We describe the cryogenic system being developed for Taurus: a super-pressure balloon-borne microwave polarimeter scheduled to fly in 2027. The Taurus cryogenic system consists of a 660L liquid helium cryostat which achieves a base temperature of <100mK with the help of a capillary-fed superfluid tank and a closed cycle dilution refrigerator. The main tank is supported with fiberglass flexures and is encased in two layers of vapor-cooled shields which allow Taurus to make full use of the extended flight time offered by the super-pressure balloon platform. The Taurus cryostat is projected to hold for over 50 days while weighing under 1000lbs. We present the design, testing, and thermal analysis of the Taurus cryogenic systems.

Due to high dynamic range and ease of use, continuous wave terahertz spectroscopy is an increasingly popular method for optical characterization of components used in cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. In this work, we describe an optical testbed that enables simultaneous measurements of transmission and reflection properties of various radiation absorbing dielectric materials, essential components in the reduction of undesired optical loading. To demonstrate the performance of the testbed, we have measured the reflection response of five absorbers commonly used for such applications: TKRAM, carbon- and iron-loaded Stycast, HR10, AN72, and an in-house 3D printed absorber across a frequency range of 100 to 500 GHz, for both S- and P-polarization, with incident angles varying from 15 to 45 degrees. Current and future experiments observing the cosmic microwave background require a detailed understanding of optical performance at cryogenic temperatures. Pre-deployment analysis of optics can be performed in custom-engineered cryogenic test beds, such as Mod-Cam, a first light camera for the CCAT project. This work presents studies of the mechanical and thermal performance of CryoSim, a model of a generic cylindrical 4-K cryostat cooled with a commercial pulse tube cryocooler that can be used to characterise optical components and full reimaging optical systems. CryoSim is extensively parametrised, allowing the joint analysis and optimisation of mechanical and thermal performance via finite element methods. Results from this model are validated against measured cooldown data of the Mod-Cam cryostat. Due to the extensive parametrisation of the model, significant modifications of the cryostat geometry may be implemented to be representative of any system the scientific community may desire, and validation of thermal and mechanical performance can be carried out rapidly., Comment: To be published in the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation (AS24) proceedings

Taurus is a balloon-borne cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment optimized to map the E-mode polarization and Galactic foregrounds at the largest angular scales ($\ell$ $\lt$ 30) and improve measurements of the optical depth to reionization ($\tau$). This will pave the way for improved measurements of the sum of neutrino masses in combination with high-resolution CMB data while also testing the $\Lambda CDM$ model on large angular scales and providing high-frequency maps of polarized dust foregrounds to the CMB community. These measurements take advantage of the low-loading environment found in the stratosphere and are enabled by NASA's super-pressure balloon platform, which provides access to 70% of the sky with a launch from Wanaka, New Zealand. Here we describe a general overview of Taurus, with an emphasis on the instrument design. Taurus will employ more than 10,000 100 mK transition edge sensor bolometers distributed across two low-frequency (150, 220 GHz) and one high-frequency (280, 350 GHz) dichroic receivers. The liquid helium cryostat housing the detectors and optics is supported by a lightweight gondola. The payload is designed to meet the challenges in mass, power, and thermal control posed by the super-pressure platform. The instrument and scan strategy are optimized for rigorous control of instrumental systematics, enabling high-fidelity linear polarization measurements on the largest angular scales.

