Abstract

Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) bridge relativistic astrophysics and multi-messenger astronomy. Space-based gamma/X-ray wide field detectors have proven essential to detect and localize the highly variable GRB prompt emission, which is also a counterpart of gravitational wave events. We study the capabilities to detect long and short GRBs by the High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites (HERMES) Pathfinder (HP) and SpIRIT, namely a swarm of six 3U CubeSats to be launched in early 2025, and a 6U CubeSat launched on December 1st 2023. We also study the capabilities of two advanced configurations of swarms of >8 satellites with improved detector performances (HERMES Constellations). The HERMES detectors, sensitive down to ~2-3 keV, will be able to detect faint/soft GRBs which comprise X-ray flashes and high redshift bursts. By combining state-of-the-art long and short GRB population models with a description of the single module performance, we estimate that HP will detect ~195^{+22}_{-21} long GRBs (3.4^{+0.3}_{-0.8} at redshift z>6) and ~19^{+5}_{-3} short GRBs per year. The larger HERMES Constellations under study can detect between ~1300 and ~3000 long GRBs per year and between ~160 and ~400 short GRBs per year, depending on the chosen configuration, with a rate of long GRBs above z>6 between 30 and 75 per year. Finally, we explore the capabilities of HERMES to detect short GRBs as electromagnetic counterparts of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers detected as gravitational signals by current and future ground-based interferometers. Under the assumption that the GRB jets are structured, we estimate that HP can provide up to 1 (14) yr^{-1} joint detections during the fifth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run (Einstein Telescope single triangle 10 km arm configuration). 4. Dynamic surface topography and its application to the evaluation of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Abstract

Dynamic surface topography is a method to quantify the surface and locations of features acquired from moving and distorting shapes against time. This thesis describes the application of the technique to the potential evaluation of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients. Scoliosis or curvature of the spine is one of the major skeletal diseases in adolescents where in the majority of cases the cause is unknown or idiopathic. The progression of the disease occurs in three dimensions with the spine simultaneously curving towards the arms and rotating as it collapses with the first indications usually being changes in body symmetry and back surface shape. Following diagnosis, most children do not exhibit any significant worsening of their condition and are routinely monitored using radiography as frequently as every three months whilst vertebral growth potential remains. In a small number of patients, the lateral curvature can unpredictably worsen requiring, in some cases, surgical intervention to prevent further deterioration and to diminish the deformity. Earlier work by many researchers concentrated on attempting to reduce patient exposure to ionizing radiation by investigating if there was a reliable correlation between progression of the scoliosis and changes in surface topography. The techniques have not gained acceptance as the relational algorithms were found to be insufficiently robust in all cases and measurements acquired from available technologies were prone to artefacts introduced by stance, breathing, 'posture and sway. For many patients the motivation in seeking treatment is for the improvement of their appearance rather than to correct the underlying deformity, so cosmetic concerns and an understanding of the psychosocial and physical impacts of the disease and treatments remain important factors in the clinical decision-making process. In the current environment of evidence based medicine there is a growing need to quantify back surface shape, general body asymmetry and patient capability with the objective of producing an agreed scoring to be used in developing treatment plans and assessing outcomes but to date many clinics continue to rely on qualitative methods to describe cosmetic deformity and ability. The aim of the research was to develop an original, low cost and inherently safe apparatus using well understood video based motion capture technology that overcame the disadvantages of earlier work by simultaneously acquiring multiple samples of back surface shape and the locations of bony landmarks to provide averaged results for a quantitative and reliable analysis of cosmetic defect and physical impairment. 172,650 data samples were acquired from thirty skeletally mature subjects not exhibiting any musculoskeletal disease to define normality limits for Page 2 established morphological measurements and to compare the specificity of the approach with existing single sample techniques. Three novel calculations of back paraspinous volumetric asymmetry were tested of which two were found to be potentially useful clinical indicators of deformity and an index was proposed and tested using simulated data that could offer a single value to describe patient back shape asymmetry. Previous research has found that there is a loss of trunk ranges of motion among postoperative patients that has a direct impact on their quality of life, function and physical capability. Data were acquired from the mature subjects and similar results were observed when compared with published data for preoperative scoliosis patients. This thesis has shown that using averaged tri-dimensional morphological and back shape data combined with measurement of dynamic capability acquired using an inherently safe apparatus have the potential to be clinically useful. The opportunity to routinely and safely quantify the cosmetic defect and trunk ranges of motion of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients should stimulate more important research to help improve the quality of life of many affected children throughout the world.

