Low permeability, naturally fractured reservoirs such as coal seam gas (CSG, coalbed methane or CBM) and shale gas reservoirs generally require well stimulation to achieve economic production rates. Coupling hydraulic fracturing and micro-proppant or graded particle injections (GPI) can be a means to maximise hydrocarbon recovery from these tight, naturally fractured reservoirs, by maintaining or improving cleat or natural fracture conductivity. This paper presents a summary of the National Energy Resources Australia (NERA) project "Converting tight contingent CSG resources: Application of graded particle injection in CSG stimulation" - which assessed the application of micro-proppants, providing guidance on key considerations for GPI application to CSG reservoirs. Over the last decade, laboratory research and modelling have shown the benefits of the application of GPI to keep pre-existing natural fractures and induced fractures open during production of coal reservoirs with pressure dependent permeability (PDP). Laboratory studies, within this study, provide further insight on potential mechanisms and key factors, including proppant size and optimum concentration, which contribute to the success of a micro-proppant placement. Accompanying numerical modelling studies will be presented that describe the likely fluidized behaviour of micro-proppants (e.g., straining models, electrostatic effects, and ‘screen out’ prediction). This paper outlines the necessary reservoir characterization, treatment considerations, and key numerical modelling inputs necessary for the design, execution, and evaluation of GPI treatments, whether performed standalone or in conjunction with hydraulic fracturing treatments. It also provides insight on the practical application of GPI efficiently into fracturing operations, minimizing natural and hydraulic fracturing damage effects, thereby maximizing potential production enhancement for coals, shales and other tight, naturally fractured reservoirs exhibiting pressure-dependent permeability effects.

The paper presents laboratory study of kaolinite fines detachment from silica/glass substrate in the visualisation cell, which mimics clay release during colloidal and suspension flows in aquifers. The cell saturation by particles is performed until full stabilization during the attachment process; further, detachment of particles occurs during piecewise-constant increasing of flow velocity. The detachment data calculated from microscope images are compared with the forces and torques detaching the particles. Qualitative agreement between the modelling and laboratory data is observed.

Transport and detachment of colloidal particles with irregular shapes occur in geology, environmental, and water-resource engineering. We investigated the effect of shape and aspect ratio on the detachment of non-spherical microparticles attached to a plane substrate, in Couette linear shear flow, under favourable conditions. The detachment conditions were determined by the mechanical equilibrium of drag, lift, gravity and adhesion forces acting on the particle. Drag and lift were evaluated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), introducing the shape-dependent corrections into traditional formulae for spherical particles. The adhesive particle–surface force is determined by the Surface Element Integration (SEI) method, which also corrects the classical DLVO expression. The forces exerted on spheroids and cylinders can significantly differ from spheres and their detachment exhibit non-monotonic dependencies with aspect ratio. Direct visualisation experiments were performed by piecewise-constant change of flow velocity and the observed detachment were in good agreement with the mechanical-equilibrium based predictions.

Particle capture in porous media and the consequent permeability reduction occur in oilfields during water injection or produced water re-injection, migration of mobilized reservoir fines, and invasion of drilling and completion fluids into formations. Reliable modelling-based prediction of particle propagation in natural reservoirs is an essential step in the planning and design of waterflooding. The mathematical model for suspension-colloidal transport in natural reservoirs contains two empirical functions of retained particle concentration. The filtration function expresses the particle capture rate. The formation-damage function determines the permeability decline due to particle capture and retention. Previous works developed an inverse-problem solution to recover both functions from breakthrough concentration and the pressure drop. The present paper develops a new method that determines the filtration and formation-damage functions from pressure measurements only. The method uses pressure data at an intermediate point of the porous column (core), which supplements pressure measurements at the core inlet and outlet. The proposed method furnishes two retained-concentration functions for filtration and formation-damage. The method is validated by comparison with laboratory experiments. A high fit with the pressure data at three core points was observed. Moreover, the fitted model predicts the pressure measured at other core points with high precision.

