The Hessian Depression in Germany represents the northern continuation of the Upper Rhine Graben and is known for Cenozoic alkaline basaltic lavas. Many of these carry peridotite xenoliths of mantle origin, which were studied mainly in the 80-ies of the XX century (Hartmann & Wedepohl 1990 and references therein). These studies documented mantle lithosphere melting followed by metasomatism. Here we describe the xenoliths from the Stöpfling quarry near Homberg upon Efze. The quarry has been recultivated and sampling is not possible now, our samples come from the archival collection of the Department of Geochemistry of the University of Göttingen. In this abstract, we give an overview of newly collected major- and trace-element mineral-chemical data from 11 xenoliths.The xenoliths from Stöpfling are spinel-facies lherzolites and harzburgites. They consist of aggregates of few coarse (typically 4-6 mm across) grains of olivine and orthopyroxene embedded in fine-grained matrix of olivine, ortho- and clinopyroxene and spinel. Coarse-grained aggregates represent fragments of protogranular texture and are volumetrically prevailing. Spinel is commonly interstitial and has amaeboidal morphology. Peridotite xenoliths from kimberlites are useful tools for exploring the architecture and composition of the thick sub-cratonic lithosphere, and thus understanding the long-term evolution of the Earth’s mantle. However, the continuous infiltration of kimberlite-related melts and fluids prior to - and during - the transport of mantle-derived fragments towards the surface makes it difficult to extract information about the original texture and chemistry of the mantle rocks and the deep-seated metasomatic processes.In this study, fresh spinel- to garnet-bearing peridotite xenoliths from Udachnaya-East were studied to unveil the nature and composition of the lithospheric mantle beneath the Siberian craton. The studied samples have mostly harzburgitic to dunitic composition, even though lherzolites and rare wehrlites are also found. Occasionally, harzburgites are orthopyroxene-rich (up to 40 vol.%) or garnet-rich (up to 30 vol.%). The texture of the peridotites is extremely variable, ranging from protogranular to highly recrystallized and/or sheared. In spinel-bearing rocks, primary olivine is Mg- and Ni-rich (Fo90-93; NiO = 0.34-0.46 wt%), orthopyroxene has Mg# of 92-94 and Al2O3 in the range of 0.3-3.0 wt%, while clinopyroxene is Mg-rich (Mg# 94-96), with Al2O3 comprised between 1.0 and 3.5 wt%. In garnet-bearing peridotites, olivine ranges from Mg- and Ni-rich (Fo92; NiO = 0.45 wt%) to Fe-rich and Ni-poor (Fo87; NiO = 0.25 wt%), while pyroxenes have Mg# from 93 to 87-88 and comparatively low Al2O3 contents (orthopyroxene: 0.5-1.1 wt%; clinopyroxene: 0.8-2.2 wt%). High-precision electron microprobe analyses complemented by thermo- and oxy-barometric models were used to reconstruct the thermo-chemical log of the Siberian sub-cratonic mantle, in comparison to what proposed by Liu et al. (2022). Textural-compositional studies of the reaction zones enabled to discriminate the secondary-formed minerals with composition ascribable to the liquid line of descent of kimberlite-related melts at Udachnaya (Casetta et al. 2023) from those formed during melt/fluid-rock reactions taking place in the mantle before xenoliths’ entrainment by the host kimberlites. Altogether, our results enable to trace the P-T-X evolution experienced by the Siberian mantle, opening a window onto the comprehension of the interactions between kimberlitic-related fluid/melts and the sub-cratonic lithosphere. The Southalpine tectonic domain hosts numerous magmatic manifestations related to the trachybasaltic to trachyandesitic magmatic event that shaped the area during the Ladinian age (Middle Triassic). Triassic volcanism in Greece is mainly associated with the rift phase of the Neotethys that resulted in the formation of E-MORB and OIB alkali basalts, which are widespread throughout the Hellenic mainland[1]. In most of the outcrop localities (e.g. Pindos, Koziakas, Othris, Argolis) these basalts are closely related in the field with other more differentiated volcanics that display a clear subduction signature [1,2]. In the Northern Peloponnese and specifically from the localities of Drakovouni, Palaiohouni and Perachora, three types of lavas were identified: basaltic andesites, andesites and rhyodakites, which are fine to medium grained and displaying either porphyritic or even equigranular textures in the more felsic varieties. These lavas were classified based on their Si, Na and K contents, as well as their Nb/Y vs. Zr/Ti ratios, which were subjected to rather restricted metasomatic processes (LOI:1.1-3.7, partial albitization and uratilization). Based on their potassium contents, as well as upon the AFM geochemical ternary plot and their FeO/MgO ratios, they are geochemically classified as calc-alkaline volcanics, clearly being affected by subduction-related processes. The latter is confirmed by: presence of magmatic magnesiohornblende in all types of lavas at variable amounts, enhanced Th/Yb contents (2.4-4.1), LREE enrichments [(La/Yb)CN=6.2-10.0], lower normalized values of Th and U compared to Nb and Ta, positive K and Pb anomalies, negative Ti anomalies in the PM-normalized diagrams, noticeable LILE enrichments (e.g. Cs, Rb, Ba).Fractional crystallization played a significant role in the differentiation processes. This is confirmed by: presence of primary clinopyroxene and amphibole in the basaltic andesites whose modal composition significantly decreases in the andesites and rhyodakites (only accessory amphibole), relatively strong correlation between Sc/Y with CaO/Al2O3 (R2 = 0.91), positive correlation between P2O5/TiO2 and (La/Yb)N (R2 = 0.87), higher Cr and Ni contents in the least differentiated lavas, increase of Nb/Yb in the highly fractionated lavas, increasing Eu negative anomalies from the compositionally basic to the felsic varieties (basaltic andesites EuCN/Eu*= 0.73-0.80; andesites EuCN/Eu* = 0.63-0.74, rhyodakites EuCN/Eu* = 0.51-0.61). Apart from fractional crystallization, crustal assimilation (AFC processes) likely played an additional role during differentiation, shown by the strongly positive correlation between SiO2 and Nb/Yb (R2 = 0.92). Due to the complex geodynamic framework and the excellent state of preservation of the stratigraphic relationships towards the host metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, the Permo-Triassic magmatic sequences of the Southern Alps (Italy) are intensely studied. Throughout the Southalpine domain, the main peaks of the volcano-plutonic activity are both pre- and post-dated by the emplacement of small volume of magmas with variable chemical affinity. These magmas, preserved as dykes and veins intruded into the plutonic bodies and/or the overlying volcanites, are powerful tools for tracing the evolution of the magma source and reconstructing the temporal evolution of the magmatic episode. Here, we present a detailed geochemical and geochronological study of phonolitic dykes (SiO2 from 56.8 to 57.8 wt.%; Na2O + K2O from 11.1 to 15.3 wt.%) cropping out near Predazzo (Southern Alps; Italy) and intruded into the basaltic to trachyandesitic Middle Triassic lavas. The 3.5-0.5 Ma Devès volcanic field is located in the “southern” mantle domain of the French Massif Central (MC), which originated by partial melting, likely followed by refertilization by melts from the upwelling asthenosphere [1, 2]. However, the extent of melting versus degree of refertilization remains unclear. In order to obtain new insights into this fundamental question, we studied a large mantle xenolith population (n – 21) from a cinder cone in the NW of Devès, the Mt. Briançon nepheline basanite. Extensive use of EMPA and LA-ICP-MS allowed us to gather a comprehensive and representative dataset. Here, we present preliminary interpretations. Ongoing EBSD analyses will provide further data to confirm or correct our hypothesis.The lithospheric mantle (LM) beneath the Devès is heterogeneous. It contains lherzolite with clinopyroxene (cpx) exhibiting REE patterns with relatively flat Lu-Eu and variable LREE-depletion. The coexisting spinel (spl) is highly aluminous (Cr# 0.09-0.15). By analogy with prior work [2], we suggest that cpx and spl were added to the rock by a MORB-type melt [2]. Those lherzolites probably represent refertilized LM similar to the Lherz massif [3], which obscures the original degree of depletion.A distinct mantle region below the Devès is represented by harzburgites and cpx-poor lherzolites containing cpx with REE patterns that show moderately increasing Lu-Sm and steeply increasing towards La. The coexisting spl has medium to high Cr# (0.17-0.28). We suggest that this lithology was not refertilized by MORB-like melts, but records some other metasomatic event(s).A single harzburgite xenolith contains LREE-enriched cpx similar to those described above, but of significantly lower element abundances. This harzburgite is the most magnesian in the entire suite, with olivine Fo ~91.2% and Mg# in pyroxenes ~0.92 (vs Fo 88.5-90.4% and Mg# 0.88-0.91 for other peridotites). Pyroxenes have the lowest Al, Fe, Ti, Na contents in the whole suite and spinel is the most chromian (Cr# ~0.43). Unravelling the processes taking place during the genesis of kimberlites, their ascent through the sub-cratonic mantle and their emplacement in the crust is challenging, as kimberlites are mixtures of mantle-derived and magmatic components, rarely preserving pristine evidence of their original nature. Furthermore, their intense state of alteration makes it difficult to access the textural-compositional record of information engraved in the phase constituents. In this study, fresh samples of kimberlites and related mantle-derived xenocrysts-xenoliths from the Udachnaya pipe (Siberia) were investigated to reconstruct the pressure-temperature-time-composition (P-T-t-X) framework of the sub-cratonic lithosphere at the time of kimberlite emplacement. Routine and high-precision electron microprobe analyses of olivine, phlogopite and spinel from different facies of the Udachnaya pipe (intrusive coherent, hypabyssal and pyroclastic, sensu Scott Smith et al., 2013) showed that specific phase assemblages are associated with each evolutionary stage of the kimberlite. The 2021 eruption of Cumbre Vieja volcano (La Palma Island) is one of the largest natural disasters in Europe in recent times, but also a unique opportunity for monitoring the evolution of a volcanic system and its underlying mantle source.Geophysical and geochemical evidence suggests that volcanism in Canary Islands is driven by the presence of a mantle plume, even though helium