Previous continuum observations from the MUSTANG camera on the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) of the nearby star-forming filament OMC 2/3 found elevated emission at 3.3 mm relative to shorter wavelength data. As a consequence, the inferred dust emissivity index obtained from modified black body dust spectra was considerably lower than what is typically measured on $\sim 0.1 \, {\rm pc}$ scales in nearby molecular clouds. Here we present new observations of OMC 2/3 collected with the MUSTANG-2 camera on the GBT which confirm this elevated emission. We also present for the first time sensitive 1 cm observations made with the Ka-band receiver on the GBT which also show higher than expected emission. We use these observations--- along with Herschel, JCMT, Mambo, and GISMO data--- to assemble spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a variety of structures in OMC 2/3 spanning the range $160 \, {\rm \mu m}$ to $1 \, {\rm cm}$. The data at 2 mm and shorter are generally consistent with a modified black body spectrum and a single value of $\beta \sim 1.6$. The 3 mm and 1 cm data, however, lie well above such an SED. The spectrum of the long wavelength excess is inconsistent with both free-free emission and standard "Spinning Dust" models for Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME). The 3 mm and 1 cm data could be explained by a flatter dust emissivity at wavelengths shorter than 2 mm, potentially in concert with AME in some regions., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, ApJ (in press)

The initial steps of star formation are now believed to be tightly linked to the dynamical evolution of interstellar filaments. Mass accretion from large scales in the form of sub-filaments seems to play a key role for the formation of massive filaments with A V > 100 mag, a criterion satisfied by ridges. In this contribution, we discuss the very close-by ridge G351.77–0.51, identified as the closest dense filament in the ATLASGAL survey of the inner Galactic plane. G351.77–0.51 is actively forming massive stars in at least two positions and other dust clumps have the potential to form intermediate to high-mass young stellar objects. It also exhibits a remarkable large-scale network of filamentary structures seen in extinction at 8 μ m which extend over the whole length of the ridge. The sub-filaments have the same velocity as the ridge. Their mass shows that mass-replenishment is probably still on-going in the source.

We carried out multiwavelength (0.7-5 cm), multiepoch (1994-2015) Very Large Array (VLA) observations toward the region enclosing the bright far-IR sources FIR 3 (HOPS 370) and FIR 4 (HOPS 108) in OMC-2. We report the detection of 10 radio sources, seven of them identified as young stellar objects. We image a well-collimated radio jet with a thermal free-free core (VLA 11) associated with the Class I intermediate-mass protostar HOPS 370. The jet presents several knots (VLA 12N, 12C, 12S) of non-thermal radio emission (likely synchrotron from shock-accelerated relativistic electrons) at distances of ~7,500-12,500 au from the protostar, in a region where other shock tracers have been previously identified. These knots are moving away from the HOPS 370 protostar at ~ 100 km/s. The Class 0 protostar HOPS 108, which itself is detected as an independent, kinematically decoupled radio source, falls in the path of these non-thermal radio knots. These results favor the previously proposed scenario where the formation of HOPS 108 has been triggered by the impact of the HOPS 370 outflow with a dense clump. However, HOPS 108 presents a large proper motion velocity of ~ 30 km/s, similar to that of other runaway stars in Orion, whose origin would be puzzling within this scenario. Alternatively, an apparent proper motion could result because of changes in the position of the centroid of the source due to blending with nearby extended emission, variations in the source shape, and /or opacity effects., 16 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present CARMA CO (J=1-0) observations and Herschel PACS spectroscopy, characterizing the outflow properties toward extremely young and deeply embedded protostars in the Orion molecular clouds. The sample comprises a subset of the Orion protostars known as the PACS Bright Red Sources (PBRS) (Stutz et al. 2013). We observed 14 PBRS with CARMA and 8 of these 14 with Herschel, acquiring full spectral scans from 55 micron to 200 micron. Outflows are detected in CO (J=1-0) from 8 of 14 PBRS, with two additional tentative detections; outflows are also detected from the outbursting protostar HOPS 223 (V2775 Ori) and the Class I protostar HOPS 68. The outflows have a range of morphologies, some are spatially compact, i > 20 deg). This confirms the interpretation of the very red 24 micron to 70 micron colors of the PBRS as a signpost of high envelope densities, with only one (possibly two) cases of the red colors resulting from edge-on inclinations. We detect high-J (J_up > 13) CO lines and/or H_2O lines from 5 of 8 PBRS and only for those with detected CO outflows. The far-infrared CO rotation temperatures of the detected PBRS are marginally colder (~230 K) than those observed for most protostars (~300 K), and only one of these 5 PBRS has detected [OI] 63 micron emission. Aims: Previous observations of the young massive star formation region IRAS 19410+2336 have revealed strong outflow activity with several interacting outflows. We aim to get a better understanding of the outflow activity in this region by observing the SiO and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ emission with high angular resolution. SiO is known to trace shocked gas, which is often associated with young energetic outflows. With the H$^{13}$CO$^+$ data, we intend to better understand the distribution of the quiescent gaseous component of the region. Methods: The SiO observations in the J=2-1 v=0 transition and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ J=1-0 observations were performed by the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, combined with IRAM 30 m single-dish observations, in order to get the missing short-spacing information. We complement this new high-resolution observation with earlier CO and H$_2$ data. Results: The SiO observations do not trace the previously in CO and H$_2$ identified outflows well. Although we identify regions of highly increased SiO abundance indicative of shock interaction, there are hardly any bipolar structures in the data. The southern part of the region, which exhibits strong H$_2$ emission, shows almost no SiO. The CO and SiO data show only weak similarities, and the main SiO emission lies between the two dominating dust clumps of the region. Conclusions: Most SiO emission is likely to be a result of high-velocity shocks due to protostellar jets. However, this does not explain all the emission features and additional effects; for example, colliding gas flows at the interface of the two main regions may play an important role in the origin of the emission. The present SiO data show that several different effects can influence SiO emission, which makes the interpretation of SiO data more difficult than often assumed.

