1. Occurrence of drug target residues within decantation tank sediments: a good clue to assess their historical excretion?

Abstract: Abstract This study investigated the potential of sediments accumulated in sewer systems to record human activities through the occurrence of drug target residues (DTR). The installation studied is 17 m deep underground decantation tank that traps the coarse fractions of a unitary sewer system (northern part of Orléans, France), collecting both stormwater and wastewater. The sediments deposited in this tank could constitute a nonesuch opportunity to study the historical evolution of illicit and licit drug consumption in the catchment, however, the deposition processes and the record of DTRs remain largely unknown at present. Five cores were acquired from 2015 to 2017. One hundred fifty-two sediment samples were extracted using a mixture of ultra-pure water:methanol (1:1) prior to analysis of the extracts by high-pressure liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. Several classical sedimentological analyses such as total organic carbon, facies description and granulometry were also performed on these samples, in order to understand the most important factors (e.g., physico-chemical properties of the DTRs, solid type, assumed load in wastewater) impacting their deposition. The key role of the speciation of DTRs was highlighted by the higher contents in neutral and anionic DTRs in organic layers, whereas only cationic DTRs were found in mineral layers. The considerable modifications in the sediments’ properties, generated by distinct origins (i.e., stormwater or wastewater), are therefore the most important drivers that must be taken into account when back-calculating the historical patterns of drug consumption from their DTR concentrations in decantation tank sediments. Further research remains necessary to fully understand the deposition process, but this study provides new clues explaining these temporal evolutions.

Abstract: International audience; Some trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) can be considered as ubiquitous contaminants since the 1950s, and the study of their historical distribution within river sediments allows us to better understand the temporal variation of the chemical quality of sediments, and make assumptions about the most insightful forcings impacting these distributions. In this study, the occurrence of 41 TrOCs of various classes (i.e. pharmaceutical products and pesticides) was studied in a sedimentary core sampled in a disused dock along the Seine River, France. This core covers a 60 year-long period between 1944 and 2003, and 23 TrOCs were detected at least once. Their concentrations mainly ranged between 1 and 10 ng g-1 within the core, except for tetracycline that exhibited higher concentrations (~hundreds of ng.g-1). The dating of the core, based on previous studies, enabled the characterization of the changes since 1945, potentially impacted by (i) the sewer connectivity, (ii) the upgrading of wastewater treatment technologies, (iii) historical modifications in the use of each TrOC, and (iv) the sedimentary composition. In every case the deepest occurrence of each TrOC in the core matched its market authorization date, indicating the potential of TrOC to be used as chronomarkers. This study also reveals that the recent upgrading of wastewater treatment technologies within the 2 watershed decreased the concentrations of each TrOC, despite an increase in TrOC diversity in the most recent years.

Abstract: International audience; Pharmaceutical products (PPs) are consumed worldwide and are continuously released into hydrological environments, but are not efficiently removed by sewage treatment plants. Their occurrence within the dissolved phase has been extensively studied, but only a few articles concern solid matrices. The mechanisms and extent of sorption depend on the properties of both the molecules (degradability, charge, hydrophobicity) and the matrices (clay content, organic matter content), making the spatio-temporal distribution of PPs in natural environments complex and poorly elucidated. To improve our understanding of PP distribution at a catchment scale, this study investigated different groups of molecules with varying solubility and charges, in water, suspended particulate matter, bed-load and pond sediments. The Egoutier stream, which collects the sewage effluents from two health institutions sewage effluents, is a good candidate for this investigation. Results indicate that PP occurrences in the different particulate compartments were mainly regulated by their wastewater occurrences and charges. Particulate phases all along the Egoutier stream were characterized by a limited clay content (i.e. less than 1%) and significant organic carbon content (i.e. between 0.3% and 18.0%) favouring non-specific adsorption. Therefore, neutral PPs, exhibiting higher discharge rates, persistence and hydrophobicities in comparison with cationic and anionic molecules, were the most abundant PPs in the particulate phases of this catchment. In bed-load sediments, global PP spatial distributions reflected discharge sites and sedimentary accumulation zones, mostly that of organic matter. Spatial distributions of the more hydrophobic and persistent PP in the particulate phases thus followed the stream sedimentary dynamic.