isotopes highlight this lower mantle component (3He/4He>9 Ra) only in the Dos Aguas spring gases and the older lavas from the Taburiente caldera (north of La Palma). Conversely, fluid inclusions in lavas and spring gases from the recent Cumbre Vieja system have a MORB-like signature (8±1 Ra). These distinct signatures were ascribed to the mixing between different mantle components (Day and Hilton, 2020). In this framework, the 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption opens new avenues to investigate the current composition of the local mantle and test the pre-existing models.Here, we present the first insights into the 3He/4He signature of volcanic gases and phenocryst-hosted fluid inclusions from lavas erupted by the Cumbre Vieja in September-November 2021. For comparison, we analyzed the poorly evolved lavas from 1677 San Antonio eruption bearing mantle xenoliths (South of Cumbre Vieja) and a 3 Ma old picrite cropping out in the Taburiente caldera, close to the Dos Aguas spring (Day et al., 2010).The 2021 lavas belonging to the October 27th and November 9th flows are basanite tephrites, with an average Mg# of 58.6, being more mafic than those from the September opening phase (Mg# = 50.3; Pankhurst et al., 2022). Olivine phenocrysts have Fo content mostly of mostly 78-83, and elevated Al and Cr contents. The estimated T based on the Cr and Al in olivine thermometers (DeHoog et al., 2010) is 920-960°C.The 3He/4He ratio in phenocryst-hosted fluid inclusions from the 2021 products is 7-7.5 Ra, confirming the MORB-like signature of the volcanic products and gases dissolved in water of the Cumbra Vieja system (Day and Hilton, 2020; Torres-Gonzalez et al., 2020). Instead, the olivines in the Taburiente picrite yield 9.4±0.1 Ra, comparable to values in the Dos Aguas spring, confirming the existence of a lower mantle component below this sector of the island.The distinct 3He/4He signature observed at Taburiente and Cumbre Vieja products is preliminary interpreted as due to either (i) small-scale heterogeneities in the local mantle, and/or (ii) a plumbing system effect that lowers the 3He/4He of the recently erupted magmas. Small, cm-sized ultramafic xenoliths have been reported from the opening phase of the 2021 eruption at Cumbre Vieja, where clinopyroxene aggregates, sometimes amphibole, olivine and/or magnetite-bearing (Pankhurst et al., 2021), likely represent early fractionation products and/or relics of mush-like systems located beneath the volcanic edifice.Detailed sampling of the lavas produced during the intermediate-late eruptive phase (November 9th) revealed the existence, in the massive portion of the flows, of a 1 cm sized dunitic xenolith with protogranular to partly recrystallized texture. The internal portion of the xenolith is composed of Fo88-89 olivine (0.33-0.34 wt% NiO), Ti-Al-poor clinopyroxene (Mg# = 87-92; Al2O3 2 2O3 from 0.4-0.5 to 1.7-1.9 wt%). Textural and chemical data (Fe-Mg distribution) indicate that olivine, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene are not far from equilibrium. Preliminary calculations show that the equilibrium T recorded by the xenolith ranges from 950 to 1070°C, with good consistency between results obtained from olivine-spinel and orthopyroxene-clinopyroxene pairs. Silica oversaturated interstitial glasses (SiO2= 67 wt%) were found in the partly recrystallized part of the xenolith.Part of the coarse-grained xenolith forms a corona of fine-grained and worm-like association of, olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and spinel. Both parts are surrounded by a continuous narrow external zone consisting of Ti-magnetite and sub-euhedral greenish Ti-augite, which is in contact with the host basalt. The composition of olivine and orthopyroxene in the corona keeps getting more Fe-rich towards the external zone whereas the clinopyroxene changes gradually from Ti-free to Ti-bearing diopside.The small xenolith recovered from the November 9th lava flow is apparently a mantle-derived xenolith similar to those from the Duraznero 1949 eruption described by Klügel (1998), and those from the San Antonio 1677 eruption described by Neumann & Wulff-Pedersen, 1997. On the way to surface, the mantle xenolith likely reacted with basaltic melts to form the first corona. These processes presumably took place in depths between 0.10-0.12 GPa as can be inferred by the presence of silica oversaturated glasses (Neumann & Wulff-Pedersen, 1997). The external zone probably formed as the result of a late-stage stagnation of the host magma at sub-crustal depths, as suggested by the compositional similarity between the clinopyroxene-spinel assemblage and the phenocrysts in the matrix. Southern Sweden (Scania region) is located in the peripherical parts of the East European Craton (EEC). In the Mesozoic, up to three pulses of volcanic activity took place between 191 and 110 Ma (Bergelin et al., 2006, IJES; Tappe et al., 2016, GCA). Some of the alkali basaltoids carry ultramafic, mafic and felsic xenoliths (Rehfeldt et al, 2007, IJES). In this study, we focused on the evolution of the lithospheric mantle sampled by anhydrous, spinel-facies lherzolites, harzburgites, and subordinate dunites.Based on the Fo content in olivine, the peridotites were classified into three groups. Group X peridotites are characterized by Ca-rich olivine (890-1470 ppm) with Fo=91.1-91.7. Enstatite has Mg#=91.5-91.9 and Al=0.16-0.22 atoms per formula unit (apfu), while the Cr-augite has Mg#= 90.8-91.2 and Al=0.21-0.28 apfu. Clinopyroxene is chemically homogenous in terms of trace elements and is LREE-enriched with positive Eu-anomaly. The Nd and Sr isotopic ratios in clinopyroxene are 143Nd/144Nd=0.512548 (εNd=2.63) and 87Sr/86Sr=0.704237, respectively. Olivine in group Y peridotites is Ca-poor (143Nd/144Nd=0.512624–0.512644 (εNd=4.13-4.52) and 87Sr/86Sr=0.703027–0.703100, therefore significantly more depleted than group X. In group Z peridotite the Fo content in olivine is 88.1-89.1, the Mg# in enstatite is 89.1-89.5 and its Al content is 0.19-0.20 apfu. The Mg# of Cr-diopside is 88.5-89.4 and the Al content is 0.24-0.25 apfu. The trace elements contents in clinopyroxene is homogenous and the REE pattern is flat at values double that in the primitive mantle. The highest equilibration temperatures were estimated for the group X xenoliths, where TWES=1101-1110 °C (Witt-Eickschen and Seck, 1991, CMP) and TBK=1214-1241 °C (Brey and Köhler, 1990, JoP). The temperatures calculated for group Y xenoliths are TWES=875-1033 °C and TBK=872-1027 °C and do not significantly differ between subgroups. Temperatures recorded by the group Z sample are TWES=1040-1056 °C and TBK=1065-1081 °C.The composition of group X peridotites suggests their metasomatism by a high-temperature mafic melt resembling the basaltoids from Scania. Alternatively, they may represent high-pressure cumulates, as suggested by their coarse-grained texture. The group Y peridotites record cryptic metasomatism of a significantly depleted peridotite (melt extraction ranging typically between 25 and 30%) by a carbonatitic melt. The carbonatitic metasomatic agent was fractionating chromatographically from REE-, Th- and U-rich in subgroup Y2 to -poor in those elements in subgroup Y2. The group Z peridotite possibly represents depleted peridotite which was further metasomatized by a mafic melt. The lithospheric mantle beneath the marginal part of EEC has a complex composition, which is however different from a typical cratonic mantle. Founded by Polish National Science Centre grant no. The Wum maar is located in the Oku Volcanic group, part of continental sector of the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) in west Africa, which consists of volcanoes active from Eocene to recent. The continental part of the CVL is located on the metamorphic-igneous basement of the Neoproterozoic Central African Orogenic Belt (CAOB), which originated during Gondwana assembly. Some of the CVL lavas contain spinel-facies peridotite and pyroxenite xenoliths giving insight into the mantle lithosphere underlying the CAOB.We studied xenolith suite (19 xenoliths) from the Wum maar, comprising 14 lherzolites and 5 websterites. The half of lherzolites (7) consist of minerals with fertile composition (olivine Fo89, orthopyroxene Al 0.16-0.19 atoms per formula unit, clinopyroxene Al 0.28-0.31 a pfu, spinel Cr# 0.08-0.13). Clinopyroxene is REE-depleted and has 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.7017-0.7021. A reconnaissance study of crystal preferred orientation (CPO) by EBSD shows that at least in part of the rocks the clinopyroxene fabric is very weak, suggesting that its crystallization post-dates the primary deformation event recorded by the olivine-orthopyroxene framework. A smaller part of lherzolites (5) contains clinopyroxene the CPO of which fits that of the olivine-orthopyroxene framework, is LREE-enriched and has 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.7027-0.7028. One of these lherzolites contains amphibole (pargasite), which forms aggregates and schlieren and texturally is later than olivine-pyroxene host. CPO of amphibole, ortho- and clinopyroxene is decoupled from that of olivine in that rock. Two lherzolites have slightly depleted mineral compositions (olivine Fo90-91, orthopyroxene Al 0.15 apfu, clinopyroxene Al 0.25 a pfu, spinel Cr# 0.18).Websterites are dominated by orthopyroxene (Al 0.20-0.21 a pfu) whereas clinopyroxene (Al 0.30-0.31) is subordinate, and is characterized by LREE-depletion and 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.7019-0.7020. Spinel occurring in websterites is aluminous (Cr# 0.04-0.06), in some samples subordinate olivine (Fo90) occurs. One of the xenoliths consists of millimetric monomineral layers of pyroxenes and olivine chemically identical to those occurring in websterites. The mineral chemical data coupled with mineral fabrics suggest that lherzolites with LREE-depleted clinopyroxene could have originated by late crystallization caused by melt metasomatism. The metasomatic agent is probably best represented by websterites, which contain LREE-depleted clinopyroxene with similar, depleted 87Sr/86Sr of 0.7019-0.7020 (compare to DM value of 0.7026, Workman and Hart 2005), confirming earlier findings of refertilization of the regional lithospheric mantle by highly depleted melts (Tedonkenfack et al. 2021). The addition of amphibole was connected with recrystallization of ortho- and clinopyroxene and with significant change of its 87Sr/86Sr signature to more radiogenic values.Funding. The 3.5-0.5 Ma Devès volcanic field consists mainly of nepheline basanite rocks. The underlying Variscan basement is a part of the western Moldanubian Zone (an allochton of the European Variscan orogen, probably the Gondwana margin). The Devès volcanic field is located in the “southern” mantle domain of Massif Central (MC), which consists of fertile lithospheric mantle (LM) little affected by partial melting [1]. These characteristics probably resulted from intense metasomatism by melts coming from the upwelling asthenosphere [2].Despite the rich literature dealing with the LM beneath the Devès volcanic field, some textural and geochemical details remain obscure. We studied a large xenolith population (n – 21) from Mt.Briançon (NW of the Devès volcanic field) with extensive use of EMPA and LA-ICP-MS in order to obtain a comprehensive and representative data set, and here present the preliminary findings.The Mt.Briançon xenoliths are typically oval in shape and vary in size from 4 to 13 cm. The host rocks are tuff and scoria deposits. The xenoliths are mostly anhydrous spinel lherzolites rich in clinopyroxene (cpx, modal content up to 28%) and scarce harzburgites. One xenolith consists of olivine clinopyroxenite in contact with peridotite. The peridotites exhibit serial texture or different stages of porphyroclastic texture. In some xenoliths elongated spinel is arranged in streaks.Most of the three major phases in the peridotites are homogenous at the grain and xenolith scale. Olivine Fo is typically 88.5-90.4% in the whole suite, and NiO content is 0.35-0.43 wt.