Choosing whether to exert effort to obtain rewards is fundamental to human motivated behavior. However, the neural dynamics underlying the evaluation of reward and effort in humans is poorly understood. Here, we report an exploratory investigation into this with chronic intracranial recordings from the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and basal ganglia (BG; subthalamic nuclei and globus pallidus) in people with Parkinsons disease performing a decision-making task with offers that varied in levels of reward and physical effort required. This revealed dissociable neural signatures of reward and effort, with BG beta (12 to 20 Hz) oscillations tracking effort on a single-trial basis and PFC theta (4 to 7 Hz) signaling previous trial reward, with no effects of net subjective value. Stimulation of PFC increased overall acceptance of offers and sensitivity to reward while decreasing the impact of effort on choices. This work uncovers oscillatory mechanisms that guide fundamental decisions to exert effort for reward across BG and PFC, supports a causal role of PFC for such choices, and seeds hypotheses for future studies.

The present study aimed to investigate how facial features, including facial ratio, eye shape, and mouth presence, influence users' perceptions of social robots in terms of anthropomorphism, trustworthiness, and overall impressions. Using electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye-tracking technologies, we conducted a 2 (face ratio) × 2 (eye shape) × 2 (with or without mouth) full factorial experiment designed within-subject. EEG signals and pupil diameters were recorded while participants viewed images of robots with different facial design features. The results showed that the shape of robot's eyes significantly influenced users' perceptions, with round eyes being associated with higher ratings of anthropomorphism, trustworthiness, and overall positivity. Robots with lower facial width-to-height ratios (fWHR) induced smaller average pupil diameters in users than those with high fWHR. Additionally, robots with lower fWHR were perceived as more anthropomorphic, trustworthy and users produced higher theta rhythm when the eye shape was round but did not when it was rectangular. The presence of a mouth led to higher ratings of anthropomorphism rather than trustworthiness and other measures. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of facial features in shaping users' perceptions of social robots and provide practical implications for designing social robots with anthropomorphic facial features. Episodic memory is organized in both spatial and temporal contexts. The hippocampus is crucial for episodic memory and has been demonstrated to encode spatial and temporal information. However, how the representations of space and time interact in the hippocampal memory system is still unclear. Here, we recorded the activity of hippocampal CA1 neurons in mice in a variety of one-dimensional navigation tasks while systematically varying the speed of the animals. For all tasks, we found neurons simultaneously represented space and elapsed time. There was a negative correlation between the preferred space and lap duration, e.g., the preferred spatial position shifted more toward the origin when the lap duration became longer. A similar relationship between the preferred time and traveled distance was also observed. The results strongly suggest a competitive and integrated representation of space-time by single hippocampal neurons, which may provide the neural basis for spatiotemporal contexts. The CA1 region of the hippocampus is one of the most studied regions of the rodent brain, thought to play an important role in cognitive functions such as memory and spatial navigation. Despite a wealth of experimental data on its structure and function, it has been challenging to integrate information obtained from diverse experimental approaches. To address this challenge, we present a community-based, full-scale in silico model of the rat CA1 that integrates a broad range of experimental data, from synapse to network, including the reconstruction of its principal afferents, the Schaffer collaterals, and a model of the effects that acetylcholine has on the system. We tested and validated each model component and the final network model, and made input data, assumptions, and strategies explicit and transparent. The unique flexibility of the model allows scientists to potentially address a range of scientific questions. In this article, we describe the methods used to set up simulations to reproduce in vitro and in vivo experiments. Among several applications in the article, we focus on theta rhythm, a prominent hippocampal oscillation associated with various behavioral correlates and use our computer model to reproduce experimental findings. Finally, we make data, code, and model available through the hippocampushub.eu portal, which also provides an extensive set of analyses of the model and a user-friendly interface to facilitate adoption and usage. This community-based model represents a valuable tool for integrating diverse experimental data and provides a foundation for further research into the complex workings of the hippocampal CA1 region. Background: Quantitative EEG is frequently used to monitor children affected by acute encephalopathy (AE), with the expectation of providing comprehensive insights into continuous EEG monitoring. However, the potential of quantitative EEG for estimating outcomes in this context remains unclear. We sought reliable prognostic markers within the color density spectral array (CDSA) of the continuous EEG for AE-affected children undergoing therapeutic hypothermia (TH). Methods: This retrospective study analyzed CDSA data from eight scalp electrodes of 15 AE-affected children undergoing TH. Two CDSA features were investigated—high-frequency lines (HFLs) and periodic elevation in the low frequency band (PLFB)—along with the corresponding EEG characteristics. The inter-rater reliability for CDSA was assessed by four pediatric neurologists. Outcomes were grouped into either no/mild or severe decline in motor and cognitive functions, then compared with CDSA features. Results: The median EEG recording time was 114 (81–151) h per child. While at least 41 % of HFLs corresponded to typical sleep spindles, 94 % of PLFB aligned with cyclic changes in the amplitude of delta/theta waves on the raw EEG. Inter-rater reliability was higher for HFLs than for PLFB (kappa values: 0.69 vs. 0.46). HFLs were significantly more prevalent in children with no/mild decline than in children with severe decline (p = 0.017), whereas PLFB did not differ significantly (p = 0.33). Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence that reduced HFLs on CDSA predict unfavorable outcomes in AE-affected children undergoing TH. When administered alone, alcohol reduced all the brainwaves, with the reduction in the alpha waves being exacerbated by ketamine at all doses, and that of the theta and beta waves being boosted at the lowest dose. The intermediate dose of ketamine (20 mg/kg) reverted the alcohol-induced reduction in the theta and gamma waves, whereas the high dose increased delta, theta, beta, and gamma bandpower. During non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, neural ensembles in the entorhinal-hippocampal circuit responsible for encoding recent memories undergo reactivation to facilitate the process of memory consolidation. This reactivation is widely acknowledged as pivotal for the formation of stable memory and its impairment is closely associated with memory dysfunction. To date, the neural mechanisms driving the reactivation of neural ensembles during NREM sleep remain poorly understood. Here, we show that the neural ensembles in the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) that encode spatial experiences exhibit reactivation during NREM sleep. Notably, this reactivation consistently coincides with isolated theta waves. In addition, we found that the nucleus reuniens (RE) in the midline thalamus exhibits typical theta waves during NREM sleep, which are highly synchronized with those occurring in the MEC in male mice. Closed-loop optogenetic inhibition of the RE-MEC pathway specifically suppressed these isolated theta waves, resulting in impaired reactivation and compromised memory consolidation following