Particle detachment during colloidal-suspension transport in porous media occurs in chemical and environmental engineering. Breach of the attached particles mechanical equilibrium conditions yields their mobilisation by rolling, sliding, or lifting. We introduced a novel phase diagram indicating the detachment regime for given transport conditions. The phase diagram structure follows from the mechanical equilibrium conditions. Seven series of laboratory tests in visualisation cell with various parameters have been conducted. Placing the observed detachment parameters on phase diagrams shows that rolling is the dominant detachment regime. A gradual detachment of particles was explained by a probabilistic distribution of the particle and surface parameters, and a novel method for the probabilistic distribution determination is developed. For the laboratory tests performed, correlating the critical velocity for particle mobilisation with asperity size allowed obtaining the asperity distribution on the substrate. The obtained distributions were in agreement with reported values of surface roughness on glass coverslips.

The filtration and the formation damage coefficients are the parameters in the mathematical models determining the degree of permeability decline during flow of colloidal suspensions in porous media. Measuring pressure in 3 points along the core allows simultaneous calculation of the filtration and the formation damage coefficients. We have calculated the combined standard uncertainties of the filtration and the formation damage coefficients. Application of the law of propagation of uncertainty to Darcy’s equation and the weighted least squares method to impedance index curves for the half- and the overall core resulted in the values of their slopes and intercepts, and the respective combined standard uncertainties. Combination of the values of these slopes into a transcendental equation and solving it analytically fully determined the filtration and formation damage coefficients with their relative combined standard uncertainties being significantly lower than those reported in the literature.

Migration of natural reservoir fines is one of the main causes of formation damage in oil and gas fields. Yet, fines migration can be employed for enhancing reservoir sweep and water production control. Permeability decline due to fine particles’ detachment from reservoir rocks, mobilisation, migration and straining has been widely reported in the petroleum industry since the 1960s and is being researched worldwide. The topic of colloidal-suspension flows with particle detachment is also of wide interest in environmental, chemical and civil engineering. The current work begins with a detailed introduction on laboratory and mathematical modelling of fines migration, along with new mathematical models and experimental results. Each of the next three sections explores a particular cause of fines mobilisation, migration and straining. Section 2 covers high flow velocity that causes particle detachment accompanied by consequent permeability decline. Section 3 covers low-salinity water injection, where the decreased electrostatic attraction leads to particle mobilisation. Section 4 covers the effect of high temperature on production rate and low-salinity water injection in geothermal reservoirs. We attribute the long permeability stabilisation period during coreflooding with fines migration, to slow fines rolling and sliding and to diffusive delay in particle mobilisation. We derive the analytical models for both phenomena. Laboratory fines-migration coreflood tests are carried out, with the measurement of breakthrough fines concentration and pressure drop across the whole core and the core’s section. Treatment of the experimental data and analysis of the tuned coefficients show that the slow-particle model contains fewer coefficients and exhibits more typical strained concentration dependencies of the tuned parameters than does the delay-release model.

During initial drawdown in coal bed methane (CBM) production, the coal permeability declines due to partial fracture closure. The recently proposed technique for stimulation of natural coal fractures and cleats by the graded proppant injection targets a uniform cleat filling by the proppant. It provides maximum opening and conductivity during pressure depletion. The technique for graded particle injection below the fracturing pressure has been experimentally evaluated using injection of micro-sized ultra-light high-strength particles into coal cores. The laboratory tests on one-dimensional injection of different size particles into coal cores have been conducted under different effective stress conditions. Calculation of electrostatic interactions results in determining physico-chemical conditions that are favourable for particle–particle and particle–coal repulsion. The repulsion condition prevents particle attachment to the coal surface, particle agglomeration and also formation damage due to external and internal cake formation on the fractures’ surface. Particle placement in repulsion condition with low-salinity water results in almost three-time increase in coal permeability. Implementation of an empirical permeability shape factor allows matching the laboratory data by the mathematical model. The laboratory-based mathematical modelling as performed for the field conditions shows that the proposed method can yield up to six-time increase in productivity index.

