We present 850 $\mu$m polarization observations of the IC 348 star-forming region in the Perseus molecular cloud as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observation (BISTRO) survey. We study the magnetic properties of two cores (HH 211 MMS and IC 348 MMS) and a filamentary structure of IC 348. We find that the overall field tends to be more perpendicular than parallel to the filamentary structure of the region. The polarization fraction decreases with intensity, and we estimate the trend by power-law and the mean of the Rice distribution fittings. The power indices for the cores are much smaller than 1, indicative of possible grain growth to micron size in the cores. We also measure the magnetic field strengths of the two cores and the filamentary area separately by applying the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and its alternative version for compressed medium. The estimated mass-to-flux ratios are 0.45-2.20 and 0.63-2.76 for HH 211 MMS and IC 348 MMS, respectively, while the ratios for the filament is 0.33-1.50. This result may suggest that the transition from subcritical to supercritical conditions occurs at the core scale ($\sim$ 0.05 pc) in the region. In addition, we study the energy balance of the cores and find that the relative strength of turbulence to the magnetic field tends to be stronger for IC 348 MMS than HH 211 MMS. Low-energy spin-polarized electrons (SPEs) are thought to cause symmetry breaking and could explain the origin of homochirality of prebiotic molecules such as amino acids and sugars. Here we study the effect of cosmic rays (CRs) on the emission of SPEs from aligned grains in dense protostellar environments and explore the SPE effects on chiral asymmetry of prebiotic molecules. We first show that icy grains in protostellar environments can align with magnetic fields due to magnetically enhanced radiative torque mechanism. We then study the production of thermal electrons by CR ionization of the H$_2$ gas and the CR-induced UV radiation using the attenuated CR spectra in dense cores obtained from a continous slowing down model. Next, we show that thermal electrons with initial random spins captured by aligned grains will quickly become spin-polarized due to the Barnett effect, converting unpolarized incident electrons into SPEs. We calculate the rate of photoemission of such SPEs by CRs-induced UV radiation and secondary electron emission from aligned grains and find that the photoemission by CRs-induced UV radiation is dominant. Finally, we calculate the total production rate of SPEs inside aligned dust grains by CRs. Low-energy secondary SPEs from aligned grains induced by CRs would cause the chiral asymmetry of chiral prebiotic molecules formed in the ice mantle of aligned grains, in analogous to UV circularly polarized light. We propose that amino acids and sugars of chiral assymmetry detected in meteorite/asteroids/comets might be formed in the ice mantle of grains under the irradiation of SPEs released from aligned grains by CRs in protostellar environments., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures. In the modern era of rapidly increasing data volumes, accurately retrieving and recommending relevant documents has become crucial in enhancing the reliability of Question Answering (QA) systems. Recently, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) has gained significant recognition for enhancing the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) by mitigating hallucination issues in QA systems, which is particularly beneficial in the legal domain. Various methods, such as semantic search using dense vector embeddings or a combination of multiple techniques to improve results before feeding them to LLMs, have been proposed. However, these methods often fall short when applied to the Vietnamese language due to several challenges, namely inefficient Vietnamese data processing leading to excessive token length or overly simplistic ensemble techniques that lead to instability and limited improvement. Moreover, a critical issue often overlooked is the ordering of final relevant documents which are used as reference to ensure the accuracy of the answers provided by LLMs. In this report, we introduce our three main modifications taken to address these challenges. First, we explore various practical approaches to data processing to overcome the limitations of the embedding model. Additionally, we enhance Reciprocal Rank Fusion by normalizing order to combine results from keyword and vector searches effectively. We also meticulously re-rank the source pieces of information used by LLMs with Active Retrieval to improve user experience when refining the information generated. In our opinion, this technique can also be considered as a new re-ranking method that might be used in place of the traditional cross encoder. (abridged) Together with gravity, turbulence, and stellar feedback, magnetic fields (B-fields) are thought to play a critical role in the evolution of molecular clouds and star formation processes. We aim to map the morphology and measure the strength of B-fields of the nearby molecular cloud, rho Ophiuchus-A ($\rho$ Oph-A), and then to understand the role of B-fields in regulating star formation and shaping the cloud. We have analyzed the far-infrared (FIR) polarization of thermal dust emission observed by SOFIA/HAWC$+$ at 89 and 154 $\mu$m toward the densest part of $\rho$ Oph-A, which is irradiated by the nearby B3/4 star, Oph-S1. The cloud exhibits well-ordered B-fields with magnetic orientations mainly perpendicular to the ridge of the cloud toward the densest region and B-field strengths are in the range of 0.2-2.5 mG, using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. The B-fields are strongest at the densest part of the cloud, which is associated with the starless core SM1, and decreases toward the outskirts of the cloud. By calculating the map of the mass-to-flux ratio, Alfv\'en Mach number, and plasma $\beta$ parameter in $\rho$ Oph-A, we find that the cloud is predominantly magnetically sub-critical, sub-Alfv\'enic, which implies that the cloud is supported by strong B-fields that dominate over gravity, turbulence, and thermal gas energy. Measured B-field strengths at two densest subregions using other methods that account for the compressible mode are relatively lower than that measured with the DCF method but do not significantly change our conclusions on the roles of B-fields relative to gravity and turbulence on star formation. A virial analysis suggests that the cloud is gravitationally unbound. We study simplicity of $C^*$-algebras arising from self-similar groups of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-multispinal type, a generalization of the Grigorchuk case whose simplicity was first proved by L. Clark, R. Exel, E. Pardo, C. Starling, and A. Sims in 2019, and we prove results generalizing theirs. Our first main result is a sufficient condition for simplicity of the Steinberg algebra satisfying conditions modeled on the behavior of the groupoid associated to the first Grigorchuk group. This closely resembles conditions found by B. Steinberg and N. Szak\'acs. As a key ingredient we identify an infinite family of $2-(2q-1,q-1,q/2-1)$-designs, where $q$ is a positive even integer. We then deduce the simplicity of the associated $C^*$-algebra, which is our second main result. Results of similar type were considered by B. Steinberg and N. Szak\'acs in 2021, and later by K. Yoshida, but their methods did not follow the original methods of the five authors.

