Abstract

This guide provides a framework for Oxfam staff to design programmes and campaigns that contribute to resilient development. Oxfam defines resilience as 'the ability of women and men to realize their rights and improve their well-being despite shocks, stresses and uncertainty'. Our governance-based approach to enhancing resilient development addresses the impacts of shocks, stresses and uncertainty on people living in poverty as well as the causes of vulnerability and risks.

Abstract

Methods for reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) content in air depend on the 10 application considered. For low concentration and low flux, non-thermal plasma methods are often considered as efficient. However, the complex chemistry involved is still not well understood as there is a lack of datasets of byproducts formation. So as to overcome this issue, rapid analytical methods are needed. We present the coupling of a rapid chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS) for the real-time analysis of the VOCs formed during a degradation experiment. The high resolution instrument used 15 allows for chemical ionization and direct quantification of non-targeted compounds. We present degradation experiments of acetone in a photo-triggered nitrogen plasma discharge. Two regimes were highlighted: efficient conversion at low concentrations (<100ppm) and moderate efficiency conversion at higher concentrations (>100ppm). Those two regimes were clearly delimited as the sum of two exponential curves occuring at respectively low and high concentrations. Many by-products were detected, in 20 particular HCN presented a significantly high yield. Nitrile compounds (acetonitrile, propionitrile,...) are formed as well. To a lower extent, ketene, acetaldehyde and formaldehyde are observed. The association of the high resolution mass spectrometer to the plasma reactor will allow further insights into the plasma chemistry and comparison to modelisation.

Abstract

Spectroscopic studies of the mechanistic steps that occur on supported precious metal catalysts used in industrial and automotive applications are hampered by a dearth of suitable experimental methods. We used femtosecond laser excitation followed by nanosecond time-resolved in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to initiate a catalytic reaction on alumina-supported silver catalysts, which are of interest in minimizing nitrogen oxide emissions from fuel-efficient lean-burn engines. We found that the key intermediate step in the reaction between carbon monoxide and nitric oxide is the flip of a cyanide group from a sliver nanoparticle to the alumina support (with a lifetime of 2 microseconds), which indicates the central role played by the interface between the metal particle and the oxide support.

Abstract

A numerical modeling of thermoelastohydrodynamic mechanical face seal behavior is presented. The model is an axisymmetric one and it is confined to high pressure compressible flow. It takes into account the behavior of a real gas and includes thermal and inertia effects, as well as a choked flow condition. In addition, heat transfer between the fluid film and the seal faces is computed, as are the elastic and thermal distortions of the rings. In the first part of this paper, the influence of the coning angle on mechanical face seal characteristics is studied. In the second part, the influence of the solid distortions is analyzed. It is shown that face distortions strongly modify both the gap geometry and the mechanical face seal's performance. The mechanical distortions lead to a converging gap, while the gas expansion, by cooling the fluid, creates a diverging gap. 31. Numerical modelling of high pressure gas face seals

Abstract

An axisymetric numerical model of face seals operating with compressible fluids at high pressure is presented. Inertia terms are included using an averaged method and thermal effects are considered. The real behavior of gases at high pressure is taken into account. An original exit boundary condition is used to deal with choked flow. The model is validated by comparison with experimental data and analytical solutions. Finally, the influence of the operating conditions on the performance of a high-pressure gas face seal is analyzed. It is shown that when the flow is choked, the mass flow rate is reduced and the behavior of the seal becomes unstable. [DOI: 10.1115/1.2164471]

Abstract

International audience; The stabilization of copper clusters in nanosized metal organic framework crystals, Cu-Y(BTC), was achieved by a solvent-exchange approach, followed by hydrogen reduction. The formation of copper clusters in the Y(BTC) nanocrystals generated during the hydrogen reduction process was followed by UV-vis spectroscopy. The Cu-Y(BTC) nanocrystals were further assembled in thin films with a thickness of 250 nm. The distribution and size of the copper clusters in the films were studied by CO chemisorption, followed by FT-IR spectroscopy combined with transmission electron microscopy. It was shown that the copper clusters with a mean diameter of 6 nm were homogeneously distributed and stabilized in the Cu-Y(BTC) films. Further, the Cu-Y(BTC) films were utilized for detection of single harmful gases, such as CO, chloroform, and 2-ethylthiophene, or mixtures of two compounds. The high sensitivity, selectivity, and reversibility of the Cu-Y(BTC) films toward single CO, chloroform, and 2-ethylthiophene were demonstrated. Noteworthy, the Cu-Y(BTC) films exhibited a fast response toward CO, even in the presence of chloroform and 2-ethylthiophene, which was due to the high activity and accessibility of copper clusters. The response of Cu-Y(BTC) toward 2-ethylthiophene was slower in comparison with chloroform, which was attributed to the bigger size and higher viscosity of 2-ethylthiophene.

49. Kinetic Modelling of Catalytic Reactions in Solid Oxide Cells: Study of Its Coupling with Electrochemistry for Steam and CO2 Co-Electrolysis and Steam Reforming

Abstract

High Temperature Electrolysis (HTE) can directly convert steam and CO2 into syngas, which may be converted into methane, methanol, DME, etc. The process efficiency should be increased by operating this type of co-electrolyzer under pressure. In this case, COx methanation and water gas shift reactions will occur in the cells with relatively high rates. HTE cells can also be used in fuel cell mode to generate electricity from methane and water by steam reforming, catalysed by nickel present in the cell. However, the contribution of these catalytic reactions are not well-known for these two modes. Consequently, an evaluation of their impact in a cell fed with carbonated gases will be proposed by establishing a kinetic model necessary for a complete electrochemical cell modelling. This work, firstly carried out at atmospheric pressure, allowed to validate only one kinetic model found in the literature for the two modes.
