Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by impairments in social communication and social cognition. Difficulties in emotion understanding, from emotion recognition to emotion regulation are common features that can affect the inclusion process. One outstanding question is the extent to which age and IQ affect such impairments. The effect of IQ and age on emotion understanding was estimated in 55 children with ASD aged between 5 and 10 and with IQ ranging from 70 to 130. Emotion understanding and non-verbal cognitive ability were assessed, respectively, with the Test of Emotion Comprehension and the Leiter-R scale. The majority of participants scored significantly lower on the TEC compared to the normative sample. Performance compared against norms decreased with age and improved with increasing IQ; children with ‘borderline cognitive functioning’ performed significantly worse than children with ‘normative cognitive functioning’. Emotion understanding skills in children with ASD are affected by cognitive level and age. Implications for educational interventions are discussed

Abstract

This paper presents a study on social cognition development in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A six-month follow-up was conducted on 65 children aged four to ten with ASD compared to typically developing children. Children were pooled on three nonverbal mental age groups (4 to 5 years old, 5 to 7 years old, 7 years old and over)Children's theory of mind and understanding of emotions were assessed with two batteries of tests: the ToM Storybooks (Blijd-Hoogewys et al, 2003) and the TEC (Pons & Harris, 2000). Our results show that children's scores are improving over time for the two test batteries. We also find a development of this understanding according to mental age groups. Finally, in the development of social cognition, understanding false beliefs appears to be a particular difficulty for children with ASD.

Abstract

Item does not contain fulltext, The Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ'07) is a Canadian-English instrument recommended for screening children aged 5 to 15 years who are at risk for developmental coordination disorder. While a Canadian-French version of the DCDQ'07 presently exists, a European-French version does not. AIMS: To produce a cross-cultural adaptation of the DCDQ'07 for use in areas of Europe where French is spoken and to test its cultural relevance in French-speaking Switzerland. METHODS: Cross-cultural adaptation was done using established guidelines. Cultural relevance was analyzed with cognitive interviews of thirteen parents of children aged 5.0 to 14.6 years (mean age: 8.5 years, SD = 3.4), using think-aloud and probing techniques. RESULTS: Cultural and linguistic differences were noted between the European-French, the Canadian-French, and the original versions of the DCDQ'07. Despite correct translation and expert committee review, cognitive interviews revealed that certain items of the European-French version were unclear or misinterpreted and further modifications were needed. CONCLUSIONS: After rewording items as a result of the outcomes of the cognitive interview, the European-French version of the DCDQ'07 is culturally appropriate for use in French-speaking Switzerland. Further studies are necessary to determine its psychometric properties.

Abstract

The molecular ion-minus-ammonia [M - NHJ] fragmentation of (3-phenylpropyl) primary amines is a major contributor to the total ion current. This fragmentation occurs to a lesser extent in the lower and higher homologs, (2-phenethy1)- and (4-phenylbuty1)amine. The loss of methylamine and dimethylamine from N-methyl-(3-phenylpropyl)amine and N,N-dimethyl-(3-phenylpropy1)amine respectively is essentially absent. Deuterium labeling has shown that C-3 is the primary source of hydrogen abstracted in the [M  NHJ] fragmentation of (3-pheny1propyl)amine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by impairments in social communication and social cognition. Difficulties in emotion understanding, from emotion recognition to emotion regulation are common features that can affect the inclusion process. One outstanding question is the extent to which age and IQ affect such impairments. The effect of IQ and age on emotion understanding was estimated in 55 children with ASD aged between 5 and 10 and with IQ ranging from 70 to 130. Emotion understanding and non-verbal cognitive ability were assessed, respectively, with the Test of Emotion Comprehension and the Leiter-R scale. The majority of participants scored significantly lower on the TEC compared to the normative sample. Performance compared against norms decreased with age and improved with increasing IQ; children with ‘borderline cognitive functioning’ performed significantly worse than children with ‘normative cognitive functioning’. Emotion understanding skills in children with ASD are affected by cognitive level and age. Implications for educational interventions are discussed

Abstract

Preschool children with neurotypical development (ND) trained on sentential complements ("X thinks/says that") improve their Theory of Mind (ToM) performance. Can complementation training also enhance ToM in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)? Thirty-three children with ASD (Mage = 8;11) and 20 younger ND peers (Mage = 4;3) were trained on sentential complements (4-6 weeks, 2-3 times per week, via the DIRE i-Pad App). Pre-training and post-training comparisons show that (1) training boosted both complementation and ToM performance across groups; (2) improvements remained 4-6 weeks after training ended; (3) participants with milder ASD symptoms made most gains. Training on sentential complements thus seems beneficial for addressing ToM difficulties in children with ASD, especially those with milder symptoms., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