%. Orthopyroxene (opx) has Mg# 0.89-0.91 and 0.128-0.217 atoms of Al per formula unit (apfu). Cpx has Mg# 0.88-0.91 and Al content of 0.208-0.316 apfu and spinel Cr# is highly variable in the whole suite (0.09-0.28). In contrast, one harzburgite (sample 4025) has olivine with higher Fo (~91.2%), opx with higher Mg# (~0.92) and lower Al content (0.111-0.116 apfu), cpx with Mg# ~0.92 and Al content of ~0.145 apfu, and spinel Cr# of ~0.43 and Mg# of ~0.75.The main observed REE pattern in peridotite cpx is relatively flat Lu-Eu and slightly, but variably depleted in lighter REE. In several xenoliths cpx exhibits various REE patterns, transitioning from LREE-depleted to relatively flat or slightly LREE-enriched, while a few samples contain cpx with REE abundances moderately increasing Lu-Sm and steeply increasing towards La. The majority of peridotite opx REE patterns are moderately decreasing in Lu-Sm and more steeply decreasing towards La, whereas a less common opx pattern is similar to the previous one in Lu-Nd, but much less depleted in lighter REE. This opx coexists with LREE-rich cpx.This study confirms that the LM beneath Mt.Briançon is mostly lherzolitic and quite fertile in terms of major elements. Ongoing work, utilizing the diversity of lithologies and pyroxene REE patterns, combined with detailed major-element and REE thermometry and with textural observations, will provide detailed insights into the microstructural, thermal and metasomatic history of the LM beneath the MC. The investigation of the role played by CO2 circulating within the mantle during partial melting and metasomatic/refertilization processes, together with a re-consideration of its storage capability and re-cycling in the lithospheric mantle, is crucial to unravel the Earth's main geodynamic processes. In this study, the combination of petrology, CO2 content trapped in bulk rock- and mineral-hosted fluid inclusions (FI), and 3D textural and volumetric characterization of intra- and inter-granular microstructures was used to investigate the extent and modality of CO2 storage in depleted and fertile (or refertilized) Sub-Continental Lithospheric Mantle (SCLM) beneath northern Victoria Land (NVL, Antarctica). Prior to xenoliths entrainment by the host basalt, the Antarctic SCLM may have stored 0.2 vol% melt and 1.1 vol% fluids, mostly as FI trails inside mineral phases but also as inter-granular fluids. The amount of CO2 stored in FI varies from 0.1 μg(CO2)/g(sample) in olivine from the anhydrous mantle xenoliths at Greene Point and Handler Ridge, up to 187.3 μg/g in orthopyroxene from the highly metasomatized amphibole-bearing lherzolites at Baker Rocks, while the corresponding bulk CO2 contents range from 0.3 to 57.2 μg/g. Irrespective of the lithology, CO2 partitioning is favoured in orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene-hosted FI (olivine: orthopyroxene = 0.10 ± 0.06 to 0.26 ± 0.09; olivine: clinopyroxene = 0.10 ± 0.05 to 0.27 ± 0.14). The H2O/(H2O + CO2) molar ratios obtained by comparing the CO2 contents of FI to the H2O amount retained in pyroxene lattices vary between 0.72 ± 0.17 and 0.97 ± 0.03, which is well comparable with the values measured in olivine-hosted melt inclusions from Antarctic primary lavas and assumed as representative of the partition of volatiles at the local mantle conditions. From the relationships between mineral chemistry, thermo-, oxy-barometric results and CO2 contents in mantle xenoliths, we speculate that relicts of CO2-depleted mantle are present at Greene Point, representing memory of a CO2-poor tholeiitic refertilization related to the development of the Jurassic Ferrar large magmatic event. On the other hand, a massive mobilization of CO2 took place before the (melt-related) formation of amphibole veins during the alkaline metasomatic event associated with the Cenozoic rift-related magmatism, in response to the storage and recycling of CO2-bearing materials into the Antarctica mantle likely induced by the prolonged Ross subduction.

—Fragments of P-bearing olivine have been studied in lunar highland, mare, and mingled meteorites and in “Apollo-14”, “Luna-16, -20, -24” lunar samples. The olivines contain up to 0.5 wt % P2O5 and have variable MG# numbers. They are associated with anorthite, pyroxene, and accessory spinel-group minerals, Ti and Zr oxides, phosphates, troilite, and Fe–Ni metal. Three possible sources of P-bearing olivine were found in the lunar material: 1) highland anorthositic–noritic–troctolitic rocks enriched in incompatible elements and interpreted to be related to high-Mg suite rocks: 2) late-stage products of mare basalts crystallization; and 3) unusual olivine–orthopyroxene intergrowths of meteoritic or lunar origin. Enrichment in incompatible elements may result from both crystallization processes (source 2) and KREEP assimilation (sources 1 and 3). However, superimposed metasomatic processes can lead to some addition of phosphorus and other elements. The rarity of P-bearing olivines points either to the low abundance or local distribution of their sources in the lunar crust. Association with mare basalts specifies the highland–mare boundary. The presence of evolved rocks in the studied breccias suggests a possible connection of some sources with recently discovered granitic domes in Procellarum Ocean. This means the P-bearing sources are mainly localized on the nearside of the Moon.

Besides mantle peridotites primary basaltic melts are the best tool to investigate upper mantle petrology and geochemistry. However, de facto primitive melts are hard to found, as basaltic melts usually go through a fractionation process during their ascent towards the surface. Most primary melt calculators are based on the major or trace element compositions of olivine-phyric ocean island basalts and peridotites and are less accurate if clinopyroxene fractionation occurred. In this chapter a new fractionation modeling method of alkaline basalts will be introduced, which has been published earlier only in Hungarian. Olivine clinopyroxene fractionation of four basaltic volcanoes have been modeled from different Miocene- Quaternary volcanic fields from the Carpathian-Pannonian Region (Stiavnica (Selmec) VF, Novohrad-Gemer (Nograd-Gomor) VF, Persani Mts. Migration of metals such as gold, silver and copper through the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) can be tracked by the investigation of sulfides in mantle xenoliths. Therefore, to understand relations between the metal migration and metasomatism of silicate phases in the SCLM beneath SW Poland we studied sulfides in a set of mantle ultramafic xenoliths with variable metasomatic history. The xenoliths occur in the Cenozoic alkaline mafic volcanic rocks from the SW Poland (N Bohemian Massif). The studied sulfides occur in mantle rocks of variable history: 1) strongly depleted (group A0) to weakly metasomatized peridotites (Group A1); 2) strongly melt-metasomatized peridotites (Group B); 3) pyroxenites (Group C; for details of group definition see Matusiak-Małek et al., 2014, JoP). The metasomatism was of mixed silicate/carbonatite nature. The sulfides are either interstitial or enclosed in the silicates and form mostly globular monosulfide solid solution-chalcopyrite (mss-Ccp) assemblages typical of igneous sulfides separated and crystallized from mafic magmas, with mss partially re-equilibrated to exsolutions of pentlandite (Pn) and pyrrhotite (Po) when temperature dropped to The sulfide abundances increase from Group A (≤ 0.008 vol.‰) through Group B (up to 0.060 vol. ‰) to Group C (up to 0.963 vol.‰) xenoliths. The sulfides of Groups C (Po15–99Pn0–20Ccp0–70)and B (Po0–85Pn14–100Ccp0–27) are generally poorer in Ni compared to Group A (Po0–74Pn24–100Ccp0–35). Consequently, Ni/(Ni+Fe) in the Group C pentlandites (0.41–0.52) is lower than in those in Group A (0.45–0.69). Moreover, the sulfide grains of Group B are enriched in chalcophile elements (e.g., the median content of Zn is 90 ppm) compared to sulfides from Groups C (52 ppm Zn) and A (51 ppm of Zn). The same relations occur in PGE contents, e.g., Pt in Group B is 1.6 ppm, while in Groups C and A it is 0.1 and 1.3 ppm, respectively. Observed differences in δ56Fe between the Groups are probably due to modal composition of bulk sulfide grains between Groups A (Ni-rich), B and C (Fe-Cu-rich). As no difference is observed between the grains of the same composition, any fractionation of Fe isotopes in sulfide melt seems to be possible only upon its differentiation from Ni-rich to Fe-Cu-rich.The host peridotites were affected by strong depletion as the degree of partial melting was possibly ~30%. Thus, the observed enhanced sulfide modes in the metasomatized peridotites (Groups A1 and B) are most likely brought by the metasomatic melt. This is also evidenced by their Fe-Cu-rich composition, similar to that of the sulfides from the pyroxenites. In this view, melt metasomatism likely affects the chalcophile and highly-siderophile metal budget of the continental lithosphere. The measurements of Fe isotopic ratios were financed from funds for years 2020-2024 within program “Diamond Grant” (DI2019 0093 49), the LAICPMS measurements were financed from 2016/23/N/ST10/00288 to J.C., and the EPMA analyses were done within the frame of the Polish-Austrian project WTZ PL/16 and WTZ PL 08/2018.