Polarization of starlight induced by dust grains aligned with the magnetic field (hereafter B-field) is widely used to measure the two-dimensional B-fields projected onto the plane-of-sky. Here, we introduce a new method to infer three-dimensional B-fields using starlight polarization. The B-field's inclination angle or line-of-sight (LOS) component of B-fields is constrained by the starlight polarization efficiency from observations and the alignment degree provided by the magnetically enhanced radiative torque (MRAT) alignment theory. We first perform synthetic observation of starlight polarization of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of a filamentary cloud. We then test the new technique with our updated POLARIS code and find that the B-field's inclination angles can be precisely determined by the starlight polarization efficiency from synthetic observations. Regardless of grain magnetic properties, the technique can provide an accurate constraint on B-field's inclination angles in low-density regions $N_{\rm H} < 5\times 10^{21}\,\cm^{-2}$ (or visual extinction $A_{V}< 3$) using optical polarization, whereas the technique can infer further to high-density regions $N_{\rm H} \sim 5 \times 10^{22}\,\cm^{-2}$ (or $A_{V}\sim 30$) using near-infrared polarization. Iron inclusions embedded inside dust grains play a crucial role in both internal alignment (IA) via Barnett relaxation and external alignment via the MAgnetically Enhanced RAdiative Torque (MRAT) mechanism. Moreover, inelastic relaxation is predicted to dominate over Barnett relaxation in driving the IA of micron-sized and very large grains above $10\mu m$ (VLGs). Yet, a detailed modeling of polarized thermal dust emission from Class 0/I Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) taking into account these effects and their observational constraints is still lacking. In this paper, we update the POLARIS code and use it to perform synthetic dust polarization modeling for MHD simulations of an intermediate-mass YSO. Results will be post-processed with CASA to confront ALMA polarimetric observations. We found that to reproduce the high polarization degree of $p \sim 5-30\%$ observed in protostellar envelopes by ALMA, micron-sized and VLGs must contain iron inclusions with $N_{\rm cl} \sim 5 - 10^{3}$ iron atoms per cluster, assuming $30\%$ of iron abundance locked inside dust grains under the cluster form. Inside the inner $\sim 500$ au region, inelastic relaxation must participate in driving the grain internal alignment, and grains must contain larger iron inclusions of $N_{\rm cl} \sim 10^{2}-10^{4}$ and grow beyond $\geq 10\mu m$ to reproduce $\sim 3-10\%$ of dust polarization observed by ALMA. But given such a combination, the internal alignment and MRAT efficiency acting on VLGs still decrease toward the center, inducing the decrease of $p(\%)$ with increasing gas density, reaching $p \sim 1\%$ inside the disk., Comment: 32 pages, 9 pages in Appendix, resubmitted to ApJ

Using starlight polarization, we present the properties of foreground dust towards cluster NGC 7380 embedded in H{\sc ii} region Sh 2-142. Observations of starlight polarization are carried out in four filters using an imaging polarimeter equipped with a 104-cm ARIES telescope. Polarization vectors of stars are aligned along the Galactic magnetic field. Towards the east and southeast regions, the dust structure appears much denser than in other regions (inferred from extinction contours and colour composite image) and is also reflected in polarization distribution. We find that the polarization degree and extinction tend to increase with distance and indication for the presence of a dust layer at a distance of around 1.2 $kpc$. We have identified eight potential candidates exhibiting intrinsic polarization by employing three distinct criteria to distinguish between stars of intrinsic polarization and interstellar polarized stars. For interstellar polarized stars, we find that the maximum polarization degree increases with the color excess and has a strong scatter, with the mean value of 1.71$\pm$0.57$\%$. The peak wavelength spans $0.40-0.88\mu$m with the mean value of 0.56$\pm$0.07 $\mu m$, suggesting similar grain sizes in the region as the average diffuse interstellar medium. The polarization efficiency is also found to decrease with visual extinction as $P_{max}/A_{V}\propto A_{V}^{-0.61}$. Dust grains are important in various astrophysical processes and serve as indicators of interstellar medium structures, density, and mass. Understanding their physical properties and chemical composition is crucial in astrophysics. Dust polarisation is a valuable tool for studying these properties. The Radiative Torque (RAT) paradigm, which includes Radiative Torque Alignment (RAT-A) and Radiative Torque Disruption (RAT-D), is essential to interpret the dust polarisation data and constrain the fundamental properties of dust grains. However, it has been used primarily to interpret observations at a single wavelength. In this study, we analyse the thermal dust polarisation spectrum