a spatial memory task in male mice. The findings suggest that theta waves originating from the ventral midline thalamus play a role in initiating memory reactivation and consolidation during sleep. Background: An effective method that is easy to implement and widely applicable for improving driving performance and reducing driving risks remains a challenge. Although fragrances are widely used in daily driving, there is a gap between empirical research on everyday blended fragrances and functional fragrances clinical reports. In this study, a deliberately chosen blend of scent without overtly stimulating or functional proven evidence was tested for its potential to enhance performance in a driving environment. Method: Thirty qualified young drivers were recruited to participate in the experiment. They were asked to watch a 15‐min first‐person perspective driving video to simulate a driving environment and then complete questionnaires and three sets of behavioral experiments while their brain activity was monitored by EEG. Result: Participants in the scented environment exhibited statistically significant advantages in two cognitive tasks during behavioral measures. These findings were effectively supported by the EEG data, showing that beta waves exhibited more activity in the occipital and prefrontal cortex, enhanced theta waves were observed in the prefrontal cortex, and the TAB index characterizing driving fatigue was suppressed in the prefrontal cortex. Conclusion: This empirical evidence highlights the potential of pleasant, natural, and blended scents in enhancing driving performance, suggesting that promoting the aromatherapy while driving as an easily applicable approach in daily life seems justified and expands the application of aromatherapy in daily life. A prime goal of psychological science is to understand how humans can flexibly adapt to rapidly changing contexts. The foundation of this cognitive flexibility rests on contextual adjustments of cognitive control, which can be tested using the list‐wide proportion congruency effect (LWPC). Blocks with mostly incongruent (MI) trials show smaller conflict interference effects compared to blocks with mostly congruent (MC) trials. A critical debate is how proactive and reactive control processes drive contextual adjustments. In this preregistered study (N = 30), we address this conundrum, by using the theta rhythm as a key neural marker for cognitive control. In a confound‐minimized Stroop paradigm with short alternating MC and MI blocks, we tested reaction times, error rates, and participants' individualized theta activity (2–7 Hz) in the scalp‐recorded electroencephalogram. An LWPC effect was found for both, reaction times and error rates. Importantly, the results provided clear evidence for reactive control processes in the theta rhythm: Theta power was higher in rare incongruent compared with congruent trials in MC blocks, but there was no such modulation in MI blocks. However, regarding proactive control, there were no differences in sustained theta power between MC and MI blocks. A complementary analysis of the alpha activity (8–14 Hz) also revealed no evidence for sustained attentional resources in MI blocks. These findings suggest that contextual adjustments rely mainly on reactive control processes in the theta rhythm. Proactive control, in the present study, may be limited to a flexible attentional shift but does not seem to require sustained theta activity. Human behavior needs to be constantly adjusted to changing contexts. The present study measured theta rhythm to investigate two sides of this ability: (1) proactive control, engaged in advance, and (2) reactive control, engaged only when needed. We conclude that mainly reactive control processes drive context adjustments. Opposed to prominent theories, proactive control does not seem to require sustained theta activation and may be established through a swift attentional shift toward relevant information. Alcohol, a widely commercialized psychotropic drug, and the benzodiazepine Flunitrazepam, an anxiolytic widely prescribed for patients with anxiety and insomnia problems, are well known drugs and both act on the central nervous system. The misuse and the association of these two drugs are public health concerns in several countries and could cause momentary, long-lasting and even lethal neurophysiological problems due to the potentiation of their adverse effects in synergy. The present study observed the result of the association of these drugs on electrophysiological responses in the brain, heart, and respiratory rate in Wistar rats. 8 experimental groups were determined: control, one alcohol group (20% at a dose of 1 ml/100 g VO), three Flunitrazepam groups (doses 0.1; 0.2 and 0.3 mg/kg) and three alcohol-Flunitrazepam groups (20% at a dose of 1 ml/100 g VO of alcohol, combined with 0.1; 0.2 and 0.3 mg/kg of Flunitrazepam, respectively). The results showed that there was a more pronounced reduction in alpha and theta wave power in the alcohol-Flunitrazepam groups, a decrease in the power of beta oscillations and greater sedation. There was a progressive decrease in respiratory rate linked to the increase of Flunitrazepam dose in the alcohol-Flunitrazepam associated administration. It was observed alteration in heart rate and Q-T interval in high doses of Flunitrazepam. Therefore, we conclude that the association alcohol-Flunitrazepam presented deepening of depressant synergistic effects according to the increase in the dose of the benzodiazepine, and this could cause alterations in low frequency brain oscillations, breathing, and hemodynamics of the patient. To better understand neural processing during adaptive learning of stimulus‐response‐reward contingencies, we recorded synchrony of neuronal activity in anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and hippocampal rhythms in male rats acquiring and switching between spatial and visual discrimination tasks in a Y‐maze. ACC population activity as well as single unit activity shifted shortly after task rule changes or just before the rats adopted different task strategies. Hippocampal theta oscillations (associated with memory encoding) modulated an elevated proportion of rule‐change responsive neurons (70%), but other neurons that were correlated with strategy‐change, strategy value and reward‐rate were not. However, hippocampal sharp wave‐ripples modulated significantly higher proportions of rule‐change, strategy‐change and reward‐rate responsive cells during post‐session sleep but not pre‐session sleep. This suggests an underestimated mechanism for hippocampal mismatch and contextual signals to facilitate ACC to detect contingency changes for cognitive flexibility, a function that is attenuated after it is damaged. Here, we show that during continuous navigation in a dynamic external environment, mice are capable of developing a foraging strategy based exclusively on changing distal (allothetic) information and that this process may involve two alternative components of the spatial memory circuit: the hippocampus and retrosplenial cortex. To this end, we designed a novel custom apparatus and implemented a behavioral protocol based on the figure-8-maze paradigm with two goal locations associated with distinct contexts. We assessed whether mice are able to learn to retrieve a sequence of rewards guided exclusively by the changing context. We found out that training mice in the apparatus leads to change in strategy from the internal tendency to alternate into navigation based exclusively on visual information. This effect could be achieved using two different training protocols: prolonged alternation training, or a flexible protocol with unpredictable turn succession. Based on the c-FOS mapping we also provide evidence of opposing levels of engagement of hippocampus and retrosplenial cortex after training of mice in these two different regimens. This supports the hypothesis of the existence of parallel circuits guiding spatial navigation, one based on the well-described hippocampal representation, and another, RSC-dependent. The neuropathology of mood disorders, including the diagnostic transition from major depressive disorder (MDD) to bipolar disorder (BD), is poorly understood. This study investigated resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) activity in patients with MDD and