Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive functional imaging technique for pre-surgical mapping. However, movement-related MEG functional mapping of primary motor cortex (M1) has been challenging in presurgical patients with brain lesions and sensorimotor dysfunction due to the large numbers of trials needed to obtain adequate signal to noise. Moreover, it is not fully understood how effective the brain communication is with the muscles at frequencies above the movement frequency and its harmonics. We developed a novel Electromyography (EMG)-projected MEG source imaging technique for localizing early-stage (-100 to 0 ms) M1 activity during ~l min recordings of left and right self-paced finger movements (~1 Hz). High-resolution MEG source images were obtained by projecting M1 activity towards the skin EMG signal without trial averaging. We studied delta (1-4 Hz), theta (4-7 Hz), alpha (8-12 Hz), beta (15-30 Hz), gamma (30-90 Hz), and upper-gamma (60-90 Hz) bands in 13 healthy participants (26 datasets) and three presurgical patients with sensorimotor dysfunction. In healthy participants, EMG-projected MEG accurately localized M1 with high accuracy in delta (100.0%), theta (100.0%), and beta (76.9%) bands, but not alpha (34.6%) or gamma/upper-gamma (0.0%) bands. Except for delta, all other frequency bands were above the movement frequency and its harmonics. In three presurgical patients, M1 activity in the affected hemisphere was also accurately localized, despite highly irregular EMG movement patterns in one patient. Altogether, our EMG-projected MEG imaging approach is highly accurate and feasible for M1 mapping in presurgical patients. The results also provide insight into movement-related brain-muscle coupling above the movement frequency and its harmonics.

Impaired visual target detection is a common finding in schizophrenia that is linked to poor functional outcomes. However, the neural mechanisms that contribute to this deficit remain unclear. Recent research in healthy samples has identified relationships between the phase of pre-stimulus electroencephalographic (EEG) activity in the alpha band (8-12 Hz) or theta band (4-7 Hz) and the likelihood of visual target detection with and without attentional cueing, but these effects have not yet been explored in schizophrenia. We performed a study to investigate such effects in schizophrenia (n = 19) and healthy participants (n = 14), using a visual target detection task with attentional cues. We found significant relationships between pre-stimulus EEG phase properties and visual target detection in both groups, but also clear differences in the effects as a function of frequency, group, and attentional cueing. Alpha-band phase effects were relatively uniform across groups and conditions. By contrast, theta-band phase effects showed differences by group and attentional condition which could be consistent with attentional hyperfocusing in the schizophrenia group. Frequent listening to unfamiliar music excerpts forms functional connectivity in the brain as music becomes familiar and memorable. However, where these connections spectrally arise in the cerebral cortex during music familiarization has yet to be determined. This study investigates electrophysiological changes in phase-based functional connectivity recorded with electroencephalography (EEG) from twenty participants’ brains during thrice passive listening to initially unknown classical music excerpts. Functional connectivity is evaluated based on measuring phase synchronization between all pairwise combinations of EEG electrodes across all repetitions via repeated measures ANOVA and between every two repetitions of listening to unknown music with the weighted phase lag index (WPLI) method in different frequency bands. The results indicate an increased phase synchronization during gradual short-term familiarization between the right frontal and the right parietal areas in the theta and alpha bands. In addition, the increased phase synchronization is discovered between the right temporal areas and the right parietal areas at the theta band during gradual music familiarization. Overall, this study explores the short-term music familiarization effects on neural responses by revealing that repetitions form phasic coupling in the theta and alpha bands in the right hemisphere during passive listening. The ability to plan and carry out goal-directed behavior presupposes knowledge about the contingencies between movements and their effects. Ideomotor accounts of action control assume that agents integrate action-effect contingencies by creating action-effect bindings, which associate movement patterns with their sensory consequences. However, the neurophysiological underpinnings of action-effect binding are not yet well understood. Given that theta band activity has been linked to information integration, we thus studied action-effect integration in an electrophysiological study with N = 31 healthy individuals with a strong focus on theta band activity. We examined how information between functional neuroanatomical structures is exchanged to enable action planning. We show that theta band activity in a network encompassing the insular cortex (IC), the anterior temporal lobe (ATL), and the inferior frontal cortex (IFC) supports the establishment of action-effect bindings. All regions revealed bi-directional effective connectivities, indicating information transfer between these regions. The IC and ATL create a loop for information integration and the conceptual abstraction of it. The involvement of anterior regions of the IFC, particularly during the acquisition phase of the action-effect, likely reflects episodic control mechanisms in which a past event defines a “template” of what action-effect is to be expected. Taken together, the current findings connect well with major cognitive concepts. Our study suggests a functional relevance of theta band activity in an IC-ATL-IFC network, which in turn implies that basic ideomotor action-effect integration is implemented through theta band activity and effective connectivities between temporo-frontal structures.