Abstract: Wastewaters are highly contaminated waters by anthropogenic compounds. To limit the propagation of these contaminants in water bodies and allow safe reuse of this resource, sewage treatment plants were developed. For the last few decades, many studies evidenced the partial cleaning efficiency of these systems. Many compounds, such as pharmaceuticals, are therefore designated as emerging contaminants. Most of the studies investigated sewage treatment plants releasing rates, but spatial and temporal behaviours of pharmaceuticals in natural environments received less attention. In this study, 27 pharmaceuticals were investigated into both water, bed-load sediments and suspended particles from a small tributary of the Loire River: a peri-urban stream named Egoutier (Loiret, France). The catchment area of the Egoutier is characterized by an upstream/downstream anthropogenic gradient and the presence of two sewage stations whose effluents are released in the watercourse: one coming from the Central Army Pharmacy, a second one draining a psychiatric hospital and a last one defining a bad connection of the pluvial piping system. Only 13 pharmaceuticals were found in our samples. Cationic compounds, such as doxepin, metoprolol, atenolol, codeine and trimethoprim, were mostly adsorbed on mineral phases, except tramadol appearing mostly associated with organic matter, like the anionic and neutral compounds, such as sulfamethoxazole, ibuprofen, diclofenac, acetaminophen, diazepam, carbamazepine and oxazepine. High spatial and temporal variabilities were observed. Bed-load geochemistry fluctuations appear linked to the sedimentary dynamic from both suspended particles and organic matter. In the suspended particles fraction, pharmaceuticals contents seem to be driven by grain-size distribution. Variations in pharmaceutical inputs and low half-life of some molecules also have an influence on both particulate fractions contents. In this way, some compounds highly biodegradable, such as acetaminophen, are accumulated near to their emission zones, while other molecules highly transported in suspended particles, for example diazepam, are transported over the stream and mostly accumulated in bed-load sediments during dry periods. On the contrary, compounds adsorb on coarser particles, such as trimethoprim, have higher propagation distances during humid periods. Some molecules could be used as sourcing markers. Indeed, codeine is for example exclusively released by the psychiatric hospital. This study improve the understanding of pharmaceuticals adsorption, dispersion and accumulation in receiving environments. 8. Trace organic contaminants within solid matrices along an anthropized watercourse: Organo-mineral controls on their spatial distribution

Abstract: Although numerous studies have determined significant contamination in terms of trace organic contaminant (TrOC) diversity and concentration, the occurrence of TrOCs within solid matrices as suspended solids and sediments flies under the radar. In this study, the occurrence of 35 TrOCs of various classes (i.e. pharmaceutical products and pesticides) was investigated in three compartments, namely dissolved phase, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments, within an anthropized river in France. The sampling was performed to assess the spatial contamination dynamics and the impact of a major wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), under two contrasted hydrological conditions, i.e. base level and flood conditions. Solid samples were finely characterized (XRD, grainsize, TOC) in order to assess the impact of organic and mineral composition on the sorption extent of TrOCs. The study reveals that the clear spatial pattern of contamination in water samples, mostly generated by the effluent discharge of WWTPs, is less clear in solid matrices as the variability of the organo-mineral composition of such samples strongly impacts their favourability for sorption. Moreover, the flood event strongly impacted the sedimentary compartment, remobilizing fine and TrOC contaminated particles that were further found in suspended particulate matter. Lastly, the representativeness of contaminant diversity and concentration within the solid matrices displayed more favourable insights for SPM.