Twelve clastic core samples from the Walloon Coal Measures, Surat Basin were tested for disintegration in artificially produced fluids varying in ionic strength. XRD data confirm the presence of smectite (water sensitive clay) in the samples. Flow-through rock disintegration experiments demonstrate that the higher the concentration of smectite and soluble plagioclase is, the quicker rock disintegrates in artificial low ionic strength fluid. Pre-soaking of rocks with high ionic strength fluid reduces rock disintegration rate in low ionic strength fluids. This is explained by very strong clay-clay and clay-sand attraction forces, evidenced through zeta-potential measurements, which inhibit rock degradation. For the studied samples it is clear that rock disintegration rate is proportional to fluid velocity. Experimental rock disintegration data are fitted by a power erosion model with two adjusted parameters: fluid ionic strength and Reynolds number. The experimental results satisfactorily agree with theoretical data. Rock disintegration rates are calculated as released particle volume per thickness of interburden layer per day at a fixed Reynolds number and low ionic strength. The laboratory work suggests that keeping wells under strong ionic fluid during shut-in times and a reduction of water production rate will preserve rock integrity for a longer period of time.

Permeability decline during waterflooding by varying water composition, in particular with low salinity or high pH water, has been observed in numerous laboratory studies. This has been explained by the lifting, migration and subsequent plugging of pores by fine particles. Recently, mathematical models have been presented to investigate the concept of using this permeability decline for mobility control during a waterflood. Now, these models need to be tested against observations during a core flood test. This paper presents a systematic laboratory study to investigate the underlying physics mechanisms for improved oil recovery as a consequence of injecting low-salinity water. Three sister plugs of Berea sandstone were used in the experiments. The first plug was subjected to single-phase waterflood for permeability measurements with varying salinities from 4 (high-salinity) to 0 (low-salinity) g/L NaCl. Core permeability decreased from 495 to 60 md, confirming the effect of changing water composition on permeability. The second plug saturated with high-salinity water was subjected first to primary oil flood (using Soltrol) to the connate water saturation and then to a benchmark waterflood using the same water. The oil recovery was noted and the core was restored to the connate water by a secondary oil flood. Finally, low-salinity waterflood was carried out and oil recovery was recorded. Experimental observations were interpreted using a numerical model. In order to check the reproducibility of the observations, the same experimental procedure was applied on the third plug. Results confirmed the reproducibility of the observations. Significant decrease in water relative permeability by approximately 50% and some decrease in residual oil saturation by about 5% were observed during the low-salinity waterflood in comparison with the high-salinity waterflood. Treatment of the low-salinity coreflood data by a numerical model reveals the decrease in water relative permeability with increasing water saturation at high water saturations. This observation is explained by the expansion of rock surface exposed to low-salinity water during the increase of water saturation. The laboratory data matched by the numerical model shows a high surface exponent value (nA=30), which is explained by a sharp surface area rise at high water saturations. The abnormal behavior of water relative permeability in response to low-salinity waterflood has resulted from matching water permeability increase at low water saturations and decrease at high saturations.

