Methane (CH4) emissions from natural landscapes constitute roughly half of global CH4 contributions to the atmosphere, yet large uncertainties remain in the absolute magnitude and the seasonality of emission quantities and drivers. Eddy covariance (EC) measurements of CH4 flux are ideal for constraining ecosystem-scale CH4 emissions due to quasi-continuous and high-temporal-resolution CH4 flux measurements, coincident carbon dioxide, water, and energy flux measurements, lack of ecosystem disturbance, and increased availability of datasets over the last decade. Here, we (1) describe the newly published dataset, FLUXNET-CH4 Version 1.0, the first open-source global dataset of CH4 EC measurements (available at https://fluxnet.org/data/fluxnet-ch4-community-product/, last access: 7 April 2021). FLUXNET-CH4 includes half-hourly and daily gap-filled and non-gap-filled aggregated CH4 fluxes and meteorological data from 79 sites globally: 42 freshwater wetlands, 6 brackish and saline wetlands, 7 formerly drained ecosystems, 7 rice paddy sites, 2 lakes, and 15 uplands. Then, we (2) evaluate FLUXNET-CH4 representativeness for freshwater wetland coverage globally because the majority of sites in FLUXNET-CH4 Version 1.0 are freshwater wetlands which are a substantial source of total atmospheric CH4 emissions; and (3) we provide the first global estimates of the seasonal variability and seasonality predictors of freshwater wetland CH4 fluxes. Our representativeness analysis suggests that the freshwater wetland sites in the dataset cover global wetland bioclimatic attributes (encompassing energy, moisture, and vegetation-related parameters) in arctic, boreal, and temperate regions but only sparsely cover humid tropical regions. Seasonality metrics of wetland CH4 emissions vary considerably across latitudinal bands. In freshwater wetlands (except those between 20g g€¯S to 20g g€¯N) the spring onset of elevated CH4 emissions starts 3g€¯d earlier, and the CH4 emission season lasts 4g€¯d longer, for each degree Celsius increase in mean annual air temperature. On average, the spring onset of increasing CH4 emissions lags behind soil warming by 1 month, with very few sites experiencing increased CH4 emissions prior to the onset of soil warming. In contrast, roughly half of these sites experience the spring onset of rising CH4 emissions prior to the spring increase in gross primary productivity (GPP). The timing of peak summer CH4 emissions does not correlate with the timing for either peak summer temperature or peak GPP. Our results provide seasonality parameters for CH4 modeling and highlight seasonality metrics that cannot be predicted by temperature or GPP (i.e., seasonality of CH4 peak). FLUXNET-CH4 is a powerful new resource for diagnosing and understanding the role of terrestrial ecosystems and climate drivers in the global CH4 cycle, and future additions of sites in tropical ecosystems and site years of data collection will provide added value to this database. All seasonality parameters are available at 10.5281/zenodo.4672601 (Delwiche et al., 2021). Additionally, raw FLUXNET-CH4 data used to extract seasonality parameters can be downloaded from https://fluxnet.org/data/fluxnet-ch4-community-product/ (last access: 7 April 2021), and a complete list of the 79 individual site data DOIs is provided in Table 2 of this paper.

