1. A Stable Measure for Conditional Periodicity of Time Series using Persistent Homology

Abstract

Given a pair of time series, we study how the periodicity of one influences the periodicity of the other. There are several known methods to measure the similarity between a pair of time series, such as cross-correlation, coherence, cross-recurrence, and dynamic time warping. But we have yet to find any measures with theoretical stability results. Persistence homology has been utilized to construct a scoring function with theoretical guarantees of stability that quantifies the periodicity of a single univariate time series f1, denoted score(f1). Building on this concept, we propose a conditional periodicity score that quantifies the periodicity of one univariate time series f1 given another f2, denoted score(f1|f2), and derive theoretical stability results for the same. With the use of dimension reduction in mind, we prove a new stability result for score(f1|f2) under principal component analysis (PCA) when we use the projections of the time series embeddings onto their respective first K principal components. We show that the change in our score is bounded by a function of the eigenvalues corresponding to the remaining (unused) N-K principal components and hence is small when the first K principal components capture most of the variation in the time series embeddings. Finally we derive a lower bound on the minimum embedding dimension to use in our pipeline which guarantees that any two such embeddings give scores that are within a given epsilon of each other. We present a procedure for computing conditional periodicity scores and implement it on several pairs of synthetic signals. We experimentally compare our similarity measure to the most-similar statistical measure of cross-recurrence, and show the increased accuracy and stability of our score when predicting and measuring whether or not the periodicities of two time series are similar., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures

2. Procedural Innovation, the Rule of Law, and Civil Rights Justice

Abstract

Among the most inscrutable and plaguing roadblocks to implementing the Rule of Law in the United States and abroad has been delay—both postponement required by legal substance and procedure and delaying tactics offensively employed by parties and jurists who oppose clearly established law. The results include denial of justice and destabilization of our democratic legal system. This Article proposes the key of courts employing innovative and courageous procedural mechanisms to thwart delay and breakthrough the logjam of resistance to the Rule of Law. The Federal Circuit Court of Appeals governing six Southern states—Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas—during the post-Brown v. Board of Education (1954) years provides an exemplar of how court systems can surmount dilatory and obstructive tactics to deliver justice.This six-state circuit—then known as the Fifth Circuit—included officials, jurists, and communities vehemently opposed to desegregation and determined to avoid the dictates of Brown through delay and obstruction. In response, innovative and bold federal appellate judges employed legal methods others had not recognized or used as broadly to spur justice: expediting appellate hearings, making mandates effective immediately upon judgment, deeming traditionally non-appealable orders (such as a temporary restraining order denial) appealable, issuing injunctions pending appeal based upon the All Writs Statute and Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 62(g), dictating the substance of the trial court’s order upon remand, and deciding appeals by a single-judge panel. Contemporary opponents screamed foul—but the reforms stood and resulted in expedited justice.Although others have lauded the post-Brown Federal Circuit Court governing the Deep South for its procedural ingenuity and resulting expeditious advances in post-Brown civil rights, this Article adds four critical dimensions: (1) diving deeper and broader (including through assimilation of prior scholarship) into the basis for and ingenuity of these procedures in civil rights cases; (2) extending appreciation of the long-term effect of these bold moves in future decades, including today; (3) proposing three replicable keys to the court’s successfully subjugating delay and obstruction: proactively structuring and employing local rules and procedures, applying procedural rules assertively in non-traditional ways, and harnessing what this Article terms “potential power” laws to grant the court the greatest and most flexible authority; and (4) arguing for the broad employment of this bold procedural approach when democratic legal systems globally confront systemic or purposeful obstruction. The Article, in sum, proposes a flexible paradigm for courts to employ to overcome incapacitating delay and resistance, and consequently deliver justice, through procedural assertiveness and undaunted mettle.