We present results of 1.3mm interferometric and single-dish observations of the center of the L1641-N cluster in Orion. Single-dish wide-field continuum and CO(2-1) observations reveal the presence of several molecular outflows driven by deeply embedded protostellar sources. At higher angular resolution, the dominant millimeter source in the cluster center is resolved into a pair of protostars (L1641-N-MM1 and MM3), each driving a collimated outflow, and a more extended, clumpy core. Low-velocity CO line-wing emission is widely spread over much of the cluster area. We detect and map the distribution of several other molecular transitions (13CO, C18O, 13CS, SO, CH3OH, CH3CN, and OCS). CH3CN and OCS may indicate the presence of a hot corino around L1641-N-MM1. We tentatively identify a velocity gradient over L1641-N-MM1 in CH3CN and OCS, oriented roughly perpendicular to the outflow direction, perhaps indicative of a circumstellar disk. An analysis of the energy and momentum load of the CO outflows, along with the notion that apparently a large volume fraction is affected by the multiple outflow activity, suggests that outflows from a population of low-mass stars might have a significant impact on clustered (and potentially high-mass) star formation., 16 pages plus 10 figures accepted by AJ, full resolution version available at http://www.eso.org/~tstanke/preprints.html

We report the dramatic mid-infrared brightening between 2004 and 2006 of HOPS 383, a deeply embedded protostar adjacent to NGC 1977 in Orion. By 2008, the source became a factor of 35 brighter at 24 microns with a brightness increase also apparent at 4.5 microns. The outburst is also detected in the submillimeter by comparing APEX/SABOCA to SCUBA data, and a scattered-light nebula appeared in NEWFIRM K_s imaging. The post-outburst spectral energy distribution indicates a Class 0 source with a dense envelope and a luminosity between 6 and 14 L_sun. Post-outburst time-series mid- and far-infrared photometry shows no long-term fading and variability at the 18% level between 2009 and 2012. HOPS 383 is the first outbursting Class 0 object discovered, pointing to the importance of episodic accretion at early stages in the star formation process. We have used the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) 12 m telescope at 218 GHz to observe molecular clouds simultaneously in the JKaKc = 303→202, 322→221, and 321→220 transitions of para-H2CO to determine kinetic temperatures of the dense gas in the central molecular zone of the Galaxy. Gas kinetic temperatures for individual molecular clouds range from 55 to 125 K or even higher. The molecular clouds at high temperatures may be heated by turbulent dissipation and/or cosmic-rays.