- Abstract
To understand patterns in CO
2 partial pressure (PCO2 ) over time in wetlands' surface water and porewater, we examined the relationship between PCO2 and land–atmosphere flux of CO2 at the ecosystem scale at 22 Northern Hemisphere wetland sites synthesized through an open call. Sites spanned 6 major wetland types (tidal, alpine, fen, bog, marsh, and prairie pothole/karst), 7 Köppen climates, and 16 different years. Ecosystem respiration (Reco ) and gross primary production (GPP), components of vertical CO2 flux, were compared to PCO2 , a component of lateral CO2 flux, to determine if photosynthetic rates and soil respiration consistently influence wetland surface and porewater CO2 concentrations across wetlands. Similar to drivers of primary productivity at the ecosystem scale, PCO2 was strongly positively correlated with air temperature (Tair ) at most sites. Monthly average PCO2 tended to peak towards the middle of the year and was more strongly related to Reco than GPP. Our results suggest Reco may be related to biologically driven PCO2 in wetlands, but the relationship is site-specific and could be an artifact of differently timed seasonal cycles or other factors. Higher levels of discharge do not consistently alter the relationship between Reco and temperature normalized PCO2 . This work synthesizes relevant data and identifies key knowledge gaps in drivers of wetland respiration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The exchange of trace gases between the biosphere and the atmosphere is an important process that controls both chemical and physical properties of the atmosphere with implications for air quality and climate change. The terrestrial biosphere is a major source of reactive biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) that govern atmospheric concentrations of the hydroxy radical (OH) and ozone (O3) and control the formation and growth of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Common simulations of BVOC surface–atmosphere exchange in chemical transport models use parameterizations derived from the growing season and do not consider potential changes in emissions during seasonal transitions. Here, we use observations of BVOCs over a mixed temperate forest in northern Wisconsin during broadleaf senescence to better understand the effects of the seasonal changes in canopy conditions (e.g., temperature, sunlight, leaf area, and leaf stage) on net BVOC exchange. The BVOCs investigated here include the terpenoids isoprene (C5H8), monoterpenes (MTs; C10H16), a monoterpene oxide (C10H16O), and sesquiterpenes (SQTs; C15H24), as well as a subset of other monoterpene oxides and dimethyl sulfide (DMS). During this period, MTs were primarily composed of α -pinene, β -pinene, and camphene, with α -pinene and camphene dominant during the first half of September and β -pinene thereafter. We observed enhanced MT and monoterpene oxide emissions following the onset of leaf senescence and suggest that senescence has the potential to be a significant control on late-season MT emissions in this ecosystem. We show that common parameterizations of BVOC emissions cannot reproduce the fluxes of MT, C10H16O , and SQT during the onset and continuation of senescence but can correctly simulate isoprene flux. We also describe the impact of the MT emission enhancement on the potential to form highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs). The calculated production rates of HOMs and H2SO4 , constrained by terpene and DMS concentrations, suggest that biogenic aerosol formation and growth in this region should be dominated by secondary organics rather than sulfate. Further, we show that models using parameterized MT emissions likely underestimate HOM production, and thus aerosol growth and formation, during early autumn in this region. Further measurements of forest–atmosphere BVOC exchange during seasonal transitions as well as measurements of DMS in temperate regions are needed to effectively predict the effects of canopy changes on reactive carbon cycling and aerosol production. - Abstract
The following authors were omitted from the original version of this Data Descriptor: Markus Reichstein and Nicolas Vuichard. Both contributed to the code development and N. Vuichard contributed to the processing of the ERA-Interim data downscaling. Furthermore, the contribution of the co-author Frank Tiedemann was re-evaluated relative to the colleague Corinna Rebmann, both working at the same sites, and based on this re-evaluation a substitution in the co-author list is implemented (with Rebmann replacing Tiedemann). Finally, two affiliations were listed incorrectly and are corrected here (entries 190 and 193). The author list and affiliations have been amended to address these omissions in both the HTML and PDF versions.

