Abstract

Litter decomposition is a key process for carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems and is mainly controlled by environmental conditions, substrate quantity and quality as well as microbial community abundance and composition. In particular, the effects of climate and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on litter decomposition and its temporal dynamics are of significant importance, since their effects might change over the course of the decomposition process. Within the TeaComposition initiative, we incubated Green and Rooibos teas at 524 sites across nine biomes. We assessed how macroclimate and atmospheric inorganic N deposition under current and predicted scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 8.5) might affect litter mass loss measured after 3 and 12 months. Our study shows that the early to mid-term mass loss at the global scale was affected predominantly by litter quality (explaining 73% and 62% of the total variance after 3 and 12 months, respectively) followed by climate and N deposition. The effects of climate were not litter-specific and became increasingly significant as decomposition progressed, with MAP explaining 2% and MAT 4% of the variation after 12 months of incubation. The effect of N deposition was litter-specific, and significant only for 12-month decomposition of Rooibos tea at the global scale. However, in the temperate biome where atmospheric N deposition rates are relatively high, the 12-month mass loss of Green and Rooibos teas decreased significantly with increasing N deposition, explaining 9.5% and 1.1% of the variance, respectively. The expected changes in macroclimate and N deposition at the global scale by the end of this century are estimated to increase the 12-month mass loss of easily decomposable litter by 1.1–3.5% and of the more stable substrates by 3.8–10.6%, relative to current mass loss. In contrast, expected changes in atmospheric N deposition will decrease the mid-term mass loss of high-quality litter by 1.4–2.2% and that of low-quality litter by 0.9–1.5% in the temperate biome. Our results suggest that projected increases in N deposition may have the capacity to dampen the climate-driven increases in litter decomposition depending on the biome and decomposition stage of substrate.

Abstract

In agricultural areas, ponds are suitable wetland environments to dissipate and reduce the occurrence of pesticides in aquatic environments. However, their impact at a catchment scale is still poorly understood. This study aims to determine how these organic contaminants were trapped in a pond located in an agricultural critical zone from SW France (Auradé catchment). The spatial distribution of pesticide concentrations and their different controlling factors were investigated in waters and sediments collected during two distinct seasons. The results highlighted (i) the link between the presence of the molecules and the agricultural practices upstream, (ii) the influence of hydrological/seasonal conditions, especially on hydrophobic molecule accumulation such as tebuconazole, (iii) the key role of clay content in sediments on the control of moderately hydrophilic pesticides (metolachlor and boscalid), but also the unexpected role of coarse particles for boscalid; and (iv) the influence of sediment depth on pesticide storage. Nevertheless, other physico-chemical parameters, such as mineralogical composition of sediment, needed to be considered to explain the pesticide patterns. This study brings a new hypothesis to be investigated in the future about pesticide behaviour in such pond environments.

3. Stream Hydrochemical Response to Flood Events in a Multi-Lithological Karstic Catchment from the Pyrenees Mountains (SW France)

Abstract

Hydrological variations hold a significant influence over the water chemistry in the karstic critical zone. In this context, the karstic Baget Catchment (BC) has been monitored at a high resolution over two years at the outlet in order to set up a typology of the flood events. The objective was to assess the multiple streamwater physico-chemical patterns in response to hydrological variations, streamflow component (quick-response, subsurface, and baseflow) and lithological contributions, and biogeochemical processes. The karstic catchment exhibited an impulsive response to flood events in relation to the typical structural and morphological characteristics of the karst. In addition, this response was constrained by the magnitude of the rainfall and the preceding hydroclimatic conditions. The variability of the dissolved load in streamflow was closely associated with the characteristics of the weathered rocks and the hydrological conditions throughout the year. Two simple indicators allow to characterize the concentration–discharge relationships with different hysteresis patterns on a set of floods with various intensities and shapes of the hydrograph and under different hydrological conditions before the flood. Almost all elements exhibited either clockwise loops or more complex behaviors, suggesting a higher overall concentration when the major water contribution comes from the quick-response flow (karst and surface runoff fraction). Besides, the epikarst flushing under dry conditions led counterclockwise hysteresis patterns for calcium (Ca2+) and bicarbonate (HCO3−) which revealed an overall chemostatic behavior as a result of carbonate dissolution in the karst. On the contrary, sulfate (SO42−) exhibited the widest relative variation during flooding and showed a significant sensitivity to the dilution process with increasing discharge. For medium flood episodes (Qmax < 4.4 m3·s−1), an overall concentration increase or chemostatic behavior could be observed during the rising limb of the hydrograph. On the opposite, under extreme flood episodes (Qmax > 8.3 m3·s−1) occurring after several rain events, a dilution pattern was noted for all elements originating from rock weathering. Finally, high-frequency sampling during storm events improved the understanding of the factors controlling the hydrochemical dynamic in karstic catchments.