The physical model and experimental data support the beneficial technology of graded proppant injection into naturally fractured reservoirs to stimulate natural fracture permeability. Injection of particles with increasing size, at poroelastic and hydraulic fracturing conditions, yield deeper penetration and gradual filling of natural fractures with a resulting increase in permeability. This work expands on the concepts and outlines steps to maximize the benefit of graded proppant injection to enhance coal seam gas stimulation by focusing on the effect of the chemistry of injected fluid on the overall performance and the use in conjunction with hydraulic fracturing. Low productivity indices can be observed in many moderate- to low-permeability coal bed methane (CSG) reservoirs due to low aperture and poor connectivity of natural cleats. Graded proppant injection in CSG environments can: stimulate a stress sensitive cleat system below the fracturing pressure as well as enhance a fracturing treatment by invading cleats, lowering fluid leakoff, and maintaining aperture during production. Further, periodic or remedial treatments could to counter effective stress on the cleats improving production by maintaining cleat aperture. Laboratory tests on coal core flooding by water under increasing pore pressure with proppant injection at the maximum pressure have been carried out under different salinities of the injected water. Proppant-proppant and proppant-coal Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) total interaction energies were calculated to optimise the condition for successful proppant placement. Results on the DLVO total energy of interaction showed that conditions favourable for successful proppant placement in coal cleats are suspension ionic strengths between 0.05 M and 0.1 M NaCl. At these conditions no proppant agglomeration and proppant-coal attachment are observed, allowing deeper penetration of proppant into the natural coal cleat system. Lower suspension ionic strengths can lead to natural coal fines migration, cleat plugging and coal permeability reduction. Based on the experimental results and previously developed model a case study has been conducted to evaluate the productivity enhancement using this technique. The results show about four-fold increase in well productivity index at injections below fracturing pressures and may further improve the stimulated reservoir volume when used in conjunction with low permeability coal hydraulic fracturing treatments.

During reactive flows in porous media with precipitation of a solid chemical reaction product, the permeability reduction occurs. The mathematical model for reactive flow in porous media formulated contains two empirical parameters – the kinetics rate coefficient, determining the reaction rate along with reagent's concentrations, and the formation damage coefficient, reflecting the permeability reduction due to the solid precipitation. These parameters are determined from the laboratory coreflood tests with commingled injection of reacting fluids. A routine laboratory method determines the kinetics rate coefficient from expensive and cumbersome reagent concentration at the core effluent; then, the formation damage coefficient is calculated from inexpensive and simple pressure drop measurements. In the current paper, a laboratory method for determining both coefficients from pressure measurements only is developed. The method utilises pressure measurements at the core inlet, effluent and some intermediate core port during commingled quasi steady state flow of incompatible fluids. The data treatment is based on the analytical model for one-dimensional commingled flow of reacting fluids. The formulae for determining the model coefficients from pressure measurements are derived. The intervals for inverse solution existence, uniqueness and stability are established. Good agreement between the model constants as determined by the routine and three-point-pressure methods validates the proposed method.

Summary Sulfate scaling in offshore waterflood projects, in which sulfate from the injected seawater (SW) reacts with metals from the formation water (FW), forming salt deposit that reduces permeability and well productivity, is a well known phenomenon. Its reliable prediction is based on mathematical models with well-known parameters. Previous research presents methods for laboratory determination of model coefficients using breakthrough concentration during coreflooding. The concentration measurements are complex and cumbersome, while the pressure measurements are simple and require standard laboratory equipment. In the present work, a new laboratory method is developed for determination of the model coefficients from pressure measurements. Several laboratory corefloods have been performed. The tests show that the proposed method is more precise for artificial cores than for the natural reservoir cores. Further development of the method is required to determine parameters of formation damage caused by sulfate scaling for reservoir core samples.

Using the law of propagation of uncertainties we show how equipment- and measurement-related uncertainties contribute to the overall combined standard uncertainties (CSU) in filter permeability and in modelling the results for polystyrene latex microspheres filtration through a borosilicate glass filter at various injection velocities. Standard uncertainties in dynamic viscosity and volumetric flowrate of microspheres suspension have the greatest influence on the overall CSU in filter permeability which excellently agrees with results obtained from Monte Carlo simulations. Two model parameters "maximum critical retention concentration" and "minimum injection velocity" and their uncertainties were calculated by fitting two quadratic mathematical models to the experimental data using a weighted least squares approximation. Uncertainty in the internal cake porosity has the highest impact on modelling uncertainties in critical retention concentration. The model with the internal cake porosity reproduces experimental "critical retention concentration vs velocity"-data better than the second model which contains the total electrostatic force whose value and uncertainty have not been reliably calculated due to the lack of experimental dielectric data.