We show that supersonic turbulence accelerates the transition ofan atomic cloud into a molecular cloud, quantified here through a demo model and 3D numerical simulations which explicitly includeatomic-molecular chemistry. Specific sites where amplifiedformation may be detectable are suggested.

We present near-infrared observations of the protostellar outflow HH 7-11 in the molecular hydrogen 1-0 S(1) and [Fe II] 1.644-μm emission lines. Images at four epochs spread over 11 yr constrain the proper motions of the H 2 emission knots to be less than 0.045 arcsec yr - 1 , corresponding to tangential speeds of under 47 km s - 1 at 220-pc distance, consistent with the proper motions derived in the optical range for the atomic component. Reanalysis of previous observations shows that variability and distortion of the SVS 13 reference star led to erroneous high H 2 proper motions. The SVS 13 K-band flux is a factor of 3 higher in 1994-2000 than in 1989. Numerous H 2 subknots are identified on images taken in 1998 and 2000. No significant relative variability is found in these subknots, consistent with slow outflow evolution. Compact [Fe II] emission peaks are found at the locations of atomic emission-line features observed in the optical range. We also identify in this line an elongated feature corresponding to the proposed jet Mach disc.

The Herschel Orion Protostar Survey obtained well-sampled 1.2 - 870 micron spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of over 300 protostars in the Orion molecular clouds, home to most of the young stellar objects (YSOs) in the nearest 500 pc. We plot the bolometric luminosities and temperatures for 330 Orion YSOs, 315 of which have bolometric temperatures characteristic of protostars. The histogram of bolometric temperature is roughly flat; 29% of the protostars are in Class 0. The median luminosity decreases by a factor of four with increasing bolometric temperature; consequently, the Class 0 protostars are systematically brighter than the Class I protostars, with a median luminosity of 2.3 L_sun as opposed to 0.87 L_sun. At a given bolometric temperature, the scatter in luminosities is three orders of magnitude. Using fits to the SEDs, we analyze how the luminosities corrected for inclination and foreground reddening relate to the mass in the inner 2500 AU of the best-fit model envelopes. The histogram of envelope mass is roughly flat, while the median corrected luminosity peaks at 15 L_sun for young envelopes and falls to 1.7 L_sun for late-stage protostars with remnant envelopes. The spread in luminosity at each envelope mass is three orders of magnitude. Envelope masses that decline exponentially with time explain the flat mass histogram and the decrease in luminosity, while the formation of a range of stellar masses explains the dispersion in luminosity., Accepted by ApJ, 16 pages, 14 figures

