Each food product has distinct characteristics. Selecting appropriate storage conditions for each product is essential to minimize quality degradation and extend its shelf life. This study focused on understanding how different packaging materials and storage temperatures influence the quality, longevity of spiced Sergestid shrimp, and on determining the optimal conditions to inhibit microbial activity, prevent moisture absorption, while still preserving maximum astaxanthin content. Polyethylene bags with an aluminum film (Al/PE), PET bottles (polyethylene terephthalate), paper bags with a polyethylene film (Paper/PE), and glass bottles were used for packaging. Storage was carried out at four different temperatures: 5; 15; 25; 35°C. The moisture content, astaxanthin content, and total aerobic microorganisms were also determined at least once every 3 to 7 days and continuously monitored for 77 days. The findings indicated that PET bottles effectively prevent moisture absorption and protect astaxanthin from degradation over time. However, transparent packaging, such as glass bottles that allow direct exposure of the product to light, negatively affects the stability of astaxanthin. The optimal temperature range for storing this product was identified as being between 5 and 15°C, which helped stabilize moisture content (5.55-6.34%) and inhibit the growth of aerobic microorganisms (2.42-2.58 LogCFU/g). These findings provide crucial insights for the seafood industry, particularly in choosing the right packaging materials and storage conditions to enhance the shelf life and maintain the quality of spiced Sergestid shrimp products. This study contributes to the existing knowledge and aids stakeholders in making informed decisions regarding product packaging and storage strategies.

In this study, a novel superabsorbent polymer tapioca starch-g-poly(acrylic acid-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid)/ammonium polyphosphate (TS-g-AA-AMPS/APP) was synthesized based on the graft copolymerization of tapioca starch (TS) with acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) via free radical polymerization in aqueous solution with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) additive added for study. The synthesized superabsorbent polymer material was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Research investigating the material synthesis conditions to absorbance in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution has also been studied. Under optimal synthesis conditions, the absorbance in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution were 416 g g ^−1 and 61 g g ^−1 , respectively, for the sample with 3 wt% APP content. The introduction of APP units has improved the absorption properties of the material such as the water retention capacity reaching 55.25% in 10 h at 60 °C. TS-AA-AMPS/APP exhibits reversible swelling ability, with the swelling level not being reduced compared to the initial after 5 swelling-drying cycles at 60 °C, and water absorption reaches swelling equilibrium after about 270 min. Additionally, TGA thermogravimetric analysis results showed an improvement in the thermal stability of TS-AA-AMPS/APP compared to the pure polymer. These results show that the TS-AA-AMPS/APP polymer with excellent swelling properties, low production cost, and environmentally friendly has the potential for practical applications in agriculture, gardening, and water retention materials.

Simple Summary: Four Vietnamese breeding lines (2 Japonica and 2 Indica) were directly compared in field settings for phenotypic traits associated with yield. These Vietnamese rice genomes were newly de novo assembled and annotated, and a phylogenetic analysis of the phytochrome C (phyC) confirmed the positioning and diversity between the four varieties. The four lines showed enough phenotypic and genetic differences to be used as parental lines for climate-adaptation breeding programs. This study begins by examining phenotypic variations in field growth among four parental Vietnamese rice lines, consisting of two Indica (PD211/GL37) and two Japonica (J23/SRA2-1) cultivars, which differ in life-cycle durations. Their phenotypic observations revealed both similarities and differences in growth patterns and field responses, setting the stage for further genomic investigation. We then focused on the sequencing and de novo genome assembly of these lines using high-coverage Illumina sequencing and achieving pseudochromosome assemblies ranging between 379 Mbp and 384 Mbp. The assemblies were further enhanced by annotation processes, designating between 44,427 and 48,704 gene models/genome. A comparative genomic analysis revealed that the Japonica varieties (J23/SRA2-1) exhibited more genetic similarity than the Indica varieties (PD211/GL37). From this, a phylogenetic analysis on the phytochrome C (phyC) gene distinctly positions the Indica and Japonica lines within their respective clades, affirming their genetic diversity and lineage accuracy. These genomic resources will pave the way for identifying quantitative trait loci (QTLs) critical for developing rice cultivars with shorter life cycles, thus enhancing resilience to adverse climatic impacts in Vietnam.