Sulphate scaling with consequent deposit formation and wellbore damage is a well-known phenomenon that occurs during waterflooding, when mixing of incompatible injection and formation waters may result in sulphate salt precipitation and flow restriction. The reliable productivity decline prediction is based on mathematical modelling with well-known model coefficients. The sulphate scaling system contains two governing parameters: the kinetics coefficient characterising the velocity of chemical reaction and the formation damage coefficient showing how the permeability decreases due to salt precipitation.Previous works have derived analytical-model-based method for determination of both coefficients from breakthrough concentration and pressure drop during laboratory coreflood on quasi steady state commingled flow of injected and formation waters, and also from just pressure drop measurements during two corefloods with two different ratios "formation water : seawater".This paper extends the previous works, by sequence of two commingled injections of incompatible waters into the same core with two different ratios "formation water : seawater". Two different slopes of skin factor increase during two injections allow calculating the kinetics and formation damage coefficients in order to predict scaled-up well behaviour.

Mixing of sea- and production waters during waterflooding of offshore oil reservoirs results in reaction of barium and sulphate ions causing precipitation of barium sulphate with consequent rock permeability decrease and well productivity decline. The current study extends the method and derives formulae for calculation of two scale damage coefficients from just pressure drop measurements during two corefloods with two different ratios "formation water: seawater".Data from series of three corefloods on commingled injection with three different "formation water: seawater" ratios, were treated. Equality of scaling damage parameters as obtained from three different floods in similar artificial cores validates the method proposed.

Coal permeability declines due to fracture closure during the dewatering stage. A new technique for stimulation of natural coal cleats through ultra-fine and ultra-light high-strength particle injection into a coal fracture system is proposed. Coupling this technique with hydraulic fracturing treatment resulted in particles entering cleats under leak-off conditions. The following optimal water-based coreflood experimental conditions were determined by applying Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory to the interaction between glass particles and the coal matrix: stability of a particle-based suspension (no agglomeration); repulsion between particles and the coal matrix; and, immobilisation of coal natural fines. At these conditions, these particles were placed inside cleats and were not attached to the cleat entrance, leading to less external cake formation; no formation damage due to fines migration was observed. The experimental study was carried out on some bituminous coal samples. Micro-sized glass particles were injected into a coal core at minimum effective stress until core permeability decreased to a value predetermined by a mathematical model. An increase of the effective stress to its maximum value by injection of particle-free water resulted in an approximate three-times increase in coal permeability, when compared to the original value. The proposed technique can be used for stimulation of a natural fracture network in conventional and unconventional reservoirs, as well as for the enhancement of conductivity of micro-fractures around the hydraulically induced fractures. These particles can be used as a non-damaging leak-off additive during hydraulic fracturing stimulation treatments leading to long-term fracture conductivity.

A detailed uncertainty analysis associated with carboxyl-modified latex particle capture in glass bead-formed porous media enabled verification of the two theoretical stochastic models for prediction of particle retention due to size exclusion. At the beginning of this analysis it is established that size exclusion is a dominant particle capture mechanism in the present study: calculated significant repulsive Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek potential between latex particles and glass beads is an indication of their mutual repulsion, thus, fulfilling the necessary condition for size exclusion. Applying linear uncertainty propagation method in the form of truncated Taylor's series expansion, combined standard uncertainties (CSUs) in normalised suspended particle concentrations are calculated using CSUs in experimentally determined parameters such as: an inlet volumetric flowrate of suspension, particle number in suspensions, particle concentrations in inlet and outlet streams, particle and pore throat size distributions. Weathering of glass beads in high alkaline solutions does not appreciably change particle size distribution, and, therefore, is not considered as an additional contributor to the weighted mean particle radius and corresponded weighted mean standard deviation. Weighted mean particle radius and LogNormal mean pore throat radius are characterised by the highest CSUs among all experimental parameters translating to high CSU in the jamming ratio factor (dimensionless particle size). Normalised suspended particle concentrations calculated via two theoretical models are characterised by higher CSUs than those for experimental data. The model accounting the fraction of inaccessible flow as a function of latex particle radius excellently predicts normalised suspended particle concentrations for the whole range of jamming ratios. The presented uncertainty analysis can be also used for comparison of intra- and inter-laboratory particle size exclusion data.