Mental workload can be assessed using electrophysiological measures of brain activity, such as electroencephalography (EEG). EEG signals reveal cortical electrical activity. This cortical activity was recorded using specialized headsets. The focus of this research was to study cognitive performance (CP) in four pilots during simulated suborbital flights under nominal day and night profiles and under contingency day and night profiles. A 14-channel EMOTIV EEG headset measured the participants' brain activity while they flew simulated flights in a Suborbital Spaceflight Simulator (SSFS). Several sessions of EEG data were recorded from each subject, and feature extraction was applied. Data revealed that real-time pilot CP can be decoded from the EEG signals. People tend to perceive the same information differently depending on whether it is expressed in an individual or a group frame. It has also been found that the individual (vs. group) frame of expression tends to lead to more charitable giving and greater tolerance of wealth inequality. However, little is known about whether the same resource allocation in social interactions elicits distinct responses depending on proposer type. Using the second-party punishment task, this study examined whether the same allocation from different proposers (individual vs. group) leads to differences in recipient behavior and the neural mechanisms. Behavioral results showed that reaction times were longer in the unfair (vs. fair) condition, and this difference was more pronounced when the proposer was the individual (vs. group). Neural results showed that proposer type (individual vs. group) influenced early automatic processing (indicated by AN1, P2, and central alpha band), middle processing (indicated by MFN and right frontal theta band), and late elaborative processing (indicated by P3 and parietal alpha band) of fairness in resource allocation. These results revealed more attentional resources were captured by the group proposer in the early stage of fairness processing, and more cognitive resources were consumed by processing group-proposed unfair allocations in the late stage, possibly because group proposers are less identifiable than individual proposers. The findings provide behavioral and neural evidence for the effects of “individual/group” framing leading to cognitive differences. They also deliver insights into social governance issues, such as punishing individual and/or group violations.

Sense of personal perspective is crucial for understanding in attentional mechanisms of the perception in "self" or "other's" body. In a hand laterality judgment (HLJ) task, perception of perspective can be assessed by arranging angular orientations and depths of images. A total of 11 healthy, right-handed participants (8 females, mean age: 38.36 years, education: 14 years) were included in the study. The purpose of this study was to investigate behavioural and cortical responses in low-frequency cortical rhythms during a HLJ task. A total of 80-visual hand stimuli were presented through the experiment. Hand visuals were categorized in the way of side (right vs. left) and perspective (1st vs. 3rd personal perspective). Both behavioural outcomes and brain oscillatory characteristics (i.e., frequency and amplitude) of the Electroencephalography were analysed. All reaction time and incorrect answers for 3rd person perspective were higher than the ones for 1st person perspective. Location effect was statistically significant in event-related theta responses confirming the dominant activity of theta frequency in spatial memory tasks on parietal and occipital areas. In addition, we found there were increasing in delta power and phase in hand visuals with 1st person perspective and increasing theta phase in hand visuals with 3rd person perspective (p < 0.05). Accordingly, a clear dissociation in the perception of perspectives in low-frequency bands was revealed. These different cortical strategy in the perception of hand visual with and without perspectives may be interpreted as delta activity may be related in self-body perception, whereas theta activity may be related in allocentric perception. How emotion and cognition interact is still a matter of debate. Investigation of this interaction in terms of the brain oscillatory dynamics appears to be an essential approach. To investigate this topic, we designed two separate three-stimulus oddball tasks, including emotional stimuli with different valences. Twenty healthy young subjects were included in the study. They completed two tasks, namely: the positive emotional oddball task and the negative emotional oddball task. Each task included the target, non-target, and distractor stimuli. Positive and negative pictures were the target stimuli in the positive and negative emotional oddball task. We asked participants to determine the number of target stimuli in each task. During sessions, EEGs were recorded with 32 electrodes. We found that (negative) target stimuli elicit higher delta (1–3.5 Hz) and theta (4–7 Hz) power responses but not the phase-locking responses compared to (positive) distractor stimuli during the negative oddball task. On the other hand, the same effect was not seen during the positive emotional oddball task. Here, we showed that the valence dimension interacted with the target status. Finally, we summarized our results that the presence of negative distractors attenuated the target effect of the positive stimuli due to the negative bias. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BackgroundNoninvasive transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) research has been plagued with inconsistent effects. Recent work has suggested neuroanatomical and neurophysiological variability may alter tES efficacy. However, direct evidence is limited.ObjectiveWe have previously replicated effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on improving multitasking ability in young adults. Here, we attempt to assess whether these stimulation parameters have comparable effects in older adults (aged 60-80 years), which is a population known to have greater variability in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. It is hypothesized that this variability in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology will be predictive of tACS efficacy.MethodsWe conducted a pre-registered study where tACS was applied above the prefrontal cortex (between electrodes F3-F4) while participants were engaged in multitasking. Participants were randomized to receive either 6-Hz (theta) tACS for 26.67 min daily for three days (80 min total; Long Exposure Theta group), 6-Hz tACS for 5.33 min daily (16-min total; Short Exposure Theta group), or 1-Hz tACS for 26.67 min (80 min total; Control group). To account for neuroanatomy, magnetic resonance imaging data was used to form individualized models of the tACS-induced electric field (EF) within the brain. To account for neurophysiology, electroencephalography data was used to identify individual peak theta frequency.ResultsResults indicated that only in the Long Theta group, performance change was correlated with modeled EF and peak theta frequency. Together, modeled EF and peak theta frequency accounted for 54%-65% of the variance in tACS-related performance improvements, which sustained for a month.ConclusionThese results demonstrate the importance of individual differences in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology in tACS research and help account for inconsistent effects across studies.