obtained from observations with SOFIA/HAWC+ and JCMT/POL-2 in the OMC-1 region and compare the observational data with our numerical results using the RAT paradigm. In general, we show that the dense gas exhibits a positive spectral slope, whereas the warm regions show a negative one. We demonstrate that a one-layer dust (one-phase) model can only reproduce the observed spectra at certain locations and cannot match those with prominent V-shaped spectra (for which the degree of polarisation initially decreases with wavelength from 54 to $\sim$ 300$\,\mu$m and then increases at longer wavelengths). To address this, we improve our model by incorporating two dust components (warm and cold) along the line of sight, resulting in a two-phase model. This improved model successfully reproduces the V-shaped spectra. The best model corresponds to a mixture composition of silicate and carbonaceous grains in the cold medium. Finally, by assuming the plausible model of grain alignment, we infer the inclination angle of the magnetic fields in OMC-1. Polarization of starlight and thermal dust emission caused by aligned dust grains is a valuable tool to characterize magnetic fields (B-fields) and constrain dust properties. However, the physics of grain alignment is not fully understood. To test the popular paradigm of radiative torque (RAT) theory, including RAT alignment (RAT-A) and disruption (RAT-D), we use dust polarization data observed by {\it Planck} and SOFIA/HAWC+ toward two filaments with contrasting physical conditions: Musca, a quiet filament, and OMC-1, a highly dynamic filament due to feedback. We analyze various relations of the observed polarization fraction, $P$, with gas column density, $\NHt$, dust temperature, $\Td$, and polarization angle dispersion function, $\S$. We found that $P$ decreases with increasing $\S$ and increasing $\NHt$, as expected from RAT-A. On the other hand, the $P-\Td$ relation is more complicated; it is a linear correlation at low $\Td$ but turns into an anti-correlation when $\Td$ reaches a certain high value. Next, we compute the polarization fraction on a pixel-by-pixel with B-fields in the plane of the sky using the DustPOL code based on RAT, incorporate the depolarization effect by B-field tangling using $\S$, and compare the realistic polarization model with observations of Musca and OMC-1. For Musca with well-ordered B-fields, our numerical model reproduces the decline of $P$ toward the filament spine (aka. polarization hole), having high $\NHt$ and low $\Td$, indicating the loss of grain alignment efficiency due to RAT-A. For OMC-1, with stronger B-field variations and higher $\Td$, our model can reproduce the observed $P-\Td$ and $P-N(\rm H_{2})$ relations only if the depolarization effect resulting from B-field tangling and RAT-D effect are taken into account. We have mapped the magnetic field ($B$-field) for a region of about 30 pc around the centre of our Galaxy, which encompasses the circumnuclear disk (CND), the minispiral, and the 20 km s$^{-1}$ and 50 km s$^{-1}$ molecular clouds, using thermal dust polarization observations obtained from SOFIA/HAWC+ and JCMT/SCUPOL. We decompose the spectra of $^{12}$CO ($J\!=\!3\!\rightarrow\!2$) transition from this region into individual cloud components and find the polarization observed at different wavelengths might be tracing completely different layers of dust along the line of sight. We use modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi methods to measure the strength of $B$-field projected in the plane of the sky ($B_{{}_{\mathrm{POS}}}$). The mean $B_{{}_{\mathrm{POS}}}$ of the CND and the minispiral, probed at 53 $\mu$m is of the order of $\sim\!2$ mG. $B_{{}_{\mathrm{POS}}}\!\!\!<\!1$ mG close to the Galactic Centre, in the region of the ionized mini-cavity within the CND, and increases outwards. However, the longer wavelength polarization at 216 $\mu$m appears to come from a dust layer that is cooler and behind the CND and has a stronger $B$-field of about 7 mG. The $B$-field strength is lowest along the Eastern Arm of the minispiral, which is also the only region with Alfv\'en Mach number, $\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{A}}>1$ and mass-to-flux ratio, $\lambda\!\gtrsim\!1$. Such an observed weak $B$-field could be a result of the low resolution of the observation, where the tangled $B$-fields due to the strong turbulence in the high density clumps of the CND are lost within the beam size of the observation., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, Accepted for Publication in MNRAS