Electrophoretic mobilities of carboxylate-modified latex microspheres and zeta potential of soda-lime glass beads were measured at zero ionic strength and high pH. Surface potential for latex microspheres was calculated using Ohshima’s theory for soft particles. Total potential of interaction between colloidal particles and engineered porous medium evaluated according to DLVO theory showed negligibly small secondary minimum, a high potential barrier, and a primary minimum. Such conditions favour particle-bead repulsion resulting in size exclusion being a major particle retaining mechanism. Normalised outlet concentration is inverse function of particle concentration. Concentration of captured particles reduced along the length of the column in downstream direction. An analytical model for deep bed filtration of suspension in porous media and straining under size exclusion capture mechanism is developed and validated by laboratory tests on suspension flow in engineered media. The model is successfully matched with the results from column experiments, predicting the suspended particle concentrations at the outlet.

Sulphate scaling may develop during offshore waterflood projects where mixing of injected and formation waters causes salt precipitation. Salt deposition results in permeability decline and, consequently, in impairment of well productivity. The problem has been widely presented in the literature for the North Sea, Campos Basin and the Gulf of Mexico. Recently several oil companies have reported several field cases of oilfield scaling in Australia. In this paper, methods are summarised for forecasting productivity decline from the history of well productivity index decline, produced water composition, and also from laboratory corefloods. The methods account for chemical reactions based on exact analytical solutions of inverse and forward modelling of quasi steady state oil-water flow towards producing wells. The main result obtained from the analytical model is a measure of the decline in productivity index with time for either linear flow in the case of a coreflood or the radial flow towards well. The analytical model has been used to predict further productivity decline in scaled-up producers of the deepwater offshore field X (Campos Basin, Brazil). Laboratory corefloods were carried out for field X cores and waters, and the model coefficients were determined. The productivity losses due to barium sulphate scaling have been noticed during several years of seawater flooding. The values obtained for reaction kinetics and formation damage coefficients are similar to those obtained from corefloods.

Abstract This paper presents both visualization and flow simulation of glass micromodel experiments which are performed to visualize the gravity dominated miscible gas displacement process. This approach enables to simulate the exact porous pattern on which the micromodel experiments are performed. At first, a porous pattern for experiments was constructed and then etched onto a glass plate. An experiment was performed at 45o dip angle at injection rate of 0.002 ml/min to visualize the displacement of two miscible fluids under gravity domination. Butanol and Iso-octane were selected as in situ and injected fluids respectively. The mobility and density ratio of these two fluids are comparable with medium API oil and CO2 at reservoir conditions. For simulation, the porous pattern was exported to the finite element analysis software, COMSOL Multiphysics, so that simulations of micromodel experiments were performed for the same porous pattern as used for experiments. To simulate miscible displacement, the Navier-Stokes and continuity equations were used to calculate pressure and velocity fields in the solute and solvent regions, while the convection-diffusion equation was used to calculate solute concentration in the mixture during the displacement. The experimental visual results were processed and compared with the simulation results indicating a good match between experiments and simulation. The validated model can be used to simulate and to find the optimized conditions and controlling parameters at different conditions for the gravity assisted miscible displacement process.