Abstract

Introduction: Intensive care unit patients are at risk for post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), which includes psychological, physical and/or cognitive sequelae after their hospital stay. Our aim was to investigate PICS in adult patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA)., Methods: In this prospective observational cohort study, we assessed risks for PICS at 3 and 12-month follow-up within the following domains: a) physical impairment (EuroQol [EQ-5D-3L]), b) cognitive functioning (Cerebral Performance Category [CPC] score >1, modified Rankin Scale [mRS] >2) and c) psychological burden (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale [HADS], Impact of Event Scale-Revised [IES-R])., Results: At 3 months, 69/139 patients (50%) met the definition of PICS including 37% in the physical domain, 25% in the cognitive domain and 13% in the psychological domain. Intubation (OR 2.3, 95%CI 1.1 to 5,0 p = 0.03), sedatives (OR 3.4, 95%CI 1 to 11, p = 0.045), mRS at discharge (OR 4.3, 95%CI 1.70 to 11.01, p = 0.002), CPC at discharge (OR 3.3, 95%CI 1.4 to 7.6, p = 0.005) and post-discharge work loss (OR 13.4, 95%CI 1.7 to 107.5, p = 0.014) were significantly associated with PICS. At 12 months, 52/110 (47%) patients had PICS, which was associated with prolonged duration of rehabilitation, higher APACHE scores, and higher mRS and CPC scores at hospital discharge., Conclusions: Nearly half of long-term OHCA survivors show PICS after 3 and 12 months. These high numbers call for more emphasis on appropriate screening and treatment in this patient population. Abstract

Background: Although bedside case presentation contributes to patient-centered care through active patient participation in medical discussions, the complexity of medical information and jargon-induced confusion may cause misunderstandings and patient discomfort., Objective: To compare bedside versus outside the room patient case presentation regarding patients' knowledge about their medical care., Design: Randomized, controlled, parallel-group trial. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT03210987)., Setting: 3 Swiss teaching hospitals., Patients: Adult medical patients who were hospitalized., Intervention: Patients were randomly assigned to bedside or outside the room case presentation., Measurements: The primary endpoint was patients' average knowledge of 3 dimensions of their medical care (each rated on a visual analogue scale from 0 to 100): understanding their disease, the therapeutic approach being used, and further plans for care., Results: Compared with patients in the outside the room group ( n = 443), those in the bedside presentation group ( n = 476) reported similar knowledge about their medical care (mean, 79.5 points [SD, 21.6] vs. 79.4 points [SD, 19.8]; adjusted difference, 0.09 points [95% CI, -2.58 to 2.76 points]; P = 0.95). Also, an objective rating of patient knowledge by the study team was similar for the 2 groups, but the bedside presentation group had higher ratings of confusion about medical jargon and uncertainty caused by team discussions. Bedside ward rounds were more efficient (mean, 11.89 minutes per patient [SD, 4.92] vs. 14.14 minutes per patient [SD, 5.65]; adjusted difference, -2.31 minutes [CI, -2.98 to -1.63 minutes]; P < 0.001)., Limitation: Only Swiss hospitals and medical patients were included., Conclusion: Compared with outside the room case presentation, bedside case presentation was shorter and resulted in similar patient knowledge, but sensitive topics were more often avoided and patient confusion was higher. 49. Communicative Functions in Children Raised in Three Different Social Contexts in Colombia: The Key Issue of Joint Attention.

Abstract

Children's sociocultural experiences vary around the world. Colombia is a South American country where the differences between socioeconomic statuses (SES) are huge. In this study, through the ECSP-E Scale, translated to Spanish and validated for linguistic and cultural equivalence, the development of three communicative functions was evaluated through an interactive sociopragmatic approach. The participants comprised 36 24-month-old children, raised in three different social contexts in Colombia, with the goal of comparing them across groups of SES. The lowest SES group sample subjects were representative of extreme poverty and members of an ethnic group, the Wayuú. Results for the communicative functions, namely social interaction (SI), joint attention (JA), and behavior regulation (BR), showed that the only function with no significant differences across SES was joint attention. This supports the hypothesis that the development of this function may be universal, in light of the fact that the Wayuú not only differed from other subjects in terms of their socioeconomic status but also in their culture. Higher SES was related to better social interaction, while Low SES was associated with better behavior regulation than their High SES peers. 50. Association of Taurine with In-Hospital Mortality in Patients after Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: Results from the Prospective, Observational COMMUNICATE Study.

Abstract

Background: Studies have suggested that taurine may have neuro- and cardio-protective functions, but there is little research looking at taurine levels in patients after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Our aim was to evaluate the association of taurine with mortality and neurological deficits in a well-defined cohort of OHCA patients., Methods: We prospectively measured serum taurine concentration in OHCA patients upon admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the University Hospital Basel (Switzerland). We analyzed the association of taurine levels and in-hospital mortality (primary endpoint). We further evaluated neurological outcomes assessed by the cerebral performance category scale. We calculated logistic regression analyses and report odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). We calculated different predefined multivariable regression models including demographic variables, comorbidities, initial vital signs, initial blood markers and resuscitation measures. We assessed discrimination by means of area under the receiver operating curve (ROC)., Results: Of 240 included patients, 130 (54.2%) survived until hospital discharge and 110 (45.8%) had a favorable neurological outcome. Taurine levels were significantly associated with higher in-hospital mortality (adjusted OR 4.12 (95%CI 1.22 to 13.91), p = 0.02). In addition, a significant association between taurine concentration and a poor neurological outcome was observed (adjusted OR of 3.71 (95%CI 1.13 to 12.25), p = 0.03). Area under the curve (AUC) suggested only low discrimination for both endpoints (0.57 and 0.57, respectively)., Conclusion: Admission taurine levels are associated with mortality and neurological outcomes in OHCA patients and may help in the risk assessment of this vulnerable population. Further studies are needed to assess whether therapeutic modulation of taurine may improve clinical outcomes after cardiac arrest.
