This paper presents investigations on the tribological behaviour of PTFE composites against steel at cryogenic temperatures. The results showed that the friction coefficient decreases with temperature down to 77 K, but did not follow a linear evolution further down to extreme low temperatures. It can be stated that the cryogenic environment has a significant influence on the tribological performance of the polymer composites. The effect of low temperatures was more clearly detected at low sliding speed, where friction heat is reduced. A change in wear mechanism from adhesive to abrasive was observed in this case. SEM and AFM analyses showed that the PTFE matrix composites investigated under these experimental conditions have transferred material onto the disc down to very low temperatures. Abstract: Costs reduction is one of the major objectives in mechanical applications with a parallel increase of the power output. Another driver represents new environmental standards and their increasing restrictions in the automotive industry leading to the question, if materials based concepts may substitute harmful EP/AW additives in lubricants. This paper presents the slip-rolling resistance of different DLC/THC coatings on steel substrates with a definite slip rate of 10%. Industrial DLC coatings of ta-C and a-C:H types from various manufacturers were deposited on steels SAE 52100 and AMS 5898 to compile the slip-rolling resistance under initial average Hertzian contact pressures between 1.5 GPa and 2 GPa. The tests were carried out on Amsler-type twin disc tribometer under the regime of mixed/boundary lubrication in unadditivated paraffinic oil (ISO VG 46) and a factory fill engine oil. The spherical steel sample was uncoated and the cylindrical coated with DLC. Some coatings achieved 10 million cycles without any damage under a maximal Hertzian contact pressure P max well over 2.25 GPa, thus exceeding FZG 12. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Historical records suggest that Chiriguano tribe is the result of a genetic admixture event. The process involved the arrival of Guaraní tribesmen descending from Amazonian region of Brazil along with groups of Arawak origin that inhabited the foothill plains of Bolivia. Later they arrived in Argentina at the beginning of the twentieth century. Aiming to test the historical records, we analysed a set of 46 samples collected at San Ramon de la Nueva Orán, Province of Salta, Argentina. A wide set of uni- and biparentally transmitted genetic markers were analysed, including 23 autosomal STRs; 46 AIM-DIPs and 24 AIM-SNPs all located at diverse autosomal chromosome locations; 23 Y-STRs and the entire mtDNA D-Loop sequence. Ancestry informative markers allowed for the detection of a strong Native American component in the genomes (> 94%), while all mtDNA haplotypes showed Native American characteristic motives, and 93% of Y-haplotypes belonged to the Q1a3a Y-haplogroup. The analysis of mitochondrial haplotypes and Y chromosome, although they did not match other populations, revealed a relationship between the Chiriguano and other groups of Guaraní and Arawak origin inhabiting Brazil and Bolivia, confirming, at least in part, the historical records describing the origins of Chiriguano tribal settlements in northwestern Argentina.

Previous studies suggest that hyperprolactinaemia might have adverse effects on lipid and glucose metabolism. We therefore aimed to evaluate whether dopamine agonist treatment with cabergoline has significant effects on blood lipids, fasting glucose and HbA1c levels in patients with micro- or macroprolactinoma. In this retrospective observational study the main outcome measures are changes in parameters of glucose and lipid metabolism compared at hyperprolactinaemia and after achievement of normoprolactinaemia by cabergoline treatment. We enrolled 53 study participants (22 females; median [interquartile range] age: 40.0 [27.5 to 50.0] years), 22 (41.5 %) with micro-, and 31 (58.5 %) with macroprolactinomas. After a median follow-up of 9 months, prolactin levels decreased from 220.6 (80.7-913.4) to 11.2 (3.5-18.7) ng/mL (p < 0.001). There was a significant decrease in median levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) from 121.6 (±39.4) to 110.6 mg/dl (±37.6, p = 0.005) and total cholesterol from 191 (168.5-241) to 181 mg/dl (162-217, p < 0.001), but no change in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, fasting glucose and HbA1c. We observed a significant increase in testosterone in men and in oestradiol in women. In linear regression analyses using the change in total cholesterol or LDL as dependent, and the change in prolactin, oestradiol, and testosterone as independent variables, no significant predictor of the change in total cholesterol or LDL was identified. In patients with prolactinomas, normalisation of elevated prolactin levels by cabergoline treatment was accompanied by significant reductions in LDL and total cholesterol. Further studies are warranted to confirm our findings and to evaluate the clinical implications of lipid levels in the monitoring and treatment of patients with prolactinomas.

Background: Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) are currently detected in patients with clinically suspicion. The aim of our study was to evaluate whether CRBSIs could be anticipated and detected in a subclinical stage by peptide nucleic acid fluorescence in situ hybridization (PNA FISH) using universal hybridization probes or acridine orange leucocyte cytospin (AOLC) tests in haematooncological patients with central venous catheters (CVCs) in situ., Materials and Methods: Peptide nucleic acid fluorescence in situ hybridization and AOLC tests using blood samples from one CVC lumen/port chamber in haematooncological patients were continuously performed. These results were compared to those obtained from routinely performed CRBSI diagnostic tests., Results: One hundred and eighty-two patients with 342 catheter periods were investigated. Seventeen CRBSI cases were detected in 6466 CVC days by routine measures resulting in a CRBSI rate of 2.6/1000 catheter days. Two of 17 showed positive PNA FISH tests, and five positive AOLC test results before the diagnosis were established with routine measures. The screening revealed further seven patients with positive universal PNA FISH tests and 10 positive AOLC tests without symptoms indicative for infection and were therefore considered not to have CRBSI., Conclusions: Sampling of only one CVC lumen/port chamber screening for CRBSI in haematooncological patients seems not to be a useful tool for anticipative diagnosis of CRBSI. Reasons for false-negative results might include origin of CRBSIs from the other CVC lumina not sampled for screening, and false-positive results might origin from catheter colonization without subsequent spread of micro-organisms into the peripheral bloodstream., (© 2015 Stichting European Society for Clinical Investigation Journal Foundation.)

We have addressed the possible epigenetic contribution to heterosis using epigenetic inbred lines (epiRILs) with varying levels and distributions of DNA methylation. One line consistently displayed parent-of-origin heterosis for growth-related traits. Genome-wide transcription profiling followed by a candidate gene approach revealed 33 genes with altered regulation in crosses of this line that could contribute to the observed heterosis. Although none of the candidate genes could explain hybrid vigour, we detected intriguing, hybrid-specific transcriptional regulation of the RPP5 gene, encoding a growth suppressor. RPP5 displayed intermediate transcript levels in heterotic hybrids; surprisingly however, with global loss of fitness of their F2 progeny, we observed striking under-representation of the hybrid-like intermediate levels. Thus, in addition to genetic factors contributing to heterosis, our results strongly suggest that epigenetic diversity and epigenetic regulation of transcription play a role in hybrid vigour and inbreeding depression, and also in the absence of parental genetic diversity.