Previous researches state vision as a vital source of information for movement control and more precisely for accurate hand movement. Further, fine bimanual motor activity may be associated with various oscillatory activities within distinct brain areas and inter-hemispheric interactions. However, neural coordination among the distinct brain areas responsible to enhance motor accuracy is still not adequate. In the current study, we investigated task-dependent modulation by simultaneously measuring high time resolution electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyogram (EMG) and force along with bi-manual and unimanual motor tasks. The errors were controlled using visual feedback. To complete the unimanual tasks, the participant was asked to grip the strain gauge using the index finger and thumb of the right hand thereby exerting force on the connected visual feedback system. Whereas the bi-manual task involved finger abduction of the left index finger in two contractions along with visual feedback system and at the same time the right hand gripped using definite force on two conditions that whether visual feedback existed or not for the right hand. Primarily, the existence of visual feedback for the right hand significantly decreased brain network global and local efficiency in theta and alpha bands when compared with the elimination of visual feedback using twenty participants. Brain network activity in theta and alpha bands coordinates to facilitate fine hand movement. The findings may provide new neurological insight on virtual reality auxiliary equipment and participants with neurological disorders that cause movement errors requiring accurate motor training. Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a form of experience-dependent synaptic plasticity mediated by glutamatergic transmission at N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs). Impaired neuroplasticity has been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, possibly due to underlying NMDAR hypofunction. Analogous to the high frequency electrical stimulation used to induce LTP in vitro and in vivo in animal models, repeated high frequency presentation of a visual stimulus in humans in vivo has been shown to induce enduring LTP-like neuroplastic changes in electroencephalography (EEG)-based visual evoked potentials (VEPs) elicited by the stimulus. Using this LTP-like visual plasticity paradigm, we previously showed that visual high-frequency stimulation (VHFS) induced sustained changes in VEP amplitudes in healthy controls, but not in patients with schizophrenia. Here, we extend this prior work by re-analyzing the EEG data underlying the VEPs, focusing on neuroplastic changes in stimulus-evoked EEG oscillatory activity following VHFS. EEG data were recorded from 19 patients with schizophrenia and 21 healthy controls during the visual plasticity paradigm. Event-related EEG oscillations (total power, intertrial phase coherence; ITC) elicited by a standard black and white checkerboard stimulus (~0.83 Hz, several 2-min blocks) were assessed before and after exposure to VHFS with the same stimulus (~8.9 Hz, 2 min). A cluster-based permutation testing approach was applied to time-frequency data to examine LTP-like plasticity effects following VHFS. VHFS enhanced theta band total power and ITC in healthy controls but not in patients with schizophrenia. The magnitude and phase synchrony of theta oscillations in response to a visual stimulus were enhanced for at least 22 min following VHFS, a frequency domain manifestation of LTP-like visual cortical plasticity. These theta oscillation changes are deficient in patients with schizophrenia, consistent with hypothesized NMDA receptor dysfunction.

Cue-induced reward-seeking behaviors are regulated by both the affective and cognitive control systems of the brain. This study aimed at investigating how individual differences in affective and cognitive responses to cues predicting food rewards contribute to the regulation of cue-induced eating. We recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) from 59 adults while they viewed emotional and food-related images that preceded the delivery of food rewards (candies) or non-food objects (beads). We measured the amplitude of the late positive potential (LPP) in response to a variety of motivationally relevant images and power in the theta (4-8 Hz) frequency band after candies or beads were dispensed to the participants. We found that individuals with larger LPP responses to food images than to pleasant images (C>P group) ate significantly more during the experiment than those with the opposite response pattern (P>C group, p < 0.001). Furthermore, we found that individuals with higher theta power after dispensation of the candy than of the bead (qCA>qBE) ate significantly more than those with the opposite response pattern (qBE>qCA, p < 0.001). Finally, we found that the crossed P>C and qBE>qCA group ate less (p < 0.001) than did the other three groups formed by crossing the LPP and theta group assignments, who exhibited similar eating behavior on average (p = 0.662). These findings demonstrate that individual differences in both affective and cognitive responses to reward-related cues underlie vulnerability to cue-induced behaviors, underscoring the need for individualized treatments to mitigate maladaptive behaviors.