Abstract

Currently, pesticides are massively used in agricultural areas end up in watercourses, as they are usually final receptacles of organic contamination. A large number of wetlands such as ponds occurred in agricultural catchments. They are dynamic and complex systems which contains different compartments like the water column, sediments and biota. The sediment compartment can store contaminants according to their physicochemical properties, but this process is continuously challenged because of settling and resuspension mechanisms. The role of the sediments regarding pesticides behavior and their fate is still poorly investigated. Our study aimed to fill this gap, particularly considering the Bassioué pond, which is located in the carbonated agricultural upper sub-catchment of the Auradé critical zone observatory (Gers, France), with a wheat/sunflower crop rotation and a steep slope enhancing erosion phenomenon. We focused on pesticide storage in the sediments which represent the main compartment due to the environmental conditions. Our current objective was to understand (i) how and where pesticides are stored in the sediments, and (ii) the relationship with the characteristics of sediments, supposed to be highly involved in the storage and degradation of pesticides. Two field campaigns were carried out to collect sediment samples within a regular quadrat from the inlet to the outlet of the pond in autumn 2019 and summer 2020 at different depth. A set of three pesticide was quantified as well as sediment texture. The results highlighted that sediment particle size distribution varied between upstream and downstream of the pond: from the finest to the coarsest; as did the spatial distribution of pesticides. This reveled that pesticides were partly controlled by their physicochemical properties: most hydrophilic pesticides had greater affinity with the finest fractions of the sediments. A difference in pesticide storage according to the depth has been observed, especially for boscalid (logKOW = 3) which was found in greater quantities in the deepest samples, with increasing coarse silt content. Finally, a seasonal effect was also observed on pesticide levels, as their presence was highly driven by firstly their uses in the catchment and secondly by the soil erosion occurring during intense spring flood events. This work provides new knowledge on the role of ponds in pesticide storage, dissipation and transfer downstream, which can·be used for agricultural landscape management.

Abstract

The long-term trends and seasonal patterns of stream water chemical composition in a small remote forested karst catchment, were investigated from 1978 to 2018. Calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonates, the dominant ions, increased over the period together with temperature, while sulfates decreased. Carbonate and sulfate mineral dissolution was the main source of these elements. These trends and the seasonal opposite patterns of discharge vs. temperature, calcite saturation index vs. pCO2 and bicarbonate vs. sulfates, suggested the influence of discharge, of reduced long-range atmospheric pollution, and of increasing air temperature on biological activity and carbonate dissolution. Furthermore, the hydrological regime controlled the seasonal stream water chemical composition and fluxes by: (i) a dilution during the high discharge period, (ii) a change in the contribution rate of the waters draining different lithological areas in the catchment, e.g., the increased sulfates to bicarbonates ratio during summer low flows, with a maximum alkalinity decrease of 24%, and (iii) a “piston” and a “flushing” effects of dissolved elements stored in soils and epikarst with the first autumn heavy rains. Long-term stream water hydrochemical surveys of karst system have proved to be powerful indicators of biogeochemical processes, water sources and pathways under variable natural and anthropogenic environmental pressure conditions.

