This study presents an innovative dynamic weighting knowledge distillation (KD) framework tailored for efficient Earth observation (EO) image classification (IC) in resource-constrained settings. Utilizing EfficientViT and MobileViT as teacher models, this framework enables lightweight student models, particularly ResNet8 and ResNet16, to surpass 90% in accuracy, precision, and recall, adhering to the stringent confidence thresholds necessary for reliable classification tasks. Unlike conventional KD methods that rely on static weight distribution, our adaptive weighting mechanism responds to each teacher model's confidence, allowing student models to prioritize more credible sources of knowledge dynamically. Remarkably, ResNet8 delivers substantial efficiency gains, achieving a 97.5% reduction in parameters, a 96.7% decrease in FLOPs, an 86.2% cut in power consumption, and a 63.5% increase in inference speed over MobileViT. This significant optimization of complexity and resource demands establishes ResNet8 as an optimal candidate for EO tasks, combining robust performance with feasibility in deployment. Earth observation (EO) systems are essential for mapping, catastrophe monitoring, and resource management, but they have trouble processing and sending large amounts of EO data efficiently, especially for specialized applications like agriculture and real-time disaster response. This paper presents a novel framework for semantic communication in EO satellite networks, aimed at enhancing data transmission efficiency and system performance through cognitive processing techniques. The proposed system leverages Discrete Task-Oriented Joint Source-Channel Coding (DT-JSCC) and Semantic Data Augmentation (SA) integrate cognitive semantic processing with inter-satellite links, enabling efficient analysis and transmission of multispectral imagery for improved object detection, pattern recognition, and real-time decision-making. Earth Observation (EO) systems are crucial for cartography, disaster surveillance, and resource administration. Nonetheless, they encounter considerable obstacles in the processing and transmission of extensive data, especially in specialized domains such as precision agriculture and real-time disaster response. Earth observation satellites, outfitted with remote sensing technology, gather data from onboard sensors and IoT-enabled terrestrial objects, delivering important information remotely. Domain-adapted Large Language Models (LLMs) provide a solution by enabling the integration of raw and processed EO data. Through domain adaptation, LLMs improve the assimilation and analysis of many data sources, tackling the intricacies of specialized datasets in agriculture and disaster response. This data synthesis, directed by LLMs, enhances the precision and pertinence of conveyed information. This study provides a thorough examination of using semantic inference and deep learning for sophisticated EO systems. This study focuses on identifying the most effective pre-trained model for land use classification in onboard satellite processing, emphasizing achieving high accuracy, computational efficiency, and robustness against noisy data conditions commonly encountered during satellite-based inference. Through extensive experimentation, we compare the performance of traditional CNN-based, ResNet-based, and various pre-trained vision Transformer models. Our findings demonstrate that pre-trained Vision Transformer (ViT) models, particularly MobileViTV2 and EfficientViT-M2, outperform models trained from scratch in terms of accuracy and efficiency. These models achieve high performance with reduced computational requirements and exhibit greater resilience during inference under noisy conditions. While MobileViTV2 has excelled on clean validation data, EfficientViT-M2 has proved more robust when handling noise, making it the most suitable model for onboard satellite EO tasks. Our experimental results demonstrate that EfficientViT-M2 is the optimal choice for reliable and efficient RS-IC in satellite operations, achieving 98.76 % of accuracy, precision, and recall. Precisely, EfficientViT-M2 delivers the highest performance across all metrics, excels in training efficiency (1,000s) and inference time (10s), and demonstrates greater robustness (overall robustness score of 0.79). Consequently, EfficientViT-M2 consumes 63.93 % less power than MobileViTV2 (79.23 W) and 73.26 % less power than SwinTransformer (108.90 W). This highlights its significant advantage in energy efficiency.

The Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) aims to enable disaggregated, virtualized, programmable, and data-driven intelligent network with open interfaces to support various real-time and non-real-time applications for different classes of users and multiple industry verticals in beyond 5G and 6G networks while providing interoperability among multi-vendor network functions and components. In this article, we first discuss the evolution of RAN and then the O-RAN Alliance standardization activities and objectives to provide a comprehensive overview of O-RAN from a standardization point of view. Then, we discuss the O-RAN security aspects, use cases, deployment aspects, and open source projects and related activities in other forums. Finally, we summarize the open issues, challenges, and future research directions to explore further for in-depth study and analysis.

