Abstract

This paper contains data and results from Density Functional Theory (DFT) investigation of 423 distinct X2YZ ternary full Heusler alloys, where X and Y represent elements from the D-block of the periodic table and Z signifies element from main group. The study encompasses both “regular” and “inverse” Heusler phases of these alloys for a total of 846 potential materials. For each specific alloy and each phase, a range of information is provided including total energy, formation energy, lattice constant, total and site-specific magnetic moments, spin polarization as well as total and projected density of electronic states. The aim of creating this dataset is to provide fundamental theoretical insights into ternary X2YZ Heusler alloys for further theoretical and experimental analysis.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE There is a dearth of long-term data regarding patient and limb survival in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). The purpose of our study was therefore to prospectively investigate the limb and person survival of DFU patients during a follow-up period of more than 10 years. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Two hundred forty-seven patients with DFUs and without previous major amputation consecutively presenting to a single diabetes center between June 1998 and December 1999 were included in this study and followed up until May 2011. Mean patient age was 68.8 ± 10.9 years, 58.7% were male, and 55.5% had peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Times to first major amputation and to death were analyzed with Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox multiple regression. RESULTS A first major amputation occurred in 38 patients (15.4%) during follow-up. All but one of these patients had evidence of PAD at inclusion in the study, and 51.4% had severe PAD [ankle-brachial pressure index ≤0.4]). Age (hazard ratio [HR] per year, 1.05 [95% CI, 1.01–1.10]), being on dialysis (3.51 [1.02–12.07]), and PAD (35.34 [4.81–259.79]) were significant predictors for first major amputation. Cumulative mortalities at years 1, 3, 5, and 10 were 15.4, 33.1, 45.8, and 70.4%, respectively. Significant predictors for death were age (HR per year, 1.08 [95% CI, 1.06–1.10]), male sex ([1.18–2.32]), chronic renal insufficiency (1.83 [1.25–2.66]), dialysis (6.43 [3.14–13.16]), and PAD (1.44 [1.05–1.98]). CONCLUSIONS Although long-term limb salvage in this modern series of diabetic foot patients is favorable, long-term survival remains poor, especially among patients with PAD or renal insufficiency.

3. Resolving 'orphaned' non-specific structures using machine learning and natural language processing methods

Abstract

Scholarly publications of biodiversity literature contain a vast amount of information in human readable format. The detailed morphological descriptions in these publications contain rich information that can be extracted to facilitate analysis and computational biology research. However, the idiosyncrasies of morphological descriptions still pose a number of challenges to machines. In this work, we demonstrate the use of two different approaches to resolve meronym (i.e. part-of) relations between anatomical parts and their anchor organs, including a syntactic rule-based approach and a SVM-based (support vector machine) method. Both methods made use of domain ontologies. We compared the two approaches with two other baseline methods and the evaluation results show the syntactic methods (92.1% F1 score) outperformed the SVM methods (80.7% F1 score) and the part-of ontologies were valuable knowledge sources for the task. It is notable that the mistakes made by the two approaches rarely overlapped. Additional tests will be conducted on the development version of the Explorer of Taxon Concepts toolkit before we make the functionality publicly available. Meanwhile, we will further investigate and leverage the complementary nature of the two approaches to further drive down the error rate, as in practical application, even a 1% error rate could lead to hundreds of errors.

A disposable blood oxygenator with built-in temperature controlling element is described. It is made with a semirigid housing of a clear polycarbonate plastic (Lexan). Within the housing is a bubble oxygenating system incorporating within its reservoir a canister providing 270 square inches of temperature exchanging surface.

Abstract

A new blood oxygenator which comes presterilized and assembled has been used in open-heart surgery. Cooling and rewarming of the patient is efficiently maintained. Blood-flow rates exceeding 5 liters/min are easily managed by the oxygenator with an oxygenating gas to blood ratio of 2:1 to 4:1. The oxygenator functions with varying priming volumes as determined by the patient's size. Total priming of the apparatus is achieved with water electrolyte solutions. Successful clinical perfusions have lasted over 3 1/2 hours with every indication that appreciably longer perfusions would be possible. Perfusions with this apparatus are capable of maintaining normal metabolic states for prolonged periods. The total inhospital blood utilization including operating room and postoperative needs by these patients has averaged 4 liters.