Randomly initialized dense networks contain subnetworks that achieve high accuracy without weight learning -- strong lottery tickets (SLTs). Recently, Gadhikar et al. (2023) demonstrated that SLTs can also be found within a randomly pruned source network, thus reducing the SLT search space. However, this limits the search to SLTs that are even sparser than the source, leading to worse accuracy due to unintentionally high sparsity. This paper proposes a method that reduces the SLT search space by an arbitrary ratio independent of the desired SLT sparsity. A random subset of the initial weights is excluded from the search space by freezing it -- i.e., by either permanently pruning them or locking them as a fixed part of the SLT. In addition to reducing search space, the proposed random freezing can also provide the benefit of reducing the model size for inference. Furthermore, experimental results show that the proposed method finds SLTs with better accuracy-to-model size trade-off than the SLTs obtained from dense or randomly pruned source networks. We present the results of the single-dish observations using the Korean VLBI Network to search for anomalous microwave emission (AME) in nearby galaxies. The targets were selected from MApping the dense moLecular gAs in the sTrongest stAr-formiNg Galaxies (MALATANG), a legacy survey project of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The MALATANG galaxies are good representatives of local galaxies with enhanced nuclear activity associated with star formation and/or AGN, providing IR-bright galaxy samples; thus, they are good candidates for AME hosts. Combining with the ancillary data, we investigated the radio-IR spectral energy distribution (SED), while searching for the AME signals in five galaxies. The AME in NGC 2903 was well detected at a significant confidence level, whereas that in NGC 2146 and M82 was marginal. NGC 1068 and Arp 299 indicated no significant hints, and we provided the upper limits for the AME. The best-fit SED exhibited local peaks of the AME components at higher frequencies and with stronger peak fluxes than those in the previous studies. This suggested the origin of AME being denser environments such as molecular clouds or photodissociation regions rather than warm neutral/ionized medium as commonly suggested by previous studies. Further, our AME-detected targets were observed to exhibit higher specific star-formation rates than the other extragalactic AME hosts. Furthermore, AME favored starburst galaxies among our sample rather than AGN hosts. We report 850 $\mu$m continuum polarization observations toward the filamentary high-mass star-forming region NGC 2264, taken as part of the B-fields In STar forming Regions Observations (BISTRO) large program on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). These data reveal a well-structured non-uniform magnetic field in the NGC 2264C and 2264D regions with a prevailing orientation around 30 deg from north to east. Field strengths estimates and a virial analysis for the major clumps indicate that NGC 2264C is globally dominated by gravity while in 2264D magnetic, gravitational, and kinetic energies are roughly balanced. We present an analysis scheme that utilizes the locally resolved magnetic field structures, together with the locally measured gravitational vector field and the extracted filamentary network. From this, we infer statistical trends showing that this network consists of two main groups of filaments oriented approximately perpendicular to one another. Additionally, gravity shows one dominating converging direction that is roughly perpendicular to one of the filament orientations, which is suggestive of mass accretion along this direction. Beyond these statistical trends, we identify two types of filaments. The type-I filament is perpendicular to the magnetic field with local gravity transitioning from parallel to perpendicular to the magnetic field from the outside to the filament ridge. The type-II filament is parallel to the magnetic field and local gravity. Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) has revolutionized the field of dust polarization in protoplanetary disks across multiple wavelengths. Previous observations and empirical modeling suggested multiple mechanisms of dust polarization toward HL Tau, including grain alignment and dust scattering. However, a detailed modeling of dust polarization based on grain alignment physics is not yet available. Here, using our updated POLARIS code, we perform numerical modeling of dust polarization arising from both grain alignment by Magnetically Enhanced Radiative Torque (MRAT) mechanism and self-scattering to reproduce the HL Tau polarization observed at three wavelengths 0.87, 1.3, and 3.1$\,$mm. Our modeling results show that the observed multi-wavelength polarization could be reproduced only when large grains contain embedded iron inclusions and those with slow internal relaxation must have wrong internal alignment (i.e., the grain's major axis parallel to its angular momentum). The abundance of iron embedded inside grains in the form of clusters is constrained to be $\gtrsim 16$%, and the number of iron atoms per cluster is $N_{\rm cl} \sim 9\times10^2$. Maximum grain sizes probed at wavelengths $\lambda$ = 0.87, 1.3, and 3.1$\,$mm are constrained at $\sim$ 60, 80, and 90$\,\mu$m, respectively., Comment: Published in ApJ