those whose diagnosis changed from MDD to BD. Among sixty-eight enrolled patients with MDD, the diagnosis of 17 patients converted to BD during the study period. We applied machine learning techniques to differentiate the two groups using sensor- and source-level EEG features. At the sensor level, patients with BD showed higher theta band power at the AF3 channel and low-alpha band power at the FC5 channel compared to patients with MDD. At the source level, patients with BD showed higher theta band activity in the right anterior cingulate and low-alpha band activity in the left parahippocampal gyrus. These four EEG features were selected for discriminating between BD and MDD with the best classification performance showing an accuracy of 80.88%, a sensitivity of 76.47%, and a specificity of 82.35%. Our findings revealed distinct theta and low-alpha band activities in patients with BD and MDD. These differences could potentially serve as candidate neuromarkers for the diagnosis and diagnostic transition between the two distinct mood disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New memories are integrated into prior knowledge of the world. But what if consecutive memories exert opposing demands on the host brain network? We report that acquiring a robust (food-context) memory constrains the mouse hippocampus within a population activity space of highly correlated spike trains that prevents subsequent computation of a flexible (object-location) memory. This densely correlated firing structure developed over repeated mnemonic experience, gradually coupling neurons in the superficial sublayer of the CA1 stratum pyramidale to whole-population activity. Applying hippocampal theta-driven closed-loop optogenetic suppression to mitigate this neuronal recruitment during (food-context) memory formation relaxed the topological constraint on hippocampal coactivity and restored subsequent flexible (object-location) memory. One of the informative and widely used approaches to understanding the pathogenetic (including neurobiological) mechanisms of schizophrenia is the study of patients with clinically high risk (CHR) for the disease. The power and topography of the theta rhythm event-related synchronization (ERS) related to peripheral stimulus that must be remembered (memory-guided saccades/antisaccades paradigm) have been studied in the groups of 20 mentally healthy subjects and 20 patients with CHR. The analysis was carried out according to the Pfurtscheller method. Based on the saccades latency value and the error numbers, the task performance was decreased in patients with CHR compared to healthy subjects. Intergroup differences by theta rhythm ERS magnitude and topography were found for three consecutive delay period intervals (900 ms each) before saccades to the right and antisaccades to the left. The findings are considered as being the reflection of violations of the spatial attention and working memory maintaining in CHR patients that has a certain interhemispheric asymmetry. It has been suggested an activation of the compensatory processes and the cognitive control reorganization of the fronto-parietal networks with predominantly right hemisphere preservation at the early stage of schizophrenia development. We investigated memory encoding and retrieval during a quasinaturalistic spatial-episodic memory task in which subjects delivered items to landmarks in a desktop virtual environment and later recalled the delivered items. Transition probabilities and latencies revealed the spatial and temporal organization of memory. As subjects gained experience with the town, their improved spatial knowledge led to more efficient navigation and increased spatial organization during recall. Subjects who exhibited stronger spatial organization exhibited weaker temporal organization. Scalp-recorded electroencephalographic signals revealed spectral correlates of successful encoding and retrieval. Increased theta power (T+) and decreased alpha/beta power (A−) accompanied successful encoding, with the addition of increased gamma (G+) accompanying successful retrieval. Logistic regression classifiers trained on spectral features reliably predicted mnemonic success in held-out sessions. Univariate and multivariate electroencephalographic analyses revealed a similar spectral T+A−G+ of successful memory. These findings extend behavioral and neural signatures of successful encoding and retrieval to a naturalistic task in which learning occurs within a spatiotemporal context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Working memory (WM) is crucial for adequate performance execution in effective decision-making, enabling individuals to identify patterns and link information by focusing on current and past situations. This work explored behavioral and electrophysiological (EEG) WM correlates through a novel decision-making task, based on real-life situations, assessing WM workload related to contextual variables. A total of 24 participants performed three task phases (encoding, retrieval, and metacognition) while their EEG activity (delta, theta, alpha, and beta frequency bands) was continuously recorded. From the three phases, three main behavioral indices were computed: Efficiency in complex Decision-making, Tolerance of Decisional Complexity, and Metacognition of Difficulties. Results showed the central role of alpha and beta bands during encoding and retrieval: decreased alpha/beta activity in temporoparietal areas during encoding might indicate activation of regions related to verbal WM performance and a load-related effect, while decreased alpha activity in the same areas and increased beta activity over posterior areas during retrieval might indicate, respectively, active information processing and focused attention. Evidence from correlational analysis between the three indices and EEG bands are also discussed. Integration of behavioral and metacognitive data gathered through this novel task and their interrelation with EEG correlates during task performance proves useful to assess WM workload during complex managerial decision-making. Objective: The study aimed to evaluate, using a network meta-analysis, the effects of different transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) modalities on improving cognitive function after stroke. Methods: Computer searches of the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, Embass, Google Scholar, CNKI, and Wanfang databases were conducted to collect randomized controlled clinical studies on the use of TMS to improve cognitive function in stroke patients, published from the time of database construction to November 2023. Results: A total of 29 studies and 2123 patients were included, comprising five interventions: high-frequency rTMS (HF-rTMS), low-frequency rTMS (LF-rTMS), intermittent theta rhythm stimulation (iTBS), sham stimulation (SS), and conventional rehabilitation therapy (CRT). A reticulated meta-analysis showed that the rankings of different TMS intervention modalities in terms of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores, Mini-Mental State Examination scores (MMSE), and Modified Barthel Index (MBI) scores were: HF-rTMS > LF-rTMS > iTBS > SS > CRT; the rankings of different TMS intervention modalities in terms of the event-related potential P300. amplitude scores were HF-rTMS > LF-rTMS > iTBS > CRT > SS; the rankings of different TMS intervention modalities in terms of the P300 latency scores were: iTBS > HF-rTMS > LF-rTMS > SS > CRT. Subgroup analyses of secondary outcome indicators showed that HF-rTMS significantly improved Rivermead Behavior Memory Test scores and Functional Independence Measurement-Cognitive scores. Conclusions: High-frequency TMS stimulation has a better overall effect on improving cognitive functions and activities of daily living, such as attention and memory in stroke patients. Modified Electric Convulsive Therapy (MECT) is an efficacious physical therapy in treating mental disorders. The occurrence of epilepsy is a crucial benchmark for evaluating therapeutic effectiveness. However, the medical field still lacks relevant research on automatically detecting epileptic waves in MECT. Therefore, this article proposes a novel automatic detection method of epileptic waves in MECT. In this article, EEG local features (time, frequency, and time-frequency domains) and global features (Pearson