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-$p_T$ associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects., Comment: 535 authors from 84 institutions, 12 pages, 8 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) bridge relativistic astrophysics and multi-messenger astronomy. Space-based gamma/X-ray wide field detectors have proven essential to detect and localize the highly variable GRB prompt emission, which is also a counterpart of gravitational wave events. We study the capabilities to detect long and short GRBs by the High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites (HERMES) Pathfinder (HP) and SpIRIT, namely a swarm of six 3U CubeSats to be launched in early 2025, and a 6U CubeSat launched on December 1st 2023. We also study the capabilities of two advanced configurations of swarms of >8 satellites with improved detector performances (HERMES Constellations). The HERMES detectors, sensitive down to ~2-3 keV, will be able to detect faint/soft GRBs which comprise X-ray flashes and high redshift bursts. By combining state-of-the-art long and short GRB population models with a description of the single module performance, we estimate that HP will detect ~195^{+22}_{-21} long GRBs (3.4^{+0.3}_{-0.8} at redshift z>6) and ~19^{+5}_{-3} short GRBs per year. The larger HERMES Constellations under study can detect between ~1300 and ~3000 long GRBs per year and between ~160 and ~400 short GRBs per year, depending on the chosen configuration, with a rate of long GRBs above z>6 between 30 and 75 per year. Finally, we explore the capabilities of HERMES to detect short GRBs as electromagnetic counterparts of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers detected as gravitational signals by current and future ground-based interferometers. Under the assumption that the GRB jets are structured, we estimate that HP can provide up to 1 (14) yr^{-1} joint detections during the fifth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run (Einstein Telescope single triangle 10 km arm configuration). Algorithmic materials discovery is a multi-disciplinary domain that integrates insights from specialists in alloy design, synthesis, characterization, experimental methodologies, computational modeling, and optimization. Central to this effort is a robust data management system paired with an interactive work platform. This platform should empower users to not only access others data but also integrate their analyses, paving the way for sophisticated data pipelines. To realize this vision, there is a need for an integrative collaboration platform, streamlined data sharing and analysis tools, and efficient communication channels. Such a collaborative mechanism should transcend geographical barriers, facilitating remote interaction and fostering a challenge-response dynamic. In this paper, we present our ongoing efforts in addressing the critical challenges related to an accelerated Materials Discovery Framework as a part of the High-Throughput Materials Discovery for Extreme Conditions Initiative. Our BIRDSHOT Center has successfully harnessed various tools and strategies, including the utilization of cloud-based storage, a standardized sample naming convention, a structured file system, the implementation of sample travelers, a robust sample tracking method, and the incorporation of knowledge graphs for efficient data management. Additionally, we present the development of a data collection platform, reinforcing seamless collaboration among our team members. We present new catalogs of likely globular clusters (GCs) in 17 nearby spiral galaxies studied as part of the PHANGS-HST Treasury Survey. The galaxies were imaged in five broad-band filters from the near-ultraviolet through the $I$ band. PHANGS-HST has produced catalogs of stellar clusters of all ages by selecting extended sources (from multiple concentration index measurements) followed by morphological classification (centrally concentrated and symmetric or asymmetric, multiple peaks, contaminant) by visually examining the V-band image and separately by a machine-learning algorithm which classified larger samples to reach fainter limits. From both cluster catalogs, we select an initial list of candidate GCs to have $B-V \geq 0.5$ and $V-I \geq 0.73$~mag, then remove likely contaminants (including reddened young clusters, background galaxies misclassified by the neural network, and chance superpositions/blends of stars) after a careful visual inspection. We find that $\approx86$ % of the color-selected candidates classified as spherically symmetric, and $\approx68$ of those classified as centrally concentrated but asymmetric are likely to be GCs. The luminosity functions of the GC candidates in 2 of our 17 galaxies, NGC 628 and NGC 3627, are atypical, and continue to rise at least 1~mag fainter than the expected turnover near $M_V \sim -7.4$. These faint candidate GCs have more extended spatial distributions than their bright counterparts, and may reside in the disk rather than the bulge/halo, similar to faint GCs previously discovered in M101. These faint clusters may be somewhat younger since the age-metallicity degeneracy makes it difficult to determine precise cluster ages from integrated colors once they reach $\approx1$~Gyr., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