We use mid-infrared to submillimeter data from the Spitzer, Herschel, and APEX telescopes to study the bright sub-mm source OMC-2 FIR 4. We find a point source at 8, 24, and 70 $\mu$m, and a compact, but extended source at 160, 350, and 870 $\mu$m. The peak of the emission from 8 to 70 $\mu$m, attributed to the protostar associated with FIR 4, is displaced relative to the peak of the extended emission; the latter represents the large molecular core the protostar is embedded within. We determine that the protostar has a bolometric luminosity of 37 Lsun, although including more extended emission surrounding the point source raises this value to 86 Lsun. Radiative transfer models of the protostellar system fit the observed SED well and yield a total luminosity of most likely less than 100 Lsun. Our models suggest that the bolometric luminosity of the protostar could be just 12-14 Lsun, while the luminosity of the colder (~ 20 K) extended core could be around 100 Lsun, with a mass of about 27 Msun. Our derived luminosities for the protostar OMC-2 FIR 4 are in direct contradiction with previous claims of a total luminosity of 1000 Lsun (Crimier et al 2009). Furthermore, we find evidence from far-infrared molecular spectra (Kama et al. 2013, Manoj et al. 2013) and 3.6 cm emission (Reipurth et al 1999) that FIR 4 drives an outflow. We present a new 3.3 mm continuum map of the OMC-2/3 region. When paired with previously published maps of 1.2mm continuum and NH3-derived temperature, we derive the emissivity spectral index of dust emission in this region, tracking its changes across the filament and cores. We find that the median value of the emissivity spectral index is 0.9, much shallower than previous estimates in other nearby molecular clouds. We find no significant difference between the emissivity spectral index of dust in the OMC-2/3 filament and the starless or protostellar cores. Furthermore, the temperature and emissivity spectral index, beta, are anti-correlated at the 4 sigma level. The low values of the emissivity spectral index found in OMC-2/3 can be explained by the presence of millimeter-sized dust grains in the dense regions of the filaments to which these maps are most sensitive. Alternatively, a shallow dust emissivity spectral index may indicate non-powerlaw spectral energy distributions, significant free-free emission, or anomalous microwave emission. Edge-on protostars are valuable for understanding the disk and envelope properties of embedded young stellar objects, since the disk, envelope, and envelope cavities are all distinctly visible in resolved images and well constrained in modeling. Comparing 2MASS, WISE, Spitzer, Herschel, APEX, and IRAM photometry and limits from 1.25 to 1200 microns, Spitzer spectroscopy from 5 to 40 microns, and high-resolution Hubble imaging at 1.60 and 2.05 microns to radiative transfer modeling, we determine envelope and disk properties for the Class I protostar HOPS 136, an edge-on source in Orion's Lynds 1641 region. The source has a bolometric luminosity of 0.8 L_sun, a bolometric temperature of 170 K, and a ratio of submillimeter to bolometric luminosity of 0.8%. Via modeling, we find a total luminosity of 4.7 L_sun (larger than the observed luminosity due to extinction by the disk), an envelope mass of 0.06 M_sun, and a disk radius and mass of 450 AU and 0.002 M_sun. The stellar mass is highly uncertain but is estimated to fall between 0.4 and 0.5 M_sun. To reproduce the flux and wavelength of the near-infrared scattered-light peak in the spectral energy distribution, we require 5.4 x 10^-5 M_sun of gas and dust in each cavity. The disk has a large radius and a mass typical of more evolved T Tauri stars in spite of the significant remaining envelope. We perform a census of the reddest, and potentially youngest, protostars in the Orion molecular clouds using data obtained with the PACS instrument onboard the Herschel Space Observatory and the LABOCA and SABOCA instruments on APEX as part of the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey (HOPS). A total of 55 new protostar candidates are detected at 70 um and 160 um that are either too faint (m24 > 7 mag) to be reliably classified as protostars or undetected in the Spitzer/MIPS 24 um band. We find that the 11 reddest protostar candidates with log (lambda F_lambda 70) / (lambda F_lambda 24) > 1.65 are free of contamination and can thus be reliably explained as protostars. The remaining 44 sources have less extreme 70/24 colors, fainter 70 um fluxes, and higher levels of contamination. Taking the previously known sample of Spitzer protostars and the new sample together, we find 18 sources that have log (lambda F_lambda 70) / (lambda F_lambda 24) > 1.65; we name these sources "PACS Bright Red sources", or PBRs. Our analysis reveals that the PBRs sample is composed of Class 0 like sources characterized by very red SEDs (T_bol < 45 K) and large values of sub-millimeter fluxes (L_smm/L_bol > 0.6%). Modified black-body fits to the SEDs provide lower limits to the envelope masses of 0.2 M_sun to 2 M_sun and luminosities of 0.7 L_sun to 10 L_sun. Based on these properties, and a comparison of the SEDs with radiative transfer models of protostars, we conclude that the PBRs are most likely extreme Class 0 objects distinguished by higher than typical envelope densities and hence, high mass infall rates., Accepted to Apj; 36 pages, 25 figures, 8 tables