Late Carboniferous/early Permian mafic volcanic rocks occurring in Scotland carry a broad spectrum of peridotitic and pyroxenitic xenoliths. The latter provide evidence of magmatic processes in the lower crust and the lithospheric mantle. In this study we present textural and compositional data on twenty-eight pyroxenitic xenoliths from six localities from southern Scotland (Midland Valley and Southern Uplands Terranes).Most are interpreted as adcumulates (varying in grain size from fine to coarse) although some others are mesocumulates. They include both clinopyroxenites and websterites with variable amounts of olivine; phlogopite is present in only one sample. Cores of greenish clinopyroxene in three of the olivine clinopyroxenites are enveloped by brownish clinopyroxene, while one composite xenolith comprising coarse-grained olivine clinopyroxenite in sharp contact with harzburgite. Five groups, based on textural and mineralogical features were distinguished. Representatives of more than one group can be present in a single locality.Most of the samples from the same textural group share similar chemical composition. In general, the clinopyroxenes are Ti,Al-diopside/augite with Mg#=0.74-0.86; where clinopyroxenes are zoned the rims have lower Mg# and higher Al content. The orthopyroxene is an Al (±Cr)-enstatite with Mg#=0.78-0.89, olivine (Fo76-77) is relatively NiO-rich (0.16-0.29 wt.%). In clinopyroxenites the pyroxenes are LREE-enriched (LaN/LuN=1.31-3.17) with convex-upward REE patterns (SmN/LuN=2.48-7.37).The temperatures and pressures of clinopyroxene crystallization in most of the clinopyroxenites are 1220-1300°C and 1.08–1.30 GPa (Putirka, 2008), respectively. Only the composite xenolith and the coarse-grained clinopyroxenites recorded higher pressures (1.42 and 1.65-2.03 GPa, respectively). As the Moho beneath S Scotland is located at ~35 km (corresponding to ~1 GPa; Davis et al., 2012), most of the clinopyroxenites are considered to come from the uppermost portions of lithospheric mantle or lowermost continental crust; the coarse-grained clinopyroxenites and the composite xenolith sample lithospheric mantle.Clinopyroxenites from the southern Scotland crystallized from alkaline basaltic magmas similar to those that entrained them. Whilst Downes et al. (2007, 2001) had previously suggested this for clinopyroxenites from Midland Valley localities, our studies show that crystallization of mafic melts was more widespread. Strong chemical and textural variations in the pyroxenites together with relatively constant PT conditions of crystallization suggest that they formed either from melts of slightly different composition, perhaps in response to magma chamber processes such as magma replenishment and/ or mixing. While, the presence of mafic cumulates points to possible crustal underplating beneath S Scotland, the presence of a high-pressure clinopyroxenites and composite clinopyroxenitic-peridotitic xenolith imply that some of the pyroxenites originated in the lithospheric mantle.Davis et al. Vogelsberg is a Cenozoic volcanic field situated at the northern tip of the Upper Rhine Graben. It stretches over two major Variscan basement units: the Rheno-Hercynian Zone in the NW and the Saxo-Thuringian Zone in the SE. We studied peridotite xenoliths from Breitenborn, Nidda and Dreihausen (SE, central and NW part of Vogelsberg, respectively) in order to reveal the evolution of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) rejuvenated during a Cenozoic rifting episode.The Vogelsberg xenoliths are spinel harzburgites and clinopyroxene-poor spinel lherzolites. Most samples show grain size reduction leading to serial or porphyroclastic texture, or slight to well-defined foliation. All studied sites have similar major elements chemistry: olivine Fo 89.3-91.7%; orthopyroxene (opx) Mg# 0.89-0.92 and 0.06-0.25 atoms of Al pfu (per formula unit); clinopyroxene (cpx) Mg# 0.89-0.93 and 0.10-0.33 atoms of Al pfu. Spinel Cr# is highly variable: 0.18-0.45 for Breitenborn, 0.14-0.57 for Nidda and 0.11-0.61 for Dreihausen.Vogelsberg peridotites exhibit a diversity of REE patterns:(1) opx with a sinusoidal pattern, no cpx (Nidda, Dreihausen);(2) cpx with flat patterns; coexisting opx with strong LREE-depletion, (La/Lu)N ~0.02 (Nidda, Dreihausen)(3) cpx with flat, spoon-shaped patterns with La-Ce-enrichment (La/Pr)N ~4.3; opx similar to (2) but partly spoon-like, (Nd/Lu)N ~0.02 (Nidda, Breitenborn)(4) cpx with different degree of LREE-enrichment, (La/Lu)N­ of 4-21.4; coexisting opx with mild LREE-depletion, (La/Lu)N of 0.1-0.3 (Breitenborn, Nidda, Dreihausen)(5) cpx with flat HREE pattern and strongly LREE-depleted, (La/Eu)N ~0.03; coexisting opx similar to (2) but with (Ce/Lu)N ~0.001 (Breitenborn)Temperatures calculated using REE content (TREE) [1] for the Breitenborn peridotites exhibit two ranges: 930-990°C and 1050-1130°C, for the Nidda ones: 880-930°C, 1000-1050°C and 1110-1150°C and for Dreihausen ones: 1140-1190°C. Temperatures calculated on the basis of pyroxene major element contents (TBKN) [2] are 40-90°C lower than TREE in Breitenborn and Nidda and lower by 10-55°C in Dreihausen.The most common pyroxene REE patterns (type 4) are products of two-phase metasomatism: by Vogelsberg alkali basalt followed by a highly LREE-rich melt that further increased LREE contents in cpx, up to observed abundances. Strongly LREE-depleted opx (types 2, 3, 5) and cpx (type 5) patterns could be residues after partial melting of a fertile protolith, or products of metasomatism by melts derived from depleted MORB mantle. Cpx patterns of type 2 and 3 might have been once similar to type 5 but were later affected by the second phase of metasomatism: highly LREE-rich melt that increased chromatographically their LREE contents to variable degrees. The diversity of REE patterns and calculated temperatures shows that the SCLM beneath Vogelsberg is highly heterogeneous, probably due to spatial variability of deformation and percolation of hot melts connected with Cenozoic rifting. Integrating petrography and mineral chemistry data with the determination of volatiles concentration and isotopic fingerprint in fluid inclusions (FI) in ultramafic xenoliths opens a new window on the study of the Sub-Continental Lithospheric Mantle (SCLM). This frontier approach is crucial for understanding nature, evolution and volatiles recycling within the lithosphere, being particularly important in active or dormant volcanic areas, where the signature of the surface gaseous emissions can be compared to that of the deep mantle domains.Five distinct populations of ultramafic xenoliths brought to the surface in West Eifel (~0.5-0.01 Ma) and Siebengebirge (~30-6 Ma) volcanic fields (Germany) were investigated by combining petrographic and mineral chemistry analyses with noble gases + CO2 determinations in olivine-, orthopyroxene- and clinopyroxene-hosted FI. Xenoliths from West Eifel are modally and compositionally heterogeneous, as testified by the large forsterite range of olivine, the Cr# range of spinel and the variable Al and Ti contents of pyroxene. Siebengebirge rocks, on the other hand, are quite homogeneous, having mostly refractory composition and reflecting high extents (up to 30%) of melt extraction. Equilibration temperatures vary from 900 to 1180 °C in West Eifel and from 880 to 1060°C in Siebengebirge xenoliths, at comparable oxygen fugacity values. In all xenoliths populations, FI composition is dominated by CO2, with olivines being the most gas-poor phases and reflecting a residual mantle that experienced one or more melt extraction episodes. The 3He/4He ratio corrected for air contamination (Rc/Ra values) in all phases varies from 6.8 Ra in harzburgites to 5.5 Ra in lherzolites and cumulates rocks, suggesting a progressive modification of an original MORB-like mantle signature via interaction with crustal-related components with 3He/4He and 4He/40Ar* signature similar to magmatic gaseous emissions. The mineral phase major element distribution, together with the systematic variations in FI composition, the positive correlation between Al-enrichment in pyroxene and equilibration temperatures, and the concomitant Rc/Ra decrease at increasing temperature, suggest that the SCLM beneath Siebengebirge represented the German lithosphere prior to the massive infiltration of melts/fluids belonging to the Quaternary Eifel volcanism. On the other hand, West Eifel xenoliths bear witness of multiple heterogeneous metasomatism/refertilization events that took place in the German SCLM between ~6 and ~0.5 Ma. According to Ne and Ar isotope systematics, the FI composition in the studied xenoliths can be explained by mixing between recycled air and a MORB-like mantle, being irreconcilable with the presence of a lower mantle plume beneath the Central European Volcanic Province.

