4. Military Adolescent Pandemic Study 2021: MAPS21

Abstract

Background: Military-connected students move between 6 to 9 times throughout their K-12 experience, creating unique challenges relating to integration, adaptation, identity development, and acceptance. However, when transitions occur during a global pandemic, isolation and disconnect with schools and the community create new challenges that impact health and well-being. The MAPS21 study uncovers the lived experiences of military-connected students who have experienced a transition during the pandemic and gives rise to the need for interdisciplinary care within the public-school setting to promote mental health and academic support during and post-pandemic transitions. Methods: Military adolescents and their parent(s) were interviewed and data were analyzed following an interpretive phenomenological process. A social-ecological model served as the guide to understand the participants' experiences and to further inform future supportive measures. Results: Seven subthemes surface under Individual, Relationships, Community, and Society and Policy, the levels within the social-ecological model. These subthemes included: anticipatory processes, control, growth and maturity, adapting views, isolation, school support, community support. Conclusion: Military-connected students may experience adverse outcomes relating to mental health and academic progression after experiencing a move during the pandemic. This study provides an avenue for teams of interdisciplinary professionals to collaborate within the public-school setting to provide proactive support through engagement and policy development.

Abstract

Background: Enteral nutrition (EN) is essential for management of hepatic lipidosis (HL) in cats. Objectives: To determine if time to start of EN and other clinicopathologic variables are associated with outcome in cats with HL. Animals: Forty‐eight cats with HL. Methods: Retrospective study. Information retrieved from medical records and client communications included clinicopathologic findings, time to start of EN, initial % of resting energy requirements provided, type of feeding tube, duration of hospitalization, and 3‐month survival. Variables were compared between surviving and nonsurviving cats and between cats fed ≤12 hours and >12 hours after hospital admission. Multivariable statistical testing was performed to further investigate variables of interest. Results: Seventeen of 25 (68%) cats fed ≤12 hours and 13 of 23 (57%) of cats fed >12 hours after hospital admission survived (P =.55). Only increasing age (odds ratio [OR], 1.313; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.032‐1.671; P =.03) and the presence of ascites (OR, 6.415; 95% CI, 1.354‐30.395; P =.02) were associated with death in multivariable analysis. Hospitalization duration (median, interquartile range [IQR]) was shorter in cats fed >12 hours (2.8 days; IQR, 2.1‐3.8 days) as compared with cats fed ≤12 hours (4.8 days; IQR, 3.6‐6.2 days) after hospital admission (P <.001). Conclusions and Clinical Importance: An initial stabilization period before EN introduction does not decrease survival or increase duration of hospitalization in cats with HL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The challenges that military adolescents face, including frequent relocations, pose potential risks to their identity development. The central aim of this study is to understand the impact that frequent relocations have on the identity development of highly mobile military adolescents. Military adolescents between the ages of 16 and 18 years were interviewed. An interpretive phenomenological design was employed to inform the interview and analytic approach. An inductive approach using humanistic interpretation through Hermeneutic circles was conducted. Four overarching themes were identified, including self-perception in the world, building relationships, overwhelming emotions, and fostering healthy transitions. Several subthemes developed and gave rise to common adolescent experiences. Military adolescents facing frequent relocations experience a series of identity crises that are often masked in daily life and kept secret from peers and family. Healthy transitions require the adolescent and family to openly and repeatedly explore the impact of relocations on the inner and social life of adolescents. This study calls for future research on the military adolescent-provider relationship to explore how to better help meet the needs of this population from a health care standpoint.