The new method to assess permeability damage in geothermal reservoirs and predict well productivity decline is presented. The laboratory methodology developed aims to determine permeability decline from mobilisation, migration and straining of natural reservoir fines. Laboratory coreflood testing with constant and stepwise decreasing ionic strength has been performed with measurements of the pressure drop along the core and accumulated effluent particle concentration. Stabilisation of rock permeability occurs after injection of numerous pore volumes, suggesting slow drift of mobilised particles if compared with the carrier water velocity. Low ionic strength water increases electrostatic repulsion forces between clay particles and sand grain surfaces, further mobilising particles and resulting in formation damage. Kaolinite and illite/chlorite mixed layer clay minerals are identified by SEM-EDAX analysis and are the minerals primarily responsible for the permeability damage. The competitive effects of decreasing water viscosity and weakening electrostatic attraction on the attached particle concentration during temperature increase have been observed. The micro-modeling of the fine particle mechanical equilibrium shows that the water viscosity effect on the fine particle attachment dominates. It results in decreased fines detachment and permeability decline at high temperatures.

The technology of injecting micro-sized proppant particles along with fracturing fluid is proposed to improve the conductivity of naturally fracture systems (e.g., cleats, natural fractures) in stress sensitive reservoirs, by placing graded particles in a larger, preserved stimulated reservoir volume around the induced hydraulical fracture. One of the main parameters determining the efficiency of the proposed technology is the concentration of placed proppant particles in the fracture systems. A laboratory study has been conducted to evaluate the effect of placed proppant concentration on coal permeability enhancement using a one-dimensional linear injection of micro-sized proppant into coal core and varying effective stress. Permeability values are measured for different concentrations of placed particles as a function of effective stress. The results show that there is an optimum concentration of placed particles for which the cleat system permeability reaches a maximum and permeability enhancement is more sensitive to concentration of placed proppant at higher than lower effective stress. The experimental results show maximum permeability enhancement of about 20% for an optimum concentration of placed particles at 490 psi effective stress. Permeability enhancement by 3.2 folds is observed at elevated effective stress of 950 psi. Finally, the paper proposes a field application strategy to apply graded particle injection in field case study.

Fines mobilisation and straining by changing the ionic strength of the reservoir water results in a significant permeability reduction, and is a well known mechanism of formation damage. The phenomenon occurs during drilling and completion, where the fluid invasion with fines lifting may cause significant productivity damage. The paper experimentally investigates the permeability damage of natural sandstone rocks in order to select ionic compositions for drilling and completion fluids. Two sandstone rock cores from the same production well from the Birkhead Formation in the area of underlying Patchawarra Trough (Eromanga Basin, Australia) were chosen to study formation damage during successively decreasing (piece-wise) the ionic strength of injected fluid using a three point pressure measurement method along the core. Effluent particle concentration and electrolytic conductivity were measured for effluent streams. It was observed that formation damage in the studied rock cores after their contact with low-ionic strength fluid is caused by fines mobilisation, their migration in the porous medium and straining in thin pores. Each coreflood is characterised by decreased rock permeability with stabilisation times significantly exceeding one pore volume, suggesting that mobilised particle’s drift velocity is significantly lower than that for a carrier fluid. The electrolytic conductivity profile shows that the fluid front in porous medium is not piston-like, rather diffusion driven, suggesting that there is an additional reason behind long permeability stabilisation time – a delayed contact of rock with low ionic strength fluid.

