- Abstract
Wildland fires have a multitude of ecological effects in forests, woodlands, and savannas across the globe. A major focus of past research has been on tree mortality from fire, as trees provide a vast range of biological services. We assembled a database of individual-tree records from prescribed fires and wildfires in the United States. The Fire and Tree Mortality (FTM) database includes records from 164,293 individual trees with records of fire injury (crown scorch, bole char, etc.), tree diameter, and either mortality or top-kill up to ten years post-fire. Data span 142 species and 62 genera, from 409 fires occurring from 1981-2016. Additional variables such as insect attack are included when available. The FTM database can be used to evaluate individual fire-caused mortality models for pre-fire planning and post-fire decision support, to develop improved models, and to explore general patterns of individual fire-induced tree death. The database can also be used to identify knowledge gaps that could be addressed in future research.

3. What We Mean by Scope and Methods: A Survey of Undergraduate Scope and Methods Courses

- Abstract
Self-reflective political scientists have extensively reviewed the history of the discipline and argued over its future, but to date there has been little effort to systematically survey undergraduate scope and methods courses (for an exception see Thies and Hogan 2005). This lack of data leaves the discipline unable to assess how much we are teaching undergraduates about the scope of political science or, indeed, what we mean by the scope of the discipline. Similarly, though there have been many battles waged over the appropriateness of various methodologies, it is not clear how much of this discussion, or how many of these methods, make it into the undergraduate classroom. Survey results from a nation-wide sample of political science departments indicate that most departments require a scope and methods course of their majors and that, while there is a great deal of variety in topics covered, some common themes exist and some common assignments are used.

4. A Crash Course in Learning Communities for the Political Scientist

- Abstract
The evidence on learning communities suggests that student intellectual and psychosocial development is improved by participation. Faculty members become rejuvenated as learners once again through rediscovering the boundaries and intersection of their discipline with others. Active learning, collaborative learning, strategies to improve critical thinking, and connections between in-class and out-of-class activities all are harnessed toward the goal of creating real learning that forms an individual capable of making informed choices in a democratic society. Political scientists should be at the forefront of civic-minded curricular reform, and learning communities are one fruitful avenue to pursue toward that end. In this article, the author provides a general introduction to the learning community concept for political scientists. He explains why learning communities are a useful curricular innovation for both students and faculty, describes some of the general models used for creating learning communities, provides examples particularly relevant to political scientists, and concludes with some of the practical matters that need to be addressed in order to initiate and sustain learning communities. Using 4.68 fb^{-1} of e^+e^- annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) we have studied tau radiative decays tau -> mu nu nu gamma and tau -> e nu nu gamma. For a 10 MeV minimum photon energy in the tau rest frame, the branching fraction of radiative tau decay to a muon or electron is measured to be (3.61+-0.16+-0.35)*10^{-3} or (1.75+-0.06+-0.17)*10^{-2}, respectively. - Abstract
We argue that democratic institutions influence property rights in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) by providing: (1) a coherent logic to the property rights regime that is created in a state and (2) a legitimate way to manage conflicts that arise in dynamic economies. We expect that the marginal effect of property rights in attracting FDI has increased over time with the rate of technological dynamism. We test this using a non-nested multilevel modeling strategy with random coefficients on data from 1970 to 2009. Our results demonstrate that the effect of property rights on attracting FDI is contingent on democratic institutions and that this effect becomes more pronounced over time. This effect holds for both developing and developed countries across all regions.

Using a sample of 4.7 fb-1 integrated luminosity accumulated with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), we investigate the mass spectrum and resonant structure in τ- →Κ-π+π-ντ decays. We measure the relative fractions of Κ1(1270) and Κ1(1400) resonances in these decays, as well as the Κ1 masses and widths. Our fitted Κ1 resonances are somewhat broader than previous hadroproduction measurements, and in agreement with recent CERN LEP results from tau decay. The larger central value of our measured width supports models which attribute the small τ-→Κ-π+π -ντ branching fraction to larger Κ1 widths than are presently tabulated. We also determine the Κa-Κb mixing angle θΚ. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

We report on a study of the invariant mass spectrum of the hadronic system in the decay τ-→π-π0ντ. This study was performed with data obtained with the CLEO II detector operating at the CESR e+e- collider. We present fits to phenomenological models in which resonance parameters associated with the ρ(770) and ρ(1450) mesons are determined. The π-π0 spectral function inferred from the invariant mass spectrum is compared with data on e+e-π+π- as a test of the conserved vector current theorem. We also discuss the implications of our data with regard to estimates of the hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

The resonant structure of the four pion final state in the decay τ→3 ππ0ντ has been analyzed using 4.27 million τ+τ- pairs collected by the CLEO II experiment at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. A partial wave analysis of the resonant structure of the τ→3 ππ0ντ decay has been performed; the spectral decomposition of the four pion system is dominated by the ωπ and a1π final states. The mass and width of the ρ′ resonance have been extracted from a fit to the τ→ωπντ spectral function. We have searched for second class currents in the decay τ→ωπντ using spin-parity analysis and established an upper limit on the non-vector current contribution. © 2000 The American Physical Society.

37. Ethanol and acetone from Douglas-fir roots stressed by Phellinus sulphurascens infection: Implications for detecting diseased trees and for beetle host selection.

Phellinus sulphurascens (previously the Douglas-fir form of Phellinus weirii ) is an important native pathogen causing laminated root rot in forests of western North America. Visual crown symptoms, or attacks by bark or ambrosia beetles appear only during advanced stages of the disease with extensive infection in the lower bole. Ethanol synthesis is one of many physiological responses in tree tissues stressed by pathogens. Ethanol, acetone and other volatiles from root tissues of healthy and diseased trees were analyzed using headspace gas chromatography. Xylem and phloem from 20 diseased trees at two western Oregon sites contained higher concentrations of ethanol, acetone, or other headspace volatiles than 20 healthy trees on one or more dates in September, November, or the following May. Root cross-sections from eight diseased trees were sampled along perpendicular transects and found to contain extremely variable ethanol concentrations, with highest xylem quantities in a 0–2 cm zone outside the infection boundary and lowest amounts inside the infection. Acetone concentrations were the opposite. Logistic regression models were built and tested to determine which volatiles could predict diseased trees. A model using xylem ethanol concentrations as the only parameter was selected and validated with measurements from 80 trees on the edges of P. sulphurascens infection centers at two different western Oregon sites. This model successfully predicted trees with laminated root rot (78% overall correct classification and 68% for known diseased trees), but worked best for those with infections observed in both root cores and the root collar (100% correct). Early detection of P. sulphurascens infected trees remains a challenge. Our ethanol analysis method is useful for research, but provides limited benefits for identifying individual P. sulphurascens hazard trees, or for extensive ground surveys in the forest. Whether ethanol is released to the atmosphere in sufficient quantities to confirm infection before the late appearance of crown symptoms, or bark beetles remains unknown. If it is, then development of sensors capable of tree side detection requiring minimal tissue sampling would be useful in managing this disease. We also propose a mechanism for how ethanol with host monoterpenes could play a central role in pioneering bark beetle primary host selection of trees infected with this pathogen.