7. Validity of sagittal thoracolumbar curvature measurement using a non-radiographic surface topography method

Abstract

Purpose To estimate the criterion validity of sagittal thoracolumbar spine measurement using a surface topography method in a clinical population against the gold standard and to estimate concurrent validity against two non-radiographic clinical tools. Methods In this cross-sectional validity study, thoracolumbar curvature was measured in adults with spinal conditions recruited from a specialist orthopaedic hospital. A surface topography method using a Kinect sensor was compared to three other measurement methods: spinal radiograph (gold standard), flexicurve and digital inclinometer. Correlation coefficients and agreement between the measurement tools were analysed. Results Twenty-nine participants (79% female) were included in criterion validity analyses and 38 (76% female) in concurrent validity analyses. The surface topography method was moderately correlated with the radiograph (r = .70, p r = .32, p = .89). The surface topography method was highly correlated with the flexicurve (rs = .91, p r = .82, p r = .74, p r = .74, p Conclusions The surface topography method showed moderate correlation and agreement in thoracic spine with the radiograph (criterion validity) and high correlation with the flexicurve and digital inclinometer (concurrent validity). Compared with other non-radiographic tools, this surface topography method displayed similar criterion validity for kyphosis curvature measurement.

Abstract

Plutonium (Pu) has been released to the environment worldwide, including approximately 1.85 × 1015 Bq (200 kg) of Pu from process waste solutions to unconfined soil structures at the Hanford Site in Washington State. The subsurface mobility of Pu is influenced by complex interactions with sediments, groundwater, and any co-contaminants within the waste stream. Previous investigations at Hanford have shown that Pu exists as discrete PuO2 particles forming before or after disposal, as secondary solid phases formed from waste interactions with sediments as adsorbed/incorporated species, and/or as dissolved species. In this research, new evidence is presented for the existence of PuO2, PuO2-Bi2O3 composites, and particles from burnt Pu metal in near-surface sediments where Pu-laden acidic process waste was disposed to sediments. Pu and americium (Am) L3 X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory suggest that, in larger, more crystalline PuO2 particles, Am formed from radioactive decay is retained in the PuIVO2 structure as AmIV. The Pu and Am that were disposed of in an acidic waste stream have since migrated deeper into the subsurface with detection to at least 37 meters below ground surface. In contrast, Pu deposited near the ground surface from neutral pH waste is found to be homogeneously distributed and relatively immobile. Groundwater extractions performed on contaminated sediments indicate that both Pu and Am are recalcitrant, with Am being fractionally less extractable than Pu on a molar basis. These results suggest that the more mobile fraction of Am has migrated from the near-surface and may be present in the deeper sediments as a different phase than Pu. From these results, it is suggested that Pu and Am deposited from acidic wastes were initially mobile and became significantly less mobile as wastes were neutralized within the soil profile. ©

Abstract

The approach of 1992 SK to within 0.056 AU of Earth on 1999 March 26 provided an excellent opportunity for radar observations. We observed it daily between March 22-26 at Goldstone at a transmitter frequency of 8560 MHz (3.50 cm). Weighted, optimally smoothed sums of cw (Doppler-only) echoes achieve a signal-to-noise ratio of about 300. Our highest resolution cw setup places up to approx. 30 0.5-Hz Doppler cells on the target at echo powers exceeding two standard deviations of the noise. Our highest resolution imaging setup places about 20 0.25-us (37.5 m) x 2.0 Hz pixels on 1992 SK at echo powers above the same threshold. We completed nearly 300 runs with each setup and obtained thorough rotational phase coverage (period = 7.320 h, P. Pravec, pers. comm.). The dispersion of the echoes in time delay indicates a lower bound on 1992 SK's maximum pole-on breadth of approx. 0.4 km that is consistent with the echo bandwidth and rotation period. Variations in the cw spectral bandwidths and shapes and in the delay-Doppler images as a function of rotation phase are evident on each day, are consistent in bandwidth with each other and with the rotation period, and indicate that the asteroid is asymmetric and modesty elongated.

Abstract

We report detailed results of Arecibo and Goldstone radar observations of 30 mainbelt asteroids (MBAs) during 1980-1997. In addition to estimates of radar cross section, radar albedo, and circular polarization ratio, we obtain new pole constraints for several asteroids, with those for 21 Lutetia being particularly restrictive.