Low productivity indices are observed in many moderate-to low-permeability coal bed methane (CBM) and shale gas (SG) reservoirs due to low aperture and poor connectivity of natural cleats.A method is proposed for injection of graded proppant particles into a cleat system below the fracturing pressure to keep coal cleats and shale fractures open during water-gas production. Graded proppant injection in CBM and SG reservoirs can: stimulate a stress sensitive cleat system below the fracturing pressure; enhance fracturing treatment by invading cleats, lowering fluid leak-off, and maintaining aperture during production; and provide a periodic or remedial treatment to counter effective stress on the cleats improving production by maintaining cleat aperture.Laboratory tests on bituminous coal core flooding with water under increasing pore pressure with graded proppant injection at the maximum pore pressure (minimum effective stress) have been carried out at different ionic strengths and high pH of the injected water. Proppant particles penetrate deeper into coal matrix at low ionic strength of injected water corresponding to electrostatic particle-particle and particle-coal repulsion. No particle agglomeration and formation of particle-formed cake at the entrance of coal cleats are observed at these conditions. Coal permeability increases by about 2.2 times as the result of a single-sized small particle injection. Followed injection of larger particles leads to a greater enhancement of coal core permeability. An overall increase of coal core permeability after graded proppant injection is about 2.7 times.The proposed method can significantly increase very low productivity index in stress sensitive coals and shales without hydraulic fracturing. It can be also used as a non-damaging leak-off additive during hydraulic fracturing stimulation treatments and to aid long-term conductivity.

The paper presents a systematic laboratory study to investigate the underlying physical mechanisms for improved oil recovery as a consequence of low-salinity water injection. Three sister plugs of Berea sandstone were used in the experiments. All three plugs were initially saturated with high salinity water (4 g/L NaCl). Single phase water flow test was performed in the first plug. The salinity of the injected water was decreased gradually (4 g/L to 0 g/L NaCl). In addition to observe the permeability reduction with reducing salinity, the particle concentration was also measured of the effluents at different stages of the experiment. Higher particle concentration was observed during low salinity injection period. The second plug was subjected to primary oil (Soltrol) drainage to the connate water saturation, followed by high salinity (4 g/L NaCl) water injection. After this connate water saturation was restored by a second oil flood. Finally, low salinity (0 g/L NaCl) injection was carried out. For both high and low salinity floods; oil recovery, pressure drop and effluent particle concentration was noted. Numerical modelling was used to interpret the waterflooding data. Five to ten times decrease in water relative permeability and some decrease in residual oil saturation were observed during the low-salinity waterflood. Treatment of the low-salinity coreflood data by a numerical model reveals the unusual decrease in water relative permeability with increasing water saturation at high water saturations. This observation is explained by the expansion of rock surface exposed to low-salinity water during the increase of water saturation. A reproducibility test was performed on the third sister plug which confirmed the observations of the second sister plug. The proposed laboratory-based mathematical model can be used to design the injected water concentration which is crucial for a low salinity waterflooding project.

The coal permeability declines due to fracture closure during the production and pressure depletion. The recently proposed technique for stimulation of natural coal cleats consists of the injection of microsized high-strength particles into a coal natural fractured system below the fracturing pressure. Coupling this technique with hydraulic fracturing treatment resulted in particles entering cleats under leal-off condition. In the current paper it is shown that the particles must be deposited at specific conditions of the particle-coal repulsion, ensuring the absence of external cake formation. The new method was successfully validated through laboratory injection of microsized glass particles into fractured coal cores. Application of Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory resulted in determination of experimental conditions favourable for particle-particle and particle-coal repulsion; these conditions also immobilize the natural fines. At these conditions, no particle attachment to coal surface and no particle agglomeration were observed, thus the conditions exclude formation damage due to external cake formation, particle attraction to coal rock and fines migration. The previously developed mathematical model was used for determination of the duration of particle injection into a coal core at minimum effective stress. Particle placement resulted in almost three-time increase in coal permeability, thus confirming the mathematical model used. The curve for well productivity index-vs-stimulation zone radius reaches maximum at some critical value of stimulation radius; the maximum is determined by the mathematical model. Placing particles beyond this critical radius results in reduction of well productivity index, due to significant hydraulic losses experienced by suspension flowing through narrowing cleat apertures during production stage. Applying the proposed novel technology during hydraulic fracturing treatment leads to improvement in productivity of coal seam gas wells and other unconventional resources (shales, tight gas and geothermal reservoirs) through enhancement of interconnectivity among microfractures around the hydraulically induced fractures.