The unique biosignature of life on Earth is the homochirality of organic compounds such as amino acids, proteins, and sugars. High-energy spin-polarized (spin-up or spin-down) electrons (SPEs) from the $\beta$ decay of radioactive nuclei were proposed as a source of symmetry breaking, leading to homochirality; however, their exact role is much debated. Here we propose magnetically aligned dust grains as a new source of SPEs due to photoemission of electrons having aligned spins by the Barnett effect. For the interstellar UV radiation field of strength $G_{\rm UV}$, we found that the SPE emission rate is $\Gamma_{\rm pe}^{\rm SPE}\sim 10^{-14}G_{\rm UV}$ electrons per second per H, the fraction of spin-polarized to total photoelectrons is $\sim 10\%$, and the SPE yield (photoelectron number per UV photon) can reach $\sim 1\%$, using the modern theory of grain alignment. SPEs emitted from aligned grains could play an important role in chiral-induced spin selectivity-driven reduction chemistry in the icy grain mantles, producing an enantiomer excess of chiral molecules formed on the grain mantle. Finally, we suggest magnetically aligned grains could directly impact the enantioselectivity through the chiral-induced spin-selective adsorption effect and exchange interaction. We estimated the disalignment of electron spins and depolarization by elastic scattering using the Mott theory and found that these effects are negligible for low-energy SPEs, so that the spins of SPEs remain well aligned during their jurney through dust grains and the gas. The Strong Lottery Ticket Hypothesis (SLTH) demonstrates the existence of high-performing subnetworks within a randomly initialized model, discoverable through pruning a convolutional neural network (CNN) without any weight training. A recent study, called Untrained GNNs Tickets (UGT), expanded SLTH from CNNs to shallow graph neural networks (GNNs). However, discrepancies persist when comparing baseline models with learned dense weights. Additionally, there remains an unexplored area in applying SLTH to deeper GNNs, which, despite delivering improved accuracy with additional layers, suffer from excessive memory requirements. To address these challenges, this work utilizes Multicoated Supermasks (M-Sup), a scalar pruning mask method, and implements it in GNNs by proposing a strategy for setting its pruning thresholds adaptively. In the context of deep GNNs, this research uncovers the existence of untrained recurrent networks, which exhibit performance on par with their trained feed-forward counterparts. This paper also introduces the Multi-Stage Folding and Unshared Masks methods to expand the search space in terms of both architecture and parameters. Through the evaluation of various datasets, including the Open Graph Benchmark (OGB), this work establishes a triple-win scenario for SLTH-based GNNs: by achieving high sparsity, competitive performance, and high memory efficiency with up to 98.7\% reduction, it demonstrates suitability for energy-efficient graph processing., Comment: 9 pages, accepted in the Second Learning on Graphs Conference (LoG 2023)

Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the universe and are thought to play an important role in various astrophysical processes. Polarization of thermal dust emission from dust grains aligned with the magnetic field is widely used to measure the two-dimensional magnetic field projected onto the plane of the sky (POS), but the component along the line of sight (LOS) is not yet reliably constrained with dust polarization. Here, we introduce a new method to infer three-dimensional (3D) magnetic fields using thermal dust polarization and grain alignment physics. We first develop a physical model of thermal dust polarization using the modern grain alignment theory based on the magnetically enhanced radiative torque (MRAT) alignment theory. We then test this model with synthetic observations of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of a filamentary cloud with our updated POLARIS code. Combining the tested physical polarization model with synthetic polarization, we show that the B-field inclination angle can be accurately constrained by the polarization degree from synthetic observations. Compared to the true 3D magnetic fields, our method with grain alignment is more accurate than the previous methods that assume uniform grain alignment. Lifelong learning - an agent's ability to learn throughout its lifetime - is a hallmark of biological learning systems and a central challenge for artificial intelligence (AI). The development of lifelong learning algorithms could lead to a range of novel AI applications, but this will also require the development of appropriate hardware accelerators, particularly if the models are to be deployed on edge platforms, which have strict size, weight, and power constraints. Here, we explore the design of lifelong learning AI accelerators that are intended for deployment in untethered environments. We identify key desirable capabilities for lifelong learning accelerators and highlight metrics to evaluate such accelerators. We then discuss current edge AI accelerators and explore the future design of lifelong learning accelerators, considering the role that different emerging technologies could play.