The Galactic center is the closest region in which we can study star formation under extreme physical conditions like those in high-redshift galaxies. We measure the temperature of the dense gas in the central molecular zone (CMZ) and examine what drives it. We mapped the inner 300 pc of the CMZ in the temperature-sensitive J = 3-2 para-formaldehyde (p-H$_2$CO) transitions. We used the $3_{2,1} - 2_{2,0} / 3_{0,3} - 2_{0,2}$ line ratio to determine the gas temperature in $n \sim 10^4 - 10^5 $cm$^{-3}$ gas. We have produced temperature maps and cubes with 30" and 1 km/s resolution and published all data in FITS form. Dense gas temperatures in the Galactic center range from ~60 K to > 100 K in selected regions. The highest gas temperatures T_G > 100 K are observed around the Sgr B2 cores, in the extended Sgr B2 cloud, the 20 km/s and 50 km/s clouds, and in "The Brick" (G0.253+0.016). We infer an upper limit on the cosmic ray ionization rate $��_{CR} < 10^{-14}$ 1/s. The dense molecular gas temperature of the region around our Galactic center is similar to values found in the central regions of other galaxies, in particular starburst systems. The gas temperature is uniformly higher than the dust temperature, confirming that dust is a coolant in the dense gas. Turbulent heating can readily explain the observed temperatures given the observed line widths. Cosmic rays cannot explain the observed variation in gas temperatures, so CMZ dense gas temperatures are not dominated by cosmic ray heating. The gas temperatures previously observed to be high in the inner ~75 pc are confirmed to be high in the entire CMZ., Accepted to A&A. We examine eight young stellar objects in the OMC-2 star forming region based on observations from the SOFIA/FORCAST early science phase, the Spitzer Space Telescope, the Herschel Space Observatory, 2MASS, APEX, and other results in the literature. We show the spectral energy distributions of these objects from near-infrared to millimeter wavelengths, and compare the SEDs with those of sheet collapse models of protostars and circumstellar disks. Four of the objects can be modelled as protostars with infalling envelopes, two as young stars surrounded by disks, and the remaining two objects have double-peaked SEDs. We model the double-peaked sources as binaries containing a young star with a disk and a protostar. The six most luminous sources are found in a dense group within a 0.15 x 0.25 pc region; these sources have luminosities ranging from 300 L_sun to 20 L_sun. The most embedded source (OMC-2 FIR 4) can be fit by a class 0 protostar model having a luminosity of ~50 L_sun and mass infall rate of ~10^-4 solar masses per year., Accepted by ApJ Letters

Using the 4.5 μm excess as a tracer of shocked H2, we identified ~ 160 candidate protostellar outflows in the Spitzer GLIMPSE survey. In order to verify their nature, a follow-up campaign for H2 1–0 (S1) 2.12 μm imaging was initiated. Here we present first results for southern objects obtained with ESO-SOFI. About half of the observed targets could be detected at 2.12 μm. The non-detections point to large dust column densities and/or different excitation conditions. The comparison with the IRAC images reveals the diversity of the emission.

We have performed a 1 square degree 1.2mm dust continuum survey in the rho Oph molecular cloud. We detect a number of previously unknown sources, ranging from extended cores over compact, starless cores to envelopes surrounding young stellar objects of Class 0, Class I, and Class II type. We analyse the mass distribution, spatial distribution and the potential equilibrium of the cores. For the inner regions, the survey results are consistent with the findings of previous narrower surveys. The core mass function resembles the stellar initial mass function, with the core mass function shifted by a factor of two to higher masses (for the chosen opacity and temperature). In addition, we find no statistical variation in the core mass function between the crowded inner regions and those in more isolated fields except for the absence of the most massive cores in the extended cloud. The inner region contains compacter cores. This is interpreted as due to a medium of higher mean pressure although strong pressure variations are evident in each region. The cores display a hierarchical spatial distribution with no preferred separation scale length. However, the frequency distribution of nearest neighbours displays two peaks, one of which at 5000AU can be the result of core fragmentation. The orientations of the major axes of cores are consistent with an isotropic distribution. In contrast, the relative orientations of core pairs are preferentially in the NW-SE direction on all separation scales. These results are consistent with core production and evolution in a turbulent environment. We present a wide-field survey of the young open cluster IC348 for molecular H2 outflows. Outflow activity is only found at its south-western limit, where a new subcluster of embedded sources is in an early phase of its formation. If the IC348 cluster had been built up by such subclusters forming at different times, this could explain the large age-spread that Herbig (1998) found for the IC348 member stars. In addition to several compact groups of H2 knots, our survey reveals a large north-south oriented outflow, and we identify the newly discovered far-infrared and mm-object IC348MMS as its source. New deep images in the 1-0 S(1) line of molecular hydrogen trace the HH211 jet and counterjet as highly-collimated chains of knots, resembling the interferometric CO and SiO jets. This jet system appears rotated counter-clockwise by about 3 degrees with respect to the prominent H2 bow shocks. We have identified twenty-seven candidate very low mass members of the relatively young Alpha Persei open cluster from a six square degree CCD imaging survey. Based on their I magnitudes and the nominal age and distance to the cluster, these objects should have masses less than 0.1 Msunif they are cluster members. We have subsequently obtained intermediate resolution spectra of seventeen of these objects using the Keck II telescope and LRIS spectrograph. We have also obtained near-IR photometry for many of the stars. Our primary goal was to determine the location of the "lithium depletion boundary" and hence to derive a precise age for the cluster. We detect lithium with equivalent widths greater than or equal to 0.4 \AA in five of the program objects. We have constructed a color-magnitude diagram for the faint end of the Alpha Persei main sequence. These data allow us to accurately determine the Alpha Persei single-star lithium depletion boundary at M(I$_C$) = 11.47, M(Bol) = 11.42, (R-I)$_{C0}$ = 2.12, spectral type M6.0. By reference to theoretical evolutionary models, this converts fairly directly into an age for the Alpha Persei cluster of 90 $\pm$ 10 Myr. At this age, the two faintest of our spectroscopically confirmed members should be sub-stellar (i.e., brown dwarfs) according to theoretical models., Comment: Accepted ApJ