The investigation of noble gases (He, Ne, Ar) and CO2 in fluid inclusions (FI) of mantle-derived rocks from the Sub Continental Lithospheric Mantle (SCLM) is crucial for constraining its geochemical features and evolution as well as the volatiles cycle, and for better evaluating the information arising from the study and monitoring of volcanic and geothermal gases. Eastern Transylvanian Basin in Romania is one of the places in Central-Eastern Europe where mantle xenoliths are brought to the surface by alkaline magmatism, offering the opportunity for applying the above-mentioned approach. Moreover, this locality is one of the few places on Earth where alkaline eruptions occurred contemporaneously with calc-alkaline activity, thus being a promising area for the investigation of subduction influence on the magma sources and volatiles composition.In this work, we studied petrography, mineral chemistry and noble gases in FI of mantle xenoliths found in Perşani Mts. alkaline volcanic products. Our findings reveal that the local mantle recorded two main events. The first was a pervasive, complete re-fertilization of a previously depleted mantle by a calc-alkaline subduction-related melt, causing the formation of very fertile, amphibole-bearing lithotypes. Fluids involved in this process and trapped in olivine, opx and cpx, show 4He/40Ar* ratios up to 1.2 and among the most radiogenic 3He/4He values of the European mantle (5.8 ± 0.2 Ra), reflecting the recycling of crustal material in the local lithosphere. The second event is related to a later interaction with an alkaline metasomatic agent similar to the host basalts, that caused slight LREE enrichment in pyroxenes and crystallization of disseminated amphiboles, with FI showing 4He/40Ar* and 3He/4He values up to 2.5 and 6.6 Ra, respectively, more typical of magmatic fluids.Although volcanic activity in the Perşani Mts. is now extinct, strong CO2 degassing (8.7 × 103 t/y) in the neighbouring Ciomadul volcanic area may indicate that magma is still present at depth (Kis et al., 2017; Laumonier et al., 2019). The gas manifestations present from Ciomadul area are the closest to the outcrops containing mantle xenoliths for comparison of the noble gas composition in FI. 3He/4He values from Stinky Cave (Puturosul), Doboşeni and Balvanyos are up to 3.2, 4.4 and 4.5 Ra, respectively, indicating the presence of a cooling magma (Vaselli et al., 2002 and references therein). In the same area and more recently, Kis et al. (2019) measured 3He/4He ratios up to 3.1 Ra, arguing that these values indicate a mantle lithosphere strongly contaminated by subduction-related fluids and post-metasomatic ingrowth of radiogenic 4He. Our findings consider more likely that magmatic gases from Ciomadul volcano are not representative of the local mantle but are being released from a cooling and aging magma that resides within the crust. The Mid-Triassic emplacement of shoshonitic magmas at the NE margin of the Adria plate in concomitance with extensional/transtensional tectonics is one of the most intriguing and peculiar aspects typifying the geodynamic evolution of the Western Tethyan realm. Although often hypothesized, the link between this magmatic event and the metasomatised Southern Alps Sub-Continental Lithospheric Mantle (SCLM) has never been constrained.Geochemical and petrological analyses of lavas, dykes and ultramafic cumulates belonging to the shoshonitic magmatism of the Dolomites, coupled with pre-existing data on peridotite massifs (i.e. Finero, Balmuccia, Baldissero), were used to reconstruct the evolution of the Southern Alps SCLM between Carboniferous and Triassic. According to our model, a metasomatised amphibole + phlogopite-bearing spinel lherzolite, similar to the Finero phlogopite peridotite and likely generated by interaction between a depleted mantle and slab-derived components during the Variscan subduction, was able to produce magmas with orogenic-like affinity during Mid-Triassic. In this context, partial melting degrees of ca. 5-7% were required for producing primitive SiO2-saturated to -undersaturated melts with shoshonitic affinity (87Sr/86Sri = 0.7032-0.7058; 143Nd/144Ndi = 0.51219-0.51235; Mg #~ 70; ~1.1 wt% H2O). As testified by the H2O content in mineral phases from the Finero phlogopite peridotite (Tommasi et al., 2017), the modelled Mid-Triassic fertile lithospheric mantle could have been able to preserve a significant enrichment and volatile content (600-800 ppm H2O) for more than 50 Ma, i.e. since the Variscan subduction-related metasomatism. During the Mid-Triassic partial melting event, the modelled Finero-like mantle exhausted the subduction-related signature inherited during the Variscan subduction. The PT conditions and position of different groups of eclogites in the subcratonic lithospheric mantle (SCLM) worldwide has been established using clinopyroxene Jd-Di thermobarometry for different cratons and kimberlite localities. Beneath Siberia, Fe-eclogites found within the 3.0-4.0 GPa and were probably formed in Early Archean times forming the base of the lithosphere. In the Middle and Late Archean, eclogites were melted during subduction creating restite and cumulates from partial melts traced ascending channels.High-Mg eclogites (partial melts or arc cumulates) are related to low-T geotherms. Melt-metasomatized eclogites trace a high-T geotherm and are often close to the middle part of the mantle lithosphere. Abundant eclogitic diamond inclusions from Siberia also mostly belong to the middle part of the lithosphere. Ca-rich eclogites from Precambrian kimberlites of India are located in the middle lithospheric mantle whereas those entrained in Phanerozoic magmas are derived from the lithosphere base. In the Wyoming craton, kimberlites carry eclogite xenoliths captured from the 4.0-2.5 GPa interval. In mantle lithosphere sampled by Proterozoic kimberlites, Ca-rich eclogites and grospydites occur in the 4.0-5.0 GPa interval. South Africa HT eclogite and diamond inclusions from the Proterozoic Premier kimberlites are derived from the deeper part of the mantle lithosphere and trace a high-T geotherm at depths of 7.0-4.0 GPa showing an increase in Fe upwards in the mantle section. Similar trends are common beneath the Catoca cluster kimberlites in Angola.Mantle eclogites have clinopyroxenes and garnet trace element patterns with opposite inclinations determined by KDs with melts. Flatter and bell-like REE patterns with Eu anomalies? HFSE troughs and U, Pb peaks are common for MORB-type basaltic eclogites. High-Mg eclogites show less fractionated incompatible element patterns. LILE-enrichments and HFSE troughs are typical for kyanite-bearing eclogites. Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) is located in the western part of equatorial Africa and consists of volcanoes which were active from Eocene to recent, stretching ca. 1700 km from the Atlantic in the SW into the African continent in the NE. The continental part of the CVL is located on the Neoproterozoic Central African Orogenic Belt and is situated between the Congo craton and Sahara/Western Africa craton. Mantle peridotite xenoliths which occur locally in lavas of the CVL come from the spinel facies only, suggesting a relatively shallow lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB). This is supported by seismic studies, showing the LAB at 90-100 km.In order to understand better the evolution of the lithospheric mantle beneath the CVL, we studied xenolith suite (16 xenoliths) from Befang in the Oku Massif (Tedonkenfack et al., submitted). The Befang xenoliths are almost entirely lherzolites which have cataclastic to weakly porphyroclastic texture. Harzburgites and websterites occur subordinately. Spinel is interstitial and has amoeboidal shape. The studied peridotites (14 lherzolites, 1 harzburgite) consist of minerals with almost constant composition (olivine Fo88.7-90.3, orthopyroxene Al 0.17-0.19 atoms per formula unit (a pfu), clinopyroxene Al 0.28-0.30 a pfu, spinel Cr# dominantly 0.09-0.11). Spinel of Cr# 0.15 occurs in one of the lherzolites, whereas that occurring in harzburgite has Cr# 0.19. Clinopyroxene REE patterns are similar to those of Depleted MORB Mantle (DMM) except LREEs, which vary from depleted to enriched. The A-type olivine fabric occurs in the EBSD-studied subset of 8 samples (one harzburgite and 7 lherzolites). Orthopyroxene shows deformation consistent with olivine. The fabric of LREE-enriched clinopyroxene is equivalent to those of orthopyroxene and olivine, whereas spinel and LREE-depleted clinopyroxene are oriented independently of the fabric of host rock.These data, thermometry, phase relationships and phase equilibria diagrams suggest that the Befang mantle section was refertilised by MORB-like melt at pressures 1.0-1.4 GPa and temperatures slightly above 1200 – 1275 ºC. The olivine-orthopyroxene framework and LREE-enriched clinopyroxene preserve the fabric of protolith. On the other hand, the LREE-depleted clinopyroxene shows discordant orientation relative to olivine-orthopyroxene protolith framework, and amoeboidal spinel crystallized from the melt. The major element and REEs composition of pyroxenes occurring in the Befang peridotites indicate chemical reequilibration at temperatures 930 – 1000 ºC. Trace element modeling shows that websterites can be linked to Cenozoic volcanism. We speculate that they form veins in the lithospheric mantle. In Central Evia island (Aegean-Greece) serpentinized ultramafic rocks appear as elongated thrust sheets or in the form of olistostromes incorporated within Maestrichtian-Paleocene flysch. These are crosscut by well-developed rodingite dykes that were derived from four main protoliths that include i) Boninites, ii) Island-arc Tholeiitic Basalts and Gabbros, iii) Alkaline basalts and iv) Calc-alkaline basalts. They mainly comprise of minerals that include (hydro)garnet + chlorite + clinopyroxene ± vesuvianite. Accessory minerals include spinel ± calcite ± prehnite ± amphibole ± orthopyroxene ± olivine ± quartz ± opaque Fe-Ti oxides. Rodingites that were formed at the expense of boninites and island-arc tholeiitic rocks were likely formed within a single rodingitization stage, since garnet is mainly grossular-rich and relict primary clinopyroxene has been preserved. The rodingitization of the alkaline and calc-alkaline basalts seems to have occurred as a multi-stage metasomatic process that occurred during the exhumation of the mafic-ultramafic mantle wedge complex. This resulted in the development of late-stage andradite, vesuvianite and in some cases of chlorite during derodingitization. In this case, successive reaction zones with variability in the participating mineral phases were developed. Geochemical results reveal remarkable rare earth element (REE) enrichments, especially in the inner zones, likely being the result of successive diffusion and element transfer. Few rodingites are characterized as calcite-bearing, whose stable 13C-18O isotopic data points to the restricted involvement of late-stage mixed hydrothermal and seawater-related carbonation processes.