The origin of radio emission in different populations of radio-quiet quasars is relatively unknown, but recent work has uncovered various drivers of increased radio-detection fraction. In this work, we pull together three known factors: optical colour ($g-i$), \CIV Distance (a proxy for $L/L_{Edd}$) and whether or not the quasar contains broad absorption lines (BALQSOs) which signify an outflow. We use SDSS DR14 spectra along with the LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 and find that each of these properties have an independent effect. BALQSOs are marginally more likely to be radio-detected than non-BALQSOs at similar colours and $L/L_{Edd}$, moderate reddening significantly increases the radio-detection fraction and the radio-detection increases with $L/L_{Edd}$ above a threshold for all populations. We test a widely used simple model for radio wind shock emission and calculate energetic efficiencies that would be required to reproduce the observed radio properties. We discuss interpretations of these results concerning radio-quiet quasars more generally. We suggest that radio emission in BALQSOs is connected to a different physical origin than the general quasar population since they show different radio properties independent of colour and \CIV distance., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

Chemotaxis combines three processes: directional sensing, polarity reorientation and migration. Directed migration plays an important role in immune response, metastasis, wound healing and development. To describe chemotaxis, we extend a previously published computational model of a 3D single cell, that presents three compartments (lamellipodium, nucleus and cytoplasm), whose migration on a flat surface quantitatively describes experiments. The simulation is built in the framework of CompuCell3D, an environment based on the Cellular Potts Model. In our extension, we treat chemotaxis as a compound process rather than a response to a potential force. We propose robust protocols to measure cell persistence, drift speed, terminal speed, chemotactic efficiency, taxis time, and we analyse cell migration dynamics in the cell reference frame from position and polarization recordings through time. Our metrics can be applied to experimental results and allow quantitative comparison between simulations and experiments. We found that our simulated cells exhibit a trade-off between polarization stability and chemotactic efficiency. Specifically, we found that cells with lower protrusion forces and smaller lamellipodia exhibit an increased ability to undergo chemotaxis. We also noticed no significant change in cell movement due to external chemical gradient when analysing cell displacement in the cell reference frame. Our results demonstrate the importance of measuring cell polarity throughout the entire cell trajectory, and treating velocity quantities carefully when cell movement is diffusive at short time intervals. Amphiphiles self-assemble into a variety of bicontinuous mesophases whose equilibrium structures take the form of high-symmetry cubic networks. Here, we show that the symmetry-breaking distortions in these systems give rise to anomalously large, non-affine collective deformations, which we argue to be a generic consequence of mass equilibration within deformed networks. We propose and study a minimal liquid network model of bicontinuous networks, in which acubic distortions are modeled by the relaxation of residually-stressed mechanical networks with constant-tension bonds. We show that non-affinity is strongly dependent on the valency of the network as well as the degree of strain-softening/stiffening force in the bonds. Taking diblock copolymer melts as a model system, liquid network theory captures quantitative features of two bicontinuous phases based on comparison with self-consistent field theory predictions and direct experimental characterization of acubic distortions, which are likely to be pronounced in soft amphiphilic systems more generally., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

Decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) are a new, rapidly-growing class of organizations governed by smart contracts. Here we describe how researchers can contribute to the emerging science of DAOs and other digitally-constituted organizations. From granular privacy primitives to mechanism designs to model laws, we identify high-impact problems in the DAO ecosystem where existing gaps might be tackled through a new data set or by applying tools and ideas from existing research fields such as political science, computer science, economics, law, and organizational science. Our recommendations encompass exciting research questions as well as promising business opportunities. We call on the wider research community to join the global effort to invent the next generation of organizations., Comment: includes major coordination problems

