Abstract

A homogeneous catalyst system consisting of Mn(OAc)2 and 2‐picolinic acid was studied for alcohol oxidation using peracetic acid as the oxidant. Catalyst loadings as low as 0.01 mol% could be utilized and the system compared well to other peroxide based methods. Abstract

PURPOSE: We investigated the prevalence of financial toxicity in a population undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) evaluation and measured its impact on post-transplant clinical and health-related quality-of-life outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective study in patients undergoing evaluation for allogeneic HCT between January 1, 2018, and September 23, 2020, at a large academic medical center. Financial health was measured via a baseline survey and the comprehensive score for financial toxicity-functional assessment of chronic illness therapy (COST-FACIT) survey. The cohort was divided into three groups: none (grade 0), mild (grade 1), and moderate-high financial toxicity (grades 2-3). Health-related quality of life outcomes were measured at multiple time points. Multivariate logistic regression analysis evaluated factors associated with financial toxicity. Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests was used to evaluate overall survival (OS) and nonrelapse survival. RESULTS: Of 245 patients evaluated for transplant, 176 (71.8%) completed both questionnaires (median age was 57 years, 63.1% were male, 72.2% were White, and 39.2% had myelodysplastic syndrome, 38.1% leukemia, and 13.6% lymphoma). At initial evaluation, 83 (47.2%) patients reported no financial toxicity, 51 (29.0%) with mild, and 42 (23.9%) with moderate-high financial toxicity. Patients with financial toxicity reported significant cost-cutting behaviors, including reduced spending on food or clothing, using their savings, or not filling a prescription because of costs (P <.0001). Quality of life was lower in patients with moderate-high financial toxicity at 6 months (P =.0007) and 1 year (P =.0075) after transplant. Older age (>62; odds ratio [OR], 0.33 [95% CI, 0.13 to 0.79]; P =.04) and income ≥$60,000 in US dollars (USD) (OR, 0.17 [95% CI, 0.08 to 0.38]; P <.0001) were associated with lower odds of financial toxicity. No association was noted between financial toxicity and selection for transplant, OS, or nonrelapse mortality. CONCLUSION: Financial toxicity was highly correlated with patient-reported changes in compensatory behavior, with notable impact on patient quality of life after transplant. Abstract

The continuous catalytic transfer hydrogenation of benzonitrile to benzylamine is demonstrated using a palladium on carbon catalyst with triethylammonium formate as reducing agent. Solvent choice was critical in overcoming rapid catalyst deactivation. A 15-fold increase in catalyst productivity was observed in flow compared to batch, which was achieved using an ethanol–water solvent in combination with intermittent catalyst regeneration by washing with water.

Abstract

Amorphous aluminophosphates are industrial catalysts that are active in aldol-type condensations, dehydration and alkylation. The intrinsic nature of the active sites present in these materials is poorly understood. Herein we report a comparative investigation of the catalytic active sites in amorphous and crystalline aluminophosphates (AFI topology) and their corresponding iron-containing analogues, employing Claisen-Schmidt condensation of acetophenone and benzaldehyde as the test reaction. Secondary porosity generated via the soft-templating approach in hierarchically-porous HP FeAlPO-5, and the presence of large mesopores in amorphous Am FeAlPO resulted in improved mass-transport and high conversion of carbonyls. The nature and concentration of the active acidic sites within these materials were characterized by pyridine-DRIFTS and propylamine-TPD studies and was shown to play a crucial role in the activation of carbonyl groups and better catalytic performance. Am FeAlPO(5) nearly outperformed HP FeAlPO-5, thus providing a promising alternative for expanding scope in industrial and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract

This work describes newly synthesized composite polymeric membranes and their utilization in propane/propylene separation in a gas mixture. The nonporous composite polymers were successfully synthesized by using thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and several silver salts/silver salts with ionic liquids (ILs). Our studies showed that silver bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Ag[Tf2N]) containing membranes outperformed other silver salt containing membranes in terms of selectivity. In addition, to this finding, ILs, as additives for the membranes, enhanced the selectivity by facilitating improved coordination of the olefin with the silver ions in the dense composite polymers.

Raman spectra of the ionic liquids, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C4mim] [PF6]), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C6mim]Cl), and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C4mim] [PF6]), and binary mixtures thereof, are assigned using ab initio MP2 calculations. The vibrational analysis of the binary system reveal that the changes in hydrogen bonding to the ring hydrogen atoms do not have any detectable effect on the 50:50 distribution of the two conformers.

Abstract

peer-reviewed, Nickel supported on η-Al2O3 and ZSM-5(80) catalysts with and without the addition of ceria-zirconia, were prepared by co-precipitation and wet impregnation methods and used for the low temperature catalytic partial oxidation of methane (CPOM). The catalysts were tested under reaction temperatures of between 400 and 700 °C with a WHSV of 63,000 mL g−1 h−1. The activity of the catalyst was found to be dependent on the support and preparation method. The optimum catalyst composition of those tested was 10% Ni on 25%CeO2-ZrO2/ZSM-5(80), prepared by co-precipitation, where the reaction reached equilibrium conversion at 400 °C (T50% < 400 °C), which is one of the lowest temperatures reported to date. Further increases in temperature led to improved selectivity to CO reaching 60% at 600 °C. Although the observed kinetics were found to be controlled by strong adsorption of CO at lower temperature, this was an equilibrium limitation with longer time on stream experiments showing no decrease in the catalyst activity over 25 h at 400 °C, ACCEPTED, peer-reviewed
