Creative methods in counselling are generally regarded as adjunctive techniques and procedures. In this paper I advocate for a deeper integration of creative methods within counselling and propose that one way forward would be to develop more inclusive frameworks for this practice. To this end, I consider some of the ways clinicians and theorists, particularly from the creative/expressive arts therapies, have sought to develop integrative approaches for imagination-based therapeutic practices. This overview also pays attention to attempts within talking therapies to develop more descriptive/functional models for the use of mental imagery that allow an integration across theoretical orientations. Some of the most relevant models and theoretical positions are then discussed in the light of their potential to inform frameworks for the use of creative methods in counselling.

Drylands are unique among terrestrial ecosystems in that they have a significant proportion of primary production facilitated by non‐vascular plants such as colonial cyanobacteria, moss, and lichens, i.e., biocrusts, which occur on and in the surface soil. Biocrusts inhabit all continents, including Antarctica, an increasingly dynamic continent on the precipice of change. Here, we describe in‐situ field surveying and sampling, remote sensing, and modeling approaches to assess the habitat suitability of biocrusts in the Lake Fryxell basin of Taylor Valley, Antarctica, which is the main site of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long‐Term Ecological Research Program. Soils suitable for the development of biocrusts are typically wetter, less alkaline, and less saline compared to unvegetated soils. Using random forest models, we show that gravimetric water content, electrical conductivity, and snow frequency are the top predictors of biocrust presence and biomass. Areas most suitable for the growth of dense biocrusts are soils associated with seasonal snow patches. Using geospatial data to extrapolate our habitat suitability model to the whole basin predicts that biocrusts are present in 2.7 × 105 m2 and contain 11–72 Mg of aboveground carbon, based on the 90% probability of occurrence. Our study illustrates the synergistic effect of combining field and remote sensing data for understanding the distribution and biomass of biocrusts, a foundational community in the carbon balance of this region. Extreme weather events and changing climate conditions in this region, especially those influencing snow accumulation and persistence, could have significant effects on the future distribution and abundance of biocrusts and therefore soil organic carbon storage in the McMurdo Dry Valleys. Topography and the computational mesh grid are fundamental inputs to all two‐dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic models, however their resolutions are often arbitrarily selected based on data availability. With the increasing use of drone technology, the end user can collect topographic data down to centimeter‐scale resolution. With this advancement comes the responsibility of choosing a resolution. In this study, we investigated how the choice of mesh grid and digital elevation model (DEM) resolutions affect 2D hydrodynamic modeling results, specifically water depths, velocities, and inundation extent. We made pairwise comparisons between simulations from a 2D HEC‐RAS model with varying mesh grid resolutions (1 and 2 m) and drone‐based lidar DEM resolutions (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 m) over a 1.5 km reach of Stroubles Creek in Blacksburg, Virginia. The model was rerun for up to ±4% change in floodplain roughness to determine how the DEM and mesh grid changes relate to an equivalent change in roughness. We found that the modeled differences from resolution change were equivalent to altering floodplain roughness by up to 12% for depths and 44% for velocities. The largest differences in velocity were concentrated at the channel‐floodplain interface, whereas differences in depth occurred laterally throughout the floodplain and were not correlated with lidar ground point density. We also found that the inundation boundary is dependent on the DEM resolution. Our results suggest that modelers should carefully consider what resolution best represents the terrain while also resolving important riparian topographic features. The study aims to investigate the association of learning participation with the quality of life (QoL) in older Chinese adults, verifying how the differing types of learning activity participation may influence their QoL. We conducted two studies to gain a better understanding of learning participation and QoL among adults over 55 years of age. In the first study, we conducted five focus groups among 43 older adults about their understanding of learning benefits and their general well-being. In a second study, we assessed the QoL using the EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index, while learning participation was measured through a questionnaire addressing the frequency of involvement in educational activities among 579 Chinese older adults. The results indicate that being engaged in learning activities in old age has the potential to increase the QoL of older adults. Moreover, in contrast to nonformal learning, the results of the hierarchical linear regression model demonstrate that both informal and formal learning have a significant positive influence on QoL. The paper concludes by discussing the implications for research and practice pertaining to the encouragement of learning participation in later life.
