In this paper, we investigate the utility of linguistic features for detecting the sentiment of Twitter messages. We evaluate the usefulness of existing lexical resources as well as features that capture information about the informal and creative language used in microblogging. We take a supervied approach to the problem, but leverage existing hashtags in the Twitter data for building training data.

We describe work on automatically assigning labels to books using user-defined tags as the label set. Using supervised learning and exploring both binary and multiclass classification, we train and test classifiers on several sets of features, focusing on the size of the sets, part-of-speech classes and named entities. Results indicate that a binary classifier, trained and tested on a feature space that consists of a limited selection of parts of speech as well as all frequent named entities, achieves a classification precision of 81%, significantly outperforming a baseline which assigns the top-10 most popular tags to each book.

The importance of sustainability to customers, companies, and society requires an examination of the effects of green new products (GNPs). This study extends past research by examining consumer responses to a GNP and their impact on a parent firm’s corporate reputation (CR). Survey responses were used to test a structural model that investigated whether consumer responses to a new wind farm bolstered an energy service company’s CR. Results suggest adding a GNP to a service company’s portfolio can improve consumer-based perceptions of CR. Perceptions of fit between the GNP and its larger parent company were also found to moderate explanatory links in the model. However, preexisting beliefs consumers held about the value of CSR practices and the importance of the CSR domain in which those actions were engaged did not. Strategic implications discuss how service managers can better use GNP associations to boost CR.

The MPQA Opinion Corpus is a collection of documents with expression-level, multi-attribute annotations of opinions, sentiments, and other private states. This chapter describes the MPQA annotation scheme and the development of the MPQA Corpus.

Term born infants are predisposed to human rhinovirus (HRV) lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) by reduced neonatal lung function and genetic susceptibility. Our aim was to investigate whether prematurely born infants were similarly predisposed to HRV LRTIs or any other viral LRTIs. Infants born less than 36 weeks of gestational age were recruited. Prior to neonatal/maternity unit discharge, lung function (functional residual capacity by helium gas dilution and multiple breath washout, lung clearance index and compliance (Crs), and resistance (Rrs) of the respiratory system) was assessed and DNA samples assessed for eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in seven genes: ADAM33, IL10, MMP16 NFκB1A,SFTPC, VDR, and NOS2A. Infants were prospectively followed until 1 year corrected age. Nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPAs) were sent whenever an infant developed a LRTI and tested for 13 viruses. One hundred and thirty-nine infants were included in the analysis. Infants who developed HRV LRTIs had reduced Crs (1.6 versus 1.2 mL/cmH2O/kg, p = 0.044) at 36 weeks postmenstrual age. A SNP in the gene coding for the vitamin D receptor was associated with the development of HRV LRTIs and any viral LRTIs (p = 0.02).CONCLUSION: Prematurely born infants may have both a functional and genetic predisposition to HRV LRTIs. What is Known: • Term born infants are predisposed to rhinovirus lower respiratory tract (HRV LRTIs) infection by reduced neonatal lung function. • Term born infants requiring hospitalisation due to HRV bronchiolitis were more likely to have single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the IL-10 gene. What is New: • Prematurely born infants who developed a HRV LRTI had lower C rs before maternity unit discharge. • A SNP in the gene coding for the vitamin D receptor was associated with the development of HRV LRTIs and overall respiratory viral LRTIs in prematurely born infants.

Soul Buddyz Clubs, centered on social mobilization and children’s rights, offer a model for developmental child welfare both in South Africa and further afield. Features of successful clubs and the way in which these enhance the lives of children, particularly in under-resourced areas, are highlighted.