Individual outbursting young stars are important laboratories for studying the physics of episodic accretion and the extent to which this phenomenon can explain the luminosity distribution of protostars. We present new and archival data for V2775 Ori (HOPS 223), a protostar in the L 1641 region of the Orion molecular clouds that was discovered by Caratti o Garatti et al. (2011) to have recently undergone an order-of-magnitude increase in luminosity. Our near-infrared spectra of the source have strong blueshifted He I 10830 absorption, strong H2O and CO absorption, and no H I emission, all typical of FU Orionis sources. With data from IRTF, 2MASS, HST, Spitzer, WISE, Herschel, and APEX that span from 1 to 70 microns pre-outburst and from 1 to 870 microns post-outburst, we estimate that the outburst began between 2005 April and 2007 March. We also model the pre- and post-outburst spectral energy distributions of the source, finding it to be in the late stages of accreting its envelope with a disk-to-star accretion rate that increased from about 2x10^-6 M_sun/yr to about 10^-5 M_sun/yr during the outburst. The post-outburst luminosity at the epoch of the FU Orionis-like near-IR spectra is 28 L_sun, making V2775 Ori the least luminous documented FU Orionis outburster with a protostellar envelope. The existence of low-luminosity outbursts supports the notion that a range of episiodic accretion phenomena can partially explain the observed spread in protostellar luminosities., Accepted to ApJ, 13 pages, 6 figures

Infrared dark clouds are massive, dense clouds seen in extinction against the IR Galactic background. Many of these objects appear to be on the verge of star and star cluster formation. Our aim is to understand the physical properties of IRDCs in very early evolutionary phases. We selected the filamentary IRDC G351.77 - 0.51, which is remarkably IR quiet at 8{\mu}m. As a first step, we observed mm dust continuum emission and rotational lines of moderate and dense gas tracers to characterise different condensations along the IRDC and study the velocity field of the filament. Our initial study confirms coherent velocity distribution along the infrared dark cloud ruling out any coincidental projection effects. Excellent correlation between MIR extinction, mm continuum emission and gas distribution is found. Large-scale turbulence and line profiles throughout the filament is indicative of a shock in this cloud. We report discovery of a new young stellar object driving a point-symmetric, near-infrared jet and molecular outflow. The YSO is associated with IRAS 06047 1117 and is embedded in a dense molecular cloud core located southeast of Orion A. The jet is seen in the H2 v =1 0 line at 2.12 m and extends over a total length of about0.4 pc. The driving source is optically invisible and has near-infrared colors and a spectral energy distribution consistent with a Class I source with an estimated luminosity of 6 L. Two Herbig-Haro objects are seen in H images located close to the positions of maximum H2 emission.