Abstract

International audience; Thanks to the use of filters collected daily in the west of Paris, we confirm the passage of the lead-laden plume following the fire on the roof and spire of Notre-Dame Cathedral in April 2019. The measured concentrations on the filter (Pb = 1.4 μg m–3), scanning electron microscopy and Hysplit simulation, correspond to an estimate of a few hundred kilograms of lead that would have been volatilized and then oxidized in the form of micronic and submicronic aerosols. The concentrations found in the plume are, however, much lower than those found in the environment in the 1980s and 1990s but are 100 times higher than those found in times prior to and after the fire. The isotopic signature of the plume is almost identical to that of the fine Pb dust found inside the Notre-Dame building. It is different from the isotopic signature of the Parisian atmosphere before and after the fire, but it is similar to that of the atmospheric Pb legacy recorded by peat cores over the last 300 years in France. The presence of very fine lead-bearing particles makes them potentially transportable over long distances after large urban fires. Our study shows the value of daily aerosol sampling to retrospectively trace the plumes of air pollutants from industrial accidents but also from historical monument fires such as Notre-Dame in 2019.

Abstract

International audience; Mitigating and adapting to global changes requires a better understanding of the response of the Biosphere to these environmental variations. Human disturbances and their effects act in the long term (decades to centuries) and consequently, a similar time frame is needed to fully understand the hydrological and biogeochemical functioning of a natural system. To this end, the ‘Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique’ (CNRS) promotes and certifies long-term monitoring tools called national observation services or ‘Service National d'Observation’ (SNO) in a large range of hydrological and biogeochemical systems (e.g., cryosphere, catchments, aquifers). The SNO investigating peatlands, the SNO ‘Tourbières’, was certified in 2011 (https://www.sno-tourbieres.cnrs.fr/). Peatlands are mostly found in the high latitudes of the northern hemisphere and French peatlands are located in the southern part of this area. Thus, they are located in environmental conditions that will occur in northern peatlands in coming decades or centuries and can be considered as sentinels. The SNO Tourbières is composed of four peatlands: La Guette (lowland central France), Landemarais (lowland oceanic western France), Frasne (upland continental eastern France) and Bernadouze (upland southern France). Thirty target variables are monitored to study the hydrological and biogeochemical functioning of the sites. They are grouped into four datasets: hydrology, fluvial export of organic matter, greenhouse gas fluxes and meteorology/soil physics. The data from all sites follow a common processing chain from the sensors to the public repository. The raw data are stored on an FTP server. After operator or automatic processing, data are stored in a database, from which a web application extracts the data to make them available (https://data-snot.cnrs.fr/data-access/). Each year at least, an archive of each dataset is stored in Zenodo, with a digital object identifier (DOI) attribution (https://zenodo.org/communities/sno_tourbieres_data/).

Abstract

International audience; Numerous ponds were constructed along streams for local water supply in agricultural areas of southwestern France. Although the water quality of streams and ponds has been surveyed for nitrate (NO 3 −), the role of ponds in NO 3 − mitigation at a catchment scale has rarely been investigated. Since denitrification in sediments is a key NO 3 − pathway, the denitrification variability in stream and pond sediments and its controlling factors, particularly the pond position and characteristics are important aspects to investigate. Potential denitrification rate (PDR), physico-chemical factors, and denitrification functional genes were quantified in sediments from nine ponds located in three adjacent agricultural catchments in spring period. PDR showed a great spatial variation (both horizontal and vertical) and was mainly driven by the availability of water NO 3 − and sediment organic carbon. Stream discharge and pond hydraulic retention time can also affect PDR in stream and pond sediments, respectively. Although high PDR was observed in stream sediments, stream discharge diluted NO 3 − and can indirectly lower PDR downstream. The function of denitrifiers was revealed by the abundance ratio of nirK/16S rRNA, but no significant relationship was found between PDR and abundance of functional genes. N 2 O emission rate was positively related to PDR, which should be aware of in the upstream PDR hotspot ponds. Simple empirical models based on pond and sediment characteristics were good predictors of PDR, which could also help a better management of ponds by policy makers with the aim to improve NO 3 − mitigation and water quality.

