The Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL) will increase TRIUMF’s radioactive ion beam capabilities. As part of the ARIEL target material research and development campaign, a new method to produce targets of mixed uranium carbide with excess graphite has been proposed and tested. The resulting material is comparable in composition with the conventional target material and is produced ten times faster. The reduction in production time will liberate the resources and equipment for research and development leading to new target materials with improved radioisotope release properties for ARIEL.

This chapter describes the development of the versatile arc discharge and laser ion source (VADLIS) which is the combination of the ISOLDE RILIS with ISOLDE’s variant of the forced electron beam induced arc discharge (FEBIAD) ion source.

This chapter discusses the results of the isotope shift measurements of neutron rich mercury across the N \(=\) 126 shell closure. The characteristic kink in the mean square charge radii centred at N \(=\) 126 is characterised, and compared to the one present in the chain of lead isotopes.

This chapter presents the results of the in-source spectroscopy of exotic mercury isotopes. The remeasured isotopes are compared with literature results and the possible sources of experimental uncertainty are explored.

Ionization scheme development enables new or more efficient ion beam production by the ISOLDE RILIS. The selective nature of the ionization process requires a scheme to be developed for each element of interest. This chapter presents the methodology of ionization scheme development and new ionization schemes for tellurium, germanium, chromium, mercury and radium.

This chapter introduces the methodology for studying exotic nuclei via the measurement of atomic transitions which can be driven by laser light. This includes a description of both isotope shifts and the hyperfine structure resulting from magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments.

Several experiments on the study of the electron neutrino mass are based on high-statistics measurements of the energy spectrum following electron capture of the radionuclide 163Ho. They rely on the availability of large, radiochemically pure samples of 163Ho. Here, we describe the production, separation, characterization, and sample production within the Electron Capture in Holmium-163 (ECHo) project. 163Ho has been produced by thermal neutron activation of enriched, prepurified 162Er targets in the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France, in irradiations lasting up to 54 days. Irradiated targets were chemically processed by means of extraction chromatography, which allowed separating the formed Ho from the 162Er target-material and from the main byproducts 170Tm and 171Tm, which are co-produced in GBq amounts. Decontamination factors of >500 for Er and of >105 for Tm and yields of 3.6·1016 and 1.2·1018 atoms of 163Ho were obtained, corresponding to a recovery yield of 95 % of Ho in the chemical separation. The Ho-fraction was characterized by means of γ-ray spectrometry, Inductively-Coupled-Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry (RIMS) and Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA). In this process, the thermal neutron capture cross section of 163Ho was measured to σHo-163 to Ho-164m= (23±3) b and σHo-163 to Ho-164g= (156±9) b for the formation of the two isomers of 164Ho. Specific samples were produced for further purification by mass separation to isolate 163Ho from the Ho-isotope mixture, as needed for obtaining the energy spectrum within ECHo. The partial efficiency for this second separation step is (32±5) %.

NMR spectra of Mg2+ ions in ionic liquids were recorded using a highly sensitive variant of NMR spectroscopy known as β-NMR. The β-NMR spectra of MgCl2 in EMIM-Ac and EMIM-DCA compare favourably with conventional NMR, and exhibit linewidths of ∼3 ppm, allowing for discrimination of species with oxygen and nitrogen coordination.

At ISOLDE the majority of radioactive ion beams are produced using the resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS). This ion source is based on resonant excitation of atomic transitions by wavelength tunable laser radiation. Since its installation at the ISOLDE facility in 1994, the RILIS laser setup has been developed into a versatile remotely operated laser system comprising state-of–the-art solid state and dye lasers capable of generating multiple high quality laser beams at any wavelength in the range of 210–950 nm. A continuous programme of atomic ionization scheme development at CERN and at other laboratories has gradually increased the number of RILIS-ionized elements. At present, isotopes of 40 different elements have been selectively laser-ionized by the ISOLDE RILIS. Studies related to the optimization of the laser–atom interaction environment have yielded new laser ion source types: the laser ion source and trap and the versatile arc discharge and laser ion source. Depending on the specific experimental requirements for beam purity or versatility to switch between different ionization mechanisms, these may offer a favourable alternative to the standard hot metal cavity configuration. In addition to its main purpose of ion beam production, the RILIS is used for laser spectroscopy of radioisotopes. In an ongoing experimental campaign the isotope shifts and hyperfine structure of long isotopic chains have been measured by the extremely sensitive in-source laser spectroscopy method. The studies performed in the lead region were focused on nuclear deformation and shape coexistence effects around the closed proton shell Z = 82. The paper describes the functional principles of the RILIS, the current status of the laser system and demonstrated capabilities for the production of different ion beams including the high-resolution studies of short-lived isotopes and other applications of RILIS lasers for ISOLDE experiments.

International audience; The first experimental investigation of the electron affinity (EA) of a radioactive isotope has been conducted at the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility. The EA of the radioactive iodine isotope (128)I (t (1/2) = 25 min) was determined to be 3.059 052(38) eV. The experiment was conducted using the newly developed Gothenburg ANion Detector for Affinity measurements by Laser PHotodetachment (GANDALPH) apparatus, connected to a CERN-ISOLDE experimental beamline. (128)I was produced in fission induced by 1.4 GeV protons striking a thorium/tantalum foil target and then extracted as singly charged negative ions at a beam energy of 20 keV. Laser photodetachment of the fast ion beam was performed in a collinear geometry inside the GANDALPH chamber. Neutral atoms produced in the photodetachment process were detected by allowing them to impinge on a glass surface, creating secondary electrons which were then detected using a channel electron multiplier. The photon energy of the laser was tuned across the threshold of the photodetachment process and the detachment threshold data were fitted to a Wigner law function in order to extract the EA. This first successful demonstration of photodetachment at an isotope separator on line facility opens up the opportunity for future studies of the fundamental properties of negatively charged radioactive isotopes such as the EA of astatine and polonium.

The in-source laser photoionization spectroscopy was applied to study neutron-deficient Bi isotopes. Data analysis and accuracy-related aspects of this technique are discussed. The accuracy of the peak position evaluation is estimated. An “integration method” for nuclear spin determination in the case of partially resolved hyperfine spectra is discussed in detail.