correlation coefficient) are combined for epileptic wave detection with SVM (Support Vector Machine). We researched the system with 15 EEG detection channels. The dataset under investigation contains EEG data from 22 patients who received MECT and presented with epileptic seizures. The results revealed that LA (Logarithm of Activity) feature exhibits the best classification significance. When epileptic waves appear, there is a decrease in the power ratio of delta waves and an increase in the power ratio of theta waves. Additionally, the complexity of EEG decreases while the correlation between EEG channels increases. The Cz, F4, and P3 channels exhibit the highest classification significance among all EEG channels. Furthermore, based on the channel classification significance, the EEG detection channels number can be reduced to 8. Similarly, based on the feature classification significance, the local feature number can be reduced from 9 to 3. These conclusions can improve detection efficiency and reduce the cost for MECT. Episodic memory arises as a function of dynamic interactions between the hippocampus and the neocortex, yet the mechanisms have remained elusive. Here, using human intracranial recordings during a mnemonic discrimination task, we report that 4-5 Hz (theta) power is differentially recruited during discrimination vs. overgeneralization, and its phase supports hippocampal-neocortical when memories are being formed and correctly retrieved. Interactions were largely bidirectional, with small but significant net directional biases; a hippocampus-to-neocortex bias during acquisition of new information that was subsequently correctly discriminated, and a neocortex-to-hippocampus bias during accurate discrimination of new stimuli from similar previously learned stimuli. The 4-5 Hz rhythm may facilitate the initial stages of information acquisition by neocortex during learning and the recall of stored information from cortex during retrieval. Future work should further probe these dynamics across different types of tasks and stimuli and computational models may need to be expanded accordingly to accommodate these findings.

This work uses Fuzzy Lattices and Neural Reinforcement Learning techniques for seizure classification. EEG database of Bonn University and CHB-MIT has been used for the evaluation of the proposed method. Here, features are represented in the form of fuzzy lattices, and feature vectors are created in the form of Kinetic Energy (K.E.) using Schrödinger equation. Then, the highest K.E.-based seven fuzzy lattices have been used for classification using Neural Reinforcement Learning classifier. Neural Reinforcement Learning classifier is a self-learner method that classifies different seizure sub-classes (healthy eyes open, healthy eye closed, Epileptogenic Zone, hippocampal formation of opposite hemisphere, epileptic seizure). The effectiveness of the proposed method has been tested on two different public datasets. The average classification accuracy achieved is 97.6% and 97.5% for Bonn and CHB-MIT datasets, respectively. Results are compared with existing techniques to show the precedence of proposed approach. Also, computation speed of proposed classifier is more than 1.5 times compared to Fuzzy Q Learning classifier. The objective is to develop a hybrid model integrating fuzzy lattices and neural reinforcement learning (adaptive methods) for accurate classification, aiming to enhance and speeding up seizure detection and diagnosis to improve patient care through advanced computational techniques. Purpose The Omicron variant wave spread rapidly from February 2022 in South Korea following the initial management of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. This study examined electroencephalogram (EEG) findings and serological inflammatory markers in pediatric patients with COVID-19 (Omicron variant). Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 41 patients who presented at Gyeongsang National University Changwon Hospital between March and May 2022 and were diagnosed with COVID-19. All serological tests were performed within 24 hours of fever or seizure onset. Results The median patient age was 3.6 years (range, 0.08 to 14.00), and the average hospital stay was 3.7 days (range, 1.0 to 7.0). Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were elevated above the normal range in all patients (median, 43.18 pg/mL; range, 7.0 to 190.0) and were higher among those who experienced seizures. Of the 41 total patients, 17 (41.5%; mean age, 5.4 years) visited the clinic for seizure. Three patients experienced prolonged seizures (lasting longer than 30 minutes) and received intravenous lorazepam, while eight presented with complex febrile seizures. Nine patients underwent EEG, of whom five exhibited abnormal initial findings. Linear regression demonstrated correlations between prolonged seizure duration and both serum IL-6 level and blood lymphocyte count. Conclusion Numerous serological markers associated with the immune cascade were found to be elevated in children with COVID-19. Nevertheless, febrile seizures represent a relatively common neurological presentation among pediatric patients infected with Omicron variants. Consequently, COVID-19 infection exhibits both familiar and distinct characteristics regarding the mechanisms inducing seizures and fever in children.

The primate including the human hippocampus implicated in episodic memory and navigation represents a spatial view, very different from the place representations in rodents. To understand this system in humans, and the computations performed, the pathway for this spatial view information to reach the hippocampus was analysed in humans. Whole-brain effective connectivity was measured with magnetoencephalography between 30 visual cortical regions and 150 other cortical regions using the HCP-MMP1 atlas in 21 participants while performing a 0-back scene memory task. In a ventromedial visual stream, V1–V4 connect to the ProStriate region where the retrosplenial scene area is located. The ProStriate region has connectivity to ventromedial visual regions VMV1–3 and VVC. These ventromedial regions connect to the medial parahippocampal region PHA1–3, which, with the VMV regions, include the parahippocampal scene area. The medial parahippocampal regions have effective connectivity to the entorhinal cortex, perirhinal cortex, and hippocampus. In contrast, when viewing faces, the effective connectivity was more through a ventrolateral visual cortical stream via the fusiform face cortex to the inferior temporal visual cortex regions TE2p and TE2a. A ventromedial visual cortical 'Where' stream to the hippocampus for spatial scenes was supported by diffusion topography in 171 HCP participants at 7 T. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive cognitive decline and late-stage neurobehavioral issues marked by amyloid-beta plaques and Tau protein tangles. This study aims to investigate Fibulin-1(FBLN1) gene expression in the hippocampal tissue of Presenilin-1/Presenilin-2 conditional double-knockout (DKO) and double-transgenic (DTG) mice, using single-cell sequencing and experimental methods to verify abnormal methylation status and correlation with AD. Genomic DNA from DKO and DTG mice was used for genotyping. Reduced Representation Bisulfite Sequencing (RRBS) identified 10 genes with abnormal methylation changes, with protein–protein interaction (PPI) analysis highlighting five core genes, including FBLN1. Single-cell sequencing, RT-PCR, and Western blotting (WB) were used to analyze FBLN1 mRNA and protein levels in the hippocampal tissues of early-stage and mid-stage AD DKO, DTG, and CBAC57 mice. RRBS identified 10 genes with abnormal methylation, with PPI highlighting five core genes. Single-cell sequencing showed significant FBLN1 expression in AD groups. RT-PCR and WB indicated elevated FBLN1 mRNA and protein levels in mid-stage AD DKO and DTG mice compared to CBAC57 mice, with no differences in early-stage AD DKO and CBAC57 mice. RRBS revealed hypomethylation of the FBLN1 gene in mid-stage AD DKO mice. Elevated FBLN1 expression in AD models suggests an age-dependent neurodegenerative mechanism independent of amyloid-beta deposition. Memory consolidation involves the synchronous reactivation of hippocampal cells active during recent experience in sleep sharp-wave ripples (SWRs). How this increase in firing rates and synchrony after learning is counterbalanced to preserve network stability is not understood. We discovered a network event generated by an intrahippocampal circuit formed by a subset of CA2 pyramidal cells to cholecystokinin-expressing (CCK+) basket cells, which fire a barrage of action potentials (“BARR”) during non–rapid eye movement sleep. CA1 neurons and assemblies that increased their activity during learning were reactivated during SWRs but inhibited during BARRs. The initial increase in reactivation during SWRs returned to baseline through sleep. Previous research has demonstrated a critical link between maternal mental health and infant development. However, there is limited understanding of the role of autonomic regulation in postpartum maternal mental health and infant outcomes. In the current study, we tested 76 mother-infant dyads from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds when infants were 3-months of age. We recorded simultaneous ECG from dyads while baseline EEG was collected from the infant; ECG heart rate variability (HRV) and EEG theta-beta ratio and alpha asymmetry were calculated. Dyadic physiological synchrony was also analyzed to better understand the role of autonomic co-regulation. Results demonstrated that lower maternal HRV was associated with higher self-reported maternal depression and anxiety. Additionally, mothers with lower HRV had infants with lower HRV. Maternal HRV was also associated with higher infant theta-beta ratios, but not alpha asymmetry. Exploratory analyses suggested that for mother-infant dyads with greater physiological synchrony, higher maternal HRV predicted increased infant theta-beta ratio via infant HRV. These findings support a model in which maternal mental health may influence infant neurophysiology via alterations in autonomic stress regulation and dyadic physiological co-regulation. Epilepsy is defined by the abrupt emergence of harmful seizures, but the nature of these regime shifts remains enigmatic. From the perspective of dynamical systems theory, such critical transitions occur upon inconspicuous perturbations in highly interconnected systems and can be modeled as mathematical bifurcations between alternative regimes. The predictability of critical transitions represents a major challenge, but the theory predicts the appearance of subtle dynamical signatures on the verge of instability. Whether such dynamical signatures can be measured before impending seizures remains uncertain. Here, we verified that predictions on bifurcations applied to the onset of hippocampal seizures, providing concordant results from in silico modeling, optogenetics experiments in male mice and intracranial EEG recordings in human patients with epilepsy. Leveraging pharmacological control over neural excitability, we showed that the boundary between physiological excitability and seizures can be inferred from dynamical signatures passively recorded or actively probed in hippocampal circuits. Of importance for the design of future neurotechnologies, active probing surpassed passive recording to decode underlying levels of neural excitability, notably when assessed from a network of propagating neural responses. Our findings provide a promising approach for predicting and preventing seizures, based on a sound understanding of their dynamics. Understanding the sudden regime shifts leading to epileptic seizures is crucial for developing preventive measures. The consolidation of memory is thought to ultimately depend on the synthesis of new proteins, since translational inhibitors such as anisomycin and cycloheximide adversely affect the permanence of long‐term memory. However, when applied directly in brain, these agents also profoundly suppress neural activity to an extent that is directly correlated to the degree of protein synthesis inhibition caused. Given that neural activity itself is likely to help mediate consolidation, this finding is a serious criticism of the strict de novo protein hypothesis of memory. Here, we test the neurophysiological effects of another translational inhibitor, emetine. Unilateral intra‐hippocampal infusion of emetine suppressed ongoing local field and multiunit activity at ipsilateral sites as compared to the contralateral hippocampus in a fashion that was positively correlated to the degree of protein synthesis inhibition as confirmed by autoradiography. This suppression of activity was also specific to the circumscribed brain region in which protein synthesis inhibition took place. These experiments provide further evidence that ongoing protein synthesis is necessary and fundamental for neural function and suggest that the disruption of memory observed in behavioral experiments using translational inhibitors may be due, in large part, to neural suppression. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of event and task-related brain oscillations, focusing on developmental changes across different frequency bands, including delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma. Electroencephalography (EEG) studies highlight that these oscillations serve as functional building blocks for sensory and cognitive processes, with significant variations observed across different developmental stages. Delta oscillations, primarily associated with deep sleep and early cognitive demands, gradually diminish as children age. Anthropomorphized robots are increasingly integrated into human social life, playing vital roles across various fields. This study aimed to elucidate the neural dynamics underlying users' perceptual and emotional responses to robots with varying levels of anthropomorphism. We investigated event-related potentials (ERPs) and event-related spectral perturbations (ERSPs) elicited while participants viewed, perceived, and rated the affection of robots with low (L-AR), medium (M-AR), and high (H-AR) levels of anthropomorphism. EEG data were recorded from 42 participants. Results revealed that H-AR induced a more negative N1 and increased frontal theta power, but decreased P2 in early time windows. Conversely, M-AR and L-AR elicited larger P2 compared to H-AR. In later time windows, M-AR generated greater late positive potential (LPP) and enhanced parietal-occipital theta oscillations than H-AR and L-AR. These findings suggest distinct neural processing phases: early feature detection and selective attention allocation, followed by later affective appraisal. Early detection of facial form and animacy, with P2 reflecting higher-order visual processing, appeared to correlate with anthropomorphism levels. Aim: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. However, while 150+ animal models of AD exist, drug translation from preclinical models to humans for treatment usually fails. One factor contributing to low translation is likely the absence of neurodegenerative models that also encompass the multi‐morbidities of human aging. We previously demonstrated that, in comparison to the PigmEnTed (PET) guinea pig strain which models "typical" brain aging, the Hartley strain develops hallmarks of AD like aging humans. Hartleys also exhibit age‐related impairments in cartilage and skeletal muscle. Impaired mitochondrial respiration is one driver of both cellular aging and AD. In humans with cognitive decline, diminished skeletal muscle and brain respiratory control occurs in parallel. We previously reported age‐related declines in skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiration in Hartleys. It is unknown if there is concomitant mitochondrial dysfunction in the brain. Methods: Therefore, we assessed hippocampal mitochondrial respiration in 5‐ and 12‐month Hartley and PET guinea pigs using high‐resolution respirometry. Results: At 12 months, PETs had higher complex I supported mitochondrial respiration paralleling their increase in body mass compared to 5 months PETs. Hartleys were also heavier at 12 months compared to 5 months but did not have higher complex I respiration. Compared to 5 months Hartleys, 12 months Hartleys had lower complex I mitochondrial efficiency and compensatory increases in mitochondrial proteins collectively suggesting mitochondrial dysfunction with age. A wide variety of driver safety, comfort, and infotainment systems are available in modern cars, many of which rely on wireless connectivity. This article