Network slicing (NS) and multi-access edge computing (MEC) are new paradigms which play key roles in 5G and beyond networks. NS allows network operators (NOs) to divide the available network resources into multiple logical NSs for providing dedicated virtual networks tailored to the specific service/business requirements. MEC enables NOs to provide diverse ultra-low latency services for supporting the needs of different industry verticals by moving computing facilities to the network edge. NS can be constructed by instantiating a set of virtual network functions (VNFs) on top of MEC cloud servers for provisioning diverse latency-sensitive communication services (e.g., autonomous driving and augmented reality) on demand at a lesser cost and time. However, VNFs, MEC cloud servers, and communication links are subject to failures due to software bugs, misconfiguration, overloading, hardware faults, cyber attacks, power outage, and natural/man-made disaster. Failure of a critical network component disrupts services abruptly and leads to users' dissatisfaction, which may result in revenue loss for the NOs. In this paper, we present a novel approach based on multi-connectivity in 5G networks to tackle this problem and our proposed approach is resilient against i) failure of VNFs, ii) failure of local servers within MEC, iii) failure of communication links, and iv) failure of an entire MEC cloud facility in regional level. To this end, we formulate the problem as a binary integer programming (BIP) model in order to optimally deploy NSs with the minimum cost, and prove it is NP-hard. To overcome time complexity, we propose an efficient genetic algorithm based heuristic to obtain near-optimal solution in polynomial time. By extensive simulations, we show that our proposed approach not only reduces resource wastage, but also improves throughput while providing high resiliency against failures.

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) play crucial roles in 5G networks for dynamically provisioning diverse communication services with heterogeneous service requirements. In particular, while NFV improves flexibility and scalability by softwarizing physical network functions as Virtual Network Functions (VNFs), MEC enables to provide delay-sensitive/time-critical services by moving computing facilities to the network edge. However, these new paradigms introduce challenges in terms of latency, availability, and resource allocation. In this paper, we first explore MEC cloud facility location selection and then latency-aware placement of VNFs in different selected locations of NFV enabled MEC cloud facilities in order to meet the ultra-low latency requirements of different applications (e.g., Tactile Internet, virtual reality, and mission-critical applications). Furthermore, we also aim to guarantee the survivability of VNFs and an edge server against failures in resource limited MEC cloud facility due to software bugs, configuration faults, etc. To this end, we formulate the problem of latency-aware and survivable mapping of VNFs in different MEC cloud facilities as an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) to minimize the overall service provisioning cost, and show that the problem is NP-hard. Owing to the high computational complexity of solving the ILP, we propose a simulated annealing based heuristic algorithm to obtain near-optimal solution in polynomial time. With extensive simulations, we show the effectiveness of our proposed solution in a real-world network topology, which performs close to the optimal solution.

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) allows flexibility, scalability, agility, and easy manageability of networks by leveraging the features of virtualization and cloud computing technologies. However, softwarization of network functions imposes many challenges. Reliability and latency are major challenges in NFV-enabled 5G networks that can lead to customer dissatisfaction and revenue loss. In general, redundancy is used to improve the reliability of communication services. However, redundancy requires the same amount of additional resources and thus increases cost. In this work, we address the reliability-aware, delay guaranteed, and resource efficient Service Function Chain (SFC) placement problem in softwarized 5G networks. First, we propose a novel SFC subchaining method to enhance the reliability of an SFC without backups. If reliability requirement is not met after subchaining method, we add backups to VNFs to meet the reliability requirement. Then, we formulate the reliable SFC placement problem as an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) problem in order to solve it optimally. Owing to high computational complexity of the ILP problem for solving large input instances, we propose a modified stable matching algorithm to provide near-optimal solution in polynomial time. Although network functions virtualization and software-defined networking offer many dynamic features such as flexibility, scalability, and programmability for easy provisioning of services at a lesser cost and time through service function chaining, it introduces new challenges in terms of reliability, availability, and latency of services.