Recent studies show that the integrity of core perceptual and cognitive functions may be tested in a short time with Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) with low stimulation frequencies, between 1 and 10 Hz. Wearable EEG systems provide unique opportunities to test these brain functions on diverse populations in out-of-the-lab conditions. However, they also pose significant challenges as the number of EEG channels is typically limited, and the recording conditions might induce high noise levels, particularly for low frequencies. Here we tested the performance of Normalized Canonical Correlation Analysis (NCCA), a frequency-normalized version of CCA, to quantify SSVEP from wearable EEG data with stimulation frequencies ranging from 1 to 10 Hz. We validated NCCA on data collected with an 8-channel wearable wireless EEG system based on BioWolf, a compact, ultra-light, ultra-low-power recording platform. The results show that NCCA correctly and rapidly detects SSVEP at the stimulation frequency within a few cycles of stimulation, even at the lowest frequency (4 s recordings are sufficient for a stimulation frequency of 1 Hz), outperforming a state-of-the-art normalized power spectral measure. Neurons within a neuronal network can be grouped by bottom-up and top-down influences using synchrony in neuronal oscillations. This creates the representation of perceptual objects from sensory features. Oscillatory activity can be differentiated into stimulus-phase-locked (evoked) and non-phase-locked (induced). The former is mainly determined by sensory input, the latter by higher-level (cortical) processing. Effects of auditory deprivation on cortical oscillations have been studied in congenitally deaf cats (CDCs) using cochlear implant (CI) stimulation. CI-induced alpha, beta, and gamma activity were compromised in the auditory cortex of CDCs. Furthermore, top-down information flow between secondary and primary auditory areas in hearing cats, conveyed by induced alpha oscillations, was lost in CDCs. Here we used the matching pursuit algorithm to assess components of such oscillatory activity in local field potentials recorded in primary field A1. Additionally to the loss of induced alpha oscillations, we also found a loss of evoked theta activity in CDCs. The loss of theta and alpha activity in CDCs can be directly related to reduced high-frequency (gamma-band) activity due to cross-frequency coupling. Here we quantified such cross-frequency coupling in adult 1) hearing-experienced, acoustically stimulated cats (aHCs), 2) hearing-experienced cats following acute pharmacological deafening and subsequent CIs, thus in electrically stimulated cats (eHCs), and 3) electrically stimulated CDCs. We found significant cross-frequency coupling in all animal groups in > 70% of auditory-responsive sites. The predominant coupling in aHCs and eHCs was between theta/alpha phase and gamma power. In CDCs such coupling was lost and replaced by alpha oscillations coupling to delta/theta phase. Thus, alpha/theta oscillations synchronize high-frequency gamma activity only in hearing-experienced cats. The absence of induced alpha and theta oscillations contributes to the loss of induced gamma power in CDCs, thereby signifying impaired local network activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study investigated the cortical activity changes and time production task performance induced by changes in motion speed of a non-immersive 3D virtual stimulus. Twenty-one individuals were participated in the crossover study with the visual-time reproduction task under three-speed conditions: original, slow and fast virtual stimulus. In addition, the electroencephalographic analysis of the theta band power in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was done simultaneously with time production task execution. The results demonstrated that in the slow speed condition, there is an increase in the error in the time production task after virtual reality (p < 0.05). There is also increased EEG theta power in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in all speed conditions (p < 0.05). We propose that the modulations of speed of virtual stimulus may underlie the accumulation of temporal pulses, which could be responsible for changes in the performance of the production task of the time intervals and a substantial increase in right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activity related to attention and memory, acting in cognitive domains of supraseconds. Because visual long-term memory relies on multiple spatially distinct brain areas, encoding representations is likely to rely on networks formed via large-scale coupled neuronal oscillations. Decreases in occipital alpha power and increases in mid-frontal theta power appear to individually contribute to the encoding of visual long-term memories. Here we ask whether these oscillations form a coupled network. We show that neither amplitude-amplitude nor phase-amplitude coupling between frontal theta and posterior alpha are related to observers' subsequent memory. Correlations between alpha and theta power were stronger during eyes-open, resting-state periods than immediately following the presentation of a to-be-remembered picture. Finally, we found that the strength of theta-alpha coupling was not modified by temporal lobe anodal transcranial direct current stimulation, despite performance showing enhanced memory. Theoretical considerations on the neurobiology of response selection and control suggest that auricular transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (atVNS) should modulate conflict monitoring. However, the neurophysiological-functional neuroanatomical underpinnings are still not understood. Methods AtVNS was applied in a randomized crossover study design (n = 45). During atVNS or sham stimulation, conflict monitoring was assessed using a Flanker task. EEG data were recorded and analyzed with focus on theta and alpha band activity. Beamforming was applied to examine functional neuroanatomical correlates of atVNS-induced EEG modulations. Moreover, temporal EEG signal decomposition was applied to examine different coding levels in alpha and theta band activity. Results AtVNS compromised conflict monitoring processes when it was applied at the second appointment in the crossover study design. On a neurophysiological level, atVNS exerted specific effects because