Abstract: International audience; Global Trimethoprim (TMP) and Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) occurrences in raw wastewaters were systematically collected from the literature (n=140 articles) in order to assess the relevance of using the SMX/TMP ratio as a marker of the main origin of wastewaters. These two antibiotics were selected due to their frequent use in association (i.e. co-trimoxazole) in a 5:1 ratio (SMX:TMP) for medication purposes, generating a unique opportunity to globally evaluate the validity of this ratio based on concentration values. Several parameters (e.g. sorption, biodegradation) may affect the theoretical SMX/TMP ratio. However, the collected data highlighted the good agreement between the theoretical ratio and the experimental one, especially in wastewater treatment plant influents and hospital effluents. Only livestock effluents displayed a very high SMX/TMP ratio, indicative of the very significant use of sulfonamide alone in this industry. Conversely, several countries displayed low SMX/TMP ratio values, highlighting local features in the human pharmacopoeia. This review provides new insights in order to develop an easy to handle and sound marker of wastewater origins (i.e. human/livestock), beyond atypical local customs.

Abstract: International audience; The occurrence of pharmaceutical products (PPs) within environmental compartments challenges the scientific community and water treatment operators to find suitable and practicable removal solutions. Clay minerals are among the oldest and cheapest adsorbents used for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants. However, despite their significant adsorption properties, little is known about their potential to remove organic contaminants such as pharmaceutical products from wastewater effluents. Hence, based on the latest published articles this review aims to standardize the adsorption properties of clay minerals for the removal of PPs. Specifically, the charge state of PPs appears to play a key role in their adsorption mechanism. In order to overcome the limitations of batch experiments (i.e. idealized solutions, static conditions) and design of a field solution, the impact of external parameters on the adsorption capacities of clay minerals is reviewed. The effect of thermal treatment and acid activation of clay minerals is also assessed in order to better understand the consequences of such modifications on the adsorption properties of clay-based adsorbents. Finally, even if most authors agree on the potential of clay-based adsorbents for the removal of PPs from wastewater, there remain significant gaps in the existing literature that need to be filled, with the aim of forecasting the real potential of clay-based treatment for the removal of pharmaceutical products at industrial scale.

Abstract: International audience; For a better understanding of the preservation of organic matter in clay minerals, the adsorption of a model humic substance, the Gallic Acid (GA), onto a Na-montmorillonite (NaeMt) was performed in batch situation for various experimental conditions (pH = 2, 5, 7) in order to mimic the natural context. The adsorption efficiency and change in the clay mineral were characterized via a set of complementary experimental techniques (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses). Adsorption isotherms at the equilibrium were fitted with the models of Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevitch allowing one to precisely quantify the adsorption through the derived fitting parameters. From the adsorption data combined with complementary results of the modeled humic-clay complexes, different types of interactional mechanisms were inferred as a function of background acidity: (i) at pH = 2 while protonated GA was the preponderant form, anionic GA species can be adsorbed to the Na-Mt surface through electrostatic interaction, leading to the a slight covering of the clay surface favoring in a second step the GA adsorption by π-π and Van der Waals forces; XRD patterns corroborated via TGA and FT/IR results suggested the actual intercalation of the phenolic acid within the interlayer space; (ii) At pH = 5, above the pKa of phenolic acid, only 20% of the protonated form subsisted and these species were adsorbed via coordinative bonding, without however any perceptible intercalation; (iii) and in the regime with neutral environment (pH = 7), the preponderance of GA anionic species led to a poor adsorption which appeared to be only located at the external surface of the clay mineral.

Abstract: International audience; The adsorption of pharmaceutical products (PPs) onto kaolinite and raw and sodium-exchanged montmorillonite was investigated in real wastewater effluents (WWE). The important role of the charge state of the PPs in controlling the adsorption extent was highlighted. Whereas cationic PPs were mostly adsorbed through cation exchange, the adsorption of neutral and anionic PPs appeared to be controlled by the nature of compensating inorganic cations and/or the simultaneous adsorption of organic moieties onto clay minerals. In raw WWE, the concentration of PPs is indeed far lower than the concentration of other organic molecules. Among the adsorbents tested, kaolinite displayed the lowest adsorption capacity of both PPs and other organic molecules, compared to raw montmorillonite which presented the highest adsorption capacity. The sodium-exchanged montmorillonite displayed intermediate adsorption properties, highlighting the key role of divalent inorganic cations in the adsorption of non-cationic PPs and other organic molecules. Hence, raw montmorillonite appears to be the most promising adsorbent for further investigations aiming to test the practicability of a clay-based adsorbent for the removal of organic contaminants, such as PPs, in WWE.