The possibility of constraining the composition and evolution of specific portions of the Sub-Continental Lithospheric Mantle (SCLM) by means of an integrated study of petrography, mineral chemistry, and concentrations of volatiles in fluid inclusions (FI) is a novel approach that can provide clues on the recycling of volatiles within the lithosphere. This approach is even more important in active or dormant volcanic areas, where the signature of the gaseous emissions at the surface can be that of the underlying lithospheric mantle domains. In this respect, the ultramafic xenoliths brought to the surface in West Eifel (~0.5–0.01 Ma) and Siebengebirge (~30–6 Ma) volcanic fields (Germany) are ideal targets, as they provide direct information on one of the most intriguing portions of SCLM beneath the Central European Volcanic Province (CEVP). Five distinct populations from these localities were investigated using petrographic observations, mineral phase analyses and determination of He, Ne, Ar and CO2 contents in olivine-, orthopyroxene-, and clinopyroxene-hosted FI. The most refractory Siebengebirge rocks have highly forsteritic olivine, high-Mg#, low-Al pyroxene, and spinel with high Cr#, reflecting high extents (up to 30%) of melt extraction. In contrast, xenoliths from West Eifel are modally and compositionally heterogeneous, as indicated by the large forsterite range of olivine (Fo83–92), the Cr# range of spinel (0.1–0.6), and the variable Al and Ti contents of pyroxene. Equilibration temperatures vary from 870 °C to 1070 °C in Siebengebirge, and from ⁓900 °C to ⁓1190 °C in West Eifel xenoliths, at oxygen fugacity values generally between −0.5 and + 1.3 ΔlogƒO2 [FMQ]. In both areas, the FI composition was dominated by CO2, with clinopyroxene, and most of the orthopyroxene had the highest concentrations of volatiles, while olivine was gas-poor. The noble gas and CO2 distributions suggest that olivine is representative of a residual mantle that experienced one or more melt extraction episodes. The 3He/4He ratio corrected for air contamination (Rc/Ra values) varied from 6.8 Ra in harzburgitic lithotypes to 5.5 Ra in lherzolites and cumulate rocks, indicating that the original MORB-like mantle signature was progressively modified by interaction with crustal-related components and melts having 3He/4He and 4He/40Ar* values consistent with those published for magmatic gaseous emissions. The Ne and Ar isotope systematics indicated that most of the data were consistent with mixing between a recycled atmospheric component and a MORB-like mantle, which does not necessarily require the involvement of a lower mantle plume beneath this portion of the CEVP. The major element distribution in mineral phases from West Eifel and Siebengebirge, together with the systematic variations in FI composition, the positive correlation between Al enrichment in pyroxene and equilibration temperatures, and the concomitant Rc/Ra decrease with increasing temperature, suggest that the SCLM beneath Siebengebirge represented the Variscan lithosphere in CEVP prior to the massive infiltration of melts/fluids belonging to the Quaternary Eifel volcanism. In contrast, West Eifel xenoliths reflect multiple heterogeneous metasomatism/refertilisation events that took place in the regional SCLM between ~6 and ~ 0.5 Ma.

The origin and evolution of subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) are important issues of Earth’s chemical and physical evolution. Here, we report detailed textural and chemical analyses on a mantle xenolith suite from Befang (Oku Volcanic Group, Cameroon Volcanic Line), which represents a major tectono-magmatic structure of the African plate. The samples are sourced from spinel-facies mantle and are dominated by lherzolites. Their texture is cataclastic to porphyroclastic, and foliation defined by grain-size variation and alignment of spinel occurs in part of peridotites. Spinel is interstitial and has amoeboidal shape. Clinopyroxene REE patterns are similar to those of Depleted MORB Mantle (DMM) except LREEs, which vary from depleted to enriched. The A-type olivine fabric occurs in the subset of one harzburgite and 7 lherzolites studied by EBSD. Orthopyroxene shows deformation consistent with olivine. The fabric of LREE-enriched clinopyroxene is equivalent to those of orthopyroxene and olivine, whereas spinel and LREE-depleted clinopyroxene are oriented independently of host rock fabric. The textural, chemical and thermobarometric constraints indicate that the Befang mantle section was refertilised by MORB-like melt at pressures of 1.0–1.4 GPa and temperatures slightly above 1200–1275 °C. The olivine-orthopyroxene framework and LREE-enriched clinopyroxene preserve the protolith fabric. In contrast, the LREE-depleted clinopyroxene, showing discordant deformation relative to the olivine-orthopyroxene protolith framework, and amoeboidal spinel crystallized from the infiltrating melt. The major element and REEs composition of minerals forming the Befang peridotites indicate subsequent reequilibration at temperatures 930–1000 °C. This was followed by the formation of websterite veins in the lithospheric mantle, which can be linked to Cenozoic volcanism in the Cameroon Volcanic Line that also brought the xenoliths to the surface. International audience; Clinopyroxene megacrysts occurring in Cenozoic mafic alkaline volcanic rocks from the northern margin of the Bohemian Massif (SW Poland, SE Germany) could be subdivided by colour and Mg# (Mg/(Mg + Fetot)) in three groups. Megacryst with the highest Mg# = 90.0-91.5 ("high Mg#", HMg#) is transparent and strongly Light Rare Earth Element (LREE) depleted and contains abundant orthopyroxene lamellae. The clinopyroxene megacrysts with "medium Mg#" (MMg#) values (76.8-83.4) are transparent to light grey and are all LREE-enriched. The group with the lowest Mg# (LMg#; 62.2-74.6) is intensively coloured (from grey to green) and may enclose apatite, Ti-magnetite or pseudomorphs after amphibole. The "low Mg#" (LMg#) clinopyroxenes are LREE-enriched, and some display positive Zr-Hf anomalies. The single HMg# megacryst records pressures ~1GPa and temperature of 1280 °C, pointing to its mantle origin. It is the first megacryst described in European lavas and possibly worldwide, which shows affinity to Depleted MORB Mantle (DMM). The MMg# megacrysts formed from fractionating mafic magmas at variable pressures and temperatures - from those corresponding to mantle depths (>1 GPa, 1230-1350 °C) to lower/middle crustal values (0.5-0.9 GPa, 1120-1150 °C). The parental melts for this group are isotopically related to the Cenozic volcanic rocks from the study area. The LMg# megacrysts crystallized from strongly alkaline melts, mostly at lower- to middle-crustal pressures (0.4-1.0 GPa). Their parental melts were also related to Cenozoic volcanism, but their strongly evolved nature resulted in local, but significant enrichment in Zr and Hf. The LMg# megacrysts from three localities in Poland are the first evidence of strongly alkaline magmatism in the north-easternmost part of Cenozoic European Volcanic Province.

Petrographic observations as well as new and published mineral major and trace element compositions, in part complemented by electron backscatter diffraction, evidence that representative mantle xenolith suites from several Cenozoic basalt locations in the European Variscan orogen can be grouped into three main types. Each type is derived from parts of the sub-continental lithospheric mantle which have experienced a different geological history. The oldest type, referred to as orogenic mantle, is dominated by strongly depleted harzburgites, which represent a fossil Variscan mantle wedge with slices of mantle of continental and oceanic plates attached to it during collision. This mantle lithosphere has been overprinted by Cenozoic carbonated alkali basalt melts, and clinopyroxene, if present, is LREE-enriched and re-introduced. This type of mantle is exemplified by xenoliths from Lower Silesia (Poland) and the northern Massif Central (France). The second type of lithospheric mantle lies beneath parts of the Variscan orogen which experienced Cenozoic rifting. This mantle is dominated by harzburgites and lherzolites formed by multiple episodes of reactive percolation of basaltic melts generated at various stages of continental rifting. The clinopyroxene REE patterns range from flat to LREE-enriched. The xenoliths from Vogelsberg (Germany) are an example of such a lithospheric mantle. The third mantle type consists of lherzolites which originated by refertilization of a harzburgitic protolith by melts derived from upwelled asthenosphere. Lherzolites contain primary clinopyroxene characterized by LREE-depleted-patterns. The xenoliths from south Massif Central (France) are an example of that third type. The xenoliths in Cenozoic basalts considered so far show that the mantle root of the Variscan orogen in Central Europe consists of various domains which in part conserve their characteristics from the time of the Variscan collision, and in part are overprinted by metasomatism caused by late-orogenic asthenosphere upwelling or by Cenozoic rifting. The metasomatically affected domains are decoupled from the Variscan structure of the orogen.