International audience; Currently, pesticides are massively used in agricultural areas end up in watercourses, as they are usually final receptacles of organic contamination. A large number of wetlands such as ponds occurred in agricultural catchments. They are dynamic and complex systems which contains different compartments like the water column, sediments and biota. The sediment compartment can store contaminants according to their physicochemical properties, but this process is continuously challenged because of settling and resuspension mechanisms. The role of the sediments regarding pesticides behavior and their fate is still poorly investigated. Our study aimed to fill this gap, particularly considering the Bassioué pond, which is located in the carbonated agricultural upper sub-catchment of the Auradé critical zone observatory (Gers, France), with a wheat/sunflower crop rotation and a steep slope enhancing erosion phenomenon. We focused on pesticide storage in the sediments which represent the main compartment due to the environmental conditions. Our current objective was to understand (i) how and where pesticides are stored in the sediments, and (ii) the relationship with the characteristics of sediments, supposed to be highly involved in the storage and degradation of pesticides. Two field campaigns were carried out to collect sediment samples within a regular quadrat from the inlet to the outlet of the pond in autumn 2019 and summer 2020 at different depth. A set of three pesticide was quantified as well as sediment texture. The results highlighted that sediment particle size distribution varied between upstream and downstream of the pond: from the finest to the coarsest; as did the spatial distribution of pesticides. This reveled that pesticides were partly controlled by their physicochemical properties: most hydrophilic pesticides had greater affinity with the finest fractions of the sediments. A difference in pesticide storage according to the depth has been observed, especially for boscalid (logK OW = 3) which was found in greater quantities in the deepest samples, with increasing coarse silt content. Finally, a seasonal effect was also observed on pesticide levels, as their presence was highly driven by firstly their uses in the catchment and secondly by the soil erosion occurring during intense spring flood events. This work provides new knowledge on the role of ponds in pesticide storage, dissipation and transfer downstream, which can•be used for agricultural landscape management.

Abstract

The long-term trends and seasonal patterns of stream water chemical composition in a small remote forested karst catchment, were investigated from 1978 to 2018. Calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonates, the dominant ions, increased over the period together with temperature, while sulfates decreased. Carbonate and sulfate mineral dissolution was the main source of these elements. These trends and the seasonal opposite patterns of discharge vs. temperature, calcite saturation index vs. pCO2 and bicarbonate vs. sulfates, suggested the influence of discharge, of reduced long-range atmospheric pollution, and of increasing air temperature on biological activity and carbonate dissolution. Furthermore, the hydrological regime controlled the seasonal stream water chemical composition and fluxes by: (i) a dilution during the high discharge period, (ii) a change in the contribution rate of the waters draining different lithological areas in the catchment, e.g., the increased sulfates to bicarbonates ratio during summer low flows, with a maximum alkalinity decrease of 24%, and (iii) a &ldquo, piston&rdquo, and a &ldquo, flushing&rdquo, effects of dissolved elements stored in soils and epikarst with the first autumn heavy rains. Long-term stream water hydrochemical surveys of karst system have proved to be powerful indicators of biogeochemical processes, water sources and pathways under variable natural and anthropogenic environmental pressure conditions.