Abstract: International audience; The Earth system is enduring a unique transition in its history due to the pregnancy of human activities on geological processes compared to natural controls. A large community examines the extent to which these activities will be archived in the sedimentary record and remain for millions years within a new geological era named Anthropocene. Here we explore the potential of sediments that accumulated in sewer systems for such a record of human posterity, considering that urban socio-ecosystems are prone to a large diversity and high concentrations of potential tracers of human activities.

Abstract: International audience; The temporal dynamics of the wastewater influent loads of 25 drug target residues (DTR, both pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs) was assessed during 84 consecutive days. This monitoring scale enables longer temporal patterns than weekday/weekend patterns to be explored. In this study, we focus on day to day variations and the potential statistical correlation of each DTR analyzed in order to better understand the potential forcings that lead to the load variation of DTRs (alone or in clusters). The weekly patterns based on the weekly loads of DTRs were also analyzed and the impact of social and meteorological events on their variations was investigated.Two cold events occurred during the monitoring period and were associated with the highest loads of analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, as well as the lowest loads of stimulants. During the Easter holidays, a significant decrease in some year-long medication as well as analgesics was found, consistent with the demographic decrease within the catchment during this period. Lastly, a good correlation between the academic calendar and the loads of stimulants was found, emphasizing the overrepresentation of students in the consumption of recreational drugs.This study furnishes new insights in order to better understand the variations in DTR loads in wastewater influents, beyond the weekday/weekend pattern and the seasonal effect. Further investigations remain necessary, especially a real-time monitoring of the population figures within the catchment in order to improve our understanding of these results.

Abstract: International audience; The adsorption of psychoactive drugs (PADs) onto sodium-exchanged montmorillonite (Na—Mt) was investigated under two pH conditions. At pH = 2.5, the adsorption was performed through cation exchange and the three PADs were intercalated within the Na—Mt layers. However, the adsorption capacity was lower than the theoretical cation exchange capacity of Na—Mt due to the impact of the acidic conditions on the adsorbent. At pH = 7.5, only Codeine was protonated and its adsorption through cation exchange resulted in the highest amount adsorbed among the tested PADs. Diazepam was adsorbed through weak electrostatic interactions, whereas Oxazepam appeared to be intercalated within Na—Mt layers despite its neutral charge. Consequently, the variation in pH strongly impacts the affinity of PADs for Na—Mt. These initial results highlight the impact of raw clay on the fate of these contaminants within environmental compartments and could pave the way for a green solution to the removal of PADs from wastewater effluents.

Abstract: International audience; In the work "the multi-mechanisms and interlayer configurations of metoprolol uptake on montmorillonite", published in Chemical Engineering Journal, montmorillonite are used as an an adsorbent for the uptake of metoprolol under various experimental conditions. The results are interesting but the authors has made a mistake when assessing the speciation of metoprolol. This β-blocker is mostly neutral rather than zwitterionic for pH values up to pKa1. This mistake may induce confusion and false conclusions for the readers of Chemical Engineering Journal unfamiliar with such organic contaminants, especially when assessing the impact of pH on the adsorption mechanisms of metoprolol onto clay minerals.

