4. A One Year Prospective Study of Neurogenic Stuttering Following Stroke: Incidence and Co-Occurring Disorders

Abstract

In this prospective study, data on incidence, stuttering characteristics, co-occurring speech disorders, and recovery of neurogenic stuttering in a large sample of stroke participants were assessed. Following stroke onset, 17 of 319 participants (5.3%; 95% CI, 3.2-8.3) met the criteria for neurogenic stuttering. Stuttering persisted in at least 2.5% (95% CI, 1.1-4.7) for more than six months following the stroke. Participants with comorbid aphasia presented with a significantly higher frequency of stuttering compared to the group without aphasia (U = 13.00, p[subscript (1-tailed)] = 0.02) but no difference was found for participants with co-occurring dysarthria and/or cognitive problems. Participants with neurogenic stuttering did not differ from those without stuttering in terms of stroke risk factors or stroke etiologic subtypes. Although the incidence of stuttering following stroke is lower than that for aphasia or dysarthria, these results show that clinicians should take neurogenic stuttering into account when assessing stroke participants' speech and language. Learning outcomes: Readers will be able to: (1) understand the need for systematic, prospective studies in neurogenic stuttering; (2) know the incidence and prevalence of neurogenic stuttering following stroke; and (3) know how neurogenic stuttering co-occurs with other speech-language disorders following stroke. Abstract

International audience; Aims. This study is carried out in the context of data processing of the solar coronagraph ASPIICS of the future formation-flying mission Proba-3, which is expected to provide images of the corona very close to the limb. There will be a transition zone of the order of 100 arcsec close to the limb, where the telescope aperture suffers a strong vignetting by the external occulter (a disc of 1.42 m at 144 m). The instrument response in this region will vary rapidly both in shape and in integrated intensity, the latter being particular to the external occultation. The aim of this paper is to propose a technique to recover as much as possible of the image of the corona very close to the limb in the vignetting zone.Methods. The object image relationship in this zone is not defined by the usual convolution but by the more general Fredholm integral of the first kind. Theoretical aspects of the problem are detailed in the context of a matrix formalism for the inversion of the Fredholm integral, formalism that we maintain up to the end of the numerical simulations, which is specific to the present work. The iterative Richardson-Lucy algorithm, specially written for the non-constant integrated intensity of the responses is used here for reconstruction. A study of the effect of noise on a photodetected image is made.Results. An important part of the work consisted in calculating the elements of the transfer matrix between the object and the image for a simulation on a small region of size 100 × 100 arcsec sampled over 128 × 128 pixels. This is obtained propagating the light through the system using a previously published approach. On a toy object, the reconstruction is excellent down to about 60 arcsec from the limb, corresponding to a vignetting of 50%. The drawback is that the recovery of a N × N object requires the handling of a N2 × N2 matrix, i.e. a 16384 × 16384 transfer matrix here. However, taking into account radial symmetries of the experiment, we propose the use of a transformation from Cartesian to polar coordinates which allows to apply the same procedure all around the sun as for a small region.

Abstract

In adults and school-aged children, phonological aspects of reading seem to be sustained by left dorsal regions, while ventral regions seem to be involved in orthographic word recognition. Yet, given that the brain reorganises during reading acquisition, it is unknown when and how these reading routes emerge and whether neural deficits in dyslexia predate reading onset. Using diffusion MRI in 36 pre-readers with a family risk for dyslexia (FRD+) and 35 well matched pre-readers without a family risk (FRD−), our results show that phonological predictors of reading are sustained bilaterally by both ventral and dorsal tracts. This suggests that a dorsal and left-hemispheric specialisation for phonological aspects of reading, as observed in adults, is presumably gradually formed throughout reading development. Second, our results indicate that FRD+ pre-readers display mainly white matter differences in left ventral tracts. This suggests that atypical white matter organisation previously found in dyslexic adults may be causal rather than resulting from a lifetime of reading difficulties, and that the location of such a deficit may vary throughout development. While this study forms an important starting point, longitudinal follow-up of these children will allow further investigation of the dynamics between emerging literacy development and white matter connections.

43. Doppler ambiguity resolution using staggered PRF with a new chirp sweep-rate estimation algorithm

Abstract

The use of a quadratic staggered pulse-repetition-frequency (PRF) law in a surveillance radar, transposes unambiguous Doppler frequency estimation to a chirp sweep-rate estimation problem. An algorithm is proposed which achieves this estimation task efficiently. The method relies on a nonlinear recurrent equation which permits the construction of a pseudo forward-backward prediction matrix. The sweep rate is then estimated using the classical minimum-norm method and the new Doppler ambiguity domain is fixed by a sampling parameter. Performances are finally derived by computer simulations.