Abstract

National audience; Dans le cadre du site " Vallées et Coteaux de Gascogne " (VCG) de la ZA PYGAR, le projet PACSE (Paysages et Compromis entre Services Ecosystémiques-Région Occitanie) vise à identifier les organisations paysagères les plus performantes en termes de biodiversité et de qualité des eaux. Pour cela, il prend en compte les structures de gouvernances pour assurer le meilleur compromis au sein d’un bouquet de services (maintien de la qualité de l’eau, de la pollinisation et de la régulation des ravageurs). Il vise aussi à évaluer les coûts des changements de pratiques nécessaires pour atteindre un tel compromis et leurs intérêts en lien avec la production agricole. Ces compromis " in silico " seront comparés à ceux souhaités ou acceptés par les acteurs locaux, notamment le Groupement des Agriculteurs de la Gascogne Toulousaine (GAGT). Les résultats présentés ici concernent principalement le volet " Agrohydrologie " qui consiste à modéliser la qualité de l’eau sur 3 bassins versants (BV) agricoles représentatifs de VCG (BV expérimental d’Auradé et BVs amont Louge et Touch). Cette approche utilise le modèle agro-hydrologique semi-distribué SWAT (Soil & Water Assessment Tool) qui s’appuie en amont, sur un Système d’Information Géographique (SIG) du BV et en aval, sur des données de qualité des eaux à l’exutoire du BV. Sur le BV d’Auradé (IR OZCAR), les données de qualité des eaux sont issues des mesures haute résolution effectuées depuis de nombreuses années, et sur les BVs de la Louge et du Touch, des mesures haute-résolution ont été réalisées pendant un cycle hydrologique complet. Les données utilisées concernent principalement les débits et les teneurs en nitrates et MES. Le SIG développé sur chacun des BVs inclut les paramètres nécessaires à SWAT (MNT, usage des terres, sols, climatologie). Les résultats présentés portent sur la simulation des variations de débits à l’échelle journalière entre 2011 et2020 et sur les concentrations et les flux de nitrates et de MES à l’exutoire des 3 BVs (Louge, Touch et Auradé). Les débits simulés montrent de très bonnes corrélations avec les débits observés (Nash-Sutcliff : 0,52 à 0,68 ; R2: 0,51 à 0,61). Les valeurs simulées en nitrates (6.12, 7.89 et 32.62 mg/L pour Louge, Touch et Auradé respectivement) et en MES (15.33, 19.64 et 38.32 mg/L respectivement) sont proches des teneurs moyennes observées en nitrates (5.44,7.61 et 31.96 mg/L respectivement) et en MES (11.9, 21.56 et 45.32 mg/L respectivement). Après calibration/validation du modèle SWAT sur ces 3 BVs, cette modélisation va être utilisée pour simuler la qualité des eaux en réponse à différents scénarios d’occupation des sols et d’organisation paysagère comprenant la diversité dans l’espace et le temps de la mosaïque cultivée et la présence de milieux semi-naturels (bois, haies, prairies et zones humides). Tous ces facteurs sont importants pour le maintien de la biodiversité, de la qualité des écosystèmes et des services écosystémiques associés. Ainsi, ces paysages constituent une ressource économique essentielle qu’il convient de préserver et d’organiser au mieux avec les acteurs du territoire dans un objectif de développement durable.

Abstract

In agricultural areas, ponds are suitable wetland environments to dissipate and reduce the occurrence of pesticides in aquatic environments. However, their impact at a catchment scale is still poorly understood. This study aims to determine how these organic contaminants were trapped in a pond located in an agricultural critical zone from SW France (Auradé catchment). The spatial distribution of pesticide concentrations and their different controlling factors were investigated in waters and sediments collected during two distinct seasons. The results highlighted (i) the link between the presence of the molecules and the agricultural practices upstream, (ii) the influence of hydrological/seasonal conditions, especially on hydrophobic molecule accumulation such as tebuconazole, (iii) the key role of clay content in sediments on the control of moderately hydrophilic pesticides (metolachlor and boscalid), but also the unexpected role of coarse particles for boscalid, and (iv) the influence of sediment depth on pesticide storage. Nevertheless, other physico-chemical parameters, such as mineralogical composition of sediment, needed to be considered to explain the pesticide patterns. This study brings a new hypothesis to be investigated in the future about pesticide behaviour in such pond environments.