Abstract: International audience; The synthesis of zwitterionic-surfactant modified Laponites® (LAP-CBs) was investigated as a function of the surfactant loading in order to obtain suitable adsorbent for the removal of Co2+, Sr2+ and Cs+ ions from aqueous solutions. The proper adsorption of surfactant was characterized by several techniques allowing to emphasize the modification of the surfactant distribution between the interlayer space and the surface of Laponite® (LAP), with increasing the load of surfactant. The organophilic character of the obtained LAP-CBs strongly affected its affinity with the targeted contaminants. The adsorption of Sr2+ was lowered onto LAP-CBs in comparison to LAP, while the adsorption of Co2+ and Cs+ were strongly improved. The competition between Sr2+ and Cs+ was important onto LAP-CBs, whereas no competition was found when using LAP, indicating different adsorption mechanisms depending on the adsorbent. The desorption of contaminants was performed in various solutions and confirmed these mechanisms. Whereas Cs+ and Sr2+ were adsorbed through cation exchange onto LAP-CBs, as highlighted by a significant desorption in saline solution, the desorption of Co2+ from LAP-CBs was very poor whatever the composition of the solution indicating rather a complexation. Finally, the increase of the load of surfactant decreased the adsorption capacity of all the investigated contaminants. The arrangement of the surfactant, within the interlayer space or on the surface of LAP, was therefore of high concern when considering the potential of this material to durably remove radionuclides from low-level radioactive wastewaters.

Abstract: International audience; The occurrence of 25 drug target residues (illicit drugs or pharmaceutically active compounds) was investigated during 85 consecutive days in the influents of a wastewater treatment plant in the Region Centre-Val de Loire, France. This long tracking period allowed a better understanding of the patterns affecting the occurrence of this type of contaminants. Among them, 2 were never detected (i.e. heroin and amphetamine). Concerning illicit drugs two patterns were found. Cocaine and ecstasy median loads varied considerably between weekdays and weekend days (i.e. 18.3 and 35.9 % respectively) whereas cannabis and heroin (based on 6-mono-acetylmorphine loads) loads were within the same order of magnitude with a significant statistical correlation with pharmaceuticals such as acetaminophen or ketoprofen. 2 The consumption of selected drugs was back-calculated from the loads. Among illicit drugs the highest consumption was found for cannabis with a median consumption of 51 mg.day-1 .inhabitant-1 (inh) whereas the median consumption for cocaine (based on benzoylecgonine loads) and ecstasy was 32 and 6 mg.day-1 .10 3 .inh-1 respectively. The highest consumption values of pharmaceutically active compounds (PACs) were found for acetaminophen and acetylsalicylic acid with 108.8 and 34.1 mg.day-1 .inh-1 respectively, in good agreement with national sales data. A statistically significant weekly pattern was found for several PACs such as metoprolol and trimethoprim, but with the opposite pattern to that of illicit drugs. The variations in daily PAC loads could provide information about the mobility of people in the catchment, especially on the basis of daily taken PACs (i.e. to treat chronicle diseases).

Abstract: In this study, silylated Laponites&reg, (LAP) were synthetized with various loads of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to evaluate their adsorption properties of 133Cs, 59Co, and 88Sr during single-solute and competitive experiments. The increase in the initial load of APTES increased the adsorbed amount of APTES in the resulted grafted clay. The characterization of LAP-APTES exhibited a covalent binding between APTES and LAP and emphasized the adsorption sites of APTES for each tested load. In comparison with raw LAP, LAP-APTES displayed significantly higher adsorption properties of Co2+, Cs+, and Sr2+. The competitive adsorption of these three contaminants provides a deeper understanding of the affinity between adsorbate and adsorbent. Therefore, Co2+ displayed a strong and specific adsorption onto LAP-APTES. Except for Cs+, the adsorption capacity was improved with increasing the load of APTES. Finally, the desorption behavior of the three contaminants was tested in saline solutions. Cs+ and Sr2+ were significantly released especially by inorganic cations displaying the same valence. Conversely, desorption of Co2+ was very low whatever the saline solution. LAP-APTES, therefore, presented suitable adsorption properties for the removal of radionuclides especially for Co2+, making this material suitable to improve the decontamination of radioactive wastewaters.