only alpha-band activity was modulated. Alpha-band activity was lower in middle and superior prefrontal regions during atVNS stimulation and thus lower when there was also a decline in task performance. The same direction of alpha-band modulations was evident in fractions of the alpha-band activity coding stimulus-related processes, stimulus-response translation processes, and motor response–related processes. Conclusions The combination of prior task experience and atVNS compromises conflict monitoring processes. This is likely due to reduction of the alpha-band–associated inhibitory gating process on interfering information in frontal cortices. To clarify variations in the relationship between high-frequency activities (HFAs) and low-frequency bands from the tonic to the clonic phase in focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (FBTCS), using phase-amplitude coupling. This retrospective study enrolled six patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy who underwent intracranial electrode placement at Osaka University Hospital (July 2018–July 2019). We recorded 11 FBTCS. The synchronization index (SI) and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis were used to analyze the coupling between HFA amplitude (80–250 Hz) and lower frequencies phase. In the tonic phase, the θ (4–8 Hz)-HFA coupling peaked, and the HFA power occurred at baseline (0 μV) of θ oscillations. In contrast, in the clonic phase, the δ (2–4 Hz)-HFA coupling peaked, and the HFA power occurred at the trough of δ oscillations. ROC analysis indicated that the δ-HFA SI discriminated well the clonic from the tonic phase. The main low-frequency band modulating the HFA shifted from the θ band in the tonic phase to the δ band in the clonic phase. Abstract Infraslow activities and high‐frequency oscillations (HFOs) are observed in seizure‐onset zones. However, the relation between them remains unclear. In this study, we investigated phase‐amplitude coupling between infraslow phase (0.016‐1 Hz) and HFOs' amplitude of focal impaired awareness seizures followed by focal to bilateral tonic‐clonic seizures, in a 28‐year‐old right‐handed man with a dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor. We recorded five habitual seizures. After the time of seizure onset, a significant increase in the power of HFOs was observed, and the power was significantly coupled with θ (4‐8 Hz) phase. In contrast, coupling of infraslow activities and HFOs surged a few minutes before the seizure‐onset time, and ictal HFOs discharged after that. Collectively, our results show that coupling of infraslow activities and HFOs precedes the seizure‐onset time. We infer that such coupling may be a potential biomarker for seizure prediction.

Visual information about the location of an upcoming target can be used to prepare an appropriate motor response and reduce its reaction time. Here, we investigated the brain mechanisms associated with the reliability of directional information used for motor preparation. We recorded brain activity using magnetoencephalography (MEG) during a delayed reaching task in which a visual cue provided valid information about the location of the upcoming target with 50, 75, or 100% reliability. We found that reaction time increased as cue reliability decreased and that trials with invalid cues had longer reaction times than trials with valid cues. MEG channel analysis showed that during the late cue period the power of the beta-band from left mid-anterior channels, contralateral to the responding hand, correlated with the reliability of the cue. This effect was source localized over a large motor-related cortical and subcortical network. In addition, during invalid-cue trials there was a phasic increase of theta-band power following target onset from left posterior channels, localized to the left occipito-parietal cortex. Furthermore, the theta-beta cross-frequency coupling between left mid-occipital and motor cortex transiently increased before responses to invalid-cue trials. In conclusion, beta-band power in motor-related areas reflected the reliability of directional information used during motor preparation, whereas phasic theta-band activity may have signaled whether the target was at the expected location or not. These results elucidate mechanisms of interaction between attentional and motor processes.

• People react differently to equal fairness violations by proposer type. • Same allocation elicited distinct behavioral and neural responses by proposer type. • Unfair allocation elicited longer reaction times. • Fairness-related reaction time difference was more salient in individual proposals. • AN1, P2, MFN, and P3 with alpha and theta bands represent the neural differences. People tend to perceive the same information differently depending on whether it is expressed in an individual or a group frame. It has also been found that the individual (vs. group) frame of expression tends to lead to more charitable giving and greater tolerance of wealth inequality. However, little is known about whether the same resource allocation in social interactions elicits distinct responses depending on proposer type. Using the second-party punishment task, this study examined whether the same allocation from different proposers (individual vs. group) leads to differences in recipient behavior and the neural mechanisms. Behavioral results showed that reaction times were longer in the unfair (vs. fair) condition, and this difference was more pronounced when the proposer was the individual (vs. group). Neural results showed that proposer type (individual vs. group) influenced early automatic processing (indicated by AN1, P2, and central alpha band), middle processing (indicated by MFN and right frontal theta band), and late elaborative processing (indicated by P3 and parietal alpha band) of fairness in resource allocation. These results revealed more attentional resources were captured by the group proposer in the early stage of fairness processing, and more cognitive resources were consumed by processing group-proposed unfair allocations in the late stage, possibly because group proposers are less identifiable than individual proposers. The findings provide behavioral and neural evidence for the effects of "individual/group" framing leading to cognitive differences. • We visualized the phase-amplitude coupling phenomenon related to seizures by showing rhythmic