Mt. Etna is one of the most protrusive features of the eastern coastline of Sicily, Italy. As Europe’s most active volcano it has been studied extensively to reveal its geodynamic setting, plumbing system and due to the constant monitoring of the volcano edifice the prediction of the risk future events is sophisticated at Mt. Etna. The eruptive activity has been divided according to the age into 6 stages: (1) “Tholeiitic Stage”, was active between 600-320 ka ago, (2) the “Timpe Stage” between 220 and 110 ka ago, (3) the “Ancient Alcaline Volcanism” between 110 and 65 ka ago and (4) the “Ellittico Stage” between 57 and 15 ka ago (5) the “Mongibello Stage” from 15 ka ago until 1971 and (6) the “post -1971 Stage” active since 1971 (Casetta et al., 2019). The lava propagating through the Etnean plumbing system generated a complex network consisting of sills and dykes responsible for the formation of the summit craters and a plethora of eccentric cones that cover the flanks of the volcano. We studied using whole rock and mineral analyses the lavas from three eccentric cones (Monte Maletto, Monte Nuovo and Monte Frumento) and the 2001 eruption on the south flank from the main crater. All lavas are characterized by trachytic texture with variable modal composition of olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase phenocrysts. The Monte Maletto whole rock composition with an Mg# ranging between 56-58 and a CaO content of 12.0 wt% are the most primitive lavas among the sampled outcrops whereas the Monte Frumento lavas are the most evolved since the Mg# ranges from 43 to 46 and the CaO content from 9.5 to 10.8 wt%. Both, Monte Nuovo and 2001 eruption are more evolved than the Monte Maletto since they have Mg# ~ 50 and 51.5-52.9 respectively. The CaO concentration in both outcrops is relatively constant ranging from 9.8 to 10.7 wt%. The olivine compositions follow the same trend as their whole rocks. The most MgO-rich olivine (Fo=87.5 %) found in the Monte Maletto lavas. This olivine is of magmatic origin and cannot be considered as mantle derived xenocryst since the NiO content is low (NiO=0.16 wt%) and the CaO-content high (CaO=0.22 wt%). The most evolved lavas from Monte Frumente have the lowest Fo-content (Fo=64-68 %). Olivine from both, Monte Nuovo and 2001 eruption have a characteristic inverse zonation with Fo-content in the core ranging from 69.9 to 75 and in the rim from 78.2 to 81.7 respectively. In conclusion, the Monte Maletto lavas represent the most primitive magma formed at high temperatures (skeletal growing of the olivine) and the Monte Frumento lavas the most evolved magma. The Monte Nuovo and 2001 eruption experienced magma mixing as inferred from the olivine inverse zonation. Both, Monti Rossi and the 2002/2003 lava flow are more evolved than the Monte Spagnolo since they have Mg# ~ 50 and 49-49.3 respectively. The CaO concentration in both outcrops is relatively constant ranging around 10.5 wt%.The olivine compositions follow the same trend as their whole rocks. The most MgO-rich olivine (Fo=88.9 %) was found in the Monte Spagnolo lavas. This olivine is of magmatic origin and cannot be considered as mantle derived xenocryst since the NiO content is low (NiO=0.17 – 0.2 wt%) and the CaO-content high (CaO=0.24 – 0.26 wt%). The most evolved lavas from Monte De Fiore have the lowest Fo-content (Fo=75 - 78 %). Olivine from all samples has a characteristic inverse zonation with, at Monti Rossi and 2002/2003 lava flow, Fo-content in the core ranging from 69% to 75% and in the rim from 77% to 80% respectively.In conclusion, the studied eccentric cones show extensive magma mixing as can be inferred from the olivine inverse zoning. Permo-Carboniferous mafic alkaline volcanism in Scotland sampled deep lithosphere beneath Lower Paleozoic basement. In the eastern part of Midland Valley terrane (central Scotland, Fife peninsula) volcanic and volcanoclastic rocks carry (among others) ultramafic xenoliths. The peridotite xenoliths give an insight into structure and composition of lithospheric mantle at the time of volcanic activity.We studied spinel lherzolites and wehrlites, occurring as usually Chemical composition of minerals is related to texture of the rock. Olivine forming protogranular lherzolites has Fo=88.35-88.80 and is Ca-poor (Composition of minerals forming porphyroclastic lherzolites and wehrlites is strongly heterogeneous and varies in the same ranges. Olivine and spinel of some rare porphyroclastic lherzolites plot within OSMA (OlFo=88.50-88.80, Spl#Cr=0.12-0.20), but in majority of samples olivine composition grades toward lower forsterite contents (Fo=78.33-89.78) while Cr# is higher in spinel (Cr#=0.72-0.53) which locate them outside OSMA. Olivine has Ca content up to 2000 ppm. Orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene are chemically heterogeneous in terms of Mg# (0.82-0.89 and 0.81-0.93, respectively) and Al content (0.06-0.17 and 0.10-0.33 a.p.f.u., respectively). Clinopyroxene in porphyroclastic lherzolites and wehrlites has REE-enriched pattern and is enriched in Th and U and depleted in Nb and Ta.The clinopyroxene-orthopyroxene equilibrium temperatures for the protogranular lherzolites are usually ~980°C, only single sample gave temperature ~900°C (Brey and Köhler, 1991, JoP). Pyroxenes in porphyroclastic lherzolites and wehrlites are not equilibrated, but the elevated Ca content in olivine suggests that those rocks were affected by heating.The protogranular lherzolites from Fife are restites after relatively low (1-7%) degrees of partial melting and were further affected by cryptic metasomatism. Bonadiman et al. (2008, Geol. Soc.) suggested that the enrichment in Th and U may result from reaction with subduction-related melt(s), possibly related in central Scotland with Caledonian closure of Iapetus ocean. Composition of clinopyroxene from the most orthopyroxene-rich porphyroclastic lherzolites resembles that of clinopyroxene from protogranular rocks, but as the modal composition grades toward wehrlites, the clinopyroxene becomes more variable in composition but also LREE-enriched. We suggest, that the chemical and textural paths from protogranular to equigranular samples record different stages of wehrlitization process triggered by infiltration of LREE-enriched mafic melt(s).This study was possible thanks to project NCN UMO-2016/23/B/ST10/01905 from the Polish National Centre for Science and Polish-Austrian project WTZ PL 08/2018 .

The Cenozoic volcanic field of Vogelsberg (part of CEVP in Central Germany) is located at the northern extension of the Upper Rhine Graben. Three Variscan basement units underlie Vogelsberg from NW to SE: the Rheno-Hercynian Zone, the Northern Phyllite Zone and the Mid-German Crystalline High. Xenoliths from the Breitenborn basanite sample lithospheric mantle (LM) beneath the Mid-German Crystalline High.The Breitenborn suite comprises xenoliths of 3-7.5 cm in diameter: clinopyroxene-poor spinel lherzolites, spinel harzburgites and clinopyroxenites. Peridotites exhibit different degrees of deformation: porphyroclastic textures, foliation development and grain size reduction. Mineral components are chemically homogenous at the grain and xenolith scale. Forsterite content (Fo) in olivine ranges between 89.8 and 91.5% with exception of Fo ~89.0% in one xenolith. Orthopyroxene (opx) is characterized by Mg# of 0.900-0.923 and 0.06-0.18 atoms of Al pfu, whereas clinopyroxene (cpx) by Mg# of 0.894-0.931 and 0.11-0.23 atoms of Al pfu. Spinel Cr# ranges from 0.18 to 0.45. Clinopyroxenites exhibit protogranular textures with no deformation. They are significantly less magnesian (cpx Mg# 0.834-0.863) and more aluminous (0.25-0.31 atoms of Al pfu) than peridotites.Peridotite cpx REE patterns show different degree of enrichment in LREE, except two xenoliths being strongly depleted in LREE. Opx from those two xenoliths exhibits patterns steeply depleted from HREE to LREE. The remaining opx shows mild depletion in LREE relative to HREE or slight LREE enrichment.Temperatures calculated using REE content (TREE) [1] range between 1030 and 1130°C for most of the xenoliths and show that pyroxenes are in REE equilibrium. Exceptions are LREE-depleted xenoliths which have 940-975°C and exhibit no LREE equilibrium. Temperatures calculated on the basis of pyroxene major element contents (TBKN) [2] are ~40-140°C lower than TREE.During Cenozoic rifting which formed the Upper Rhine Graben, a diversity of melts interacted with the LM beneath Vogelsberg. LREE-enriched cpx and opx patterns suggest metasomatic alteration of LM by alkaline melts, which is typical of other studied sites in the area. A calculated hypothetical melt in equilibrium with clinopyroxenite cpx patterns resembles those of basanites and alkaline basalts occurring in Vogelsberg, which were possibly involved in the alkaline metasomatism of the LM. Varying discrepancy between TREE and TBKN indicate that the xenoliths experienced cooling after melt metasomatism of the LM, which was not followed by recrystallisation. Different degrees of LREE enrichment and gradual changes in major element compositions of peridotite minerals indicate the chromatographic character of the alkaline metasomatism. Strongly LREE-depleted cpx and opx patterns probably are effects of metasomatism by melts derived from depleted MORB mantle, which are typical products of advanced melting in continental rifting environments. The northernmost part of Scotland – the Hebridean Terrane – is formed of Archean rocks originally being part of the Laurentian North Atlantic Craton. The geological history of the terrane is well recognised, however details of its internal structure remain unknown. The Eocene (Faithfull et al. 2012, JGS) Loch Roag monchiquite (Lewis Island) sampled deep-seated lithologies, providing insight on evolution and geological structure of the deeper lithosphere of the Hebridean terrane. The monchiquite comprises abundant xenoliths of ultramafic, mafic and felsic rocks. The peridotitic xenoliths represent pieces of Archean mantle underlying marginal parts of the North Atlantic Craton, whereas the origin of non-peridotitic lithologies is uncertain.The studied suite of samples comprises two groups: 1) “xenoliths” of diorites (plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, apatite, opaques) and biotite clinopyroxenites (+apatite), 2) “megacrysts” of clinopyroxene and K-feldspar, both with inclusions of clinopyroxene, biotite and apatite. Megacrysts of alkali-rich feldspar associated with corundum and HFSE-bearing minerals, and composite xenoliths formed of pyroxenite and K-feldspar-rich lithology have also been described from this locality (Menzies et al., 1986, Geol. Soc. Australia Spec. Pub.; Upton et al., 2009, Mineral. Mag.).We interpret the “xenoliths” as products of crystallization of fractionated mafic melt(s). The primary character of Sr isotopic ratios in plagioclase (87Sr/86Sr 87Sr/86Sr in feldspar >0.704).Trace element composition, similar Sr isotopic ratios of minerals and textural features of “xenoliths” and “megacrysts” groups suggest their close genetic relationship. This geochemical resemblance may reflect crystallisation from primarily similar melt(s) and source regions affected by similar metasomatism. Petrographic features observed in rocks described by Upton et al., (2009) imply that the parental magma of megacrysts might have intruded the rocks forming the xenoliths group. Moreover, the Rb-Sr ages of xenoliths (Der-Chuen et al., 1993, GCA) indicate crystallisation during (or shortly after) Caledonian orogeny. Preliminary age relationship between groups will be determined by on-going Rb-Sr dating of megacrysts.Xenoliths similar to diorites from Loch Roag were reported by Badenszki et al. (2019, JoP) from the Midland Valley terrane (“metadiorites” of protolith ages ca. 415 Ma). They were interpreted as products of alkaline syn-/post-collisional Caledonian magmatism. Our study shows that non-peridotitic xenoliths from Loch Roag dyke might represent a record of similar (or the same) magmatism in the northernmost, “Laurentian” part of Scotland. This study presents the first report of such Caledonian magmatism record within the Hebridean Terrane.Founded by Polish National Science Centre grant no. Triassic volcanism developed during the rifting stage of Gondwana, with subsequent formation and development of the Tethyan oceanic basin as the Pangaea (Apulia promontory) and Pelagonia continents spread apart. Volcanic rocks formed from this activity outcrop over all mainland Greece, comprising of trachybasalts and basaltic trachyandesites. Relatively immobile to the effects of alteration processes major and trace element abundances classify the volcanics into OIB and E-MORB lavas. They have been distinguished based upon their: i) LREE contents, ii) silica-saturation index, iii) Zr/Nb and Nb/Y ratio values; iv) Th, U, and Ta contents v) geotectonic discrimination diagrams. Their geochemistry indicates that most rocks were affected by moderate to extensive differentiation processes, mostly expressed by clinopyroxene fractionation. Some of the OIB and E-MORB volcanics are considered as being primitive undersaturated, displaying relatively low SiO2 and S.I. index values and also high Mg# and CaO/Al2O3 ratios.Calculated average mantle potential temperatures are comparable (1410 ˚C OIB; 1370 ˚C E-MORB), with melt fractions estimated at 3-5% for primary OIB magmas and 6-8%for primary E-MORB magmas. An asthenospheric origin is inferred for the OIB lavas, with melting in the garnet stability field (75-95 km; 2.5-3.0 GPa), whereas E-MORB parent magmas were generated with shallower melting processes within the garnet/spinel (transitional) stability field (55-70 km; 1.8-2.2 GPa). Lithospheric attenuation and extension, followed by subsequent asthenospheric upwelling of the mantle was enhanced due to lithospheric thinning as rifting progressed. The rather high calculated partial melting degrees and the observed relatively thick lava formations account for fast-spreading rift settings, consistent with the opening of the Tethys during the Triassic. Temperature results indicate that the Hellenic Triassic rift-related magmas were generated from mantle at ambient temperature, precluding a mantle plume-based scenario or of thermal anomalies.