Abstract: International audience; The occurrence of 15 pharmaceutically active compounds (PACs) in an urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was assessed in both influent and effluent samples. PACs were quantified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The sampling campaign was carried out during summer (n = 13) to assess the variation in both the influent concentrations and the removal efficiencies in similar climatic conditions. Among the selected PACs, all were quantified in influent samples but two of them were not systematically detected mainly due to the high quantification limit. PACs were detected at µg.L-1 levels with a maximum concentration of 96.7 µg.L-1 for Acetaminophen. The mean mass balance of the whole PAC pool during tracking was 448.5 and 26.3 g.day-1 in influents and effluents respectively. However, the removal efficiency varied depending on the sample (e.g. between -20 and 50 % for Diclofenac). The fate of PACs during water treatment therefore depends on the removal quality in general, highlighted by the removal of nitrogen or BOD5. As a result, effluent concentrations were variable, unlike influent concentrations which were used to correctly assess the consumption behavior of the population around the sampled WWTP. Although the daily mass loads were comparable with those found in other studies in Europe for the same type of WWTP, the estimated consumption sometimes exhibited significant differences with the theoretical one. These differences depend on the mode of consumption, i.e. whether the therapeutic class treats chronic or episodic diseases, and on the scale gap between estimated and theoretical concentrations.

Abstract: International audience; The removal of a Pharmaceutically Active Compound (PhAC) pool using a well referenced clay mineral from Wyoming (SWy-2) as geosorbent was studied for a better understanding of their environmental fate. As expected, the selected material shows its particular adsorption properties to PhAC under different experimental conditions with two main features depending on the chemical nature of the emerging micro-pollutants. Cationic PhACs, for which the driving force for their adsorption results to electrostatic interaction via the exchange with the inorganic cations of the clay mineral, are almost completely removed for all studied experimental conditions where it appears that S/L ratio plays a minor role and the only one limitation for their removal is the cation exchange capacity of the adsorbent. In contrast, anionic and neutral PhACs are adsorbed to the clay mineral surface (silanol groups on the sheet edges, inorganic cations…) through other interactional mechanisms involving ion-dipole, Van der Waals interaction, leading to a competition of the whole organic molecules where their chemical nature (electric charge, hydrophobicity) may also play for their adsorption. While the adsorption of ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and salicylic acid anionic PhACs slightly increases with the increase of the S/L ratio, the removal of the neutral and the other anionic PhACs (gemfibrozil and ibuprofen) seems to be independent of that ratio and is particularly enhanced. The efficiency of the removal for a global pool of PhACs even in low S/L ratio stresses out the control of the selected natural minerals on the dynamic of PhACs in the environment.

Abstract: Accepted Manuscript; International audience; Among pharmaceutical products (PPs) recalcitrant to water treatments, diclofenac shows a high toxicity and remains at high concentration in natural aquatic environments. The aim of this study concerns the understanding of the adsorption mechanism of this anionic PP onto two organoclays prepared with two long-alkyl chains cationic surfactants showing different chemical nature for various experimental pH and temperature conditions. The experimental data obtained by a set of complementary techniques (X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses, gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and the use of Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevish equation models, reveal that organoclays show a good affinity to diclofenac which is enhanced as the temperature is under 35°C and for pH above 4.5 (i.e. > pKa of diclofenac) while the chemical nature of surfactant appears to play a minor role. The thermodynamic parameters derived from the fitting procedure point out the strong electrostatic interaction with organic cations adsorbed within the interlayer space in the organoclays for the adsorption of diclofenac. This study stress out the application of organoclays for the adsorption of a recalcitrant PPs in numerous aquatic compartments that can be used as a complement with activated carbon for waste water treatment.

Abstract: International audience; The objective of the study was to evaluate the sorption of a pool of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) onto a clay-sand filter in a dynamic sorption experiment. The chosen adsorbent should have suitable chemical properties for the removal of the targeted PhACs and also consistent hydrodynamic behavior regarding field application. In this aim, the impact of interfoliar cation (Ca 2+ or Na +) intercalated into natural montmorillonite (Swy2) was tested by using different clay-sand ratios (from 0% to 100% of clay minerals). Only Ca-Swy2 showed a consistent hydraulic conductivity for field application with a value of 4.78 x 10-8 m.s-1 for 5%-95% clay-sand ratio. The sorption of PhACs onto this filter was investigated using oedometer cells by varying two parameters, the solution matrix (ultra-pure water or natural effluent) and the injection pressure (0.1 MPa and 0.2 MPa). PhACs were effectively adsorbed onto the filter for each experiment at different levels. The drop in injection pressure was a favorable factor for sorption whatever the matrix, with median global removal of ~45% at 0.2 MPa and ~75% at 0.1 Mpa. The effect of the matrix exhibited two different trends as a function of the molecular charge of each PhAC. While cationic compounds were more effectively sorbed in the ultra-pure water matrix than in effluent matrix the sorption of anionic PhACs was more effective in the effluent matrix than in ultra-pure water. This indicates that the charge of the pollutant is a key parameter controlling the efficiency of the adsorbent. Despite these removal variations, the filter exhibited a significant sorption capacity especially at 0.1 MPa. It can therefore be an efficient solution for the removal of PhACs by tertiary filtration.