Theoretical physical-chemical models for the formation of planetary systems depend on data quality for the Sun's composition, that of stars in the solar neighbourhood, and of the estimated "pristine" compositions for stellar systems. The effective scatter and the observational uncertainties of elements within a few hundred parsecs from the Sun, even for the most abundant metals like carbon, oxygen and silicon, are still controversial. Here we analyse the stellar production and the chemical evolution of key elements that underpin the formation of rocky (C, O, Mg, Si) and gas/ice giant planets (C, N, O, S). We calculate 198 galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models of the solar neighbourhood to analyse the impact of different sets of stellar yields, of the upper mass limit for massive stars contributing to GCE ($M_{\rm up}$) and of supernovae from massive-star progenitors which do not eject the bulk of the iron-peak elements (faint supernovae). Even considering the GCE variation produced via different sets of stellar yields, the observed dispersion of elements reported for stars in the Milky Way disk is not reproduced. Among others, the observed range of super-solar [Mg/Si] ratios, sub-solar [S/N], and the dispersion of up to 0.5 dex for [S/Si] challenge our models. The impact of varying $M_{\rm up}$ depends on the adopted supernova yields. Thus, observations do not provide a constraint on the M$_{\rm up}$ parametrization. When including the impact of faint supernova models in GCE calculations, elemental ratios vary by up to 0.1-0.2 dex in the Milky Way disk; this modification better reproduces observations., Comment: 36 pages, 26 figures, 1 Table, 1 Appendix, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Radio-mode feedback is a key ingredient in galaxy formation and evolution models, required to reproduce the observed properties of massive galaxies in the local Universe. We study the cosmic evolution of radio-AGN feedback out to $z\sim2.5$ using a sample of 9485 radio-excess AGN. We combine the evolving radio luminosity functions with a radio luminosity scaling relationship to estimate AGN jet kinetic powers and derive the cosmic evolution of the kinetic luminosity density, $\Omega_{\rm{kin}}$ (i.e. the volume-averaged heating output). Compared to all radio-AGN, low-excitation radio galaxies (LERGs) dominate the feedback activity out to $z\sim2.5$, with both these populations showing a constant heating output of $\Omega_{\rm{kin}} \approx 4-5 \times 10^{32}\,\rm{W\,Mpc^{-3}}$ across $0.5 < z < 2.5$. We compare our observations to predictions from semi-analytical and hydrodynamical simulations, which broadly match the observed evolution in $\Omega_{\rm{kin}}$, although their absolute normalisation varies. Comparison to the Semi-Analytic Galaxy Evolution (SAGE) model suggests that radio-AGN may provide sufficient heating to offset radiative cooling losses, providing evidence for a self-regulated AGN feedback cycle. We integrate the kinetic luminosity density across cosmic time to obtain the kinetic energy density output from AGN jets throughout cosmic history to be $\sim 10^{50}\,\rm{J\,Mpc^{-3}}$. Compared to AGN winds, the kinetic energy density from AGN jets dominates the energy budget at $z \lesssim 2$; this suggests that AGN jets play an important role in AGN feedback across most of cosmic history., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The formation of helium cavities in coarse-grained materials produces hardening proportional to the number density and size of the cavities and due to the interaction of dislocations with intragranular helium defects. In nanostructured metals containing a high density of interfacial sinks, preferential cavity formation on the grain boundaries instead produces softening and often attributed to enhanced interfacial plasticity. Employing two grades of ultrafine-grained tungsten, we explore this effect using targeted implantation studies to map cavity evolution as a function of the irradiation conditions and quantify its impact on the mechanical response through nanoindentation. Softening is reported at implantation temperatures above the threshold for preferential grain boundary cavity formation but at a sufficiently low fluence prior to the growth of intragranular cavities. Collective changes in the mean cavity size, density, and morphology beneath a residual impression on an implanted surface indicate that cavity coalescence accompanied the reduction in hardness. Complementary atomistic simulations demonstrate that, in tungsten grain structures exhibiting softening, grain boundary bubble coalescence is driven by stress concentrations that further act to localize strain in the grain boundaries through cooperative deformation processes involving local atomic shuffling and sliding, dislocation emission, and even the nucleation of unstable twinning events.