fluctuation of high-frequency activities. • The low frequency band mainly coupled ictal-ripple activities was the θ band (4–8 Hz). • The seizure-related ripple power started to increase, and then spread, with fluctuations, and not with linear increases. We aimed to clarify and visualize how HFAs are modulated by the phase of low-frequency bands during seizures. We used intracranial electrodes to record seizures of focal epilepsy (12 focal-to-bilateral tonic-clonic seizures and three focal-aware seizures in seven patients). The synchronization index, representing PAC, was used to analyze the coupling between the amplitude of ripples (80–250 Hz) and the phase of lower frequencies. We created a video in which the intracranial electrode contacts were scaled linearly to the power changes of ripple. The main low frequency band modulating ictal-ripple activities was the θ band (4–8 Hz), and after completion of ictal-ripple burst, δ (1–4 Hz)-ripple PAC occurred. The ripple power increased simultaneously with rhythmic fluctuations from the seizure onset zone, and spread to other regions. Ripple activities during seizure evolution were modulated by the θ phase. The PAC phenomenon was visualized as rhythmic fluctuations. Ripple power associated with seizure evolution increased and spread with fluctuations. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis/anterior limb of the internal capsule (BNST/ALIC) is successfully used for treatment of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Clinical and experimental studies have suggested that enhanced network synchronization in the theta band is correlated with severity of symptoms. The mechanisms of action of DBS remain unclear in OCD. We here investigate the effect of acute stimulation of the BNCT/ALIC on oscillatory neuronal activity in patients with OCD implanted with DBS electrodes. We recorded the oscillatory activity of local field potentials (LFPs) from DBS electrodes (contact + 0/− 3; bipolar configuration; both hemispheres) from the BNST/ALIC parallel with frontal cortical electroencephalogram (EEG) one day after DBS surgery in four patients with OCD. BNST/ALIC and frontal EEG oscillatory activities were analysed before stimulation as baseline, and after three periods of stimulation with different voltage amplitudes (1 V, 2 V and 3.5 V) at 130 Hz. Overall, acute high frequency DBS reduced oscillatory theta band (4-8 Hz; p < 0.01) but increased other frequency bands in BNST/ALIC and the frontal cortex (p < 0.01). We show that stimulation of the BNST/ALIC in OCD modulates oscillatory activity in brain regions that are involved in the pathomechanisms of OCD. Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a form of experience-dependent synaptic plasticity mediated by glutamatergic transmission at N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs). Impaired neuroplasticity has been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, possibly due to underlying NMDAR hypofunction. Analogous to the high frequency electrical stimulation used to induce LTP in vitro and in vivo in animal models, repeated high frequency presentation of a visual stimulus in humans in vivo has been shown to induce enduring LTP-like neuroplastic changes in electroencephalography (EEG)-based visual evoked potentials (VEPs) elicited by the stimulus. Using this LTP-like visual plasticity paradigm, we previously showed that visual high-frequency stimulation (VHFS) induced sustained changes in VEP amplitudes in healthy controls, but not in patients with schizophrenia. Here, we extend this prior work by re-analyzing the EEG data underlying the VEPs, focusing on neuroplastic changes in stimulus-evoked EEG oscillatory activity following VHFS. EEG data were recorded from 19 patients with schizophrenia and 21 healthy controls during the visual plasticity paradigm. Event-related EEG oscillations (total power, intertrial phase coherence; ITC) elicited by a standard black and white checkerboard stimulus (~0.83 Hz, several 2-min blocks) were assessed before and after exposure to VHFS with the same stimulus (~8.9 Hz, 2 min). A cluster-based permutation testing approach was applied to time-frequency data to examine LTP-like plasticity effects following VHFS. VHFS enhanced theta band total power and ITC in healthy controls but not in patients with schizophrenia. The magnitude and phase synchrony of theta oscillations in response to a visual stimulus were enhanced for at least 22 min following VHFS, a frequency domain manifestation of LTP-like visual cortical plasticity. These theta oscillation changes are deficient in patients with schizophrenia, consistent with hypothesized NMDA receptor dysfunction.

The effect of long-term immobilization on the motor system has been described during motor preparation, imagination or execution, when the movement has to be performed. But, what happens when the movement has to be suppressed? Does long-term limb immobilization modulate physiological responses underlying motor inhibition? Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in healthy participants performing a Go/Nogo task, either with both hands free to respond (T1/T4: before/after the immobilization) or when left-hand movements were prevented by a cast (T2: as soon as the cast was positioned; T3: after one week of immobilization). In the right (control) side, N140, N2, and P3 components showed the expected greater amplitude in Nogo than in Go trials, irrespective of the timepoint. On the contrary, in the left (manipulated) side, each component of the ERP responses to Nogo trials showed specific differences across timepoints, suggesting that the inhibition-related EEG activity is significantly reduced by the presence of the cast and the duration of the immobilization. Furthermore, inhibition-related theta band activity to Nogo stimuli decreased at post-immobilization blocked session (T3-blocked). Altogether these findings can be interpreted as a consequence of the plastic changes induced by the immobilization, as also demonstrated by the cast-related corticospinal excitability modulation (investigated by using TMS) and by the decreased beta band in response to Go and Nogo trials. Thus, only if we are free to move, then inhibitory responses are fully implemented. After one week of immobilization, the amount of inhibition necessary to block the movement is lower and, consequently, inhibitory-related responses are reduced.