Methane (CH$_{4}$) emissions from natural landscapes constitute roughly half of global CH$_{4}$ contributions to the atmosphere, yet large uncertainties remain in the absolute magnitude and the seasonality of emission quantities and drivers. Eddy covariance (EC) measurements of CH$_{4}$ flux are ideal for constraining ecosystem-scale CH$_{4}$ emissions due to quasi-continuous and high-temporal-resolution CH$_{4}$ flux measurements, coincident carbon dioxide, water, and energy flux measurements, lack of ecosystem disturbance, and increased availability of datasets over the last decade. Here, we (1) describe the newly published dataset, FLUXNET-CH$_{4}$ Version 1.0, the first open-source global dataset of CH$_{4}$ EC measurements (available at https://fluxnet.org/data/fluxnet-ch4-community-product/, last access: 7 April 2021). FLUXNET-CH4 includes half-hourly and daily gap-filled and non-gap-filled aggregated CH$_{4}$ fluxes and meteorological data from 79 sites globally: 42 freshwater wetlands, 6 brackish and saline wetlands, 7 formerly drained ecosystems, 7 rice paddy sites, 2 lakes, and 15 uplands. Then, we (2) evaluate FLUXNET-CH$_{4}$ representativeness for freshwater wetland coverage globally because the majority of sites in FLUXNET-CH$_{4}$ Version 1.0 are freshwater wetlands which are a substantial source of total atmospheric CH$_{4}$ emissions; and (3) we provide the first global estimates of the seasonal variability and seasonality predictors of freshwater wetland CH$_{4}$ fluxes. Our representativeness analysis suggests that the freshwater wetland sites in the dataset cover global wetland bioclimatic attributes (encompassing energy, moisture, and vegetation-related parameters) in arctic, boreal, and temperate regions but only sparsely cover humid tropical regions. Seasonality metrics of wetland CH$_{4}$ emissions vary considerably across latitudinal bands. In freshwater wetlands (except those between 20° S to 20° N) the spring onset of elevated CH$_{4}$ emissions starts 3 d earlier, and the CH$_{4}$ emission season lasts 4 d longer, for each degree Celsius increase in mean annual air temperature. On average, the spring onset of increasing CH$_{4}$ emissions lags behind soil warming by 1 month, with very few sites experiencing increased CH$_{4}$ emissions prior to the onset of soil warming. In contrast, roughly half of these sites experience the spring onset of rising CH$_{4}$ emissions prior to the spring increase in gross primary productivity (GPP). The timing of peak summer CH$_{4}$ emissions does not correlate with the timing for either peak summer temperature or peak GPP. Our results provide seasonality parameters for CH$_{4}$ modeling and highlight seasonality metrics that cannot be predicted by temperature or GPP (i.e., seasonality of CH$_{4}$ peak). FLUXNET-CH$_{4}$ is a powerful new resource for diagnosing and understanding the role of terrestrial ecosystems and climate drivers in the global CH$_{4}$ cycle, and future additions of sites in tropical ecosystems and site years of data collection will provide added value to this database. All seasonality parameters are available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4672601 (Delwiche et al., 2021). Additionally, raw FLUXNET-CH$_{4}$ data used to extract seasonality parameters can be downloaded from https://fluxnet.org/data/fluxnet-ch4-community-product/ (last access: 7 April 2021), and a complete list of the 79 individual site data DOIs is provided in Table 2 of this paper.

The exchange of trace gases between the biosphere and the atmosphere is an important process that controls both chemical and physical properties of the atmosphere with implications for air quality and climate change. The terrestrial biosphere is a major source of reactive biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) that govern atmospheric concentrations of the hydroxy radical (OH) and ozone (O
3 ). The oxidation of BVOC leads to the production of low-volatility products that can undergo homogenous nucleation or condense onto existing particles leading to formation and growth of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Over forests, the net surface-atmosphere exchange of BVOC depends on the unique physiochemical properties of individual compounds as well as the mean physical conditions of the forest canopy that control surface emissions (e.g., temperature, sunlight, leaf area) and loss processes (e.g., uptake through stomata, surface adhesion). Here, we present measurements of BVOC mixing ratios and vertical fluxes over a mixed temperate forest in Northern Wisconsin during broadleaf senescence occurring in the summer-autumn transition. We use these observations to better understand the effects of changes in canopy conditions on net BVOC exchange. The BVOC investigated here include the terpenoids isoprene (C5 H8 ), monoterpene hydrocarbons (MT; C10 H16 ), a monoterpene oxide (C10 H16 O) and sesquiterpenes (SQT; C15 H24 ), as well as a subset of MT oxidation products and dimethyl sulfide (DMS). During this period, MTs were primarily composed of α-pinene, β-pinene, and camphene, where α-pinene and camphene were dominant during the first half of September and β-pinene thereafter. We observed enhanced net MT emissions following the onset of leaf senescence, suggesting that senescence and abscission may be significant controls governing late season MT emissions in this ecosystem. We describe the impact of this MT emissions enhancement and shift in speciation on the potential to form highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOM). The calculated production rates of HOM and H2 SO4 , constrained by terpene and DMS concentrations, suggest that biogenic aerosol formation and growth in this region should be dominated by secondary organics rather than sulfate. Further, we show that models using parameterized MT emissions likely underestimate HOM production, and thus aerosol growth and formation, during early autumn in this region. Further measurements of forest-atmosphere BVOC exchange during seasonal transitions as well as measurements of DMS in temperate regions are needed to effectively predict the effects of canopy changes on reactive carbon cycling and the relative contributions to aerosol production.