introduces a modified square-shape MIMO antenna designed for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. The design of the antenna operates for WiMAX, WirelssLAN, frequency bands which possess a compact size of 60 mm × 40 mm × 0.256 mm. The antenna utilizes modified square shape stubs and defected ground and achieves dual-band resonance by using circular shapes at the corners and a slot in the center position. The rectangular and circular slots enable resonance at 4.3 GHz & 5 GHz, and also has a low impedance matching with better radiation of omnidirectional patterns. It was determined that the MIMO antenna under consideration reaches a maximum gain of 6.5 dB and 4 dBi at 4.3 GHz and 5 GHz, respectively. When tested at theta = 30° and phi = 90°, this MIMO antenna shows very little backward radiation, exactly −5 dB. The authors have attained reliable communication by fine-tuning the structural parameters of the antenna to achieve the desired passband performance. Furthermore, virtually placing the antenna on a car model and analyzing its performance in a realistic scenario has enabled them to determine the antenna's effectiveness in real-world applications. The authors have also presented better simulation results. This approach provides experimental evidence of the antenna's performance and validates the results, ensuring the proposed antenna meets the required specifications. Objective: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising approach for the treatment of epilepsy. However, the optimal target for DBS and underlying mechanisms are still not clear. Here, we compared the therapeutic effects of DBS on distinct septal subregions, aimed to find the precise targets of septal DBS and related mechanisms for the clinical treatment. Methods: Assisted by behavioral test, electroencephalography (EEG) recording and analyzing, selectively neuronal manipulation and immunohistochemistry, we assessed the effects of DBS on the three septal subregions in kainic acid (KA)‐induced mouse seizure model. Results: DBS in the medial septum (MS) not only delayed generalized seizure (GS) development, but reduced the severity; DBS in the vertical diagonal band of Broca (VDB) only reduced the severity of GS, while DBS in the horizontal diagonal band of Broca (HDB) subregion showed no anti‐seizure effect. Notably, DBS in the MS much more efficiently decreased abnormal activation of hippocampal neurons. EEG spectrum analysis indicated that DBS in the MS and VDB subregions mainly increased the basal hippocampal low‐frequency (delta and theta) rhythm. Furthermore, ablation of cholinergic neurons in the MS and VDB subregions blocked the anti‐seizure and EEG‐modulating effects of septal DBS, suggesting the seizure‐alleviating effect of DBS was dependent on local cholinergic neurons. Significance: DBS in the MS and VDB, rather than HDB, attenuates hippocampal seizure by activation of cholinergic neurons‐augmented hippocampal delta/theta rhythm. This may be of great therapeutic significance for the clinical treatment of epilepsy with septal DBS. Recollecting painful or traumatic experiences can be deeply troubling. Sleep may offer an opportunity to reduce such suffering. We developed a procedure to weaken older aversive memories by reactivating newer positive memories during sleep. Participants viewed 48 nonsense words each paired with a unique aversive image, followed by an overnight sleep. In the next evening, participants learned associations between half of the words and additional positive images, creating interference. During the following non-rapid-eye-movement sleep, auditory memory cues were unobtrusively delivered. Upon waking, presenting cues associated with both aversive and positive images during sleep, as opposed to not presenting cues, weakened aversive memory recall while increasing positive memory intrusions. Substantiating these memory benefits, computational modeling revealed that cueing facilitated evidence accumulation toward positive affect judgments. Moreover, cue-elicited theta brain rhythms during sleep predominantly predicted the recall of positive memories. Fast electrical signaling in dendrites is central to neural computations that support adaptive behaviors. Conventional techniques lack temporal and spatial resolution and the ability to track underlying membrane potential dynamics present across the complex three-dimensional dendritic arbor in vivo. Here, we perform fast two-photon imaging of dendritic and somatic membrane potential dynamics in single pyramidal cells in the CA1 region of the mouse hippocampus during awake behavior. We study the dynamics of subthreshold membrane potential and suprathreshold dendritic events throughout the dendritic arbor in vivo by combining voltage imaging with simultaneous local field potential recording, post hoc morphological reconstruction, and a spatial navigation task. We systematically quantify the modulation of local event rates by locomotion in distinct dendritic regions, report an advancing gradient of dendritic theta phase along the basal-tuft axis, and describe a predominant hyperpolarization of the dendritic arbor during sharp-wave ripples. Finally, we find that spatial tuning of dendritic representations dynamically reorganizes following place field formation. Our data reveal how the organization of electrical signaling in dendrites maps onto the anatomy of the dendritic tree across behavior, oscillatory network, and functional cell states. Neurons receive their input in three dimensions via their dendrites, but how electrical activity in dendrites is organized is unknown. Functional interactions between the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, as revealed by strong oscillatory synchronization in the theta (6-11 Hz) frequency range, correlate with memory-guided decision-making. However, the degree to which this form of long-range synchronization influences memory-guided choice remains unclear. We developed a brain-machine interface that initiated task trials based on the magnitude of prefrontal-hippocampal theta synchronization, then measured choice outcomes. Trials initiated based on strong prefrontal-hippocampal theta synchrony were more likely to be correct compared to control trials on both working memory-dependent and -independent tasks. Prefrontal-thalamic neural interactions increased with prefrontal-hippocampal synchrony and optogenetic activation of the ventral midline thalamus primarily entrained prefrontal theta rhythms, but dynamically modulated synchrony. Together, our results show that prefrontal-hippocampal theta synchronization leads to a higher probability of a correct choice and strengthens prefrontal-thalamic dialogue. Our findings reveal new insights into the neural circuit dynamics underlying memory-guided choices and highlight a promising technique to potentiate cognitive processes or behavior via brain-machine interfacing. Introduction: Status epilepticus (SE) is a seizure lasting more than 5 min that can have lethal consequences or lead to various neurological disorders, including epilepsy. Using a pilocarpine-induced SE model in mice we investigated temporal changes in the hippocampal transcriptome. Methods: We performed mRNA-seq and microRNA-seq analyses at various times after drug treatment. Results: At 1 h after the start of seizures, hippocampal cells upregulated transcription of immediate early genes and genes involved in the IGF-1, ERK/MAPK and RNAPolII/transcription pathways. At 8 h, we observed changes in the expression of genes associated with oxidative stress, overall transcription downregulation, particularly for genes related to mitochondrial structure and function, initiation of a stress response through regulation of ribosome and translation/EIF2 signaling, and upregulation of an inflammatory response. During the middle of the latent period, 36 h, we identified upregulation of membrane components, cholesterol synthesis enzymes, channels, and extracellular matrix (ECM), as well as an increased inflammatory response. At the end of the latent period, 120 h, most changes in expression were in genes involved in ion transport, membrane channels, and synapses. Notably, we also elucidated the involvement of novel pathways, such as cholesterol biosynthesis pathways, iron/BMP/ferroptosis pathways, and circadian rhythms signaling in SE and epileptogenesis. Discussion: These