This study investigated whether time-estimation task exposure influences the severity of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as theta band activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex. Twenty-two patients with ADHD participated in a crossover experiment with a visual time-estimation task under control conditions (without exposure to time estimation tasks) and experimental (thirty days exposure to time-estimation tasks) in association with electroencephalographic analysis of theta band. ADHD patients with thirty days of time-estimation task exposure presented a worse performance of the time-estimation task, as revealed by the measurements of the absolute error and relative error (p ≤ 0.05). However, our findings show the improvement of self-reported symptoms of attention, impulsivity, and emotional control in patients after the time-estimation task exposure (p = 0.0001). Moreover, the theta band oscillations in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and in the ventrolateral prefrontal increased with thirty days of time-estimation task exposure (p ≤ 0.05). We propose that the decrease in EEG theta power may indicate an efficient accumulation of temporal pulses, which could be responsible for the improvement in the patient cognitive aspects as demonstrated by the current study. Time-estimation task improves ADHD cognitive symptoms, with a substantial increase in cortical areas activity related to attention and memory, suggesting its use as a tool for cognitive timing function management and non-invasive therapeutic aid in ADHD. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) are contemporary methods to investigate the function and organization of the brain. Simultaneously acquired MEG-EEG data are inherently multi-dimensional and exhibit coupling. This study uses a coupled tensor decomposition to extract the signal sources from MEG-EEG during intermittent photic stimulation (IPS). We employ the Coupled Semi-Algebraic framework for approximate CP decomposition via SImultaneous matrix diagonalization (C-SECSI). After comparing its performance with alternative methods using simulated benchmark data, we apply it to MEG-EEG recordings of 12 participants during IPS with fractions of the individual alpha frequency between 0.4 and 1.3. In the benchmark tests, C-SECSI is more accurate than SECSI and alternative methods, especially in ill-conditioned scenarios, e.g., involving collinear factors or noise sources with different variances. The component field-maps allow us to separate physiologically meaningful oscillations of visually evoked brain activity from background signals. The frequency signatures of the components identify either an entrainment to the respective stimulation frequency or its first harmonic, or an oscillation in the individual alpha band or theta band. In the group analysis of both, MEG and EEG data, we observe a reciprocal relationship between alpha and theta band oscillations. The coupled tensor decomposition using C-SECSI is a robust, powerful method for the extraction of physiologically meaningful sources from multidimensional biomedical data. Unsupervised signal source extraction is an essential solution for rendering advanced multi-modal signal acquisition technology accessible to clinical diagnostics, pre-surgical planning, and brain computer interface applications. Domains of cooperative neural activity called 'wave packets' have been discovered in the visual, auditory, and somatomotor cortices of rabbits that were trained to discriminate conditioned stimuli in these modalities. Each domain forms by a first order state transition, which strongly resembles a phase transition from vapor to liquid. In this view, raw sense data injected into cortex by sensory axons drive cortical action potentials in swarms like water molecules in steam. The increased activity destabilizes the cortex. Within 3 to 7 milliseconds of transition onset, the activity binds together into a state resembling a scintillating rain drop, which lasts ~ 80 to 100 milliseconds, then dissolves. Wave packets form at rates of 2 to 7/second in all sensory areas, overlapping in space and time. Results of sensory information processing are seen in spatial patterns of amplitude modulation (AM) of wave packets with carrier waves in the gamma range (20 to 80 Hz in rabbits). The AM patterns correspond to categories of CSs that the rabbits can discriminate. The patterns are found in electroencephalographic (EEG) potentials generated by dendrites and recorded with high-density electrode arrays. The state transitions by which AM patterns form are manifested in the spatial pattern of phase modulation (PM), which have the radial symmetry of a cone. The apex of a PM cone marks the site of nucleation of an AM pattern. The phase gradient gives a soft boundary condition, where the axonal delay in spread gives sufficient phase dispersion to reach the half-power level. The size of the wave packets (10 to 30 mm in diameter in rabbits) is determined largely by the conduction velocities of intracortical axons through which the neural cooperation is maintained. The findings show that significant cortical activity takes the form of mesoscopic interactions of millions of neurons in broad areas of cortex, which are more clearly detected in graded dendritic potentials than in action potentials. The distinction is analogous to the difference between statistical mechanical and thermodynamic descriptions of particle behavior. Both types of neural activity show spatial and temporal discontinuities but at distinctive scales of microns and msec versus mm and tenths of a second. The aim of measurement here is to establish the wave packet as the information carrier at the mesoscopic level in brain dynamics, comparable to the role of the action potential as the information carrier at the microscopic level in neuron dynamics.