3. Self-Reported Musculoskeletal Injury Healthcare-Seeking Behaviors in US Air Force Special Warfare Personnel

Abstract

This study evaluated the musculoskeletal injury (MSKI) self-reporting behaviors among active-duty Air Force Special Warfare personnel to explore potential limitations of injury surveillance approaches.Participants completed a 47-item survey between December 2018 and March 2019 regarding their MSKI history. Participants were asked if they sought medical care for symptoms consistent with MSKIs and reasons they did or did not report their injuries. Injury reporting rates were calculated with descriptive statistics and rank ordering was utilized to determine frequency.A total of 398 airmen reported 1,057 injuries occurring in the previous 12-month period, including 508 (48%) injuries identified as not reported to medical personnel. Approximately 55% (N = 579) of all injuries were described as gradual onset. The most common reason for not reporting injuries (28.8%, N = 62) was "fear of potential impact on future career opportunities."Approximately half of MSKIs in this sample of US Air Force Special Warfare personnel were not reported to medical personnel. The underreporting of injuries may pose unknown levels of risk and negatively impact military readiness levels.

Abstract

During mining activities at the sites of KAMIG (Österreichische Kaolin- und Montanindustrie Aktiengesellschaft Nfg. Komm. Ges.) substantial amounts of tailings have been produced over the last century. To make use of the valuable mineral-contents, KAMIG KG and the Chair of Mineral Processing initiated the strategic research project 'Process development for innovative mineral products (Kaolin, high-grade Silica sand, Feldspar) from anthropogenic deposits'. The aim of this project is to develop a process to beneficiate the Quartz-, Potassium-Feldspar, Kaolinite- as well as rare-earth-containing mineral phases from the anthropogenic deposits to marketable, high-quality concentrates in order to expand the product portfolio of KAMIG KG., During mining activities at the sites of KAMIG (Österreichische Kaolin- und Montanindustrie Aktiengesellschaft Nfg. Abstract

We report electronic transport mapping in a single dielectric layer of a polycrystalline BaTiO3 multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) by electron beam induced current (EBIC) measurements using a scanning transmission electron microscope. Ga+ focused ion beam-lift out techniques with organometallic Pt-deposition are used to extract and electrically connect to these devices while maintaining high (>gigaohm) resistance between electrodes. Different modes of EBIC are observed depending on device resistivity. We demonstrate the use of EBIC resulting from secondary electron emission as a method for performing resistance contrast imaging (RCI), with resistive grain boundaries appearing as steps in EBIC contrast. These RCI maps are also used to calculate the potential and electric field of the device under an arbitrary bias. A mix of high- and low-resistance ohmic as well as rectifying grain boundaries is observed. These results help to better establish the distribution of resistivities critical to the prevention of performance-limiting current leakage in MLCCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A technique has been developed for fabricating electromagnetic induction coils in a reproducible manner. The process utilizes a split mandrel that can be disassembled to remove the mandrel from the coil. The technique has increased coil production rates by a factor of 8 over the freehand winding method. The success rate for producing a functional levitation coil has been increased from 50 percent to 95 percent. The levitation coil designed during this work has successfully levitated and melted a variety of alloys including Cu, Ag, Ag-Ni, Cu-Fe, Fe-C, and Nb-Ge. W was also levitated but not melted at temperatures as high as 2700 C. The highest sample melt temperature achieved was 2400 C for the Nb-Ge samples.

Abstract

A technique is described for more reproducible fabrication of electromagnetic levitation coils. A split mandrel was developed upon which the coil is wound. After fabrication the mandrel can be disassembled to remove it from the coil. Previously, a full day was required to fabricate a levitation coil and the success rate for a functional coil was only 50 percent. About eight coils may be completed in one day using the technique developed and 95 percent of them are good levitation coils.

The Gutratberg quarry, Salzburg consists of Upper Cretaceous lime, marl and overlying sandstone sequences. Exploitation of this heterogeneous deposit has been optimised using the Mining Tools geological modelling and production planning mining system for about eight years.