Abstract

Understanding of the biology, pathology, and natural history of cystic lesions of the pancreas has expanded dramatically. As recently as the 1970s, all tumors of the pancreas with cystic morphology [...], * Context.--Macroscopic precursor lesions of the pancreas represent a complex clinical management problem. Molecular characterization of pancreatic cysts has helped to confirm and refine clinical and pathologic classifications of these lesions, inform our understanding of tumorigenesis in the pancreas, and provide opportunities for preoperative diagnosis. Objective.--To review the pathologic classification of macroscopic cystic lesions of the pancreas: intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs), mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs), intraductal oncocytic papillary neoplasms (IOPNs), and intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasms (ITPNs), and to describe our current state of understanding of their molecular underpinnings, relationship to invasive carcinomas, and implications for diagnosis and prognostication. Data Sources.--We assessed the current primary literature and current World Health Organization Classification of Digestive System Tumours. Conclusions.--Macroscopic cystic lesions of the pancreas are morphologically and molecularly diverse. IPMNs and MCNs share mucinous cytoplasm with papillae. MCNs are defined by ovarian-type stroma. IOPNs have granular eosinophilic cytoplasm, prominent nucleoli, and complex, arborizing papillae. ITPNs demonstrate complex, back-to-back tubules and anastomosing papillae and lack prominent intracellular mucin. IPMNs and MCNs are characterized by driver mutations in KRAS/ GNAS (IPMNs) and KRAS (MCNs), with later driver events in RNF43, CDKN2A, SMAD4, and TP53. In contrast, IOPNs and ITPNs have recurrent rearrangements in PRKACA/PRKACB and MAPK-associated genes, respectively. The recurrent alterations described in cysts provide an opportunity for diagnosis using aspirated cyst fluid. Molecular characterization of IPMNs shows a striking spatial and mutational heterogeneity, challenging traditional models of neoplastic development and creating challenges to interpretation of cyst fluid sequencing results. Abstract

We investigate the effect of nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) of hydrogen atoms on the elasticity of ice VII at high pressure and ambient temperature conditions using ab initio path-integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) calculations. We find that the NQEs of hydrogen contributes to the transition of ice VII from a static disordered structure to a dynamically disordered structure at pressures exceeding 40 GPa. This transition is marked by a discontinuous increase of the elastic constants. Comparison of ab initio molecular dynamics and PIMD calculations reveal that NQEs increase the elastic constants of ice by about 20% at 70 GPa and 300 K.

Abstract

Correctly identifying an individual's social context from passively worn sensors holds promise for delivering just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) to treat social anxiety disorder. In this study, we present results using passively collected data from a within-subject experiment that assessed physiological response across different social contexts (i.e, alone vs. with others), social phases (i.e., pre- and post-interaction vs. during an interaction), social interaction sizes (i.e., dyadic vs. group interactions), and levels of social threat (i.e., implicit vs. explicit social evaluation). Participants in the study ($N=46$) reported moderate to severe social anxiety symptoms as assessed by the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale ($\geq$34 out of 80). Univariate paired difference tests, multivariate random forest models, and follow-up cluster analyses were used to explore physiological response patterns across different social and non-social contexts. Our results suggest that social context is more reliably distinguishable than social phase, group size, or level of social threat, but that there is considerable variability in physiological response patterns even among these distinguishable contexts. Implications for real-world context detection and deployment of JITAIs are discussed.

Abstract

Traditionally defined, Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, include experiences of child maltreatment and other family problems such as domestic violence and parental incarceration. These ACEs are common, frequently co-occur, and are associated with a whole host of negative social outcomes, health risk behaviors, psychiatric and substance use disorders, and medical health problems. This report reviews the state of the science on programs designed to prevent ACEs and mitigate their negative effects, and surveys the Baltimore City landscape in terms of prevalence of ACEs and the availability of interventions to address ACEs. The recommendations derived from this report are organized into seven sections: (1) prevention; (2) intervention; (3) service systems; (4) community-wide initiatives; (5) structural; (6) policy; and (7) performance evaluation. The legislative recommendations outlined in the closing section of this report to prevent and/or reduce the impact of ACEs, proposed by the Maryland Essentials for Childhood and the State Council on Child Abuse and Neglect should be supported. Several other action-oriented recommendations to advance these efforts are offered.

