- Abstract
Intended for teachers of grades 6-10, this book was designed to motivate young people to read, build their comprehension skills, and extend their learning across the curriculum. The book's participatory mealtime programs incorporate learning with activities such as writing and art projects, role-playing, storytelling, games, interviewing, and hosting guest speakers, using food as an incentive to participate. The book provides detailed plans for learning events based on selected young adult novels. Its plans are flexible enough to be adapted to other titles and are made simple with detailed guidelines. The book provides, for each title, a summary of the plot, a booktalk, background information on the author, discussion questions, activity ideas, novel connections, and suggestions for food and decorations. It also contains reproducible templates of publicity posters, student invitations, game pieces, and other materials. The book is a great way to involve students, teachers, librarians, parents, and community members in the reading program. (CR)