The Ciomadul in eastern-central Europe is a high-K dacitic volcanic complex characterized by long quiescence (several 10’s of kyr) periods between eruptions and a long-standing (over several 100’s of kyr) magmatic plumbing system. Following intermittent lava dome extrusions from 1 Ma to 360 ka, a more intense eruption stage occurred between 160 ka and 30 ka with initial lava dome building period followed by dominantly explosive eruptions. The volcano has been again in a long quiescence stage since 30 ka, although results of geophysical studies suggest presence of a subvolcanic magma body with significant melt fraction. In order to constrain better the rejuvenation mechanism of such long-dormant volcanic complex, a more thorough understanding of the nature and dynamics of the magmatic plumbing system and the reason of eruption triggers is required. In spite of the homogeneous dacitic bulk rock composition and similar mineral assemblage, each eruption product shows subtle differences in mineral-scale features. Here, we present examples showing how basaltic magma played a role in the genesis of dacite as well as triggered eruption in a timescale of days to weeks.The Ciomadul dacites are crystal rich and contain plagioclase, amphibole and biotite as main phenocrysts in addition to accessory phases of apatite, titanite and zircon. Several dacitic lava dome rocks formed between 90 and 160 ka in Ciomadul contain also high-Mg minerals such as olivine, clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene. Cr-spinel inclusions occur in olivine, orthopyroxene and also in high-Al amphiboles. Textures and the high Mg-numbers (0.85-0.91) of these mineral phases suggest that they can be considered as antecrysts with magmatic origin having crystallised from primitive mafic magmas, which were involved in the evolution of the subvolcanic magma storage system. Zoning pattern and trace element content of plagioclases and amphiboles clearly show interaction between dacitic and basaltic magmas. In addition, these high-Mg minerals allow us to have an insight into the origin of the primary magmas as well as the dynamics of the mafic magma body stalled at the crust-mantle boundary.The compositions of the Cr-spinel inclusions significantly differ from those of the spinels in the 600-1200 ka alkaline basalts of the nearby Perşani Volcanic Field and their high Cr-numbers indicate a depleted mantle source for the parental magma. Such Cr-rich spinels are common in high-K magmas originated in metasomatized lithospheric mantle with depleted, harzburgitic lithology. Compositional zoning of clinopyroxenes indicates several recharge events by high-Mg and high-Cr basaltic magmas. Mafic magma batches repeatedly ascended and emplaced below the upper crustal felsic crystal mush and formed a dynamic interface between these two magmas. The mafic components remained in plastic state allowing thorough mixing of the mafic and felsic mineral cargos during turbulent convective magma stirring, whereas farther from this interface, remelting of the crystal mush occurred due to reheating and volatile transfer into the interstitial melt. Migration of strategic metals through the lithospheric mantle can be tracked by sulfides in mantle xenoliths. Cenozoic mafic volcanic rocks from the SW Poland (Lower Silesia, Bohemian Massif) host a variety of subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) xenoliths. To understand metal migration in the SCLM we studied metal budget of peridotites from the Wilcza Góra basanite and their metasomatic history.The Wilcza Góra xenoliths are especially appropriate to study metasomatic processes as they consist of 1) peridotites with OlFo=89.1-91.5 representing depleted mantle (group A); 2) peridotites with OlFo=84.2-89.2 representing melt-metasomatized mantle (group B), as well as 3) hornblende-clinopyroxenites and websterites with OlFo=77.2-82.5 representing former melt channels (group C; Matusiak-Małek et al., 2017). The inherent sulfides are either interstitial or enclosed in the silicates. High-temperature exsolutions of pyrrhotite (Po), pentlandite (Pn) and chalcopyrite (Ccp) indicate magmatic origin of the sulfides.The three peridotitic groups differ by sulfide mode and composition. The sulfide modes are enhanced in group C (0.022-0.963 vol.‰) and group B (55-74Ccp1-2Pn24-44 in group A, Po67-85Ccp1-6Pn14-33, in group B and Po80-97Ccp1-7Pn2-20 in group C) and major element chemical composition. Ni/(Ni+Fe) of pentlandite is the lowest in group C (~0.25) and the highest in group A (0.54-0.61). Cu/(Cu+Fe) of chalcopyrite is 0.32-0.49 in group C contrasting to~0.50 in groups A and B. The sulfide-rich xenoliths of group C indicate an important role of pyroxenitic veins in transporting Fe-Cu-S-rich melts from the upper mantle to the crust. However, the moderately enhanced sulfide modes in melt-mantle reaction zones represented by xenoliths of group B demonstrate that the upper continental mantle is refertilized with these melts during their ascent. Hence, significant portion of S and metals remains in the mantle never reaching the crust, as has been previously observed in the oceanic lithosphere (Ciazela et al., 2018). Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) is a ca. 1600 km long Cenozoic volcanic chain which crosses the boundary between ocean and continent in West Africa. Its origin, as well as the nature and age of the underlying continental lithospheric mantle (CLM), is still a matter of debate. Some of the CVL lavas contain peridotite xenoliths that can provide data elucidating the role of the CLM in the sustained magma generation along the line. In this abstract we describe xenolith suite from the Befang pyroclastic cone (< 1Ma) in the Oku Massif in the continental part of CVL, consisting of 14 spinel lherzolites, one spinel harzburgite and one websterite. The xenoliths are between 3 and 21 cm in diameter and have porphyroclastic to serial or equigranular texture, with porphyroclasts of olivine or orthopyroxene up to 9 mm in diameter. Some are weakly foliated. Olivine is Fo 88.6-90.4, contains 0.36 to 0.42 wt.% NiO and 180-750 ppm of Ca. Orthopyroxene (Mg# 0.89-0.91) contains 0.14 – 0.19 atoms of Al pfu, and clinopyroxene (Mg# 0.90-0.92) contains 0.24 – 0.31 atoms of Al pfu. The Cr# of lherzolite spinel is 0.09-0.15, in the harzburgitic one it is 0.18-0.19. Pyroxenes in all studied peridotites record a temperature range of 910 – 1010°C (Brey and Köhler 1990). Clinopyroxenes’ REE patterns are flat at HREE-MREE and make a spectrum from slightly LREE-depleted to slightly LREE-enriched (LaN/LuN from 0.08 to 2.65). The trace-element patterns are flat except well-defined negative Nb-Ta and positive Th-U anomalies. Orthopyroxenes’ REE patterns are variably depleted from HREE to LREE (LaN/LuN from 0.001 to 0.037). The REE pattern of clinopyroxene occurring in websterite exhibits enrichment from HREE towards LREE with hump in Sm/Nd, typical of silicate melt crystallization. The REE pattern of clinopyroxene The Befang lherzolites represent CLM metasomatised by melts produced by various, but generally low degrees of melting of DMM-like (Depleted MORB Mantle) source. Conversely, the harzburgite was formed by low degrees (few percent) of melting of DMM.Acknowledgements. The Othris region in Central Greece includes sub-oceanic crustal rocks of Middle-Late Triassic age that have undergone low to moderate degrees of metasomatic/metamorphic alteration processes. Alteration documented in these rocks includes rodingitization, serpentinization and carbonation in cumulate wehrlites, ultramafic lavas, mafic dykes and pillow-lavas. Wehrlites and ultramafic lavas are partially to completely serpentinized during ocean floor metamorphism. They were additionally affected by rodingitization, mostly expressed with formation of hydroandradites and hydrogrossulars, closely associated with the breakdown of primary phases of clinopyroxene and plagioclase. We estimate that rodingitization occurred within relatively mildly oxidizing physicochemical conditions, with an increased CO2/H2O ratio. More significant rodingitization affected mafic doleritic dykes that intrude wehrlites: this alteration occurred in parallel to serpentinization of hosting ultramafics via subsequent circulation of relatively alkaline and hydrous fluids. We have calculated that this occurred under low to moderate P-T conditions (180–320 °C, P ≈ 2–5 kbar). Circulation of Ca-rich fluids at shallower crustal levels was responsible for local carbonation phenomena, mostly affecting ultramafic and mafic pillow lavas.