Abstract

Background: Given reports of the adverse effects of COVID-19 on adolescent mental health, it is critical to understand how it impacts psychiatrically hospitalized youth who may be particularly vulnerable to its effects. Objective: This study aimed to advance our understanding of high-risk adolescents' experiences of COVID-19, including COVID-19-related stress, changes in daily functioning, and coping as they relate to suicidal ideation (SI). Method: Participants were 107 youth (ages 11-18; M = 15.06, SD = 1.79) admitted to an adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit during the time when the initial COVID-19 safety measures (i.e., school closure, stay-at-home-order) and reopening initiatives (Phase I, II, and III) were implemented in Rhode Island between March 13th and July 19th 2020. Adolescents completed measures of COVID-19-related stress, coping, functioning, and SI at the time of admission. Results: Nearly half of the sample (43%) reported a negative impact of COVID-19 on daily functioning. Youth who endorsed COVID-19-related decline in functioning evidenced higher levels of SI compared to youth with no change or improvement in functioning due to COVID-19. Overall levels of stress were not associated with SI. Greater coping repertoire, but not the use of specific coping strategies was associated with higher levels of SI. Conclusions: Findings demonstrate the importance of examining COVID-19-related changes in functioning and broadening repertoire of coping strategies among adolescents at high risk for SI.

Abstract

BackgroundThe etiology of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is poorly understood. To identify genes with predicted expression levels associated with FTD, we integrated summary statistics with external reference gene expression data using a transcriptome-wide association study approach.MethodsFUSION software was used to leverage FTD summary statistics (all FTD: n = 2154 cases, n = 4308 controls; behavioral variant FTD: n = 1337 cases, n = 2754 controls; semantic dementia: n = 308 cases, n = 616 controls; progressive nonfluent aphasia: n = 269 cases, n = 538 controls; FTD with motor neuron disease: n = 200 cases, n = 400 controls) from the International FTD-Genomics Consortium with 53 expression quantitative loci tissue type panels (n = 12,205; 5 consortia). Significance was assessed using a 5% false discovery rate threshold.ResultsWe identified 73 significant gene-tissue associations for FTD, representing 44 unique genes in 34 tissue types. Most significant findings were derived from dorsolateral prefrontal cortex splicing data (n = 19 genes, 26%). The 17q21.31 inversion locus contained 23 significant associations, representing 6 unique genes. Other top hits included SEC22B (a gene involved in vesicle trafficking), TRGV5, and ZNF302. A single gene finding (RAB38) was observed for behavioral variant FTD. For other clinical subtypes, no significant associations were observed.ConclusionsWe identified novel candidate genes (e.g., SEC22B) and previously reported risk regions (e.g., 17q21.31) for FTD. Most significant associations were observed in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex splicing data despite the modest sample size of this reference panel. This suggests that our findings are specific to FTD and are likely to be biologically relevant highlights of genes at different FTD risk loci that are contributing to the disease pathology.

Abstract

Early detection and prevention of psychosis has become an international priority. Much of this work has focused on youth presenting with attenuated symptoms of psychosis-those at Clinical High Risk for psychosis (CHR)-given their elevated probability of developing the full disorder in subsequent years. Individuals at CHR may be prone to exacerbated psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent physical isolation measures, due to heightened stress sensitivity and comorbid mental health problems. Telepsychotherapy holds promise for reaching this population, especially during the current COVID-19 outbreak. However, there are limited evidence-based guidelines or interventions for use of telepsychotherapy with this population. In this paper, we review common clinical issues for individuals at CHR and how they might be exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic; best practices for treatment and adaptations for telepsychotherapy for individuals at CHR; and highlight real clinical issues that we are currently experiencing in a United States-based specialized CHR clinic as we conduct telepsychotherapy via videoconferencing. We conclude with questions for those in the field to contemplate, as well as potential challenges and benefits in using telepsychotherapy with individuals at CHR and their families.

49. Psychosis-Spectrum Screening and Assessment within a College Counseling Center: A Pilot Study Exploring Feasibility and Clinical Need

Abstract

Evidence supports the use of brief psychosis-spectrum screening tools for identifying individuals at an increased risk of developing a psychotic disorder. Screening has not been well studied in general mental health settings that serve young adults in the age range associated with highest risk for psychosis. This study explored the feasibility of psychosis-risk screening and assessment among help-seeking students at a university counseling center. The PRIME Screen-Revised was administered to students at clinic intake. Participants who screened positively were offered a follow-up assessment using the Structured Interview for Psychosis-risk Syndromes (SIPS). At intake, 510 students completed the PRIME Screen-Revised, with 132 (25.9%) screening positive. Comprehensive psychosis-spectrum evaluations were completed with 38 participants, and 22 met criteria for a psychosis-spectrum disorder, representing 57.9% of this subsample. Findings suggest that psychosis-risk screening in a college clinic is a promising approach to identifying those at high risk for or in the early stages of psychosis.
