Aim: The current study is focused on the development of water-soluble wound dressings, which are potential dressings for the treatment of burn wounds. Materials & methods: Sodium alginate-based dissolvable wound dressings were prepared and loaded with silver nanoparticles and various antibiotics (ampicillin and ciprofloxacin) followed by characterization and in vitro antibacterial studies. Results & conclusions: The prepared sodium alginate-based dissolvable wound dressing exhibited good porosity, water uptake and moisture content, promising antibacterial activity, high absorption capacity of simulated wound exudates, excellent water vapor transmission rate in the range of 2000 to 5000 g/m2 day-1, sustained drug-release profiles and water solubility. The wound dressings were active against Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella aeruginosa strains of bacteria. The results obtained revealed the wound dressing as potential wound dressings for burn wounds and sensitive skin.

Antifungal and antibacterial activities of crude extracts of carpophore compared with those of sclerotium of Pleurotus tuber-regium were investigated on 11 species of bacterial and 3 fungal human pathogens. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of carpophore extract was recorded to be 12.5 mg/mL on Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia cloacae, Proteus mirabilis, P. vulgaris, Klebsiella oxytoca, and K. aerogenes and 6.25 mg/mL on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Mycobacterium smegmatis as well as on all three species of fungal pathogens including Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus, and A. ochraceus. In comparison, the MIC of sclerotium was recorded to be 12.5 mg/mL on Bacillus subtilis and Klebsiella aerogenes; 6.25 mg/mL on Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Enterobacter cloacae, E. coli, Mycobacterium smegmatis, Proteus mirabilis, P. vulgaris, and Klebsiella oxytoca; and 3.13 mg/mL on the three fungal pathogens. Based on the abovementioned figures, it appears that strains of pathogenic fungi tested are much more sensitive to crude extracts than the abovementioned bacteria. In fact, antimicrobial activities of crude extracts of P. tuber-regium, no matter whether it is that of the carpophore or its sclerotium, are in general stronger on human pathogenic fungi than bacteria. These figures also demonstrate that crude extracts of sclerotium show a higher antimicrobial activity than that of carpophore. Carpophores and sclerotia of P. tuber-regium could therefore constitute a source of new molecules potentially more efficient than synthetic products against some human pathogenic fungi and bacteria.

Antifungal and antibacterial activities of crude extracts of 3 tropical mushrooms including Pleurotus sajor-caju, Pleurotus tuber-regium and Lentinus squarrosulus were investigated on eleven species of bacterial and three of fungal human pathogens. For the pathogenic fungi, the Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of carpophore extracts ranged from 0.39 mg/mL to 6.25 mg/mL for Candida albicans, 0.78 mg/mL to 6.25 mg/mL for Aspergillus fumigetus, and 1.56 mg/mL to 6.25 mg/mL for Aspergillus ochraceus. For bacteria, the MIC values ranged from 6.25 mg/mL to 12.5 mg/mL on most Gram positive strains including Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium smegmatis. This MIC value was the same (12.5 mg/mL) for the 3 crude extracts tested on Staphylococcus epidermidis for the Gram positive strains. Gram negative bacteria were generally less sensitive to crude extracts with higher MIC values ranging from 6.25 mg/mL to 12.5 mg/mL for Escherichia coli and Enterobacter cloacae and the same (12.5 mg/mL) for Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella oxytoca, Klebsiella aerogenes and Proteus mirabilis. Based on the above mentioned figures, it appears that strains of pathogenic fungi tested are generally much more sensitive to crude extracts than strains of bacteria. In fact, antimicrobial activities of the 3 crude extracts tested are stronger on human pathogenic fungi than bacteria. These results are evidence that carpophores of the 3 mushrooms species could be a source of new molecules potentially more effective than synthetic products against some human pathogenic fungi and bacteria.

The phytochemical investigation on the chemical constituents of dichloromethane-methanol (1:1) stem-bark extract of Cola lateritia K. Schum. (Sterculiaceae) led to the isolation and characterization of five pentacyclic triterpenoids, one fatty acid and two phytosteroids. The compounds were identified as heptadecanoic acid (1), maslinic acid (2), betulinic acid (3), lupenone (4), lupeol (5), friedelin (6), β-stigmasterol (7) and ß-sitosterol-3-O-ß-D-glucoside (8). Their structures were determined by NMR analysis (1H, 13C, DEPT-135, COSY, HMBC and HSQC), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) and comparisons with published data in the literature. This work, to the best of our knowledge, is the first isolation and identification of these compounds in pure forms from Cola lateritia. Also, compounds 1–3 are reported for the first time from Cola genus. In vitro antibacterial activity of the isolated compounds (1–8) and the crude extract were evaluated against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, Mycobacterium smegmatis, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella oxytoca, Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella aerogenes with streptomycin, nalidixic acid and ampicillin as standard antibacterial drugs. Compound 2 was active against E. faecalis (MIC = 18.5 µg/mL), and it was 6.9 and 28 times lower and active than that of streptomycin (MIC 128 µg/mL) and nalidixic acid (MIC > 512 µg/mL) respectively. All the isolated compounds and crude extract showed significant activities against the tested bacterial strains.

Microbial resistance to current drugs associated with food spoilage and complications in diseases’ treatment have resulted in increased mortality rate globally. Schiff bases are an important versatile class of organic compounds with notable pharmacological properties for various industrial applications. They are usually synthesized from a condensation reaction between a primary amine and a carbonyl. They have a wide range of activities against microbes and demonstrate good antimicrobial activity against fungi, bacteria, parasites, and viruses. The antimicrobial activity of Schiff base ligands is usually better upon metal complexation as a result of their chelating behaviour. The synthesis of Schiff bases and their metal complexes are well-documented. Therefore, it is important to categorize and compile them according to their biological significance. In this review, the antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic and antiviral activity of some selected heterocyclic Schiff bases and their metal complexes are discussed.Keywords: Heterocyclic Schiff bases, Metal complexes, Antibacterial, Antifungal, Antiparasitic, Antiviral

This study reports on the spectroscopic characterization and antimicrobial potency of polyurethane cyclodextrin co-polymerized phosphorylated multiwalled carbon nanotube-doped Ag-TiO2 nanoparticle (pMWCNT-CD/Ag-TiO2) bionanosponge nanocomposite. The synthesis of pMWCNT-CD/Ag-TiO2 bionanosponge nanocomposite was carried out through the combined processes of amidation and polymerization reactions as well as the sol-gel method. The native nanosponge cyclodextrin and phosphorylated multiwalled carbon nanotube-nanosponge CD (pMWCNT-CD) polyurethanes were also prepared, and their antimicrobial activities carried out for comparison purposes. The synthesized bionanosponge polyurethane materials were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Laser Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to give clear information regarding their structural, and dynamic physicochemical properties. The potency tests of the synthesized compounds were carried out against three bacterial strains Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and two fungal representatives Aspergillus ochraceus and Aspergillus fumigatus, using the disc diffusion method. Micro dilution and agar plating were used to determine the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC), respectively. The results obtained revealed that pMWCNT-CD/Ag-TiO2 exhibits superior antibacterial and antifungal activities when compared to the other bionanosponge polymers tested. Thus, the bionanosponge polyurethane pMWCNT-CD/Ag-TiO2 nanocomposite can be considered as an active antimicrobial compound (AMC).