Abstract

International audience; Mountains contain many small and fragmented peatlands within watersheds. As they are difficult to monitor, their role in the water and carbon cycle is often disregarded. This study aims to assess the stream organic carbon exports from a montane peatland and characterizes its contribution to the water chemistry in a headstream watershed. High frequency in situ monitoring of turbidity and fDOM were used to quantify respectively particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) exports at the inlet and outlet of a peatland over three years in a French Pyrenean watershed (1,343 m.a.s.l.). The DOC and POC signals are both highly dynamic, characterized by numerous short peaks lasting from a few hours to a few days. Forty-six percent of the exports occurred during 9% of the time corresponding to the highest flows monitored at the outlet. Despite its small area (3%) within the watershed, the peatland contributes at least 63% of the DOC export at the outlet. The specific DOC flux ranges from 16.1 ± 0.4 to 34.6 ± 1.5 g m 2 year −1. POC contributes 17% of the total stream organic carbon exports from the watershed. As the frequency of extreme climatic events is expected to increase in the context of climate change, further studies should be conducted to understand the evolution of underestimated mountainous peatland carbon fluxes and their implication in the carbon cycle of headwaters. Plain Language Summary Since the last glacial period, peatlands have accumulated large stocks of organic carbon. Despite representing only 3% of global continental surfaces, they store about 22% of the continental soil carbon stock. In the context of global change, peatland carbon sequestration capacity needs to be carefully monitored. In addition to greenhouse gas exchanges with the atmosphere, determining this capacity requires the quantification of aquatic organic carbon exports. Aquatic organic carbon exports have rarely been investigated at mountainous peatlands. Moreover, global change is expected to drastically modify mountain hydrology, influencing aquatic carbon exports and carbon balance of mountainous peatlands. Using high frequency in situ instrumentation, this study shows the annual quantity of aquatic organic carbon exported from a montane peatland in the French Pyrenees is in the same range as Northern lowland peatlands. These highly variable exports mainly occur during high discharge events due to snowmelt or rainfalls. Despite its restricted area, this montane peatland is the main contributor of aquatic organic carbon in the watershed. Peatlands influence headwater chemistry and further study must be conducted to monitor the evolution of these mountainous carbon stocks.

Abstract

Through litter decomposition enormous amounts of carbon is emitted to the atmosphere. Numerous large-scale decomposition experiments have been conducted focusing on this fundamental soil process in order to understand the controls on the terrestrial carbon transfer to the atmosphere. However, previous studies were mostly based on site-specific litter and methodologies, adding major uncertainty to syntheses, comparisons and meta-analyses across different experiments and sites. In the TeaComposition initiative, the potential litter decomposition is investigated by using standardized substrates (Rooibos and Green tea) for comparison of litter mass loss at 336 sites (ranging from -9 to +26 °C MAT and from 60 to 3113 mm MAP) across different ecosystems. In this study we tested the effect of climate (temperature and moisture), litter type and land-use on early stage decomposition (3 months) across nine biomes. We show that litter quality was the predominant controlling factor in early stage litter decomposition, which explained about 65% of the variability in litter decomposition at a global scale. Abstract

(IF 3.63; Q1); International audience; Karstaquifers and watersheds represent a major source of drinking water around the world. They are also known as complex and often highly vulnerable hydrosystems due to strong surface-groundwater interactions. Improving the understanding of karst functioning is thus a major issue for the efficient management of karst groundwater resources. A comprehensive understanding of the various processes can be achieved only by studying karst systems across a wide range of spatiotemporal scales under different geological, geomorphological, climatic, and soil cover settings. The objective of the French Karst National Observatory Service (SNO KARST) is to supply the international scientific community with appropriate data and tools, with the ambition of (i) facilitating the collection of long-term observations of hydrogeochemical variables in karst, and (ii) promoting knowledge sharing and developing cross-disciplinary research on karst. This paper provides an overview of the monitoring sites and collective achievements, such as the KarstMod modular modeling platform and the PaPRIKa toolbox, of SNO KARST. It also presents the research questions addressed within the framework of this network, along with major research results regarding (i) the hydrological response of karst to climate and anthropogenic changes, (ii) the influence of karst on geochemical balance of watersheds in the critical zone, and (iii) the relationships between the structure and hydrological functioning of karst aquifers and watersheds.
