Abstract

Legal Metrology’s requirements can be transferred into the IT security domain applying a generic set of standardized rules provided by the Common Criteria (ISO/IEC 15408). We will outline the transfer and cross validation of such an approach. As an example serves the integration of Legal Metrology’s requirements into a recently developed Common Criteria based Protection Profile for a Smart Meter Gateway designed under the leadership of the Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security. The requirements on utility meters laid down in the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) are incorporated. A verification approach to check for meeting Legal Metrology’s requirements by their interpretation through Common Criteria’s generic requirements is also presented.

Abstract

We consider the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with a broad initial probability distribution (Levy distribution), which exhibits so-called non-spectral modes. The relaxation of such modes differs from those determined from the parameters of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. The first non-spectral mode is shown to govern the relaxation process and allows for estimation of the initial distribution's Levy index. A method based on continuous wavelet transformation is proposed to extract both (spectral and non-spectral) relaxation rates from a stochastic data sample., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Aging increases the risk to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Cardiovascular diseases might accelerate this process. Our study aimed at investigating the impact of heart failure on brain connectivity using functional magnetic resonance imaging at resting state. Here we show brain connectivity alterations related to heart failure and cognitive performance. Heart failure decreases brain connectivity in the precuneus. Precuneus dysconnectivity was associated with biomarkers of heart failure—left ventricular ejection fraction and N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide—and cognitive performance, predominantly executive function. Meta-analytical data-mining approaches—conducted in the BrainMap and Neurosynth databases—revealed that social and executive cognitive functions are mainly associated with those neural networks. Remarkably, the precuneus, as identified in our study in a mid-life cohort, represents one central functional hub affected by Alzheimer’s disease. A long-term follow-up investigation in our cohort after approximately nine years revealed more severe cognitive impairment in the group with heart failure than controls, where social cognition was the cognitive domain mainly affected, and not memory such as in Alzheimer’s disease. In sum, our results indicate consistently an association between heart failure and decoupling of the precuneus from other brain regions being associated with social and executive functions. Further longitudinal studies are warranted elucidating etiopathological mechanisms.

Abstract

Virtual Reality (VR) is progressively adopted at different stages of design and product development. Consequently, evolving interaction requirements in engineering design and development for VR are essential for technology adoption. One of these requirements is real-time positional tracking. This paper aims to present an experimental design of a new real-time positional tracking device (tracker), that is more compact than the existing solution, while addressing factors such as wearability and connectivity. We compare the simulation of the proposed device and the existing solution, discuss the results, and the limitations. The new experimental shape of the device is tailored towards research, allowing the engineering designer to take advantage of a new tracker alternative in new ways, and opens the door to new VR applications in research and product development.

Abstract

The compositional dependence of the yield strength σ$_{y}$ has been studied for a series of polycrystalline (AuNiPdPt)$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$ alloys by means of compression tests. σ$_{y}$ is found to decrease linearly with increasing Cu concentration. This behaviour is in contradiction to the generalised theory for solid solution strengthening in concentrated solid solutions provided by Varvenne et al. [1]. A breakdown of the scaling behaviour is found as σy should be non-linear and slightly increasing when modifying the composition from AuNiPdPt to AuCuNiPdPt.

Abstract

We propose an optimized method to demagnetize ferromagnetic specimen taking into account its particularities. Based on a static algebraic model for magnetic hysteresis we calculated a demagnetization function which considers the reversible and irreversible processes during the passage through the hysteretic loops into the demagnetized state. Index Terms--Barkhausen noise, Bloch wall, demagnetization, hysteretic model, magnetically shielded room, SQUID.

Abstract

Graphene offers a large potential to downscale antennas to the micrometer scale, due to its special dispersion relation and its ability to support plasmons in the THz frequency range. For an adequate performance of the antenna, graphene material quality is crucial. A high chemical potential, as well as a high relaxation time are needed. Fabrication and processing, as well as the material environment are very critical to achieve a high graphene quality and a good emissivity of the antenna. We demonstrate the simulation, fabrication and analysis of a graphene based plasmonic antenna structure acting as an active THz emission device., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)
