The fifth annual summer research summit organized by the Center of Excellence (COE) in Health Equity, Training and Research, Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), was held on May 17, 2022. The theme of this year’s summit was ‘Academic-Community Partnerships: Change Agents for Advancing Health Equity.’ Given the ongoing pandemic, the summit was conducted virtually through digital platforms. This program was intended for both BCM and external audiences interested in advancing health equity, diversity, and inclusion in healthcare among healthcare providers and trainees, biomedical scientists, social workers, nurses, and individuals involved in talent acquisition and development, such as hiring managers (HR professionals), supervisors, college and hospital affiliate leadership and administrators, as well as diversity and inclusion excellence practitioners. We had attendees from all regions of the United States as well as from Saudi Arabia. The content in this Book of Abstracts encapsulates a summary of the research efforts by the BCM COE scholars (which includes post-baccalaureate students, medical students, clinical fellows, and junior faculty from BCM) as well as the external summit participants. The range of topics in this year’s summit was quite diverse, encompassing disparities in relation to maternal and child health (MCH), immigrant health, cancers, vaccination uptakes, and COVID-19 infections. Various solutions were ardently presented to address these disparities, including community engagement and partnerships, improvement in health literacy, and the development of novel technologies and therapeutics. With this summit, BCM continues to build on its long history of educational outreach initiatives to promote diversity in medicine by focusing on programs aimed at increasing the number of diverse and highly qualified medical professionals ready to introduce effective and innovative approaches to reduce or eliminate health disparities. These programs will improve information resources, clinical education, curricula, research, and cultural competence as they relate to minority health issues and social determinants of health. Post-harvest losses in onions pose a serious challenge, urging exploration of innovative strategies. The scrutiny explores post-harvest technology's pivotal role in curbing losses, vital for food security and economic stability. Grading, sorting, and modern storage methods are outlined, including recent advances like gamma ray irradiation. Additionally, innovative approaches to managing onion diseases are discussed. Insightfulness into traditional and modern storage methods including recent advances are also brought out. As a corollary, this comprehensive review underscores the critical importance of post-harvest technology in reducing onion losses and enhancing the overall efficiency and sustainability of the onion supply chain. Dyspnea secondary to lung impairment can persist following the acute phase of COVID-19. Thoracic expansion measurements have been used as a diagnostic tool to evaluate chest wall mobility, respiratory function, and the effects of respiratory muscle strength training. Changes in chest wall mobility may occur because of altered chest biomechanics in individuals with respiratory diseases and an elevated body mass index (BMI). The purpose of this secondary analysis was to evaluate whether BMI influences thoracic expansion or forced expiratory volume over 1 second (FEV1) in individuals with persistent dyspnea following COVID-19. This study assessed the relationship between BMI and thoracic expansion, pulmonary symptoms, and exercise capacity following a home-based pulmonary rehabilitation intervention. A secondary data analysis was conducted with a sample of 19 adults with persistent dyspnea following COVID-19 infection who participated in a 12-week, home-based pulmonary rehabilitation study. Participants received expiratory muscle strength training devices and were instructed to perform pulmonary rehabilitation exercises three times per week over the study period. Pulmonary function, pulmonary symptoms, exercise capacity, and BMI measurements were collected. For analysis, study participants were divided into obese (BMI > 30 kg/m2) or nonobese (BMI < 30 kg/m2) categories. Correlations using the change scores from baseline to 12 weeks between thoracic expansion, FEV1, pulmonary symptoms, and exercise capacity were assessed. In addition, the minimal detectable change (MDC) in thoracic expansion was explored. Thoracic expansion was significantly improved after 12 weeks of training (p =.012) in the nonobese group. There was a significant correlation between the change in walking distance and pulmonary symptoms (r = −.738, p <.001) and in thoracic expansion (r =.544, p =.020), and walking distance, when controlling for BMI, but no change in FEV1. Average MDC was 1.28 for inspiration and 0.91 for expiration. Measurements of thoracic expansion were significantly lower in post-COVID individuals with an increased BMI. Individuals with persistent dyspnea and a higher BMI may require additional measures to increase chest mobility or to detect pulmonary changes following COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Estimates of 10-49% of patients may experience ongoing symptoms after COVID-19, including dyspnea. Respiratory muscle strength training has been used to reduce dyspnea in other respiratory diseases, thus, it may be a viable option for individuals with post-COVID-19 symptoms. The objective of this review was to evaluate the evidence for the effectiveness of respiratory muscle strength training for individuals with post-COVID-19 dyspnea. A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. CINAHL, Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases were searched from 2020-2023. Eleven articles met the inclusion criteria. Pulmonary measures were improved in all but one study, and dyspnea, physical capacity and quality of life measures achieved statistical significance. Outcomes improved following respiratory muscle strength training as a standalone intervention, or with aerobic and peripheral muscle strength training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The autotaxin-lysophosphatidic acid (ATX-LPA) signaling pathway plays a role in a variety of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or neurodegeneration. A link to the pathogenesis of glaucoma is suggested by an overactive ATX-LPA axis in aqueous humor samples of glaucoma patients. Analysis of such samples suggests that the ATX-LPA axis contributes to the fibrogenic activity and resistance to aqueous humor outflow through the trabecular meshwork. In order to inhibit or modulate this pathway, we developed a new series of ATX-inhibitors containing novel bicyclic and spirocyclic structural motifs. A potent lead compound (IC50 against ATX: 6 nM) with good in vivo PK, favorable in vitro property, and safety profile was generated. This compound leads to lowered LPA levels in vivo after oral administration. Hence, it was suitable for chronic oral treatment in two rodent models of glaucoma, the experimental autoimmune glaucoma (EAG) and the ischemia/reperfusion models. In the EAG model, rats were immunized with an optic nerve antigen homogenate, while controls received sodium chloride. Retinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) was induced by elevating the intraocular pressure (IOP) in one eye to 140 mmHg for 60 min, followed by reperfusion, while the other untreated eye served as control. Retinae and optic nerves were evaluated 28 days after EAG or 7 and 14 days after I/R induction. Oral treatment with the optimized ATX-inhibitor lead to reduced retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss in both glaucoma models. In the optic nerve, the protective effect of ATX inhibition was less effective compared to the retina and only a trend to a weakened neurofilament distortion was detectable. Taken together, these results provide evidence that the dysregulation of the ATX-LPA axis in the aqueous humor of glaucoma patients, in addition to the postulated outflow impairment, might also contribute to RGC loss. The observation that ATX-inhibitor treatment in both glaucoma models did not result in significant IOP increases or decreases after oral treatment indicates that protection from RGC loss due to inhibition of the ATX-LPA axis is independent of an IOP lowering effect.