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive functional imaging technique for pre-surgical mapping. However, movement-related MEG functional mapping of primary motor cortex (M1) has been challenging in presurgical patients with brain lesions and sensorimotor dysfunction due to the large numbers of trials needed to obtain adequate signal to noise. Moreover, it is not fully understood how effective the brain communication is with the muscles at frequencies above the movement frequency and its harmonics. We developed a novel Electromyography (EMG)-projected MEG source imaging technique for localizing early-stage (-100 to 0 ms) M1 activity during ~l min recordings of left and right self-paced finger movements (~1 Hz). High-resolution MEG source images were obtained by projecting M1 activity towards the skin EMG signal without trial averaging. We studied delta (1-4 Hz), theta (4-7 Hz), alpha (8-12 Hz), beta (15-30 Hz), gamma (30-90 Hz), and upper-gamma (60-90 Hz) bands in 13 healthy participants (26 datasets) and three presurgical patients with sensorimotor dysfunction. In healthy participants, EMG-projected MEG accurately localized M1 with high accuracy in delta (100.0%), theta (100.0%), and beta (76.9%) bands, but not alpha (34.6%) or gamma/upper-gamma (0.0%) bands. Except for delta, all other frequency bands were above the movement frequency and its harmonics. In three presurgical patients, M1 activity in the affected hemisphere was also accurately localized, despite highly irregular EMG movement patterns in one patient. Altogether, our EMG-projected MEG imaging approach is highly accurate and feasible for M1 mapping in presurgical patients. Converging results suggest that perception is controlled by rhythmic processes in the brain. In the auditory domain, neuroimaging studies show that the perception of sounds is shaped by rhythmic activity prior to the stimulus, and electrophysiological recordings have linked delta and theta band activity to the functioning of individual neurons. These results have promoted theories of rhythmic modes of listening and generally suggest that the perceptually relevant encoding of acoustic information is structured by rhythmic processes along auditory pathways. A prediction from this perspective—which so far has not been tested—is that such rhythmic processes also shape how acoustic information is combined over time to judge extended soundscapes. The present study was designed to directly test this prediction. Human participants judged the overall change in perceived frequency content in temporally extended (1.2–1.8 s) soundscapes, while the perceptual use of the available sensory evidence was quantified using psychophysical reverse correlation. Model-based analysis of individual participant's perceptual weights revealed a rich temporal structure, including linear trends, a U-shaped profile tied to the overall stimulus duration, and importantly, rhythmic components at the time scale of 1–2 Hz. The collective evidence found here across four versions of the experiment supports the notion that rhythmic processes operating on the delta time scale structure how perception samples temporally extended acoustic scenes. Despite a long history of research into visual search, the behavioral and neural mechanisms associated with multiple-target search are poorly understood. Here we test the novel theory that the efficiency of looking for multiple targets critically depends on the mode of cognitive control the environment affords to the observer. We used an innovative combination of electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye tracking while participants searched for two targets, within two different contexts: either both targets were present in the search display and observers were free to prioritize either one of them, thus enabling proactive control over selection; or only one of the two targets would be present in each search display, which requires reactive control to reconfigure selection when the wrong target has been prioritized. During proactive control, both univariate and multivariate signals of beta-band (15-35 Hz) power suppression before display onset predicted switches between target selections. This signal originated over midfrontal and sensorimotor regions and has previously been associated with endogenous state changes. In contrast, imposed target selections requiring reactive control elicited prefrontal power enhancements in the delta/theta band (2- 8 Hz), but only after display onset. This signal predicted individual differences in associated oculomotor switch costs, reflecting reactive reconfiguration of target selection. The results provide compelling evidence that multiple target representations are differentially prioritized during visual search, and for the first time reveal distinct neural mechanisms underlying proactive and reactive control over multiple-target search. Inhibitory control is a cognitive process that inhibits a response. It is used in everyday activities, such as driving a motorcycle, driving a car and playing a game. The effect of this process can be compared to the red traffic light in the real world. In this study, we investigated brain connectivity under human inhibitory control using the phase lag index and inter-trial coherence (ITC). The human brain connectivity gives a more accurate representation of the functional neural network. Results of electroencephalography (EEG), the data sets were generated from twelve healthy subjects during left and right hand inhibitions using the auditory stop-signal task, showed that the inter-trial coherence in delta (1−4 Hz) and theta (4−7 Hz) band powers increased over the frontal and temporal lobe of the brain. These EEG delta and theta band activities neural markers have been related to human inhibition in the frontal lobe. In addition, inter-trial coherence in the delta-theta and alpha (8−12 Hz) band powers increased at the occipital lobe through visual stimulation. Moreover, the highest brain connectivity was observed under inhibitory control in the frontal lobe between F3-F4 channels compared to temporal and occipital lobes. The greater EEG coherence and phase lag index in the frontal lobe is associated with the human response inhibition. These findings revealed new insights to understand the neural network of brain connectivity and underlying mechanisms during human response inhibition.