Magnetic fields are thought to influence the formation and evolution of evolved star envelopes. Thermal dust polarization from magnetically aligned grains is potentially a powerful tool for probing magnetic fields and dust properties in these circumstellar environments. In this paper, we present numerical modeling of thermal dust polarization from the envelope of IK Tau using the magnetically enhanced radiative torque (MRAT) alignment theory implemented in our updated POLARIS code. Due to the strong stellar radiation field, the minimum size required for RAT alignment of silicate grains is $\sim 0.005 - 0.05\,\rm\mu m$. Additionally, ordinary paramagnetic grains can achieve perfect alignment by MRAT in the inner regions of $r < 500\,\rm au$ due to stronger magnetic fields of $B\sim 10$ mG - 1G, producing thermal dust polarization degree of $\sim 10\,\%$. The polarization degree can be enhanced to $\sim 20-40\%$ for grains with embedded iron inclusions. We also find that the magnetic field geometry affects the alignment size and the resulting polarization degree due to the projection effect in the plane-of-sky. We also study the spectrum of polarized thermal dust emission and find the increased polarization degree toward $\lambda > 50\,\rm\mu m$ due to the alignment of small grains by MRAT. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of rotational disruption by RATs (RAT-D) and find the RAT-D effect cause a decrease in the dust polarization fraction. Finally, we compare our numerical results with available polarization data observed by SOFIA/HAWC+ for constraining dust properties, suggesting grains are unlikely to have embedded iron clusters and might have slightly elongated shapes. Thermal dust polarization is a powerful tool to probe magnetic fields ($\textbf{B}$) and grain properties. However, a systematic study of the dependence of dust polarization on grain properties in protostellar environments is not yet available. In this paper, we post-process a non-ideal MHD simulation of a collapsing protostellar core with our updated POLARIS code to study in detail the effects of iron inclusions and grain growth on thermal dust polarization. We found that superparamagnetic (SPM) grains can produce high polarization degree of $p \sim 10-40\%$ beyond $\sim 500$ au from the protostar because of their efficient alignment by magnetically enhanced Radiative Torque mechanism. The magnetic field tangling by turbulence in the envelope causes the decrease in $p$ with increasing emission intensity $I$ as $p\propto I^{\alpha}$ with the slope $\alpha \sim -0.3$. But within 500 au, SPM grains tend to have inefficient internal alignment (IA) and be aligned with $\textbf{B}$ by RATs only, producing lower $p \sim 1\%$ and a steeper slope of $\alpha \sim -0.6$. For paramagnetic (PM) grains, the alignment loss of grains above $1\mu m$ in the inner $\sim 200$ au produces $p << 1\%$ and the polarization hole with $\alpha \sim -0.9$. Grain growth can increase $p$ in the envelope for SPM grains, but cause stronger depolarization for SPM grains in the inner $\sim 500$ au and for PM grains in the entire protostellar core. We present observations of polarized dust emission at 850 $\mu$m from the L43 molecular cloud which sits in the Ophiuchus cloud complex. The data were taken using SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as a part of the BISTRO large program. L43 is a dense ($N_{\rm H_2}\sim 10^{22}$-10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) complex molecular cloud with a submillimetre-bright starless core and two protostellar sources. There appears to be an evolutionary gradient along the isolated filament that L43 is embedded within, with the most evolved source closest to the Sco OB2 association. One of the protostars drives a CO outflow that has created a cavity to the southeast. We see a magnetic field that appears to be aligned with the cavity walls of the outflow, suggesting interaction with the outflow. We also find a magnetic field strength of up to $\sim$160$\pm$30 $\mu$G in the main starless core and up to $\sim$90$\pm$40 $\mu$G in the more diffuse, extended region. These field strengths give magnetically super- and sub-critical values respectively and both are found to be roughly trans-Alfv\'enic. The linear polarization of thermal dust emission provides a powerful tool to probe interstellar and circumstellar magnetic fields, because aspherical grains tend to align themselves with magnetic field lines. While the Radiative Alignment Torque (RAT) mechanism provides a theoretical framework to this phenomenon, some aspects of this alignment mechanism still need to be quantitatively tested. One such aspect is the possibility that the reference alignment direction changes from the magnetic field ("B-RAT") to the radiation field k-vector ("k-RAT") in areas of strong radiation fields. We investigate this transition toward the Orion Bar PDR, using multi-wavelength SOFIA HAWC+ dust polarization observations. The polarization angle maps show that the radiation field direction is on average not the preferred grain alignment axis. We constrain the grain sizes for which the transition from B-RAT to k-RAT occur in the Orion Bar (grains > 0.1 {\mu}m toward the most irradiated locations), and explore the radiatively driven rotational disruption that may take place in the high-radiation environment of the Bar for large grains. While the grains susceptible to rotational disruption should be in supra-thermal rotation and aligned with the magnetic field, k-RAT aligned grains would rotate at thermal velocities. We find that the grain size at which the alignment shifts from B-RAT to k-RAT corresponds to grains too large to survive the rotational disruption. Therefore, we expect a large fraction of grains to be aligned at supra-thermal rotation with the magnetic field, and potentially be subject to rotational disruption depending on their tensile strength.