temporal changes in metabolic reactions indicate an immediate response to injury followed by recovery and regeneration. CREB was identified as the main upstream regulator. Overall, our data provide new insights into molecular functions and cellular processes involved at different stages of seizures and offer potential avenues for effective therapeutic strategies. Studies on the neural correlates of navigation in 3D environments are plagued by several issues that need to be solved. For example, experimental studies show markedly different place cell responses in rats and bats, both navigating in 3D environments. In this study, we focus on modelling the spatial cells in rodents in a 3D environment. We propose a deep autoencoder network to model the place and grid cells in a simulated agent navigating in a 3D environment. The input layer to the autoencoder network model is the HD layer, which encodes the agent's HD in terms of azimuth (θ) and pitch angles (ϕ). The output of this layer is given as input to the Path Integration (PI) layer, which computes displacement in all the preferred directions. The bottleneck layer of the autoencoder model encodes the spatial cell-like responses. Both grid cell and place cell-like responses are observed. The proposed model is verified using two experimental studies with two 3D environments. Electroencephalography (EEG) wearable devices are particularly suitable for monitoring a subject's engagement while performing daily cognitive tasks. EEG information provided by wearable devices varies with the location of the electrodes, the suitable location of which can be obtained using standard multi-channel EEG recorders. Cognitive engagement can be assessed during working memory (WM) tasks, testing the mental ability to process information over a short period of time. WM could be impaired in patients with epilepsy. This study aims to evaluate the cognitive engagement of nine patients with epilepsy, coming from a public dataset by Boran et al., during a verbal WM task and to identify the most suitable location of the electrodes for this purpose. Cognitive engagement was evaluated by computing 37 engagement indexes based on the ratio of two or more EEG rhythms assessed by their spectral power. Results show that involvement index trends follow changes in cognitive engagement elicited by the WM task, and, overall, most changes appear most pronounced in the frontal regions, as observed in healthy subjects. The present study investigated the neuroprotective properties of whole plants of Grewia bilamellata Gagnep. extract (GBEE) against cerebral ischemia by harnessing both In vivo studies in a rat model and In silico studies focusing on nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition. High-resolution liquid chromatography‒mass spectrometry (HR LC‒MS) analysis identified 32 phytochemicals in the GBEE, 15 of which adhered to Lipinski's rule of five. These compounds exhibited diverse physicochemical properties and high binding affinity to NOS, with cleomiscosin D showing the greatest potential. In vivo, GBEE had significant neuroprotective effects on bilateral common carotid artery occlusion/reperfusion (BCCAO/R) in rats, especially at doses of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight. GBEE treatment improved brain function, as evidenced by EEG normalization, substantial reductions in cerebral infarction size, mitigated neuronal loss, and the restoration of regular histological arrangement in the CA1 hippocampal area of the brain. Furthermore, GBEE enhanced antioxidant defenses by augmenting the activity of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and restoring reduced glutathione (GSH) levels. These effects were accompanied by a decrease in nitric oxide (NO) levels, indicative of attenuated oxidative and nitrosative stress. Collectively, our findings suggest that GBEE is a promising natural therapeutic agent that may prevent or alleviate ischemic brain injury through a multifaceted mechanism involving NOS inhibition and attenuation of the oxidative stress response. Fear memory is essential for survival and adaptation, yet excessive fear memories can lead to emotional disabilities and mental disorders. Despite previous researches have indicated that histamine H1 receptor (H1R) exerts critical and intricate effects on fear memory, the role of H1R is still not clarified. Here, we show that deletion of H1R gene in medial septum (MS) but not other cholinergic neurons selectively enhances contextual fear memory without affecting cued memory by differentially activating the dentate gyrus (DG) neurons in mice. H1R in cholinergic neurons mediates the contextual fear retrieval rather than consolidation by decreasing acetylcholine release pattern in DG. Furthermore, selective knockdown of H1R in the MS is sufficient to enhance contextual fear memory by manipulating the retrieval-induced neurons in DG. Our results suggest that H1R in MS cholinergic neurons is critical for contextual fear retrieval, and could be a potential therapeutic target for individuals with fear-related disorders. The pervasive nature of short-form video platforms has seamlessly integrated into daily routines, yet it is important to recognize their potential adverse effects on both physical and mental health. Prior research has identified a detrimental impact of excessive short-form video consumption on attentional behavior, but the underlying neural mechanisms remain unexplored. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the effect of short-form video use on attentional functions, measured through the attention network test (ANT). A total of 48 participants, consisting of 35 females and 13 males, with a mean age of 21.8 years, were recruited. The mobile phone short video addiction tendency questionnaire (MPSVATQ) and self-control scale (SCS) were conducted to assess the short video usage behavior and self-control ability. Electroencephalogram (EEG) data were recorded during the completion of the ANT task. The correlation analysis showed a significant negative relationship between MPSVATQ and theta power index reflecting the executive control in the prefrontal region (r = -0.395, p = 0.007), this result was not observed by using theta power index of the resting-state EEG data. Furthermore, a significant negative correlation was identified between MPSVATQ and SCS outcomes (r = -0.320, p = 0.026). These results suggest that an increased tendency toward mobile phone short video addiction could negatively impact self-control and diminish executive control within the realm of attentional functions. This study sheds light on the adverse consequences stemming from short video consumption and underscores the importance of developing interventions to mitigate short video addiction. The associative theory of creativity proposes that creative ideas result from connecting remotely related concepts in memory. Previous research found that higher creative individuals exhibit a more flexible organization of semantic memory, generate more uncommon word associations, and judge remote concepts as more related. In this study (N = 93), we used fMRI to investigate brain regions involved in judging the relatedness of concepts that vary in their semantic distance, and how such neural involvement relates to individual differences in creativity. Brain regions where activity increased with semantic relatedness mainly overlapped with default, control, salience, semantic control, and multiple demand networks. The default and semantic control networks exhibited increased involvement when evaluating more remote associations. Finally, higher creative people, who provided higher relatedness judgements on average, exhibited lower activity in those regions, possibly reflecting higher neural efficiency. We discuss these findings in the context of the neurocognitive processing underlying creativity. Overall, our findings indicate that judging remote concepts as related reflects a cognitive mechanism underlying creativity and shed light on the neural correlates of this mechanism. Combining HD-EEG with connectome modeling predicts individual creative behavior from resting-state functional connectivity, highlighting the importance of optimal activation interplay across networks in creative cognition. Purpose: The Omicron variant wave spread rapidly from February 2022 in South Korea following the initial management of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. This study examined electroencephalogram (EEG) findings and serological inflammatory markers in pediatric patients with COVID-19 (Omicron variant). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 41 patients who presented at Gyeongsang National University Changwon Hospital between March and May 2022 and were diagnosed with COVID-19. All serological tests were performed within 24 hours of fever or seizure onset. Results: The median patient age was 3.6 years (range, 0.08 to 14.00), and the average hospital stay was 3.7 days (range, 1.0 to 7.0). Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were elevated above the normal range in all patients (median, 43.18 pg/mL; range, 7.0 to 190.0) and were higher among those who experienced seizures. Of the 41 total patients, 17 (41.5%; mean age, 5.4 years) visited the clinic for seizure. Three patients experienced prolonged seizures (lasting longer than 30 minutes) and received intravenous lorazepam, while eight presented with complex febrile seizures. Nine patients underwent EEG, of whom five exhibited abnormal initial findings. Linear regression demonstrated correlations between prolonged seizure duration and both serum IL-6 level and blood lymphocyte count. Conclusion: Numerous serological markers associated with the immune cascade were found to be elevated in children with COVID-19. Nevertheless, febrile seizures represent a relatively common neurological presentation among pediatric patients infected with Omicron variants. Walking can have a positive impact on cognitive function in adolescents. This study aimed to compare the effects of walking with sneakers and barefoot on cognitive ability in adolescents. Fifty-nine adolescent male students were included in the study and assigned to the control (n = 20), sneaker (n = 19), and barefoot (n = 20) groups. The barefoot and sneakers group performed a 40-min walking exercise four times a week for 12 weeks during the morning physical activity time, while the control group performed self-study. Electroencephalogram (EEG) and brain activity variables were measured before and after the exercise program. The results showed that after 12 weeks, the barefoot group had a significant decrease in Gamma and H-beta waves and a significant increase in sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) and Alpha waves. Conversely, the control group showed a significant decrease in SMR waves and increase in Theta waves. The sneaker group showed a significant decrease in SMR waves alone. In an eyes-open resting state, the barefoot group showed a significant increase in H-beta, M-beta, SMR, and Alpha waves. The barefoot group also had a significant increase in cognitive speed and concentration and a significant decrease in brain stress. Taken together, barefoot walking can effectively enhance cognitive ability in adolescents, as demonstrated by the significant variation in EEG activity. In the transient regime, the evolution of the air pressure is computed as the solution of a time dependent compressible Reynolds equation. The proposed numerical method is based on a local discontinuous Galerkin method combined with a $ \theta- $method for the time derivative. Great ideas seem to come out of nowhere. Now we are one step closer to understanding how they appear. The areas responsible for language and creativity are thought to compete in the brain, which may explain why some people with brain damage suddenly become artists. Originality - or the ability to think of new ideas that do not occur to many people - is the key aspect of creativity. Researchers are trying to determine the mechanism by which originality is established. While creativity is generated by the right hemisphere of the brain, it is suppressed by language-specific processes in the left hemisphere: "Language regions may compete with the right hemisphere's ability to produce creative ideas." This would explain why when areas responsible for language processing are affected, originality appears to increase. A brilliant idea is not enough to qualify a person as creative. Creativity is among the human characteristics whose mysteries we are still trying to understand. It seems almost impossible to find a clear definition for it, and it is equally difficult to look for its origins in the human brain. Many researchers define creativity as a special performance that is both new and appropriate. If we look at creativity as a concept rather than a trait, a number of factors must be considered. For example, an ingenious idea must be realized in such a way that it is visible and useful to others. Only a person who succeeds in this can truly be called creative. Creativity is a complex process that requires the activation of several areas of the brain. So far it is not clear whether creativity requires a specific neural architecture or not. At the root of all thoughts, emotions and behaviors is communication between neurons. Brain waves are the products of synchronized electrical impulses resulting from the communication of masses of neurons. The speed of brain waves is measured in Hz and are divided into categories that delineate slow, moderate and fast waves. They change according to activities or feelings. The electroencephalograph measures brain waves of different frequencies in the brain by using sensors placed on the scalp, the frequency representing the recurrence of a wave in one second. If any of these frequencies are deficient, excessive or difficult to access, psychic performance can suffer. Learning about brain waves and brain wave frequencies is key to understanding how to navigate and reprogram the mind, and to access deeper levels of consciousness. Gamma oscillations nested in a theta rhythm are observed in the hippocampus, where are assumed to play a role in sequential episodic memory, i.e., memorization and retrieval of events that unfold in time. In this work, we present an original neurocomputational model based on neural masses, which simulates the encoding of sequences of events in the hippocampus and subsequent retrieval by exploiting the theta-gamma code. The model is based on a three-layer structure in which individual Units oscillate with a gamma rhythm and code for individual features of an episode. The first layer (working memory in the prefrontal cortex) maintains a cue in memory until a new signal is presented. The second layer (CA3 cells) implements an auto-associative memory, exploiting excitatory and inhibitory plastic synapses to recover an entire episode from a single feature. Units in this layer are disinhibited by a theta rhythm from an external source (septum or Papez circuit). The third layer (CA1 cells) implements a hetero-associative net with the previous layer, able to recover a sequence of episodes from the first one. During an encoding phase, simulating high-acetylcholine levels, the network is trained with Hebbian (synchronizing) and anti-Hebbian (desynchronizing) rules. During retrieval (low-acetylcholine), the network can correctly recover sequences from an initial cue using gamma oscillations nested inside the theta rhythm. Moreover, in high noise, the network isolated from the environment simulates a mindwandering condition, randomly replicating previous sequences. Interestingly, in a state simulating sleep, with increased noise and reduced synapses, the network can "dream" by creatively combining sequences, exploiting features shared by different episodes. Finally, an irrational behavior (erroneous superimposition of features in various episodes, like "delusion") occurs after pathological-like reduction in fast inhibitory synapses. Heart rate (HR) can be voluntarily regulated when individuals receive real-time feedback. In a rat model of HR biofeedback, the neocortex and medial forebrain bundle were stimulated as feedback and reward, respectively. The rats reduced their HR within 30 minutes, achieving a reduction of approximately 50% after 5 days of 3-hour feedback. The reduced HR persisted for at least 10 days after training while the rats exhibited anxiolytic behavior and an elevation in blood erythrocyte count. This bradycardia was prevented by inactivating anterior cingulate cortical (ACC) neurons projecting to the ventromedial thalamic nucleus (VMT). Theta-rhythm stimulation of the ACC-to-VMT pathway replicated the bradycardia.