Abstract: International audience; A sodium exchanged smectite clay mineral (Mt) was used as geo-sorbent for the adsorption of tramadol and doxepin: two pharmaceutical products (PPs) defined as emerging pollutants due to their presence at significant concentration in numerous water compartments. The adsorption isotherms for both the temperatures of 20 and 40 °C and the derived data determined through the fitting procedure by using Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin–Radushkevich equation models explicitly pointed out that the sorption of both tramadol and doxepin is mainly driven by electrostatic interaction. The studied PPs are intercalated in a monolayer arrangement within the interlayer space through a cation exchange in stoichiometric proportion with the Na+ cations leading to adsorbed PPs amounts that match the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of Mt. Due to their hydrophobic character, additional doxepin molecules could be adsorbed by weak molecular interaction driving to an increase of the adsorbed amount beyond the CEC at low temperature (20 °C). The confinement of PPs within the interlayer space of Mt confirms the use of clay minerals as potential material for the wastewater treatment as well as it drives to an amorphous or glassy state, which can find echo in biopharmaceutical applications for a controlled release of PPs.

Abstract: International audience; IntroductionHuman activities are being registered by an unprecedented variety and concentration of markers in the sedimentary record. This is the founding concept of the Anthropocene for which a lower boundary was set at 1945 (Zalasiewicz et al., 2016) and a Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) is currently under examination (Waters et al., 2018). Within the Golden Spike project (BIOHEFECT-EC2CO, CNRS-INSU) we propose that sedimentary archives deposited in sewer networks of urban areas constitute targets for Anthropocene GSSP because they are susceptible of recording a high diversity of concentrated matters, elements, biomarkers and isotopes of human origin through time. Before exploring such sediments, we investigate their potential as archives, i.e. the factors affecting their deposition processes, the availability of pertinent tracers and the controls on their archivability.

Abstract: International audience; Pharmaceutical products (PPs) represent nowadays a common pollution in aquatic environments. The PPs consumption have increased decade after decade all over the world leading to a pollution of numerous water compartments whereas no efficient water treatment has been done. Indeed, actual Waste-Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) show limited solution in the removal of emerging organic micro-pollutants. A complete improvement of water treatment could be realistic if the associated treatment costs are controlled, Results of such unsuitable treatment drives to a constant overflow of numerous micro-pollutants, including PPs in natural waters. Today, this spillage has well-documented consequences on the biota, the human health, various ecosystems and shows a severe environment impact in general (Fent et al., 2006). Drugs concentrations vary between µg.L-1 and some ng.L-1. The entire aqueous environments are actually contaminated as shown by the abundant and various scientific publications on this subject. Namely, effluents of WWTP's (Kostich et al., 2014), river waters (Loos et al., 2009), groundwater (Lapworth et al., 2012), marine waters (McEneff et al., 2014) and sediments (Petrović et al., 2001). The ability of sediments and more particularly organic matter (OM) and the clay fraction to trap some drugs has been highlighted with the warning study on hormones. From the numerous studies led on this environmental problematic, mineralogy of clay and the nature of organic matter are the main actors for the sequestration/adsorption of emerging organic pollutants(Stein et al., 2008). Therefore, two different natural matrices were chosen in this study: sewage sludge of a rural phytoplanted filter and natural sediments in an urban system.