We present polarization observations of the young supernova remnant (SNR) Cas A using the High-resolution Airborne Wideband Camera-Plus (HAWC+) instrument onboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). The polarization map at 154 microns reveals dust grains with strong polarization fractions (5 - 30 percent), supporting previous measurements made over a smaller region of the remnant at 850 microns. The 154 microns emission and the polarization signal is coincident with a region of cold dust observed in the southeastern shell and in the unshocked central ejecta. The highly polarized far-IR emission implies the grains are large (greater than 0.14 microns) and silicate-dominated. The polarization level varies across the SNR, with an inverse correlation between the polarization degree and the intensity and smaller polarization angle dispersion for brighter SNR emission. Stronger polarization is detected between the bright structures. This may result from a higher collision rate between the gas and dust producing a lower grain alignment efficiency where the gas density is higher. We use the dust emission to provide an estimate of the magnetic field strength in Cas A using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. The high polarization level is direct evidence that grains are highly elongated and strongly aligned with the magnetic field of the SNR. The dust mass from the polarized region is 0.14+-0.04 Msun, a lower limit of the amount of dust present within the ejecta of Cas A. The first interstellar object observed in our solar system, 1I/`Oumuamua, exhibited several peculiar properties, including extreme elongation and non-gravitational acceleration. Bergner and Seligman (hereafter BS23) proposed that evaporation of trapped H$_2$ created by cosmic rays (CRs) can explain the non-gravitational acceleration. However, their modeling of the thermal structure of 1I/`Oumuamua ignored the crucial cooling effect of evaporating H$_2$. By taking into account the cooling by H$_2$ evaporation, we show that the surface temperature of H$_2$-water ice is a factor of 9 lower than the case without evaporative cooling. As a result, the thermal speed of outgassing H$_2$ is decreased by a factor of 3. Our one-dimensional thermal modeling that takes into account evaporative cooling for two chosen values of thermal conductivity of $\kappa=0.01$ and $0.1$ WK$^{-1}$m$^{-1}$ shows that the water ice volume available for H$_2$ sublimation at $T>30$ K would be reduced by a factor of 9 and 5 compared to the results of BS23, not enabling enough hydrogen to propel 1I/`Oumuamua., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure; Accepted for publication, Astrophysical Journal Letters

Network-on-chips (NoCs) are currently a widely used approach for achieving scalability of multi-cores to many-cores, as well as for interconnecting other vital system-on-chip (SoC) components. Each entity in 2D mesh-based NoCs has a router responsible for forwarding packets between the dimensions as well as the entity itself, and it is essentially a 5-port switch. With respect to the routing algorithm, there are important trade-offs between routing performance and the efficiency of overcoming potential deadlocks. Common deadlock avoidance techniques including the turn model usually involve restrictions of certain paths a packet can take at the cost of a higher probability for network congestion. In contrast, deadlock resolution techniques, as well as some avoidance schemes, provide more path flexibility at the expense of hardware complexity, such as by incorporating (or assuming) dedicated buffers. This paper provides a deadlock avoidance algorithm for NoC routers based on output-queues (OQs) or virtual-output queues (VOQs), with a focus on their use on field-programmable gate-arrays (FPGAs). The proposed approach features fewer path restrictions than common techniques, and can be based on existing routing algorithms as a baseline, deadlock-free or not. This requires no modification to the queueing topology, and the required logic is minimal. We present BISTRO Survey 850 {\mu}m dust emission polarisation observations of the L1495A-B10 region of the Taurus molecular cloud, taken at the JCMT. We observe a roughly triangular network of dense filaments. We detect 9 of the dense starless cores embedded within these filaments in polarisation, finding that the plane-of-sky orientation of the core-scale magnetic field lies roughly perpendicular to the filaments in almost all cases. We also find that the large-scale magnetic field orientation measured by Planck is not correlated with any of the core or filament structures, except in the case of the lowest-density core. We propose a scenario for early prestellar evolution that is both an extension to, and consistent with, previous models, introducing an additional evolutionary transitional stage between field-dominated and matter-dominated evolution, observed here for the first time. In this scenario, the cloud collapses first to a sheet-like structure. Uniquely, we appear to be seeing this sheet almost face-on. The sheet fragments into filaments, which in turn form cores. However, the material must reach a certain critical density before the evolution changes from being field-dominated to being matter-dominated. We measure the sheet surface density and the magnetic field strength at that transition for the first time and show consistency with an analytical prediction that had previously gone untested for over 50 years (Mestel 1965)., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures. We study the alignment and rotational disruption of dust grains at the centre of our Galaxy using polarized thermal dust emission observed by SOFIA/HAWC+ and JCMT/SCUPOL at 53, 216, and 850 $\mu$m. We analyzed the relationship between the observed polarization degree with total emission intensity, dust temperature, gas column density, and polarization angle dispersion. Polarization degree from this region follows the predictions of the RAdiative Torque (RAT) alignment theory, except at high temperatures and long wavelengths where we found evidence for the rotational disruption of grains as predicted by the RAdiative Torque Disruption mechanism. The grain alignment and disruption sizes were found to be around 0.1 $\mu$m and 1 $\mu$m, respectively. The maximum polarization degree observed was around $p\sim13$% at 216 $\mu$m and comes from a region of high dust temperature, low column density, and ordered magnetic field. Magnetically Enhanced RAT alignment (MRAT) was found to be important for grain alignment due to the presence of a strong magnetic field and can induce perfect alignment even when grains contain small iron clusters. We estimated the mass fraction of aligned grains using a parametric model for the fraction of the grains at high-$J$ attractors and found it to correlate weakly with the observed polarization degree. We observe a change in the polarization ratio, from $p_{216\mu m}/p_{850\mu m}<1$ to $p_{216\mu m}/p_{850\mu m}>1$ at $T_{\rm d}\gtrsim35$ K, which suggests a change in the grain model from a composite to a separate population of carbon and silicate grains as implied by previous numerical modeling., Comment: 20 pages, 22 figures. Rapidly spinning magnetic grains can acquire large magnetic dipole moments due to the Barnett effect. Here we study the new effect of Barnett magnetic dipole-dipole interaction on grain-grain collisions and grain growth, assuming grains spun up by radiative torques. We find that the collision rate between grains having embedded iron inclusions can be significantly enhanced due to Barnett magnetic dipole-dipole interaction when grains rotate suprathermally by radiative torques. We discuss the implications of enhanced collision rate for grain growth and destruction in the circumstellar envelope of evolved stars, photodissociation regions, and protostellar environments. We report the first measurement of polarized thermal dust emission toward the entire early and massive Infrared Dark Cloud G11.11$-$0.12 taken by the polarimeter SOFIA/HAWC+ at 214 $\mu m$ wavelength. Magnetic fields (B-fields) obtained from the polarized emission tend to be perpendicular to the filament's spine. We produce a map of B-field strengths for the center region of the filament. The strengths vary in the range of 100-600 $\mu\rm{G}$ and are strongest along the filament's spine. The central region is sub-Alfv\'enic and mostly sub-critical meaning that B-fields dominate over turbulence and are strong enough to resist gravitational collapse. The alignment and properties of dust grains are studied in the filament using the RAdiative Torque (RAT) theory. We find the decrease of polarization degree $P$ with emission intensity $I$, i.e., depolarization effect, of the form $P\propto I^{-\alpha}$ with $\alpha\sim$0.8-0.9, implying a significant loss of grain alignment in the filament's spine. The depolarization can be explained by the decrease in RAT alignment efficiency toward the denser regions with lower dust temperature, and cannot be explained by the B-field tangling. We study the effect of the enhanced magnetic relaxation by embedded iron inclusions on RAT alignment and find that the high polarization fraction $P\sim$20-30\% in the outer layer of the filament is potential evidence for the enhanced RAT alignment by magnetic relaxation. This is the first time this effect is evaluated in a filament. Based on the polarization fraction and RAT alignment theory, we find evidence for grain growth in the filament.

We study the internal and external alignment of carbonaceous grains, including graphite and hydrogenated amorphous carbon (HAC), in the interstellar medium (ISM) within the RAdiative Torque (RAT) paradigm. For internal alignment (IA), we find that HAC grains having nuclear paramagnetism due to hydrogen protons can have efficient nuclear relaxation, whereas both HAC and graphite grains can have efficient inelastic relaxation for grains aligned both at low$-J$ and high$-J$ attractors. For external alignment, HAC and graphite grains can align with the radiation direction ($k$-RAT) at low$-J$ attractors but cannot have stable alignment at high$-J$ attractors due to the suppression of radiative precession. HAC also has slow Larmor precession compared to the randomization by gas collisions and cannot be aligned with the magnetic field ($B$-RAT). Small HAC grains of $a<0.05\mu$m drifting through the diffuse ISM can be weakly aligned along the induced electric field ($E$-RAT) at high$-J$ attractors due to its fast precession. Paramagnetic relaxation by nuclear magnetism is found inefficient for HAC grains due to the rapid suppression of nuclear susceptibility when grains rotate at high$-J$ attractors. We then study the alignment of carbon dust in the envelope of a typical C-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch star, IRC+10216. We find that grains aligned at low$-J$ attractors can occur via $k$-RAT with the wrong IA in the inner region but via $B$-RAT in the outermost region. However, grains aligned at high$-J$ attractors have the right IA alignment via $k$-RAT due to efficient inelastic relaxation. The polarization pattern observed toward IRC+10216 by SOFIA/HAWC+ can reproduced when only grains at low$-J$ attractors are present due to removal of grains at high$-J$ attractors by the RAT disruption., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures

We study the HII regions associated with the NGC 6334 molecular cloud observed in the sub-millimeter and taken as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) Survey. In particular, we investigate the polarization patterns and magnetic field morphologies associated with these HII regions. Through polarization pattern and pressure calculation analyses, several of these bubbles indicate that the gas and magnetic field lines have been pushed away from the bubble, toward an almost tangential (to the bubble) magnetic field morphology. In the densest part of NGC 6334, where the magnetic field morphology is similar to an hourglass, the polarization observations do not exhibit observable impact from HII regions. We detect two nested radial polarization patterns in a bubble to the south of NGC 6334 that correspond to the previously observed bipolar structure in this bubble. Finally, using the results of this study, we present steps (incorporating computer vision; circular Hough Transform) that can be used in future studies to identify bubbles that have physically impacted magnetic field lines., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)
