shown promise in numerous domains, there are concerns about generalizability to out-of-sample data. This is currently addressed by centrally sharing ample, and importantly diverse, data from multiple sites. However, such centralization is challenging to scale (or even not feasible) due to various limitations. Federated ML (FL) provides an alternative to train accurate and generalizable ML models, by only sharing numerical model updates. Here we present findings from the largest FL study to-date, involving data from 71 healthcare institutions across 6 continents, to generate an automatic tumor boundary detector for the rare disease of glioblastoma, utilizing the largest dataset of such patients ever used in the literature (25,256 MRI scans from 6,314 patients). We demonstrate a 33% improvement over a publicly trained model to delineate the surgically targetable tumor, and 23% improvement over the tumor's entire extent. We anticipate our study to: 1) enable more studies in healthcare informed by large and diverse data, ensuring meaningful results for rare diseases and underrepresented populations, 2) facilitate further quantitative analyses for glioblastoma via performance optimization of our consensus model for eventual public release, and 3) demonstrate the effectiveness of FL at such scale and task complexity as a paradigm shift for multi-site collaborations, alleviating the need for data sharing., Comment: federated learning, deep learning, convolutional neural network, segmentation, brain tumor, glioma, glioblastoma, FeTS, BraTS

Research on machine learning for channel estimation, especially neural network solutions for wireless communications, is attracting significant current interest. This is because conventional methods cannot meet the present demands of the high speed communication. In the paper, we deploy a general residual convolutional neural network to achieve channel estimation for the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in a downlink scenario. Our method also deploys a simple interpolation layer to replace the transposed convolutional layer used in other networks to reduce the computation cost. The proposed method is more easily adapted to different pilot patterns and packet sizes.
