The Caravan Farm Theatre in the Salmon River Valley northwest of Armstrong, British Columbia, has presented productions informed by the tenets of anarchism since the 1970s. Caravan breaks down traditional categories of hierarchy and theatrical roles in a spontaneous expression of performance energy.

The Belfry Theatre Company in Victoria, British Columbia, has renovated its building complex and artistic programs to become a premier theatrical force in its geographical area. The Company bought a church complex in 1991 and in 1998 concluded renovations to improve seating and technical equipment. The Company presents a wide range of dramas and musicals that appeal to mainstream audiences in ways that challenge expectations and showcase Canadian work.

While nineteenth-century theatre in British Columbia has been extensively studied, the more varied and rich theatrical history of the twentieth century is less well explored and not fully appreciated. Today, theatre is province-wide and multicultural, many actors are professionally trained, and children's theatre flourishes. Yet few plays are set in the province, and regional theatre does not necessarily have a regional identity. Waiting for Lefty was a militant, pro-union play which explored the capitalist system from the viewpoint of working people and exposed its exploitive nature. Its successful but controversial production in 1935 by Vancouver's Progressive Arts Club reveals much about the adaptability and resilience of working-class protest and the response of the general public to such politicization of culture.