The FLUXNET2015 dataset provides ecosystem-scale data on CO2, water, and energy exchange between the biosphere and the atmosphere, and other meteorological and biological measurements, from 212 sites around the globe (over 1500 site-years, up to and including year 2014). These sites, independently managed and operated, voluntarily contributed their data to create global datasets. Data were quality controlled and processed using uniform methods, to improve consistency and intercomparability across sites. The dataset is already being used in a number of applications, including ecophysiology studies, remote sensing studies, and development of ecosystem and Earth system models. FLUXNET2015 includes derived-data products, such as gap-filled time series, ecosystem respiration and photosynthetic uptake estimates, estimation of uncertainties, and metadata about the measurements, presented for the first time in this paper. In addition, 206 of these sites are for the first time distributed under a Creative Commons (CC-BY 4.0) license. This paper details this enhanced dataset and the processing methods, now made available as open-source codes, making the dataset more accessible, transparent, and reproducible. AUTOMATIC meteorological stations ,WEATHER forecasting ,METEOROLOGICAL stations - Abstract
This report reviews 2012-2013 field season activities of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Antarctic Automatic Weather Station (AWS) program, summarizes the science that these sites are supporting, and outlines the factors that impact the number of AWS sites serviced in any given field season. The 2012-2013 austral summer season was unusual in the AWS network history. Challenges encountered include, but are not limited to, warmer than normal conditions in the Ross Island area impacting airfield operations, changes to logistical procedures, and competition for shared resources. A flexible work plan provides the best means for taking on these challenges while maximizing AWS servicing efforts under restricted conditions and meeting the need for routine servicing that maintaining an autonomous observing network demands. This paper details this enhanced dataset and the processing methods, now made available as open-source codes, making the dataset more accessible, transparent, and reproducible., Scientific Data, 7, ISSN:2052-4463
44. Drifting snow threshold measurements near McMurdo station, Antarctica: A sensor comparison study

- Abstract
We present the results of an Antarctic spring field study of snow drift threshold measurements made using two custom drift sensors and a commercial parts-counting device. All three sensor types worked well at detecting drifting snow events, but the sensors recorded different magnitudes (particle count per unit time) of drift. Each sensor has a unique detection threshold for particle size, and responded differently to identical wind and snow conditions, although the particle counts from the different sensors are linearly related at low wind speeds. The drift threshold is defined here as the minimum friction velocity at which drifting snow was observed during more than 10% of measurements at that wind speed. The results of this multi-sensor study demonstrate that the drift threshold is lower (friction velocity of 0.2. m/s) for very small particles that are likely transported in suspension than for coarse-grained saltating particles (0.25. m/s). These friction velocities correspond to 10-meter wind speeds of 5.6 and 7.2. m/s respectively for the conditions during this experiment. The commercially available parts counter is recommended as a low-cost alternative to custom-built drift sensors for use in future field studies of drifting and blowing snow. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

In freshwater wetlands (except those between 20 S to 20 N) the spring onset of elevated CH$_{4}$ emissions starts 3 d earlier, and the CH$_{4}$ emission season lasts 4 d longer, for each degree Celsius increase in mean annual air temperature.
